7 TH INTERNATIONAL MOBILE GAMING AWARDS
Dear friends, We are proud to present you our Annual Report. This year was a top year for the IMGA : we had extremely good entries, an amazingly skilful judging panel, wonderful sponsors and a very successful summit and awards ceremony. In the IMGA Satisfaction Poll we received a lot of detailed feedback from our audience, which we interpreted as an encouragement to continue in the same direction next year. The results of the Poll are included in this report. We would like to thank our sponsors, the participants, the judges, the speakers at our summit, and our hosts of the GSM Association and our collaborators to have helped us in making this into a great IMGA ! Please enjoy the report and we hope to see you all next year for the 8th IMGA. Maarten Noyons Jessica Rei

The business of mobile games in 2011
The 30 games nominated at the 7th IMGA showed an important increase in quality and production value. Developers are spending more time and resources on games than they were a few years back and that effort is showing. We are looking at production cycles of 5 to 8 months and budgets growing beyond 100,000 US$, to the 2 Million US$ range, the costs of Firemint’s Real Racer 2. Another trend that is becoming more generalized now is the use of tools to analyze performance, optimize games and generate revenues: Distimo, Flurry, Scoreloop Open Feint, Plus Plus, Tap Me, Tap Joy and Admob. In general, we think the business is becoming more mature, but as far as we can see it is still a very open market where there is still a place for individual developers, start ups and both small and larger studios. From a business perspective, the App store continued to dominate the sales of mobile games, with 1,7 Billion US$ in 2010, whereas RIM (165 million US$), Android Market (102 Million US$) and Ovi Store (115 Million US$) are not even reaching 10% of that number. The bottom line is that some developers are making a lot of money. Last year made me think of 2005, when many analysts thought mobile games were going to grow through the roof. Today, 5 years later, I am seeing the same interesting variations in forecasts:
According to IDC, Apps revenues will gross 35 US$ billion in 2014, Gartner forecasts over 50 US$ billion and Forester sticks with 25 US$ billion. Now let’s say, conservatively, that mobile games are generating 50% of all App revenues. Some people claim this figure is nearer 60%, but with 50% we will be looking at a market somewhere between 12.5 US$ billion and 25 US$ billion by 2015. What will be the main drivers of growth? Who is going to make that number go in the right direction? Obviously good games, good devices and good app stores. If consumers continue to get a large variety of superior products for the right price and with a good service, these numbers will grow with the growth of smartphone penetration. However, a lot of other trends could threaten the growth of mobile games revenues and the profitability of game development, I’ll mention a few here.
Free versus paid. Is free becoming the predominant business model for games? Everybody seems to think so. The Free business model is based on either ad revenues or a system based on virtual currency or in-app purchasi. Now this seems to work on the iPhone, but we still have to see this happening on other platforms, especially Google.

Android is set to become the dominant platform in the years ahead. But from a revenue perspective is still a lot to be done here. The industry expects Google to take a more dominant role in steering Android and to push the platform beyond IOS. Technically they may be successful, but commercially they are very far behind the App Store. There is definitely a role for other players here. The operators who are
sponsoring Android handsets are creating their own smartphone stores and they could potentially help the Android Apps market grow. They have an extremely powerful tool: operator billing.
Maybe the android handset manufacturers can play a role in increasing the growth of the Android market, but I personally think that that they should prioritize the fight against fragmentation of Android handsets, to make it easier to launch Android games on all handsets and create a great platform. At the Mobile World Congress and at GDC everybody was talking about Microsoft and Nokia. The bottom line is that Nokia smartphone sales will be disappointing in the next two quarters. Who will want to invest in anything other than the Microsoft handset they will bring out by the end of the year? I am expecting a lot of text from Nokia over the coming months explaining that Symbian is not dead, and neither is Meego, nor QT‌ The good news, however, is that Windows 7 is a great platform and their transmedia approach with Xbox Live will bring a lot of developers into the mobile games industry. Let’s see what happens. Looking ahead from where we are now, with 111 App stores and more than 12 operating systems, I wonder where we will be 11 months from now when we celebrate the 8th IMGA. Will Nokia show their first Android handset, next to the Windows phone? Will we have a stronger Android Market and a massive move from Apple to Android? What about the other platforms? One thing is sure. We will be there for the 8th year as an independent, platform agnostic award. This year, for the first time, we organized an IMGA Mobile Games Summit the morning before the Awards Ceremony. Given the reactions of both our audience and our sponsors we have already decided to do it again. In the late summer of this year we will launch the 8th IMGA. We are already looking forward to it!
