Our children will not inherit a multiple choice world … we must encourage and reward the creative thinker as they are the problem solvers of tomorrow. ~ Nnenna Freelon

hen the queen of jazz herself, Aretha Franklin, says “check out Nnenna Freelon” for her “very hip music,” you know that you’re in for a rare treat. The Pamlico Musical Society is bringing the six-time Grammy nominee to the Old Theater, Oriental, for a performance at 7:30pm on Friday, Nov. 11. Critics have hailed Freelon as the “international voice of jazz,” and her standing ovation from the star-studded audience of 20,000 at the Grammy Awards

affirms that claim. She has taken her place on stage and in the studio with jazz greats like Herbie Hancock, Ray Charles, Al Jarreau and the Count Basie Orchestra, to name a few, and led performances at Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, Monterey Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival and from Montreaux to London. Her silken voice renders timeless classics like “Take all of Me” and “Them There Eyes” fresh and original, while her own compositions brim with sassy charm. Los Angeles Times music critic Don Heckman writes that, as a jazz vocalist, Freelon has “positioned herself in the very top echelon.”

OLD THEATER

Despite the accolades, Freelon never loses touch with the source of her soulful sound. In fact, she describes her most recent CD, “Homefree” as her own “home brew” – recorded in Sound Pure Studios in Durham, where she has made her home for nearly 30 years. “Homefree” bubbles with the energy and creativeness that are hallmarks of her recordings and she identifies the album as “feeling at home in your own skin.” In addition to Freelon’s unquestioned standing as a jazz artist, her educational efforts also make her a much sought after speaker and instructor around the world. The workshops include knowledge on everything, from technique to life skills.

Freelon is presenting a workshop dedicated to vocal improvisation from 1-2pm on Friday, Nov. 11 at the Old Theater. “My workshops are centered on the idea that every person has creative potential,” she explains. Tickets to Nnenna Freelon’s concert are $20, and available by calling 252249-3670, or visiting www.pamlicomusic. org. You can pick up tickets at Nautical Wheelers, 411 Broad St., Oriental. NEW BERN Honors it s VETERANS

Cassie Horton photo

Veteran’s Day is a holiday formerly observed in the US as Armistice Day in commemoration of the signing of the Armistice ending World War I. An act of Congress officially named Nov. 11 as Veterans Day on May 24, 1954. The day is set aside in honor of all those who have fought in defense of the country and across the nation, with communities holding a variety of observances and commemorations in honor of heroes of yesterday and those serving in uniform today. New Bern is no exception. A large percentage of New Bern residents are active duty or retired military service members. According to 2010 Census data pulled from 2005 to 2009, 12,857 of New Bern’s 103,505 population are veterans. Karen Hacker works with the New Bern Disabled American Veteran’s Chapter and says that there are several veterans in the New Bern area, but they still need financial support to help purchase vans to drive veterans to area DAV clinics. She also said that there is always a need for volunteer drivers. The DAV also assists veterans file VA claims, as well as file paperwork for spouses who have lost their military sponsor. New Bern is also a very active participant in Honor Flights of Southeastern North Carolina. Tim McLear, flight director for the recent flight to DC in September, believes in the organizations mission to honor the brave service members who conquered and survived World War II. McLear 8

New Bern Magazine

said that the experience gained from participating in such an event is difficult to put into words. “The World War II Memorial was dedicated in 2004; however since the majority of veterans are over the age of 80, several are unable to make the trip. Honor flights are a way that the community can work together to provide an opportunity for veterans in the southeast to make the trip to DC to see their memorial. Once you make a trip, your commitment will only increase because you learn that they truly are humble heroes.” The Strength behind the Strong Support is the ultimate gift that you can give a service member and their family members. Often considered the “silent heroes” during times of war, it is important for community members to also remember the strength that military spouses and children contribute to support their service member. Missed birthdays and anniversaries and an absent member at the family dinner table each night are only part of the many difficulties associated with deployments and are often clear reminders of the incredible sacrifices made. Moments many of us may take for granted. “When troops are called to action, so too are their families. Military families sustain the troops that are defending America, tend to our wounded warriors and survive our fallen, in turn their nation has an obligation to serve them.”

CHERRY BRANCH MINNESOTT FERRY Free Ferry - 20 minutes 30 cars - Year-Round

In a place where boats outnumber its residents nearly three to one, the town of Oriental is a sailor’s refuge tucked away along the Neuse River, which oddly enough, earned its named from a Union Steamship that sank 33 miles north of Hatteras, near Bodie Island. The wife of Oriental’s founder and first postmaster, Lou Midyette, is said to have seen the transom of the vessel displayed years later at a home in Manteo and found it to be the ideal name for their little waterside hamlet. Boats are not just a part of Oriental’s history, they define it. Labeled the sailing capital of North Carolina, it’s common to find residents and visitors kayaking, fishing and sailing year round. Nearly 5-6,000 sailors come in to port each year from the Intracoastal Waterway, many for the collection of regattas held throughout the year. The town boasts a plethora of activities, a wealth of award-winning artisans, an active music scene, a theater group and a thriving community spirit. The year-round ferry, which carries 30 cars, docks at Minnesott Beach, just 10 miles from Oriental, making it accessible to points east and west.

Nestled along Hwy 70 between Morehead City and New Bern, Havelock is best know as the home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, now the largest air station in the world. From its landmark Harrier plane propped up halfway through town to the thundering sounds of passing jets, there is no mistaking the presence and effect the air station has on Havelock’s visitors and residents. A small community started in the mid-1800s, Havelock grew, in part, because of the union between Atlantic and North Carolina railroads. A depot was built at the crossing and named after British Gen. Henry Havelock. The 1940s and World War II brought with them MCAS Cherry Point and Havelock’s population exploded, from about 100 to approximately 22,500 people. Havelock enjoys visitors year round, with annual events like its NC Chili Festival and the Cherry Point Air Show, held each year in June, and natural attractions such as the Croatan National Forest and Neuse River. To learn more about Havelock, visit cityofhavelock.com. 10

ARTS Lunch & Learn, William McNeill The New Bern Historical Society is featuring an interesting program as part of its Lunch & Learn Series on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Chelsea Restaurant. Join guest speaker William McNeill as he presents a slide presentation entitled “Outside the Frame: The Astonishing Story of Whistler’s Mother.” McNeill will focus on Anna McNeill Whistler’s life in 19th century America, Russia and London, where she lived with her eccentric son, the artist James McNeill Whistler. McNeill, a relative of Anna McNeill, has traced the history of the “Whistler’s Mother” from a 19th century masterpiece to a 21st century American icon and popular culture object of caricature. Not only did William grow up listening to his parents and the fascinating stories about Anna and her controversial son, but he has spent countless hours reading Whistler biographies. He has also spent time at the Library of Congress

pouring over the private letters and journals of Mrs. Whistler, as well as corresponded with Whistler scholars. He is listed as a source in the 2003 British publication “Whistler’s Mother: An American Icon.” Discover the amazing story of this courageous woman whose exploits will astound you. “She is not the stern dour Puritan you might see in the portrait!” Tickets are $15 for members and $17 for nonmembers. Holscher’s primary medium is watercolor, but she also works in acrylics, pastels and oils. “It gives my life purpose to bring pleasure to others through my paintings. I love to create something unique that finds an emotional connecting chord in another person, said Holscher. “The greatest compliment I can receive is the appreciation someone has for the art that reflects my internal thoughts and feelings, making me the person I am. Ultimately, I find that painting provides a conduit for me to communicate with others without the use of written word, gestures or dialogue. Visit Holscher and learn why she was chosen as a finalist in the 24th annual Art Competition for Artist’s Magazine in the animal art category. Her work is featured throughout North Carolina.

Exploring Tucked away on the banks of the Neuse River, the city of New Bern offers the comforts of a modern riverside city with a historic tradition that dates back to Colonial times. In 1710, Swiss baron Christopher de Graffenried founded New Bern as the second-oldest town in North Carolina, naming the city after Bern, the Swiss capital. The bear proudly displayed throughout the city comes from the Swiss city’s name, taken from the German word “bärenâ€? or “bears.â€? While providing shopping and dining experiences on par with other major cities, New Bern maintains the spirit and feel of a small town. Visitors can explore 150 historic landmarks, many of which date back to the 18th

century. The revitalized historic district offers visitors a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants and historic homes. Tryon Palace is one of New Bern’s most popular historic sites. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace was built by British Governor William Tryon and served as the capital building in the later 1700s when New Bern was North Carolina’s capital. Tryon Palace hosted many famous people, including George Washington. New Bern is also famed for a late 1800s pharmacist named Caleb Bradham. Bradham mixed syrup of coca, kola nut extracts and rare oils with carbonated water to create the fizzy beverage known today as Pepsi Cola.

Affordable Elegance: When comparison pricing granite countertops be sure to also compare installations. This is where experience really matters. Experience matters when your kitchen is measured, it matters when the stone is fabricated, and finally when the countertops are installed in your home. National Marble has professionally installed more kitchens than anyone in Eastern NC. Our “hard seams,” like this one, speak for themselves. And good communication throughout the process matters. Visit Our Showroom & Linda will be glad to help. Your home is your most valuable asset, so treat it well at a cost you can afford!
