2010 SEASON PREVIEW Eagles Looking for More “O” in 2010 NCCU boasts 17 returners

The North Carolina Central University baseball team has a wealth of experience returning from a trying 2009 campaign that saw NCCU finish up a disappointing 6-35, but the optimism for this program and the direction it is heading is as high as ever going into the team’s fourth season since bringing back the sport in 2006. Head Coach Dr. Henry White has set forth many goals for this team, but one thing he has learned in this transition is the key to being a good team at this level is one thing; offense. That’s his focus heading into the season. “We’re looking to improve in all aspects of the game, but for us to be successful at the Division I level, we have to have nine guys in the lineup that can hit,” said White. “We’re going to identify players on this team that can hit in all situations.” Last season, NCCU hit just .245 as a team with nine home runs and 113 runs batted in, and senior Kurt Wilson (Riverdale, Ga.) led the squad with 15 RBIs. Sophomore Akeem Hood returns as the team leader in batting average sitting at the leadoff spot in the order hitting .322 and going 16-for-19 in stolen base attempts. His play last season earned him recognition as he was named to the All-PING! Freshman Team. “When he is at his best, he is the ignitor for this offense,” stated White “When he plays well, we play well.” Also returning for his third season is Blake Murray (Wendell, N.C.), who finished third on the team batting .283 while also finishing second on the squad with seven doubles. Murray’s biggest accomplishment last season was his 19-game hitting streak that he nearly took into the offseason if not for inclement weather ending the final game against Maryland Eastern Shore. Third baseman David Scott (Bunn, N.C.) ended the year strong with a home run in the season finale against UMES. He could be a vital cog for the Eagle offense, but the

2

Akeem Hood newcomer that White has his eye on is freshman Derrell Parker (North Miami Beach, Fla.). “This kid has a ton of potential,” said White. “During the fall he hit close to .400 and was doing the things we asked of him; Hitting to the gaps, hitting to the opposite field, and making good decisions in the situations that some players can panic in. If he can do that during the regular season, he’s going to surprise some people.” The Eagles are certainly not ignoring the defensive aspects of the game, and on the mound NCCU returns every pitcher from last season and also welcomes in four newcomers that should make an impact immediately. Tabbed as the team’s No. 1 starter, junior transfer Drew Robinson (Carthage, N.C.) should feel right at home. Standing at 6-6, Robinson was a vital member of the 2009 Region 10 Division II Championship squad at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville, N.C. “We’re looking for Drew to step in and be our No. 1 starter this year,” said White. “He brings a wealth of experience to this team and his ability should help us tremendously. He’s been in those pressure situations before and he came through for his team. We look for him to do the same here at NCCU.” New to the fold at NCCU, Jasper Jones (Hookerton, N.C.), Glenn Frye (Lillington, N.C.), and Joe Winecoff (Hillsborough, N.C.) begin their first season in maroon and gray and are expected to really compete for mound time this year. All three

are freshmen who were counted on at their respective high schools to produce on the hill. “I expect Glenn and Jasper to compete as starters and Winecoff is someone we want to count on to close out ballgames and give us more depth in our pitching staff,” stated White. Of the veterans that return on the mound, sophomore Brandon Strickland (Bunn, N.C.) made the most of his freshman season ending 2009 with a 6.95 earned run average and leading the team in wins with two. His best performance came on March 25 when he threw a complete game against Virginia State earning the win allowing just three runs. Strickland pitched 44 innings last year and fanned 20 batters. Junior Brandon Oatis (Matthews, N.C.) looks to regain his earlyseason form of last year when he single-handedly shut down the Savannah State lineup in game two of the doubleheader sweep of the Tigers on March 7. Oatis struck out seven batters in a 3-2 Eagle victory. He and fellow lefty senior Joseph Cobb (Raleigh, N.C.) present numerous matchups in favor of NCCU. The Eagles boast just five seniors on the 2010 roster, including Justin Goodson (Stone Mountain, Ga.), James Jordan (Bryson City, N.C.), Tim McAlister (Raleigh, N.C.), Kurt Wilson and Cobb. All five hold a solid place in the eyes of White. “These five student-athletes represent the beginning of the program,” said White. “They came here with nothing except the chance to play Division I baseball and they have given everything they have to this university and program and I will never forget that.” For this baseball program that is just four years old, the transition continues, but the progress is there. It’s only a matter of time before the rewards are seen.

The Schedule Fifty games dot the slate in 2010 with NCCU moving to its new home, historic Durham Athletic Park. Entering NCCU’s fourth season since bringing the sport in 2006, the Eagles are set to battle teams from 11 different conferences (Atlantic Coast Conference, Atlantic Sun Conference, Atlantic 10 Conference, Big South Conference, Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Colonial Athletic Association, Conference USA, Metro Atlantic Athletic Association, Mid-Eastern Athletic Association, Patriot League, and Southern Conference). NCCU will also face 15 teams that won 20 games or more in 2009, including two NCAA Tournament participants (Georgia State and East Carolina). The newly renovated DAP has NCCU hosting 21 home games, including the season-opening Eagle Baseball Classic. From Feb. 19-21, NCCU will host Iona, Navy, and Delaware State in round-robin action. “The whole purpose of the Eagle Baseball Classic was to try to start the season at home, especially with our new facility,” said NCCU head baseball coach, Dr. Henry White. “That’s what we were looking for. I’m trying to make sure that we stay off the road as much as we can. We’ve traveled a ton since bringing this program back and it’s a great advantage for our program if we can stay home, and the new facility (Durham Athletic Park) will allow us to do just that. My vision for the tournament is to see it grow each and every year. This is something we want establish as an annual event.” After the round-robin tournament, NCCU hosts Davidson on Feb. 23, and week later the Eagles host Longwood before heading out on the road for a five-game road trip. The first road

contest of the season takes place up in Williamsburg, Va. where the Eagles will take on William and Mary from the Colonial Athletic Association. Last season, the Tribe finished one game below .500 with a 24-25 record overall and 9-14 in CAA action. The next four contests take place on the first weekend in March. NCCU has a four-game series with the defending CAA Tournament champions, Georgia State. That takes place Friday night March 5 at 6:00 in Atlanta, Ga. The following day the Panthers and the Eagles will tangle in a doubleheader, culminating with a single game on March 7 with first pitch set at noon. “We played them our first year back and I thought we played them well, but playing a team like Georgia State is a great barometer to see how much our program has grown, especially this early in the year,” said White. “This will give us a good indication of what our strengths and weaknesses are.” Three days later, the Eagles return home for a six-game homestand taking on three different teams in doubleheader action over a three-day span. On March 10, NCCU hosts Norfolk State, and on March 12 Presbyterian comes to the Bull City. All Eagle fans should have March 13 and 14 circled on their calendars as the Eagles and the Aggies of North Carolina A&T will go toe-to-toe in Durham for doubleheader action on Saturday starting at 1:00, then change venues for a single contest on Sunday in Greensboro with a 1:00 first pitch as well. It’s a series that Coach White can’t wait for. “I’m really excited to see how we can recuperate from the one game we played them last year. I’m not quite sure our players full understand the rivalry yet. This is our arch rival, and when we go out on the field you can throw the records out the window.” White’s squad also has three Atlantic Coast Conference teams on his schedule with an early season home contest

against N.C. State slated for March 16 at 6:00 p.m. at historic Durham Athletic Park. The return game between the Pack and the Eagles takes place on April 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park. NCCU’s 2010 schedule features four more MidEastern Athletic Conference teams (Coppin State, Delaware State, Maryland Eastern Shore, Norfolk State, and previously mentioned North Carolina A&T). White has his eyes on a bigger picture with NCCU entering the MEAC. “My goal is for us to be in the upper echelon of the league as soon as we are eligible for championships,” said White. “The top team in the MEAC now is Bethune-Cookman and we want our program to get to that point. Playing those MEAC schools will assist in getting us to that level.” Following the three game home-and-home series against A&T, NCCU travels up north to the Charm City to take on Coppin State University in a three-game set starting on Friday, March 19 at 3:00 p.m. A noon doubleheader sets the scene for day two in the “Battle of the Eagles” on Saturday, March 20. The following week finds NCCU back on the road again, in the middle of a season-long seven-game road swing as the Eagles travel to Asheville, N.C. to take on UNC Asheville for an afternoon affair on Wednesday, March 24. First pitch is set for 2:00. Two days later, NCCU travels 108 miles to take on the Pirates of East Carolina University. In 2009, East Carolina lost to College World Series participant North Carolina in the Super Regional after winning its own regional in Greenville. ECU finished 2009 as regular season champ in Conference USA with a record of 46-20 that included a 17-7 mark in league action. The rabid Pirate fans will see ECU and NCCU get the three-game set started Friday night 7:00 at beautiful ClarkLeClair Stadium. Game two of the series is set for 3:00 in the afternoon on Saturday, followed by a Sunday afternoon series finale at 1:00.

2010 SEASON PREVIEW “We have an opportunity to go, and see how our players measure up individually,” White said. “Last season, ECU had 20 young men that batted .317 or better. That’s what I need for our young men to understand, you have to be ready to play everybody. I purposely added teams like this to our schedule. I want our kids to taste what its like to take on a top 25 baseball team.” The following Tuesday, NCCU faces its only NCAA Division II opponent in Virginia State University. That contest is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on March 30. On the final day of March, the crosstown showdown between NCCU and Duke commences as a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m. at the new home field for the Eagles. The first weekend of April sees the Eagles heading down to Savannah, Ga. as NCCU visits Savannah State for a weekend three-game set. Last season, the Eagles and Tigers played six times with SSU holding a 4-2 advantage. These two squads will meet six more times this season with the Tigers returning to the Bull City for three games on April 10-11. The final ACC opponent for NCCU is Virginia Tech, as the Eagles venture up to Blacksburg, Va. on April 6 for a 5:30 p.m. affair against the Hokies. Two days later, NCCU travels to Farmville, Va. to battle the Lancers of Longwood University. Following the home series against Savannah State, NCCU hits the road in three out of its next four starting with a rematch

against local foe N.C. State on April 13. That contest is slated for a 6:30 start at Doak Field. Four days later, the Eagles head down to Davidson to begin a three-game home-and-home stand with the Wildcats ,starting with a twinbill on April 17 and a single game on April 18 back in the Bull City. Eight of the final 10 games in the 2010 season for NCCU are on the road, beginning with an April 21 ballgame at Charlotte at 6:00. Charlotte won 33 games last season and finished with a 16-11 record in the Atlantic 10 Conference. A week later, the Eagles face soon-to-be conference foe Norfolk State, and finish up the road swing at Campbell on April 30. The following afternoon is the first day of May but the final two games for NCCU’s seniors, as the Eagles battle Campbell in a Senior Day doubleheader. NCCU ends the season for the second straight year against Maryland Eastern Shore, but this time around the Eagles take on the Hawks up north in Princess Ann, Md. for a four-game season-ending series. That series begins on May 8 at noon. “The main purpose of this schedule was to be a competitive one,” said White. “As far as I’m concernced, I’m expecting a lot more wins. The stage we’re in right now, we may be a young program, but we just have to experience some winning. These kids can play, they just haven’t experienced winning together as a team, and this schedule is set up to do that.”

COACHING STAFF Dr. Henry White

Head Coach Saint Augustine’s ‘72

25th Season: 4th Season at NCCU Career Record: (360-361), Record at NCCU: (33-89) Coach Henry E. White enters his 35th year of coaching, with experience that began in the public school sector to the present on the collegiate level at North Carolina Central University. White, a native of Monroe, N.C., began his outstanding coaching background on the middle school level as the Boy’s Basketball and Baseball Coach. Under his reign, the middle school team won their first basketball championship in his first year as head coach. He began his collegiate career at his alma mater, Saint Augustine’s College in Raleigh, N.C., as both the Assistant Coach of the baseball team and the Assistant Coach of the men’s basketball team. At the young age of 29, White became Head Coach of the baseball team the following season. He served in this capacity for the next 21 years. One of the highlights of his coaching career in baseball and basketball was in 1984, when his baseball team won the NAIA District 26 Tournament Championship and advanced to the NAIA Regional Playoff in Bluefield, W.Va. The team placed third in the Regional games. In addition that same year, the basketball team played for the national championship finishing second under his direction. White won eight conference championships in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and six tournament championships during his tenure. The latest baseball championship was in 1999 as the CIAA Tournament Champions, followed by a runner-up finish in 2000. He has a career record of 360 wins and 359 losses. In NCCU’s first season back to baseball after dropping the sport in 1975, the Eagles brought along the championship accolades. The Inaugural Eagle squad ran through the CIAA going 15-5, taking the 2007 CIAA regular season title, finishing the season at 2124. It was that performance by the Eagles that garnered 2007 CIAA Coach of the Year honors to Henry White, and built more enthusiasm for a program on the move up to the elite level of college athletics. The second season was the team’s first in division one and the 48-game schedule was loaded with 27 games against Division I opponents, while the other 21 were against teams from the Division II level. This first Division I schedule proved to be an education in itself as NCCU ended up going 6-30 in their rookie Division I season. The second season for NCCU saw some small successes in a season filled with challenges. With a much-more challenging schedule the Eagles swept its first doubleheader against Savannah State on March 7, 2009 along with slaying its first Division I opponent. NCCU under Dr. Henry White’s direction is headed to the right path, the road along with way has been filled with bumps and detours, but with his knowledge and leadership the road will smooth itself out before too long. On Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, White was inducted into Saint Augustine’s College Falcon Foundation Athletic Hall of Fame for his nearly 30 years of service to his alma mater.

COACHING STAFF Chris Smith

Assistant Coach - 3rd Season North Carolina Central University (’85) Chris Smith returns for his thrid season on Dr. Henry White’s coaching staff. In charge of the pitchers, Smith brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. Plenty of talent comes along with his experience in the coaching venue as he starred at North Johnston High School, playing both in the outfield and toeing the rubber. The Micro, N.C. product was a three-year letterman for the Panthers, earning All-Conference honors his junior and senior year, along with All-Area and All-State his senior season. Smith also played semi-pro baseball with both the Selma Jayhawks and the Carolina Titans Baseball club for four years after his high school career. When Smith’s playing career was over, he took that knowledge gained from his time on the diamond and used it in the coaching circuit of nearly every age group in the Raleigh area from Pony league all the way to AAU Baseball for 12 years. He also went to numerous coaching clinics to work on his craft, including the Ripken Baseball Coaching Clinic in Baltimore, Md. With all of Smith’s hard work and dedication to coaching, in 2004 he was awarded the Fred Fletcher Outstanding Volunteer Award for athletics from the City of Raleigh. The 1985 North Carolina Central University graduate finished with an accounting degree and was named Chancellor’s Scholar, General Mills Scholar, along with being inducted into the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society.

Ken Valentine

Assistant Coach - 4th Season Morristown College

Returning for his fourth season in maroon and gray, Ken Valentine is the hitting coach and is also in charge of the infield. Valentine brings professional baseball experience to the program, as the native of Asheville, N.C. was selected in the 20th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Chicago White Sox in 1967. Drafted as a shortstop, Valentine spent four years with both the White Sox and Red Sox organizations, making it as high as the Double-A ranks, playing for the Pawtucket Red Sox. The French Broad High School graduate came to the Durham area after his playing career ended and became a staple for baseball. From 1975 to 1982, Valentine coached Sheperd Middle School’s baseball team. After his time there, he took his knowledge of America’s pastime to the high school level where he took over the Durham Hillside High School baseball program and became assistant football coach. Valentine stayed there until 1987 when he switched viewpoints on the diamond from coach to umpire, doing that for the Cap-Metro Area Umpires Association from 1987-1998. Ending his 11-year coaching hiatus, Valentine took the position as assistant football Coach at Riverside High School in Durham for one season before returning to cross- town foe Hillside in 2002. That’s where Valentine stayed until NCCU decided to revive its baseball program in 2007. When one thinks about baseball in the Durham area, Ken Valentine is a name that always pops up. His years of knowledge and dedicated service to the Bull City have paid huge dividends for the baseball program.

NCCU BASEBALL HISTORY

The Pioneers of NCCU Athletics The North Carolina Central University baseball program traces its roots back to the early 1900s. In fact, baseball was the first sport initiated at NCCU, at what was then known as National Religious Training School and Chautauqua in the 1910-1911 season. The baseball program has come and gone throughout the 20th century, remaining a prominent sport from its inception until 1975, when the program was dropped. In 2006, the NCCU Athletics Department decided to make the jump from the NCAA’s Division II level to Division I. With that jump, baseball was brought back once again after a 32 year hiatus. The first game back from the long hibernation took place on February 7, 2007 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park against Wingate University. It took little time for the NCCU baseball program to announce its reawakening. After being dormant for 32 years, Head Coach Dr. Henry White led his first NCCU baseball squad to an 11-5 record in the CIAA, winning the regular season championship. That season has set the tone for the program as NCCU continues its transition to Division I.

1911 Baseball Team According to a Master’s Thesis by George L. Samuel, baseball was the first sport organized at what was then the National Training School and Chautauqua in 1910. Players were Marion Thompson, Clifton Gardner, James R. Paterson, Benny Henderson, Charles Paterson, Louis Hatsfield, Bishop Faison, Samuel Saunders, Moses Williams, and Elmore Brown. The coach was Louis “Mighty” Bumpus, a local businessman.

CHANCELLOR NELMS Chancellor Charlie Nelms assumed his duties as Chancellor of North Carolina Central University August 1, 2007. Prior to joining the NCCU family, Nelms served as vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs at Indiana University, which enrolls approximately 100,000 students on eight campuses. In his role as IU’s vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs, Nelms was responsible for a combination of duties on the Bloomington campus and systemwide that spanned university planning, institutional research and effectiveness, enrollment management, student affairs, academic support services, K-12 outreach initiatives, student

retention, honors programs, and diversity and equity efforts. In September 2001, TIME magazine named IU’s Bloomington campus the number-one studentcentered research university in the nation. Many of the programs cited by TIME were under Nelms’ oversight and direction. A native of Crawfordsville, Arkansas, Nelms majored in agronomy and chemistry at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, graduating in 1968. He later earned a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs (1971) and a doctoral degree in higher education administration (1977) from Indiana University. Early in his career, he rose through the faculty and administrative ranks as associate dean for Student Development at Earlham College in Indiana (1973-1977), associate director of the Center for Human Development and Education Services at the UAPB (19771978), associate dean for Academic Affairs at Indiana University Northwest (1978-1984) and vice president for Student Services at Sinclair Community College in Ohio (1984- 1987). In 1987, Nelms began a sevenyear tenure as chancellor of Indiana University East, a commuter campus serving east-central Indiana. During his tenure there, the campus was the fastest-growing college in the State of Indiana. In 1994, Nelms was named chancellor of the University of Michigan at Flint (UMF), an urban campus that enrolls over 6,500 students and offers a full spectrum of undergraduate and master’s degree programs. Before being recruited to Indiana University in 1998, he resolved a significant campus budget deficit, reversed a four-year enrollment decline, and secured more than $75 million in private gifts to UMF. A former American Council on Education Fellow and Ford Fellow, Nelms holds honorary degrees from Earlham College and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous

NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY

History In 1910, Dr. James E. Shepard envisioned and founded a school that prepared African American adults for leadership roles in our nation’s communities. Founded as the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua, North Carolina Central University (NCCU) became the nation’s first state-supported historically black liberal arts college. In 1923, the National Training School became the state-supported Durham State Normal School, devoted to “the training of teachers for the Colored Public Schools of North Carolina.” Two years later, Dr. Shepard was able to persuade the General Assembly to take a revolutionary step, making the institution a liberal arts college and naming it North Carolina College for Negroes in 1925. The School of Law was established in 1940 and the School of Library Science in 1941. By the time of Dr. Shepard’s death on October 6, 1947, the institution that had become North Carolina College at Durham was fully-accredited, highly respected and had become the alma mater of a growing list of distinguished alumni. Today, under the leadership of Chancellor Charlie Nelms, NCCU is a comprehensive university offering more than 100 bachelor’s degrees in various disciplines, 40 master’s degree programs and three professional degrees in law. The university reaches out to all racial and ethnic groups, and has a diverse student population of more than 8,000. New Initiatives NCCU is on the cutting edge with its Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise known as BRITE. The institute offers new bachelor’s and master’s degrees in pharmaceutical science. These programs provide students with core

scientific competencies in biology or chemistry as well as hands-on laboratory practice. In addition, there are seminar courses in drug development operations, FDA regulations, quality assurance and control, and intellectual property and patent law. NCCU’s BRITE is an important part of the statewide initiative to make North Carolina a premiere provider of skilled workers for the biotechnology industry. The School of Law has won kudos for providing top-notch legal education. According to Vault, Inc., a publishing firm that researches and collects data on diverse professions, the law school has not received the acknowledgment it is due. Vault surveyed 512 recruiters who identified 25 “underrated” schools, and the NCCU School of Law was ranked at number 14. NCCU and the African American Jazz Caucus are partnering to form the NCCU/AAJC Jazz Research Institute (NAJRI) in an effort to preserve the integrity of jazz as an African American art form. One of the functions of the Institute will be to address the critical artistic and economic situation of jazz in the African American community as well as develop other initiatives such as a North Carolina Hall of Fame dedicated to highlighting the work of jazz artists from North Carolina. In an effort to bring more study abroad options to students, NCCU has been accepted as a member of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), a nonprofit membership organization that provides affordable and diverse study abroad and exchange opportunities to students around the world. NCCU is only one of four historically black college or university in the ISEP network. ISEP membership makes it possible for NCCU students to study abroad at over 135 different universities in 39 countries. NCCU is the first historically black institution in the nation to have an athletic training education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS N o r t h Ca ro l i n a Ce nt ra l University is competing in its second year of reclassification as an NCAA Division I institution (Football Championship Subdivision), and the Eagles will be playing as an independent during the 2008-09 athletics campaign. Fourteen men’s and women’s sports teams participate in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition at the Division I-FCS level. Men’s intercollegiate teams include football, basketball, baseball, indoor and outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and cross country. Women’s intercollegiate teams include basketball, volleyball, indoor and outdoor track & field, tennis, softball, bowling and cross country. NCCU’s athletic programs have enjoyed regional and national recognition for years, headlined by the 1989 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship. NCCU’s commitment to a balanced athletic program, providing equitable resources to all of its sports teams, is abundantly

apparent. In five of the last eight years in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), NCCU claimed the Loretta Taylor AllSports Trophy, recognizing the top all-around women’s program in the conference. In 2007-08, NCCU’s first season of Division I (FCS) competition, the women’s volleyball team kicked off the Division I era with a dramatic, come-from-behind win over N.C. State, then cruised to 21 victories, all against Division I opponents. The football team finished its first Division I season with a 6-4 record, the Eagles fourth straight winning season. The men’s and women’s cross country teams each won four of their seven events. The men’s basketball team played one of the toughest schedules in the country, while traveling more than 22,000 miles and playing in 13 different states. The squad earned a road victory over the eventual MidEastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champions and capped the season with a win over rival Winston-Salem State University at the MEAC Tournament. Finally, the track and field program won two events at the prestigious Penn Relays and qualified two student-athletes for the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston. In 2006-07, NCCU’s final season in the NCAA Division II, the Eagles placed 24th in the final standings of the U.S. Sports Academy Direc tors’ Cup, the prestigious award presented annually to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country.

The 1989 men’s basketball team won the NCAA Division II National Championship by defeating Southeast Missouri State 73-46 in the title game on March 25, 1989. The Eagles also captured an NCAA Division II Regional Championship in 1993.

Legendary track & field coach Dr. LeRoy T. Walker, who served as President of the U.S. Olympic Committee during the 1996 Atlanta Games, led the Eagles to 30 national titles, 77 All-America citations, and eight Olympic medals.

In 2006-07, NCCU won four CIAA team championships and participated in nine NCAA Division II Championship events. Several former student-athletes and coaches are nationally and internationally known. Heading the charge of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games was Dr. LeRoy T. Walker, President of the U.S. Olympic Committee, who lifted the Eagle track & field program to international prominence during his unprecedented tenure as head coach at NCCU. Under Walker’s reign, the Eagles produced 30 national titles, 77 All-Americans, and eight Olympic medalists. Legendary basketball practitioner, John B. McLendon, a member of the National Basketball Hall of Fame, established a remarkable record of 239-68 (.779) as an Eagle head coach from 1940 to 1952. A student of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of the game of basketball, McLendon is credited with the development of the zone press, fast break and four corners offense. Boston Celtics great Sam Jones, a student-athlete under McLendon and a fellow Hall-of-Famer, became the first black player to be drafted in the first round after scoring a record 1,745 points during his stellar NCCU career. Internationally-renowned artist, Ernie Barnes - best-known for his famous paintings seen on the 1970s sitcom “Good Times” - played football for the NCCU prior to a professional gridiron career with the Baltimore Colts, San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos.

Ingrid Wicker-McCree Director of Athletics

Ingrid Wicker-McCree, Ed.D. was appointed as the Director of Athletics at North Carolina Central University on April 23, 2008, after holding the interim position for five months. She officially began her new leadership role on May 1, 2008. Wicker-McCree,who joined the rank of only a handful of women athletic directors in the UNC system, previously served as NCCU’s associate athletics director for internal affairs. She has served in a variety of leadership positions in both conference and national level organizations, most notably as president of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Executive Board from 2004-06, becoming only the second woman to ever hold that position in the league’s history. In addition, she served as a member of the NCAA’s Division II Legislation Committee from 2003-07. In recognition of her work, Wicker-McCree received the CIAA Leadership Award for Service as president of the Executive Board and was named the CIAA Senior Woman Administrator of the Year in the spring of 2006. Now in her 15th year at NCCU, Wicker-McCree has been one of the driving forces behind NCCU’s reclassification to NCAA Division I. Since 1998, she has overseen the internal operations of the Athletics Department, including all compliance and eligibility programs. Her impact on this university's athletic department has been immense. It has been her strong leadership skills that have enabled NCCU to make the trek to Division I a successful one thus far. With her steadfast and forward thinking she has increased the number of staff members two-fold while merging and creating a brand-new fund raising arm for the Athletic department, The Eagle Club. Not to mention the nearly one million dollars worth of upgrades to O'Kelly Riddick Stadium with the brand-new Mondoturf playing surface and the newlyinstalled videoscoreboard called, "Eaglevision". Those are just a few of the changes and additions that she has set in motion during her time, and those will certainly go a long way into planting the seeds of her legacy. Wicker-McCree began her career at NCCU as the head coach for women’s volleyball and softball. She became the first coach in NCCU history to win conference championships in multiple sports, capturing the school’s first-ever CIAA titles in softball (1998) and volleyball (1999, 2004, 2005). A three-time CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year (1999, 2002, 2005) and former member of the NCAA Division II National Volleyball Committee, Wicker-McCree earned 239 match victories in 12 seasons as head volleyball coach at NCCU. She was also inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 as head coach of the 1998 softball team. A native of Durham and graduate of C.E. Jordan High School, Wicker-McCree played on two North Carolina high school state volleyball championship teams, while also lettering in basketball and track and field. She continued her volleyball playing career as a student-athlete at George Washington University. Wicker-McCree earned her undergraduate degree in

criminal justice from George Washington University in 1989, and a master’s degree in recreation resources administration from North Carolina State University in December 1991. She also completed doctoral studies in higher education administration at North Carolina State University in June 2008. She began her coaching career as Ingrid Wicker-McCree (above) accepts a graduate assistant the 2007 Loretta Taylor All-Sports Trophy, coach for the recognizing the top all-around women's women’s volleyball program in the conference, from Jeffrey program at N.C. She then NCCU acceptance into the MEAC. spent two seasons (1992-93) as head volleyball coach and student-athlete academic counselor at North Carolina A&T State University before returning to her hometown to begin her NCCU tenure in August 1994. Wicker-McCree has been involved as a player and coach in the USA Volleyball Carolina Region. She also served as director of three USAV Junior Olympic Teams (ages 18, 16, 14 and under) and director of the Y.M.C.A. Middle School Girls’ Volleyball Camp (ages 10-14). Wicker-McCree and her husband, Geno McCree, a threesport collegiate student-athlete and 1991 graduate of Elon University, are the proud parents of Alexia (11), Quinton (9) and Sydney (5).

The New Eagle Club If you haven’t heard, there’s a new booster club at North Carolina Central University. It’s the all-new Eagle Club. Yes, more than a half-dozen of our athletic booster clubs, including the original longstanding Eagle Club, have joined forces to create a superpower club that provides scholarship support for all NCCU student-athletes. It’s an important step forward as we move up to Division I.

If you’re a previous booster club member, your past giving history will be recognized when you continue on with the new Eagle Club. For everyone who contributes, this is your chance to become a charter member of the new Eagle Club. As a member, you’ll be part of the only fundraising organization for the athletic department sanctioned by the university.

That’s right, all NCCU teams are going Division I. This is big time. As one unified booster club, we’ll be a more structured organization that combines the efforts of our most dedicated supporters. Likewise, it strengthens our ability to build championship teams as we advance to a more challenging level of play.

Next to student-athletes, our supporters are the most important assets to our athletic program. With your help, we’ll be able to offer more scholarships to the most talented student-athletes, as well as provide them with world-class facilities. For more details about the Eagle Club, call (919) 530-7057 or visit www.NCCUEagleClub.com.

MEAC HISTORY a Division I conference by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Prior to that year the league operated as a Division II conference. The following month the MEAC received an automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. Currently, the league has automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason play in baseball (since 1994), men's basketball (since 1981), women's basketball (since 1982), football (since 1996), softball (since 1995), men and women's tennis (since 1998), and volleyball (since 1994). History: In 1969, a bold ad hoc group of innovators long associated with intercollegiate athletics met in Durham, N.C., to discuss the feasibility of organizing a new conference. Dissected from these discussions, a steering and planning committee was formed to fully investigate the idea, present a detailed report with recommendations to interested collegiate institutions, and then construct a workshop to outline proposals. After adopting a program, seven institutions (Delaware State College, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State College) agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Its major objective was to establish, organize and supervise an intercollegiate athletic program among a compact group of educational institutions of high academic standards and with a sound philosophy of co-curricular activities. The league agreed to seek Division I status for its sports. The conference was confirmed in 1970, kicking off its first season of competition in football in 1971. In 1978, a milestone was reached when the MEAC selected Kenneth A. Free to be its first full-time commissioner. He had been preceded by three interim (part-time) commissioners: Dr. Leroy Walker (1971-74); who later had the distinction of serving as the President of

the United States Olympic Committee, the late Earl Mason (1974-75) and the late Dr. James Young (1975-78). Kenneth A. Free served the conference for 18 years before stepping down in May of 1996. In July of 1996, Charles S. Harris was named commissioner and served in the capacity until April 2002. Longtime MEAC administrator Brenda H. McCoy served two stints as Interim Commissioner, one in 1996 (May-June) and again in 2002 (April-August). On September 1, 2002, Dr. Dennis E. Thomas was named the commissioner and has served in the position for seven years. The leagues' first expansion occurred in October 1979 when Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A&M University were voted into the MEAC as new members. Original members Morgan State, North Carolina Central and Maryland Eastern Shore withdrew from the conference at the end of the 1979-80 fiscal year. Maryland Eastern Shore was readmitted in 1981 and Morgan State returned in 1984. Florida A&M opted to resign in 1984 but rejoined the conference in 1986. Coppin State College was granted admittance in 1985, becoming the ninth member institution. The MEAC expanded again in the 1990's with the inclusion of Hampton University (1995) and Norfolk State University (1997). The final expansion occurred in 2007, with the addition of Winston-Salem State University.

The MEAC initiated cross country in 1980 and North Carolina A&T earned the inaugural men's crown. The first women's cross country championship took place a year later with Howard winning the first of its seven titles. Indoor Track and Field was also added in 1981 with South Carolina State capturing the men's title and Howard winning the women's crown. Tennis and golf returned as MEAC governed sports in 1981, after a five-year hiatus. South Carolina State won all seven of the league's golf championships from 1972-1983 before the sport was discontinued after the 1983 championship. Morgan State dominated the conference in wrestling winning 13 of 24 conference championships during the sports tenure from 1972 through 1995. Baseball, which began in 1972, was discontinued following the 1977 season. It was brought back as a MEAC governed sport along with women's volleyball in 1983. Women's softball became a MEAC sanctioned sport in 1992. Bowling was officially sanctioned as a MEAC governed sport in 1999. Before that season, the MEAC was the first conference to secure NCAA sanctioning for women's bowling by adopting the club sport prior to the 1996-97 school year.

On June 8, 1980, the MEAC was classified as

DURHAM ATHLETIC PARK: THE HOME OF NCCU BASEBALL

DURHAM ATHLETIC PARK: THE HOME OF NCCU BASEBALL Renovated Park gives NCCU a brand-new home with vintage look The 2010 baseball season sees the North Carolina Central Univeristy baseball team move right down the street to the historic Durham Athletic Park, which will serve as a training ground for Minor League Baseball among having the Eagles as a tenant. This will be another facility that is top notch for a baseball program that is on the rise as the NCCU athletics department continues this transition to Division I. The DAP has close to the same dimensions of the older version with a 16-foot fence in right field standing just 290 feet from home plate down the line. The deepest part of the historic park is in left field as it’s 335 down the line and 398 to dead center field. The park should be a spectacle for NCCU Baseball for years to come.
