2011 Season Preview

In their first season as a full Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) program, North Carolina Central University will tackle a challenging 31-match slate against nine NCAA tournament teams (three Atlantic Sun, one Atlantic 10, four Big South, one Colonial Athletic Association, one PAC 10, three SoCon and one SWAC opponent), including 12 league matches. In her fifth season as the NCCU head women’s volleyball coach, Georgette Crawford-Crooks releases the 2011 volleyball schedule on Friday, June 29.

“As we continue to strive for Division I excellence, our schedule has to remain competitive and challenging,” said Crawford-Crooks. NCCU begins the season with three consecutive tournaments, beginning with the fifth annual NCCU Hilton/RTP Invitational on Aug. 26-27 in the McDougaldMcLendon Gym. The mighty maroon and gray will host volleyball programs from Campbell, Elon and Florida Gulf Coast.

The Eagles will travel to the nation’s capital for their first appearance at the Georgetown Tournament on Sept. 2-3 in Washington, D.C. NCCU will face Central Connecticut on Sept. 2, and George Washington and UNC Wilmington on Sept. 3. The maroon and gray will hit the road for their third tournament hosted by Elon (N.C.), on Sept. 16-17. NCCU will open the weekend with its match against Winthrop on Sept. 16, and conclude the weekend with Elon and Campbell on Sept. 17.

NCCU begins head-to-head home competition against UNC Asheville on Sept. 20 in McDougald-McLendon Gym. The first official MEAC home game is set for Sept. 23, against mega rival North Carolina A&T State. The mighty maroon defeated the Lady Aggies during both matchups of the 2010 campaign. The Eagles continue their first home stand with Radford on Sept. 27.

Spending the next two weeks on the road, NCCU will participate in the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Tournament in Princess Anne, Md., on Sept. 30-Oct. 1. The Eagles will challenge Hampton and Cal State Bakersfield on Sept. 30 and conclude with UMES and Alabama State on Oct. 1. Continuing its road trip, NCCU will travel to Greensboro, N.C., to face the Spartans of UNC Greensboro on Oct. 4. The Eagles conclude their road stint with weekend play against MEAC Florida foes, Florida A&M (Oct. 7) and Bethune-Cookman (Oct. 8). In a three-game home slate, the Eagles will face new MEAC member Savannah State on Oct. 14. NCCU then welcomes South Carolina State to McDougald-McLendon Gym on Oct. 16 and concludes the home slate with SoCon foe Davidson (Oct. 18). Before another three-game home stand, the maroon and gray venture down interstate 85 to battle North Carolina A&T State on Oct. 30. For their final home slate of the season, the Eagles welcome Atlantic Sun opponent USC Upstate on Nov. 2, followed by MEAC foes Bethune-Cookman (Nov. 4) and Florida A&M (Nov. 6).

NCCU will conclude the season with a southern road trip beginning with a match against High Point on Nov. 8. The squad then ventures to the Palmetto State to face South Carolina State (Nov. 11) and concludes the regular season in Georgia to battle Savannah State (Nov. 13).

For the first time since 2006, the mighty maroon and gray will contest for a conference championship on Nov. 18-20 during the 2011 MEAC Championship.

“The key to our success this season will be our ability to play as a team and our leadership on the court,” said Crawford-Crooks. LEADERSHIP

SETTERS

Ensuring the offense flows efficiently will be the job of Kalao, who finished the 2010 season with 948 assists.

“After a solid year under her belt, Jackie (Jzima-Malaki) has a better understanding of her role and what I expect from her as a leader on the court,” said Crawford-Crooks. “When she returns in the fall, I know she will be ready to get to work.” RIGHT SIDE

outside hitter Shantel Moore and sophomore setter JzimaMalaki Kalao. Moore, who ended the 2010 campaign early due to injury, will be key to filling the vacancy left by senior Belinda Behncke-Biney. “Due to Shantel’s injury, she spent a great deal of time on the sidelines,” Crawford-Crooks said. “Given that vantage point, Shantel has seen and understands the needs of the team from all angles, making her a smarter element of the program.” NEWCOMERS

The 2011 class consists of a talented, driven and eager trio: Malessa Clary (Southfield, Va.), Dyana Arrufat (Miami Beach, Fla.) and JaNae Raynor (Colorado Springs, Colo.). “I believe that my newcomers will make a significant impact,” said Crawford-Crooks. “They all have a strong desire to learn and play in their first year. I believe that they have the work ethic to accomplish those goals, while making an impact from day one.”

Rotating back to the right side for the Eagles is Moore. While she ended the 2010 campaign after only playing seven matches, this season the senior will return as the primary offensive threat. Moore will primarily play on the right side, but she will have outside hitting responsibilities as well. MIDDLE HITTERS

The middle hitting position comes in with the most depth, with three student-athletes. Russell, who will have duties on the right side, will find the core of her responsibility as a middle hitter. “Kalin is an all around player with the passion to win,” Crawford-Crooks said. “Her presence on the court makes her an option on the right side and in the middle, which

OUTSIDE HITTERS

Senior Martisann Sinclair will anchor the outside hitters. Sinclair finished the 2010 season with 414 kills (behind Behncke-Biney) and 199 points (behind Sashalee Wallen). “Martisann has matured over the course of four years,” said Crawford-Crooks. “She knows that this season is about coming in and doing her job, and doing it well.” Joining Sinclair on the left side will be Arrufat. “Dayana will bring height and fundamental strength

we will utilize every time we step on the court.” In her final season as an Eagle, Tasha-Gaye Richards returns to the middle position as the second strongest solo blocker with 10 blocks during the 2010 season and third in blocking assists with 50.

Santos, who is listed as a utility student-athlete, will show her versatility and athleticism as a defensive specialist this season.

“Malissa wants to learn and grow,” said Crawford-Crooks. “When she approached me about joining the program, she conveyed a sense of passion and determination that will great for our program.”

CONCLUSION

Newcomer Clary is expected to make a significant influence immediately even though she is a walk-on, as her height and agility will be extremely effective.

DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS

With senior Emanuelle Santos and sophomore Raynor anchoring the defensive specialists’ position, the Eagles should find ease in fueling their offense.

“With JaNae joining the defensive specialists, we will see a lot of competition in practice and on game day,” said Crawford-Crooks. “With all three of my defensive players possessing such strong competitive spirits, our defensive leadership will another key to our success.” With NCCU settled into their MEAC home, the Eagles will strive for excellence in conference and post-season play. The mighty maroon will demonstrate that ‘winning is habit, but success is a choice’.

Head Coach • 6th Season

California (Pa.) • 1994

Georgette Crawford-Crooks came to North Carolina Central University as head volleyball coach in 2006 after spending two years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State University.

third consecutive year.

In her first season as head coach, the Eagles posted an overall record of 32-13 (the most victories in school history), including a 14-0 record in CIAA play. NCCU also won the CIAA Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championship for the

Crawford-Crooks inherited the two-time defending CIAA champions, but only returned four letterwinners and one starter from the previous season. Still, the Eagles extended their CIAA winning streak to 41 straight contests and won two tournaments in which NCCU was the lone NCAA Division II representative (the Hampton University Lady Pirate Invitational and the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams Invitational). Under the guidance of Crawford-Crooks, six Eagles received post-season women’s volleyball honors, including junior outside hitter Shari Matthews as the CIAA Player of the Year and the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year. For her efforts, Crawford-Crooks was voted as the 2006 CIAA Women’s Volleyball Coach of the Year.

In 2007, her second season at NCCU and the program’s first season as a Division I competitor, the Eagles posted a 21-13 overall record, against an entire Division I schedule. On August 24, 2007, the first day of Division I athletic competition for NCCU, the honor of opening the Eagles’ Division I era went to the women’s volleyball team. The Eagles swept Norfolk State in the first match of the day, and then in the nightcap against ACC opponent N.C. State, the Eagles found themselves behind two games to none, but rallied for a 3-2 victory. Crawford-Crooks joined NCCU with a total of 11 years of coaching experience to the job, including four years as the head coach at High Point

2010 Season Review One Heart

The 2010 season was set on the mindset of ONE HEART with the NCCU Eagles official Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference members and in their final year of the Division I transition. For the mighty maroon, becoming an official MEAC member means a returning to a conference that the Eagle family founded 41 years ago in 1970.

Over the past four years, the women’s volleyball program has faced some extreme challenges and taken some bumps and bruises to build the foundation for a future nationally recognized program. The maroon and gray faced some of the most difficult competition, battling volleyball squads from Texas- El Paso, Duke and #12 Minnesota. NCCU concluded the season with a record of 9-25, with the same number of wins from the 2009 season, but with two additional losses. NCCU participated in five tournaments during the 2010 campaign along with a complete MEAC competition schedule. Former student-athlete Belinda Behncke-Biney and sophomore Jzima-Malaki Kalao represented the Eagles on five all-tournament team lists during those tournaments. The 2010 Eagles’ offense was paced by Behncke-Biney, the outside hitter finished the season with 414 kills and completed her career with 1154 kills. Behncke-Biney also led the squad in services with her sharp jump float at 47 service aces on the season. In her freshman campaign, Kalao distributed 948 assists to average 7.83 assists per set.

Defensively, Raven King and former student-athlete Sashalee Wallen commanded the digging and blocking effort. King collected 330 digs during the 2010 season, while Wallen collected 111 total blocks (18 solo and 93 assists). The mighty maroon concluded the season with 1174 kills, 1050 assists, 162 services aces, 1285 digs, 48 solo blocks and 366 block assists. BEHNCKE-BINEY, KALAO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM HONORS North Carolina Central University student-athletes Belinda Behncke-Biney and Jzima-Malaki Kalao

CHARLIE NELMS

Chancellor • 7th Year Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Chancellor Charlie Nelms assumed his duties as chancellor of North Carolina Central University August 1, 2007. Prior to joining the NCCU family, Nelms served as vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs at Indiana University, which enrolls approximately 100,000 students on eight campuses. In his role as IU’s vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs, Nelms was responsible for a combination of duties on the Bloomington campus and systemwide that spanned university planning, institutional research and effectiveness, enrollment management, student affairs, academic support services, K-12 outreach initiatives, student retention, honors programs, and diversity and equity efforts. In September 2001, TIME magazine named IU’s Bloomington campus the number-one student-centered research university in the nation. Many of the programs cited by TIME were under Nelms’ oversight and direction. A native of Crawfordsville, Arkansas, Nelms majored in agronomy and chemistry at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, graduating in 1968. He later earned a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs (1971) and a doctoral degree in higher education administration (1977) from Indiana University. Early in his career, he rose through the faculty and administrative ranks as associate dean for Student Development at Earlham College in Indiana (1973-1977), associate director of the Center for Human Development and Education Services at the UAPB (1977-1978), associate dean for Academic Affairs at Indiana University Northwest (1978-1984) and vice president for Student Services at Sinclair Community College in Ohio (1984- 1987). In 1987, Nelms began a seven-year tenure as chancellor of Indiana University East, a commuter campus serving east-central Indiana. During his tenure there, the campus was the fastest-growing college in the State of Indiana. In 1994, Nelms was named chancellor of the University of Michigan at Flint (UMF), an urban campus that enrolls over 6,500 students and offers a full spectrum of undergraduate and master’s degree programs. Before being recruited to Indiana University in 1998, he resolved a significant campus budget deficit, reversed a four-year enrollment decline, and secured more than $75 million in private gifts to UMF. A former American Council on Education Fellow and Ford Fellow, Nelms holds honorary degrees from Earlham College and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to education and service to students, including the Benjamin Hooks Award for Meritorious Achievement from the Gary (IN) branch of the NAACP, the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from Indiana University, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the IU School of Education, the President’s Medal from the University of Michigan, and the State of Indiana’s Sagamore of the Wabash—the highest civilian award bestowed by the governor. Nelms is married to Jeanetta Sherrod Nelms. They have one son, Rashad, a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School who serves as a policy officer with the United Nations World Food Programme.

Athletics Director • 6th Year George Washington

Ingrid Wicker-McCree, Ed.D., was appointed as the Director of Athletics at North Carolina Central University on April 23, 2008 after holding the interim position for five months. She officially began her new leadership role on May 1, 2008.

Wicker-McCree, who joined the rank of only a handful of women athletic directors in the UNC system, previously served as NCCU’s associate athletics director for internal affairs. She has served in a variety of leadership positions in both conference and national level organizations, most notably as president of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Executive Board from 2004-06, becoming only the second woman to ever hold that position in the league’s history. In addition, she served as a member of the NCAA’s Division II Legislation Committee from 2003-07. In recognition of her work, Wicker-McCree received the CIAA Leadership Award for Service as president of the Executive Board and was named the CIAA Senior Woman Administrator of the Year in the spring of 2006.

Now entering her 16th year at NCCU, Wicker-McCree has been one of the driving forces behind NCCU’s reclassification to NCAA Division I. Since 1998, she has overseen the internal operations of the Athletics Department, including all compliance and eligibility programs.

Wicker-McCree began her career at NCCU as the head coach for women’s volleyball and softball. She became the first coach in NCCU history to win conference championships in multiple sports, capturing the school’s first-ever CIAA titles in softball (1998) and volleyball (1999, 2004, 2005). A three-time CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year (1999, 2002, 2005) and former member of the NCAA Division II National Volleyball Committee, Wicker-McCree earned 239 match victories in 12 seasons as head volleyball coach at NCCU. She was also inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 as head coach of the 1998 softball team. A native of Durham and a graduate of C.E. Jordan High School, Wicker-McCree played on two North Carolina high school state volleyball championship teams, while also lettering in basketball and track and field. She continued her volleyball playing career as a student-athlete at George Washington University. Wicker-McCree earned her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from George Washington University in 1989, and a master’s degree in recreation resources administration from North Carolina State University in December 1991. She also completed doctoral studies in higher education administration at North Carolina State University in June 2008. She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s volleyball program at N.C. State (1989-90). She then spent two seasons (1992-93) as head volleyball coach and student-athlete academic counselor at North Carolina A&T State University before returning to her hometown to begin her NCCU tenure in August 1994. Wicker-McCree has been involved as a player and coach in the USA Volleyball Carolina Region. She also served as director of three USAV Junior Olympic Teams (ages 18, 16, 14 and under) and director of the Y.M.C.A. Middle School Girls’ Volleyball Camp (ages 10-14).

Wicker-McCree and her husband, Geno McCree, a three-sport collegiate student-athlete and 1991 graduate of Elon University, are the proud parents of Alexia, Quinton and Sydney.

During the university’s membership in the CIAA and MEAC, teams won 41 conference championships, made 21 NCAA regional appearances, won three NCAA regional titles, and earned two team national championships (1989 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball and 1972 NAIA Men’s Outdoor Track & Field). More than 55 student-athletes have captured individual NCAA and NAIA national championships. That level of success extended to the international stage. Student-athletes represented NCCU in six consecutive Olympic Games from 1956-76 in the sport of track & field. During that time, the individuals captured eight Olympic medals, including five gold medals.

North Carolina Central University boasts a rich tradition in athletic competition, dating back to the same academic year the University opened its doors for the first time. The first organized sports team at what was then the National Training School and Chautauqua was baseball, fielding a squad in the spring of 1911. Since that time, Eagle student-athletes have competed in sports such as boxing, wrestling and swimming, in addition to the sports currently offered by NCCU: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and women’s volleyball. HELP THE EAGLES WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS

“Winning” for the Eagles is more than outscoring the opponent, it is excelling in the classroom, actively participating in community service projects and adhering to NCAA rules regarding recruitment and admission of student-athletes. How can you help the Eagles win? Follow the NCAA rules.

The NCAA defines an institution as the University, its employees, its student-athletes, and its representatives of athletics interests, including parents, alumnus and fans. Therefore beware of the following: NCAA BYLAW 13.1.2.1

In Division I, representatives of an institution’s athletics interests are prohibited from making in-person, on- or offcampus recruiting contacts, including written and/or telephonic communications with a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians.

A prospect is defined as any student who has started classes for the ninth grade, whether the student participates in athletics is not relevant to the classification as a prospect and neither is gender. Written or telephonic communications includes email, instant messaging, paging, video conferencing, faxing and text messaging. NCAA Bylaw 16.02.3

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Unless you are willing to give a benefit to all 8,000 students at NCCU, don’t give it to a student-athlete or a prospect.
