Chamber Music Festival Finale The Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival closes the 2012-2013 season with its “Thrilling Season Finale” concert at 7:30pm on Saturday, May 4 in the Christ Church Parish House of the Christ Episcopal Church. This concert will feature internationally-renowned musicians Adam Neiman, piano; Axel Strauss, violin; Ara Gregorian, violin; Maria Lambros, viola; and Ani Aznavoorian, cello; performing masterpieces by Chopin, Elgar and Schumann. The Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival brings world-class musicians to Eastern North Carolina and beyond for concerts, master classes, interactive community outreach, a children’s residency, Next Generation residencies, Next Generation on the Road tours and the Four Seasons Family Night. Highlights of past seasons include more than 97 public concerts, 254 master classes, two performances at Weill Recital Hall and Carnegie Hall and a six-concert tour of Israel. “I look forward to performing in the beautiful Christ Church Parish House with all of our wonderful guest artists,” said Ara Gregorian, festival founder and artistic director. “This is a concert that is not-to-bemissed and is the perfect way to end our first season in New Bern.” Nominated for a Grammy Award, Neiman has performed as soloist with the Chicago, San Francisco, St. Louis, Houston, Dallas, Minnesota and the National Symphony orchestras. He Adam Neiman has appeared in the PBS documentary film “Playing for Real,” which aired worldwide and was a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant. Winner of the 1998 Naumburg Violin Award, Strauss has performed as soloist with the Hamburg Symphony, the Seoul, Budapest and Bucharest Philharmonics and the New York ChamAxel Strauss ber Symphony. He has appeared

at the Library of Congress and Alice Tully Hall, and is on the violin faculty at McGill University in Montreal. Founder and artistic director of the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival, Gregorian has appeared at festivals throughout the United States, Finland, Holland, Canada and Puerto Rico Ara Gregorian has performed extensively as a member of chamber music groups such as the Daedalus Quartet, Concertante and the Arcadian Trio. He is a member of the violin faculty at ECU. A former member of the Mendelssohn Quartet, the Grammy Award nominated Ridge Quartet and the Naumburg Award-winning Meliora Quartet, Lambros has appeared at the Aspen, Helsinki, Santa Fe, Yellow Barn and Spoleto festivals, collaborated with the Guarneri, Cleveland, Brentano, Orion and Juilliard quartets and performed with the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society. Lambros is a member of the chamber music faculty at the Peabody Conservatory. A Presidential Scholar in the Arts, Aznavoorian was a top prize winner in the 1996 International Paulo Competition in Finland and has performed as soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Ani Aznavoorian the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Finnish Radio Symphony, the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Belgrade Philharmonic and the Helsinki Philharmonic and is principal cellist of Camerata Pacifica. RIVER CITY Summer Camps Arrive

The New Bern Parks and Recreation Dept. is offering camps and classes to keep children active and involved during the summer months. The Y.E.S. Summer Camp is offered for children ages 6-12 and is broken down into five camp sites, Henderson Park, Community Resource Center, Lawson Creek, Pembroke and Pleasant Hill. Camp dates are from June 17-Aug. 9 and registration is $20 for the first child, $15 for each additional child. For more information, contact James Bullock at 252-639-2919. It is also holding registration for the Bern Bear Bunch Day Camp program at West New Bern Recreation Center, also for ages 6-12. Children participate in different games, physical activities, field trips, cookouts, etc. Bern Bear Bunch offers four two-week sessions. Pre-registration is required and registration begins in April. Wine Gala and Silent Auction Arrive

The New Bern Lions is hosting its 6th annual Wine Gala & Silent Auction beginning at 6:30pm on Thursday, May 16 at the Carolina Colours Country Club, 3300 Waterscape Way, New Bern. The event will be emceed by Maj. Gen. Tom Braaten, USMC retired. Heavy hors d’oeuvres are being catered by the The Flame Restaurant and the cost of this fundraiser is $35 per person. The proceeds from the event will be used to support the visually impaired and blind in the community with eye exams, eye glasses, eye surgeries, leader dogs for the blind, white canes, eye research, disaster recovery assistance, diabetes awareness and more. New Bern. This month’s topic is “A North Carolina Icon Brought to Life: Sea Stories of Sailors Aboard the World War II Battleship North Carolina” presented by Cindy Ramsey. The USS Battleship North Carolina is a favorite tourist attraction in Wilmington, drawing a quarter million visitors every year. It was the most decorated American battleship of World War II, served in every major battle in the Pacific and now stands as a memorial to all North Carolina veterans who lost their lives during that war. And though the ship was a technologically advanced fighting machine, it was nothing without the crew who served aboard the vessel. Author Cindy Ramsey will introduce the audience to some of the boys who became men while manning America’s floating fortress, including North Carolinian Chuck Paty, using her book “Boys of the Battleship North Carolina,” which tells the story of the ship through the eyes of its enlisted crew. For some, the ship was their home for the duration of the war. For others, the ship was the last home they knew.

Prepaid reservations are required for this program. Tickets are $15 for members and $17 for nonmembers. Meal choices are baked haddock with champagne dill cream or lemon chicken. For more information, call the New Bern Historical Society at 252-638-8558.

Cyclists Go Coastal

Join the folks at the Coastal Land Trust for the second annual Cyclists Goin’ Coastal event, a ride to benefit the Coastal Land Trust. The routes begin at River Dunes, Oriental and there are numerous routes for this year’s event on Saturday, May 4. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy a great ride while helping support conservation along the coast. The Cyclists Goin’ Coastal ride is not a race and the routes are not closed. The rules of the road must be observed to ensure everyone’s safety. Helmets are required and bicycles should be in fair running condition before the ride commences. Bike mirrors are recommended. There have been more routes added for this year, including 30, 50, 75 and 100 mile routes, along with a family fun 5-mile ride around the community of River Dunes. Packet pick-up will be held from 4:307:30pm on May 3 at Atomic Cycles, 504 South Front St., New Bern. Same day registration and packet pick-up begins at 7am on Saturday, May 4. Start time from River Dunes is 8am with staggered starts to prevent congestion – riders taking the 75 and 100 mile routes will start first. Rest stops offer toilet facilities and refreshments, including cookies, fresh fruit, crackers, peanut butter, fruit, Gatorade and water. There is also an after party at River Dunes fea-

turing live music and more. Registration includes a t-shirt and stocked rest stops for lunch. Although fundraising is optional, awards are presented to those with the most funds raised. The race cost is $65 and the family fun ride is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers.

Town-Wide Yard Sale Held

Oriental holds its annual Town-Wide Yard Sale from 8am-1pm on Saturday, May 4 and this year there’ll be nearly 100 places to stop and shop. It’s become a rite of mid-spring in Oriental to clean out the attic, the garage and those closets and sell items at this special event. Last year more than 80 homes took part, presenting a treasure trove of bargains for those browsing for those one-of-a-kind finds. It’s free to be part of the sale, but in order to be on the map, which is sold to those who want to know where all the sales are, one must register with Jennifer Craft Del Rio. Hershey’s Track Registration

The New Bern Parks and Recreation Department is holding registration for its Hershey’s Track and Field Program. Boys and girls ages 9-14 are eligible to participate in the upcoming event. The department will host a local track meet in June at New Bern High School and winners will advance to the Eastern Region Meet in June, which will be held in Greenville. We will be setting up practice meets will be set up in May for participants to prepare for their events. Some of the events include the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, standing broad jump and softball throw. Register at West New Bern Recreation Center, located at 1225 Pine Tree Drive. Car Show

Since its inception there has been something about the sight, sound and feel of the automobile that stirs the imagination and desire to experience the freedom of the open road. Whether it’s the clatter of the single cylinder brass era car or the heavy thumping of big block Detroit muscle cars that fuels the addiction, vintage cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles are a common bond among those in the Antique Automobile Club of America. New Bern is gearing up for the 23rd annual Antique Automobile Club of America Antique Automobile Show, where classic cars take center stage on Middle Street in downtown New Bern. This free event begins at 10am on Saturday, May 11 with an awards ceremony at 1pm. Car enthusiasts with interests in cars that are considered classic, antique or restored are in for a treat with this special event. The First Capital Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America plans on having a little bit of everything among the roughly 100 cars that arrive each year for the show. Those who make the trek to Middle Street will not be disappointed. With everything from a classically restored Thunderbird to high performance muscle cars from the 1960s on display, visitors are sure to find something that is reminiscent of days gone by, introducing nostalgia through vehicles. Presented in the display of well maintained antique cars will be pre-war, classic contemporary and two seat sport cars. The show is open to anyone with a vehicle 25 years or older, both members and non-members. It will feature cars in categories of modern classics, sport cars, pre-war 10

(1941) and modified or special interest. The registration fee is $20 at the show or $15 in advance. A $10 donation is required for those only wishing to display their bicycles, modified cars and motorcycles. Cars must arrive between 9 and 10am, and judging will begin at 11am, with awards to follow at 1pm. There will be a 50/50 drawing with proceeds benefitting the Auto Technology Scholarship Fund. Event organizer Fred Wagner is excited for this year’s event and awaits the many beautiful cars that will be seen by all in attendance. “I think this year is going to be a great year for this event and I can’t wait to see all the people that make the venture to show off their cars. The selection is always amazing,” said Wagner. The goal of the AACA has been the preservation and enjoyment of automotive history of all types. They encourage everyone that is interested to join the club or visit any of the events. People can become members at any level they wish, and don’t even have to own a vehicle or know how to turn a wrench. Whether it’s joining their judging teams, doing research in the vast library or taking the family through the excitement of a National Meet or Tour, the possibilities are endless. In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge tucked away along the Neuse River, which oddly enough, earned its named from a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island. The wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette, is said to have seen the transom of the vessel displayed years later at a home in Manteo and found it to be the ideal name for their little waterside hamlet. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history, they define it. Labeled the sailing capital of North Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5-6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, many for the collection of regattas held throughout the year. The town boasts a plethora of activities, a wealth of award-winning artisans, an active music scene, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, just 10 miles from Oriental, making it accessible to points east and west.

Nestled along Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best known as the home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid-1800s, Havelock grew, in part, because of the union between Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named after British Gen. Henry Havelock. The 1940s and World War II brought with them MCAS Cherry Point and Havelock’s population exploded, from about 100 to approximately 22,500 people. Havelock enjoys visitors year round, with annual events like its NC Chili Festival and the Cherry Point Air Show, held each year in June, and natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and Neuse River. Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to Colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. The bear proudly displayed throughout the city comes from the Swiss city’s name, taken from the German word “bärenâ€? or “bears.â€? While providing shopping and dining experiences on par with other major cities, New Bern maintains the spirit and feel of a small town. Visitors can explore 150 historic landmarks, many of which date back to the 18th century. The revitalized historic district offers visitors a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes. Tryon Palace is one of New Bern’s most popular historic sites. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon and served as the capital building in the later 1700s when New Bern was North Carolina’s capital. Tryon Palace hosted many famous people, including George Washington.

New Bern is also famed for a late 1800s pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. Bradham mixed syrup of coca, kola nut extracts and rare oils with carbonated water to create the fizzy beverage known today as Pepsi Cola.

Coyote Set to Perform

The Down East Folk Art Society is gearing up for the last concert of its 20th anniversary season as it welcomes the return of Coyote, a duo with a loyal following and plenty of fans eager for their return. Join in the fun as the band visits the Trent River Coffee Co., New Bern at 8pm on Friday, May 17. Lou Castro and Marcy Brenner are residents of Ocracoke and have been performing together

for 10 years. They rely on the atmosphere of the area for inspiration, sharing the melodies of the waves, wind, sun and storms. Brenner’s voice is accompanied by the mandolin and Castro’s guitar playing flows effortlessly, making for a special pairing of musical talent. From jazz to Cajun, folk to country, the audience is never sure of what they may hear next. The duo are frequent musicians at Soundside Studio in Ocracoke and are featured on a song from the soundtrack for the movie “Nights in Rodanthe,” based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks. Gallery Presents Jill Eberle

New Bern ArtWorks Fine Art Gallery presents “Imaginings” by Jill Eberle – where the art inspiration of children is graced with classical painting. The paintings will be on view from May 10 through June 30 and a reception will be held from 5-8pm on Friday, May 10 during the downtown Art Walk.

Local artist Jill Eberle has vividly brought to life drawings of monsters created by children in a new series of paintings. In fall 2012 Eberle asked Melissa Giglio, then the art teacher at Arapahoe Charter School, to have her first grade students each draw a monster. Eberle then made a careful tracing of the child’s drawing and interpreted it as a 3-dimensional realistic creature in an environment. Each piece uses classic oil painting techniques and some include imagery from wellknown historical art works. The child’s drawing is displayed along with the painting it inspired, encouraging a delightful game of comparison. “The kids’ drawings are full of imagination,” said Eberle. “As I began developing the tracings, they suddenly appeared rich with character and strong emotions. Creating these paintings has tapped into my own early memories and challenged my representational painting skills as I try to create a logical anatomy and scenario for each creature. It’s a departure from my usual work and it’s been pure fun.” New Bern ArtWorks & Company is located at 323 Pollock St., downtown New Bern. Old Theater Presents “Plaza Suite”

The Old Theater in Oriental will present Neil Simon’s Tony-award winning comedy, “Plaza Suite” at 7:30pm on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4, and at 2pm on Sunday, May 5. Each of the play’s three acts takes place in Suite 719 of New York’s Plaza Hotel. Each act features different characters with very different stories. The play is a sophisticated blend of humor and poignancy, focusing on timeless issues such as changing relationships, aging and love. Cast members come from Pamlico County and range in age from 12 to 40 years old. “Plaza Suite” is directed by Lynn Whalen and produced by The Old Theater as a spring fundraiser. Voci Allegre Vocal Ensemble Performs

Craven Arts Council and Gallery has joined Tryon Palace to sponsor the Voci Allegre Vocal Ensemble’s spring concert, “New Bern: Milestones in Music,” at 6pm on Friday, May 31 at the Cullman Performance Hall, NC History Center. Voci Allegre’s concert traces New Bern’s history through music, much of which was known during past times. This sentimental journey starts with the arrival of settlers and moves through the colonial and federal periods. The tumult of the Civil War and the time of the development of an

MUMFEST’s Bold New Look

The Swiss Bear Downtown Development Corporation asked talented local artist and designer Lisa Bisbee to create a new look for MUMFEST 2013. True to her talent, Bisbee has come up with an original and bold design that is sure to please. “Every year during the fall, I take photos of the brilliant autumn foliage. This year’s design is based on a digitally enhanced image,” said Bisbee. “I captured the photograph when the downtown merchants adorned New Bern’s streets with flowering mums during MUMFEST. The bold warm colors remind me of the harvest season during which MUMFEST takes place. I created a silhouette from the leaves and added white highlights with gestural artistic strokes. First Annual Exhibition Celebrated

On Friday, May 10, “Gathering” will be open to the public to celebrate the completion of a large interactive, multimedia installation sculpture. Over the past four months, parents, students and teachers from Craven County Schools have been working each Saturday from 9am until noon under the direction of Blake Wiggs and artist Jane E. Horner. The reception will be held from 5-8pm during the May 10 ArtWalk at the Historic City Laundry Building, located at 901-B Pollock St. Among the works being exhibited is “Bottled Messages,” originally intended to be a classroom project that will be installed in a large tree adjacent to the 901-B building. Teachers and students from Craven Early College and Early College East have constructed 15 strands of 100 plastic bottles, each with a message inside. It is their vision that this sculpture will travel to schools and classrooms as a method of visually representing US plastic bottle consumption per second. “Shine On” is a collaborative installation sculpture led by artist Jane E. Horner, where hundreds of plastic spirals spill down from the ceilings and there are long stretches of shimmering transparency. Simon Spalding returns to Trent River Coffee Company on Saturday, June 1, presenting “Around the World in 80 Tunes,” featuring musical instruments and tunes from near and far. Get ready 20

to embark on a magic carpet ride of fun, exotic sounds at this evening of musical globe-trotting. The instruments include a kemane from Uzbekistan; an oud and a cumbus from Turkey; a nyckelharpa from Sweden; an erhu from China; a domra from Russia; a hardangfele from Norway; a kyl kyiak from Kyrgyzstan; a sitar from India; and a tzouras from Greece. New instruments for this concert include a four-stringed instrument known as sihu in China, or dorvon chiktei huur in its native Mongolia, and an antique six-stringed Tahitian ukulele from the island of Moorea. Also from China is a zhonghu, the recently-developed “viola” of the erhu family.
