Season Preview

Under the direction of first-year head coach Theresa Stephens, the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University launch the 2012 campaign with a doubleheader against the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington on Friday, Feb. 10 in Wilmington, N.C., and a two-day appearance at the Elon Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11-12 at Elon in Elon, N.C.

Stephens, who begins her collegiate Division I head coaching career at NCCU, will guide 16 Lady Eagles into diamond battle this weekend. The pyramid of Stephens coaching philosophy is “energy, passion and swagger.”

“Energy is one of the staples of this program this season,” said Stephens. “Getting them fired up to play with purpose will guide us to success. As we rediscover the love and desire for this sport, the energy will return rapidly. “I also want to instill that ‘swagger’ a confidant, not cocky, player should possess. And finally, I want to reignite the level of passion for softball, through my own deep passion and enthusiasm.”

Alongside Stephens will be first-year assistant coach Alyssa Ishibashi who enters the coaching realm after a stellar career at North Carolina State University. The 16 young women in maroon and gray consist of 10 returners and six newcomers, with two of the Lady Eagle newcomers being junior transfers.

PITCHERS NCCU enters the 2012 season with another threewoman pitching workforce consisting of two returners and one new Lady Eagle: senior Aurora Baker, junior Kayla McPeek and junior transfer Bianka Molina. McPeek returners as the standout pitcher during her sophomore year, as she led the pitching regime with a 5.92 ERA with 112.1 innings pitched. She finished the season with four of the six pitching wins and led the team in strikeouts with 32 in the course of 28 games with 18 starts.

“McPeek is one of our top returning pitchers,” said Stephens. “As she bounces back from a minor wrist injury, she has become more focused of the movement of the ball and getting stronger.” Baker appeared in 13 games and seven starts during the 2011 campaign. In her second year as a Lady Eagle, she was second among the pitchers with 7.94 ERA in 52.0 innings.

“Baker is back for her last season and I’m very excited about watching her continue to grow throughout this season,” said Stephens. “She has grown up so much in the circle.”

Molina, who is a transfer from De Anza College, will be a solid addition to the pitching staff. As a high school student-athlete, she led her team to a 15-12 overall record and an 8-6 league record in her senior year. “Molina is one of the easiest pitchers I’ve ever worked

with,” said Stephens. “She is another player that leads by her performance on the field. She is a very quiet player and does not let much phase her at all in the circle.” CATCHERS There will be two familiar faces behind the plate and one new student-athlete in maroon and gray. With four years of experience and the primary catcher for Lady Eagles will be senior Andrea Searls, followed by sophomore Amanda Bullock and newcomer Sarah Kaiser.

Searls enters her final year in maroon and gray following a strong outing in 2011, where she appeared in 35 games with 35 starts. For the second consecutive season, the catcher was second in slugging percentage at .313 with 11 runs, 27 hits and eight RBI on 99 times at bat. From the field Searls is fifth in at 92.1 percent with 101 putouts, 27 assists and 139 chances, while catching 13 opponents stealing bases on 52 attempts. “I am very blessed that I am getting at least one year with this young lady,” said Stephens. “She is probably one of our smartest players and is turning out to be one of the most devastating hitters we have. She has a great eye for the ball, has a sense of determination and does not like to be defeated.” Bullock, who was last season’s primary first baseman, will see some action from behind the plate as well. In her freshman season, Bullock appeared and started in all 37 contests during the 2011 campaign. She was fourth on the team in batting average with a .250 after going 24-for-96 and led the team in fielding at 97 percent with 186 putouts, nine assists and seven errors.

“Bullock is another promising hitter for us this year,” said Stephens. “She brings a great deal of power to the plate. Bullock will be seeing time this season in the catching, designate player and first base roles.” Kaiser also hails from De Anza College. The junior transfer attended Saint Frances High School where the team concluded her senior year with 10 wins and 16 loses overall and 6 wins and five losses in league play during the 2007-08 campaign. “Kaiser will bring performance leadership to this

season’s is team,” said Stephens. “In other words, her work on the field will lead the squad and maintain the high level of play we will bring to the game. She loves to hit and brings focus and experience to the plate and in the field.” INFIELD Inside NCCU’s diamond will be full of fresh faces, as Stephens returns three Lady Eagles while welcoming four to the maroon and gray nation. Bullock will return to her duties at first base, while Regina Diaz returns to her duties at middle infield and Shamekia Edwards returns to action after taking a hiatus during the 2011 season. Infield newcomers include Martha Batie, Tiphani Jackson, Kaiser and Ariel Lanier. Diaz, who had an outstanding freshman year with 36 starts in 36 contests attained a .170 batting average after going 14-of-88 and scoring 10 runs with 10 RBI and one double. She was a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen bases, as well as a .871 fielding percentage with 46 putouts, 76 assists and 18 errors.

“Diaz is the voice to this team and you will always hear her on the field,” said Stephens. “She has shown the most improvements among her class. Diaz brings that mental strength to the game that every coach appreciates.”

Edwards competed during the 2010 campaign. “Edwards is back and better than ever,” said Stephens. “She brings defensive strength and power at the plate. She has the unique ability to come through in the clutch by moving runners and getting them in.”

Batie enters the nest from Susquehanna Township High School, where she was named all-conference three times from 2009-2011. In her debut as an Eagle, the Harrisburg, Pa., native will be vital to the success of third base and middle infield. “Batie brings the team a little more speed and talent,” said Stephens.

Jackson begins her collegiate career after playing high school softball at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bowie, Md. “Jackson will be that freshman who will be seeing quite

a few starting rolls this season between second and first base,” said Stephens. “She has stepped up to the challenges we have presented to her and is starting to blossom into one of those key players offensively and defensively.”

Lanier of Mableton, Ga., will bring a double dynamic of academic strength and athleticism. As she commences her career as a Lady Eagle, Lanier is coming off the Defensive Player of the Year award, Highest G.P.A. Award with a 4.3 average on a 4.0 scale and an appearance at the state playoffs. OUTFIELD The outfield will have the most experienced depth this season, with four returners commanding the grass: Cember Carmichael, Mae’Risha Watts, Nadia Moreta and Nadia Jefferies. Carmichael returns to the diamond following a stellar freshman year. She appeared in 37 games for NCCU, where she started in all 37, and was first on the team in batting average with .393 on a 25-of-89 effort. Carmichael was the lone Eagle to obtain homeruns with two, as she notched four doubles and one triple and attained a team-high 18 RBI. She also notched a .891 fielding percentage with 39 putouts, two assists and five errors.

“Carmichael is the returner to look out for and one of our top hitters returning,” said Stephens. “Not only has Carmichael worked hard to become a stronger mental game hitter, she has also improved her defensive game.”

Watts will return to the grass for the 2012 campaign, after advancing her playing time in 2011 to 37 contests on 36 starts as the starting center fielder. Watts accomplished a .838 fielding percentage with 53 putouts and four assists on 68 chances. “Watts has truly stepped it up defensively and offensively and has taken the time to focus on creating an offensive balance,” said Stephens.

Moreta enters her fourth and final year as a Lady Eagle outfielder. During last season’s campaign Moreta recorded a .879 fielding percentage with 26 putouts

and 61 assists on 99 chances as a third baseman.

“Moreta is also back for her last season as our right fielder and potential pinch hitter,” said Stephens.

Jefferies looks to continue her stellar effort from last season, where she played and started in 29 contests of the 2011 season. She enters her junior season as the third slugging leader at 29.6 percent with 15 runs and 23 hits on 81 times at bat. The right fielder tallied 19 assists on 77 chances with 48 putouts for 87.0 percent from the field, on top of seizing her best outing in a 1-0 victory over Saint Paul’s College with three runs, two hits and one RBI on three times at bat. “Jefferies will definitely be running the bags more this year,” said Stephens. “She not only brings speed, she has also improved on her left side shortcake and as a result she has turned into a stronger utility player.” CONCLUSION The 2012 softball season will be a year of nuisances, the season that Stephens plans to “take the MidEastern Athletic Conference by storm.”

SCHEDULE The 2012 North Carolina Central University softball season will be full of many nuances as first-year head softball coach Theresa Stephens announces the 2012 competition schedule on a new playing field on Friday, Dec. 16. In its first year as a full Division I and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference competitor, NCCU, which is competing as a southern division squad, will battle eight conference foes, host 12 competitions, venture to nine Division I institutions and take part in four tournaments.

This season, the Lady Eagles will welcome 12 competitors to a new diamond. Piney Wood Park, which is located 4.6 miles away from campus, will be the new home of the Lady Eagles.

“Our schedule should be a perfect schedule for our student-athletes this season,” said Stephens. “It is not overly dominating, but competitive enough for us to compete. Our schedule will allow us to grow and

improve every time we hit the field.”

The Lady Eagles open the season with Colonial Athletic Association opponent UNC-Wilmington on Friday, Feb. 10 in Wilmington, N.C., for a doubleheader slated for 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. For the first tournament of the season, NCCU will head to Burlington, N.C., for the Elon University Invitational to knock bats with the Elon Phoenix and the Hoyas of Georgetown from Saturday, Feb. 11 to Sunday, Feb. 12. The mighty maroon opens at home with a doubleheader against MEAC foe Norfolk State on Thursday, Feb. 16. The Spartans will be the first opponents to venture to the Lady Eagles new home at Piney Wood Park. NCCU continues its three-game homestand with SoCon members Appalachian State on Saturday, Feb. 18 and concluded with Campbell on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

First-year assistant coach Alyssa Ishibashi, who is an alum of the Wolfpack nation and a former softball student-athlete, will assist in directing the Lady Eagles to victory on Tuesday, Feb. 28 as they go up against N.C. State at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The first half of March will consist of three tournaments. NCCU travels to Spartanburg, S.C., for the three-day USC Upstate Tournament on March 2-4. The Palmetto State slugging feast will consist of competition between Lafayette, USC Upstate, Appalachian State, Dayton and NCCU. After a six-day competition break, the Lady Eagles fly north for the Longwood University Invitational in Farmville, Va., on March 10-11. The Division I Independent institution will welcome the mighty maroon and Binghamton.

On Tuesday, March 13, NCCU takes a break from tournament play to face the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. doubleheader in Clinton, S.C. For the last regular-season tournament of the season, the Lady Eagles takes on Drexel and Campbell during the two-day March 16-17 Campbell Invitational. NCCU returns to the Piney Wood Park nest for a four-

game home stand, for another matchup against USC Upstate the first game of the doubleheader is slated for 12:00 p.m. and concluded by a 2:00 p.m. contest. The Lady Eagles return to MEAC competition after a 32-day conference playing gap. On Tuesday, March 20, the mighty maroon welcomes the Hawks of Maryland Eastern for a doubleheader, the first pitch will be thrown at 4:00 p.m. The Aggies of N.C. A&T will spend two days in Durham for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 24 and a single game on Sunday, March 25 at 12:00 p.m.

“I see us doing well in conference play, we have the tools to do well and surprise a lot of teams,” said Stephens. NCCU will fly south for a weekend of play in Daytona Beach, Fla., to face the 2011 MEAC Champions Bethune-Cookman University on March 31 and April 1. On Wednesday, April 4, the Lady Eagles visit another southern foe, SoCon members and 2011 conference runner-ups the College of Charleston at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.

For the remainder of April, NCCU battles MEAC opponents, Savannah State on April 6-7 in Durham, N.C., South Carolina State on April 14-15 in Orangeburg, S.C. and Florida A&M on April 21-22 in Durham, N.C. The three MEAC competitions consist of three contests over two days, the first day of play will consist of a doubleheader and conclude with a singlegame on the last day of the matchup.

The regular-season concludes with doubleheader with Hampton at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. in Hampton, Va. For the first time since 2007, NCCU will be eligible for conference play. The top four teams from each division will compete for the 2012 conference title over three days of play in Ormond Beach, Fla., at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex. “We want to keep our goal in mind, ‘Take the MEAC by storm’, we worked all fall towards this goal and we are ready to compete for it,” said Stephens.

Theresa Stephens Head Coach / First Year Temple, 2003 / Phoenixville, Pa.

North Carolina Central University announced Theresa Stephens as its head softball coach on Monday, June 27. Stephens joins NCCU with more than eight years of coaching experience at the Division I, II and III levels, as well USA Softball and semiprofessional playing experience.

Prior to accepting the position at NCCU, Stephens was the top assistant softball coach at Campbell (Buies Creek, N.C.), primarily coaching and developing a pitching staff of five student-athletes. Preceding her three years at Campbell, Stephens was the assistant softball coach at UNC Pembroke (Pembroke, N.C.) during the 2007-08 year. As a member of the UNC Pembroke coaching staff, Stephens assisted the squad in setting or tying 33 school records in 2008, along with ending the year with an overall record of 46-15 and finishing 17-1 in the Peach Belt Conference.

“I will also bring passion to the program, through myself and the staff I surround the young ladies with,” Stephens said. – “When they see how passionate we are, how much we love the sport and how much we care, they will be drawn to that desire to want to succeed. Finally, I feel that I will display strong leadership qualities that anyone will be proud of and desire to follow. If I am a strong leader on and off the field, my student-athletes will emulate that same behavior on and off the diamond.”

“I am very excited about joining the Eagle family and I am very blessed to be given this opportunity to rebuild the program,” said Stephens. “Having the opportunity to coach against these young ladies during the past few years at Campbell University really did inspire me more to want to coach them and be a part of North Carolina Central University.”

Stephens obtained her first head coaching position at Meredith College, a Division III institution in Raleigh, N.C., where she spent two seasons(2005-07) leading the Avenging Angels. In all of her travels in North Carolina, Stephens attributes the beginning of her coaching career to Greensboro College, where she served as the assistant coach and an adaptive physical

“I am so very excited about Coach Stephens,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Ingrid Wicker-McCree. “With her background as a head coach and assistant coach on the Division III, II and I levels, she brings a wealth of knowledge about the game.” As Stephens looks to rebuild the program, there are three character traits she believes are key to success: energy, passion and leadership.

“Energy is one of the things I would like to bring to this program - getting them fired up and getting them to play with a purpose by helping them to remember why they play this sport,” said Stephens. “I want them to look forward everyday to practice and games, and I want them to build that swagger a confident player should have.

Stephens obtained her bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation with a concentration in behavioral health from Temple University (Philadelphia, Pa.) in 2003, after a two-year stint at South Carolina State University (Orangeburg, S.C.). The Phoenixville, Pa., native played softball at both institutions and was honored numerously for her pitching and utility abilities. While a sophomore

at SCSU in 1999, she was named an Onnidan AllAmerican. During her freshman year in 1998, Stephens was invited to the United States Olympic Team Trials.

After graduating from Temple, Stephens played in with a trio of women’s major class A fastpitch organizations, the New Jersey Majestics, Pennsylvania Royal Ladies and the Pennsylvania Haze over the course of four years. “Our softball program is headed in the right direction and Coach Stephens will be able to continue taking us to the next level in Division I,” said Wicker-McCree. “Our young women will definitely benefit from her experiences as a coach and a dynamic young woman.”

Alyssa Ishibashi Assistant Coach / First Year N.C. State, 2011 / Valencia, Calif.

North Carolina Central University announces Alyssa Ishibashi as the new assistant coach with the softball program on Friday, Sept. 30. Ishibashi joins the staff following a stellar career as a student-athlete at North Carolina State University. “My goal for student-athletes in this program is to develop them as players, while building their character, so they will be successful in life,” said Ishibashi. Ishibashi (pronounced EE-she-BAH-she) is in her first season as an assistant coach with the North Carolina Central University softball program. She joined the coaching ranks in early July, specifying in hitting and fielding areas of the program.

“She is a great fielder and hitter, the players are drawn to her personality and she breaks down information to them well,” said head NCCU softball coach Theresa Stephens. “She connects with the players on a good level and has great energy, that’s what the team needs.” A prospective December 2011 graduate of North Carolina State University, Ishibashi was also a vital member of the women’s softball program. As NCSU’s second baseman, Ishibashi played in an astounding 186 games in her career while amassing notable accolades, including the 2009 ACC All-Tournament team. During her senior season, Ishibashi played and started in 48 games while totaling a slugging percentage of .382. As a junior she tied for the team lead in sacrifice hits while also obtaining the second fewest strikeouts. Ishibashi’s sophomore season was

consistent as she lead the team in batting average (.282), hits (40), runs (17) and multiple-hit games (10). She hit .400 as a leadoff batter setting a new school record for being hit by a pitch 14 times. Ishibashi’s dedication and steadfastness was not only on the field, but coincided with her scholastic endeavors as well. Ishibashi received honors as a 2010 Scholar Athlete and the following 2011 school year as well. She also achieved the Dean’s List in 2011. “She brings a great deal of knowledge of the game to the players,” said Stephens. “She is a great mental game trainer and helps players understand their challenges and how to handle them.” Ishibashi is a native of Valencia, Calif., where she attended Valencia High School. Valley Breeze Gold was her summer league softball team where she also served as a Softball Camp Coach of the 18 and under ladies. In 2007, Ishibashi lead her Valencia High School softball team to the national championship as a senior hitting .381 with 37 hits and 15 RBIs in only 33 games. She finished the year hitting two clutch hits in the playoff and championship games, one being in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Head Athletic Trainer, M.S./ATC/LAT N.C. Central, 1995 / Rocky Mount, N.C. Sean Thomas enters his fourth year as head athletic trainer at North Carolina Central University.

Sean is no stranger to the university. He earned a bachelor’s degree (1995) in physical education and a master’s degree (1998) in physical education with a specialty in adaptive physical education at North Carolina Central. Prior to coming to NCCU, he was employed as head athletic trainer at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte (2003-2006), where he also taught some classes in physical education. In 1999, he joined the athletic training staff at Columbia University in New York as an assistant athletic trainer in charge of men’s

basketball, cross country, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and as an associate professor in physical education.

Thomas served as a graduate assistant at NCCU while completing his master’s degree, in charge of both basketball programs as well as volleyball. The winner of a Professional Football Athletic Trainers (PFAT) Scholarship, he worked for the Carolina Panthers during the 1996, 1999 and 2000 preseason camps. In the summer of 1997, Thomas was the head athletic trainer for the Durham Braves of the Coastal Plain Baseball League. Thomas is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and licensed by the State of North Carolina. He resides in Durham.

Charlie Nelms Chancellor / Fifth Year University of Arkansas Pine Bluff/ Crawfordsville, Ark.

Chancellor Charlie Nelms has led North Carolina Central University since 2007. During that time, despite a challenging b u d g e t climate, he has intensified the university’s emphasis on student success, setting ambitious goals for increasing student retention and graduation rates. These goals were given first priority in the strategic planning effort Nelms led to successful completion in 2010. In keeping with this priority, Nelms reorganized the University College to provide comprehensive advising and academic support services for all entering students and he instituted programs to improve the academic success of African-American males in particular. Nelms established a new vice chancellor for research and economic development to better manage the university’s growing research sector. In 2010 – 2011, university faculty received more than $25 million in sponsored research grants. This year, the university has embarked on the development of a Ph.D. program in integrated biosciences that is scheduled to enroll students in fall 2012. These will be the first doctoral students at NCCU since 1964.

Chancellor Nelms has dramatically improved the aesthetics and physical assets of the campus with the infusion of more than $75 million in new construction of a nursing building, residence hall and parking deck, and millions more in renovation of existing facilities. It was Nelms’ inspiration to move the historic Holy Cross Catholic Church across campus to its new location on Fayetteville Street alongside the new Centennial Garden. In 2011, Nelms published A Call to Action, a policy directive intended to spur a national dialogue

concerning the revitalization of the historically black colleges and universities as an important sector of American higher education.

Before coming to NCCU, Nelms served as vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs for the Indiana University system. He was also a chancellor twice before. In 1987, Nelms began a seven-year tenure as chancellor of Indiana University East, and in 1994 he was named chancellor of the University of Michigan at Flint (UMF). There, he resolved a significant campus budget deficit, reversed a four-year enrollment decline and secured more than $75 million in private gifts to UMF. Active in professional, civic, and higher education organizations, Nelms is past chair of the NCA Higher Learning Commission Board of Trustees and the National Advisory Board of the National Survey of Student Engagement. He also served as chair of the American Council on Education (ACE) Commission for Leadership Development and currently serves on ACE’s blue ribbon panel concerning accreditation. Nelms is a member of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation Board of Trustees and serves on the board of directors of the American Association of State Colleges & Universities.

Nelms is a native of Crawfordsville, Ark., and earned his undergraduate degree in agronomy and chemistry at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, graduating in 1968. He earned a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs in 1971 and a doctorate in higher education administration six years later from Indiana University. Early in his career, he taught and held administrative positions at Earlham College in Indiana, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Indiana University Northwest in Gary and Sinclair Community College in Ohio.

Ingrid WickerMcCree, Ed.D., was appointed as the Director of Athletics at North Carolina Central University on April 23, 2008 after holding the interim position

She officially began her new leadership role on May 1, 2008.

Wicker-McCree, who joined the rank of only a handful of women athletic directors in the UNC system, previously served as NCCU’s associate athletics director for internal affairs. She has served in a variety of leadership positions in both conference and national level organizations, most notably as president of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Executive Board from 2004-06, becoming only the second woman to ever hold that position in the league’s history. In addition, she served as a member of the NCAA’s Division II Legislation Committee from 2003-07.

championships in multiple sports, capturing the school’s first-ever CIAA titles in softball (1998) and volleyball (1999, 2004, 2005). A three-time CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year (1999, 2002, 2005) and former member of the NCAA Division II National Volleyball Committee, Wicker-McCree earned 239 match victories in 12 seasons as head volleyball coach at NCCU. She was also inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 as head coach of the 1998 softball team.

A native of Durham and a graduate of C.E. Jordan High School, Wicker-McCree played on two North Carolina high school state volleyball championship teams, while also lettering in basketball and track and field. She continued her volleyball playing career as a studentathlete at George Washington University. Wicker-McCree earned her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from George Washington University in 1989, and a master’s degree in recreation resources administration from North Carolina State University in December 1991. She also completed doctoral studies in higher education administration at North Carolina State University in June 2008.

In recognition of her work, Wicker-McCree received the CIAA Leadership Award for Service as president of the Executive Board and was named the CIAA Senior Woman Administrator of the Year in the spring of 2006.

She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s volleyball program at N.C. State (1989-90). She then spent two seasons (1992-93) as head volleyball coach and student-athlete academic counselor at North Carolina A&T State University before returning to her hometown to begin her NCCU tenure in August 1994.

Wicker-McCree began her career at NCCU as the head coach for women’s volleyball and softball. She became the first coach in NCCU history to win conference

Wicker-McCree and her husband, Geno McCree, a three-sport collegiate student-athlete and 1991 graduate of Elon University, are the proud parents of Alexia, Quinton and Sydney.

Now entering her 16th year at NCCU, Wicker-McCree has been one of the driving forces behind NCCU’s reclassification to NCAA Division I. Since 1998, she has overseen the internal operations of the Athletics Department, including all compliance and eligibility programs.

Wicker-McCree has been involved as a player and coach in the USA Volleyball Carolina Region. She also served as director of three USAV Junior Olympic Teams (ages 18, 16, 14 and under) and director of the Y.M.C.A. Middle School Girls’ Volleyball Camp (ages 10-14).

Etienne Thomas Associate Athletics Director / Fourth Year North Carolina Central University / Waterloo, Ia.

Etienne Thomas joined the North Carolina Central University staff as the Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and the Senior Woman’s Administrator in July of 2008.

Thomas came to NCCU from San Jose State University where she served as the director of compliance. She added the duties of associate athletics director in July 2006. As a sports supervisor in the Spartans’ 16-sports program, she oversaw men’s and women’s soccer and softball.

Thomas’ background is rooted in compliance. She has worked at Howard University (2002-03) in Washington, D.C., Saint Paul’s College (2001-02) in Lawrenceville, Va., and at North Carolina Central University (2001-02). Her first position in athletics was as a compliance/general administration intern in the University of Iowa women’s athletics department. The 1996 graduate of North Carolina Central University majored in political science. She has completed course work for a J.D. degree from The University of Iowa College of Law. Active in NCAA professional activities, she has served her universities as a delegate at the annual national convention. Thomas was an administrator at the 2004 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Conference. In 2006, she completed the 18-month NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program.

Thomas holds memberships in the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), the Black Coaches Association (BCA), the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), National Association of Athletics Compliance Coordinators (NAACC), and the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletes (N4A). Thomas, her husband Byron, her son Jermaine and her cousin Sydney Browne currently reside in Durham, N.C.

North Carolina Central University is competing in its first year as an NCAA Division I institution with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Fourteen men’s and women’s sports teams participate in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition at the Division I-FCS level. Men’s intercollegiate teams include football, basketball, baseball, indoor and outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and cross country. Women’s intercollegiate teams include basketball, volleyball, indoor and outdoor track & field, tennis, softball, bowling and cross country.

NCCU’s athletic programs have enjoyed regional and national recognition for years, headlined by the 1989 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship.

2006 CIAA WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONS

NCCU’s commitment to a balanced athletic program, providing equitable resources to all of its sports teams, is abundantly apparent. In five of the last eight years in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), NCCU claimed the Loretta Taylor All-Sports Trophy, recognizing the top all-around women’s program in the conference.

In 2007-08, NCCU’s first season of Division I (FCS) competition, the women’s volleyball team kicked off the Division I era with a dramatic, come-from-behind win over N.C. State, then cruised to 21 victories, all against Division I opponents. The football team finished its first Division I season with a 6-4 record, the Eagles fourth straight winning season. The men’s and women’s cross country teams each won four of their seven events. The men’s basketball team played one of the toughest schedules in the country, while traveling more than 22,000 miles and playing in 13 different states. The squad earned a road victory over the eventual Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) champions and capped the season with a win over rival Winston-Salem State University at the MEAC Tournament. Finally, the track and field program won two events at the prestigious Penn Relays and qualified two student-athletes for the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston. In 2006-07, NCCU’s final season in the NCAA Division II, the Eagles placed 24th in the final standings of the U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup, the prestigious award presented annually to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country. In 2006-07, NCCU won four CIAA team championships and participated in nine NCAA Division II Championship events.

Several former student-athletes and coaches are nationally and internationally known.

Heading the charge of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games was Dr. LeRoy T. Walker, President of the U.S. Olympic Committee, who lifted the Eagle track & field program to international prominence during his unprecedented tenure as head coach at NCCU. Under Walker’s reign, the Eagles produced 30 national titles, 77 All-Americans, and eight Olympic medalists. Legendary basketball practitioner, John B. McLendon, a member of the National Basketball Hall of Fame, established a remarkable record of 239-68 (.779) as an Eagle head coach from 1940 to 1952. A student of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of the game of basketball, McLendon is credited with the development of the zone press, fast break and four corners offense.

of-Famer, became the first black player to be drafted in the first round after scoring a record 1,745 points during his stellar NCCU career. Internationally-renowned artist, Ernie Barnes - best-known for his famous paintings seen on the 1970s sitcom “Good Times” - played football for the NCCU prior to a professional gridiron career with the Baltimore Colts, San Diego Chargers and Denver Broncos.

The LeRoy T. Walker Physical Education Complex houses a multi-purpose gymnasium, Olympic-sized swimming and diving pool, athletic training facilities, strength and fitness center, and much more. O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium hosts NCCU football action for a capacity crowd of 10,000 dedicated Eagle fans. In midNovember, McLendon-McDougald Gym lights-up with men’s and women’s basketball excitement.

The 1989 men’s basketball team won the NCAA Division II National Championship by defeating Southeast Missouri State 73-46 in the title game on March 25, 1989. The Eagles also captured an NCAA Division II Regional Championship in 1993.

How can you help the Eagles win? Follow the NCAA rules.

The NCAA defines an institution as the University, its employees, its student-athletes, and its representatives of athletics interests, including parents, alumnus and fans. Therefore beware of the following: NCAA BYLAW 13.1.2.1

In Division I, representatives of an institution’s athletics interests are prohibited from making in-person, on- or off-campus recruiting contacts, including written and/ or telephonic communications with a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardians. A prospect is defined as any student who has started classes for the ninth grade, whether the student participates in athletics is not relevant to the classification as a prospect and neither is gender.

An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interests to provide a studentathlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.

Unless you are willing to give a benefit to all 8,000 students at NCCU, don’t give it to a student-athlete or a prospect.
