2011 SEASON OUTLOOK The North Carolina Central University softball team enters its fourth year as a division one program and finally has a place to call home. After being accepted into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), July 1, 2010, NCCU will take on its first season as a new member to the league. Although the Lady Eagles will not be eligible to compete for a conference title until the 2012 season, NCCU will be given a chance to make a name for themselves in the MEAC during their 2011 campaign as they will be presented with a predominately conference filled schedule. Head coach Mike Charlton enters his fourth season with the Lady Eagles and senior Ashanti Stroud has been by his side since day one. Stroud will be coach Charlton’s first athlete to graduate from the program with four complete years under his guidance. Charlton and Stroud have both experienced the growth of the team together and this year will be a very exciting year for the both of them as the program continues to grow.

in age and numbers the Lady Eagles will continue to have great leadership which will help them build upon the foundation that has been started under Charlton’s guidance for the past four years. The Lady Eagles will be under a great group of guidance this season as their captains for the 2011 term has proven themselves to be a group full of heart and extremely hard workers. Ashanti Stroud will be joined her senior season with junior Andrea Searls and sophomore Mae’Risha Watts. This group of ladies has spent their time with NCCU softball completely dedicated to helping this young program grow and develop into something special. PITCHERS NCCU enters the 2011 season with a three-man pitching staff, all returners from last year’s squad, Aurora Baker, Kayla McPeek and Shamika Chavis-Hodge. Baker returns to the Lady Eagles with the most experience coming in as a junior. Last season Baker started in eight games finishing with a 1-8 record on the mound. She saw 59.1 innings of action, while leading the team in strike outs in 2010 with 22. Along with her experience, she also brings a lot of speed and strength to the mound which should help the Lady Eagles as they compete in the 2011 season. “Of course it will be a challenge going from a five-man pitching staff to three,” said Charlton. “Aurora wasn’t healthy the first half of last season, and that hurt us, so we are looking for a better show from her this season. We also have two sophomore pitchers returning with McPeek and Chavis-Hodge, so of course we will be looking for our younger pitchers to step up and Aurora to lead the way.”

Ashanti Stroud Alongside Stroud is senior returner Kristina Williams, who was also a part of coach Charlton’s very first class during the 2008 season. Under the leadership of two seniors, the Lady Eagles remain a youthful program, dominated by underclassmen. NCCU returns three juniors, four sophomores and welcomes four freshmen to its 2011 squad. Although they may be small

McPeek returns to the circle in 2011 as a sophomore. Last season McPeek was the wining pitcher in three out of NCCU’s seven wins, appearing in 74.1 innings. On the mound, her earned run average was 6.50 and she posted a total of 17 strike outs. McPeek, who is very versatile, also appeared at the plate for the Lady Eagles 30 times hitting .200 on the season. The versatility brought to the field by McPeek will be a huge asset on and off the mound throughout the Lady Eagles season. Chavis-Hodge rounds out the pitching crew for 2011 returning as a sophomore. She had a solid freshmen season with 11 appearances on the mound. After spending most of last season under great

as an outfielder. Last season Stroud played in 42 games for NCCU, while she hit .216. On the defensive end Stroud spent majority of her time in the outfield where she had 44 putouts with four assists and only four errors on the season. Stroud’s versatility, leadership and experience will bring a lot to the infield this season in helping them fill in the gaps they lost. Moreta, a returning junior, had a much improved season last year where she appeared in 23 games. She spent most of her time in the outfield for the past two years but will return to her natural in fielding position this season where she is expected to step up on the defensive and offensive end.

Aurora Baker upperclassmen guidance, Chavis-Hodge is expected to step up this season and be a powerful contributor for the Lady Eagles. CATCHERS The plate will be held down by a familiar face for the Lady Eagles, Andrea Searls. The junior has been the anchor for NCCU for the past two years as the primary catcher. Last season Searls played in 40 games and was named to the NCAA Division I Softball All-Independent Team. She hit .337 on the season, with six doubles and two triples. On the defensive end she had a total of 92 putouts with only 10 errors and 12 passed balls. “We have people that can back Andrea up,” Charlton added “but she has a very important roll on this team. She had some great achievements last year and now that she has become a more vocal leader we are looking for her to continue to anchor our team and lead us into our conference play next season.”

Williams returns to the Lady Eagles as a senior. In her 2008 freshmen campaign Williams also was mainly an outfielder but she returns to NCCU this season ready to work at any position that her team needs her. Stroud, Moreta and Williams will welcome newcomers Regina Diaz and Amanda Bullock to the infield. A freshmen class filled with infield talent is exactly what the Lady Eagles needed this season to help continue building their program. Diaz is one of Charlton’s North Carolina recruits coming from Lincolnton, N.C., where she attended North Gaston High School. Diaz came to NCCU as a natural third baseman but will be making the switch for the Lady Eagles over to shortstop where she will have to step up and become an immediate leader on the field. Bullock, another North Carolina native, rounds out the in fielding staff for the Lady Eagles this season. Bullock joins NCCU from Henderson, N.C., where she played at Northern

INFIELD The infield for the Lady Eagles will be drastically different from last season. All fresh faces will enter the rotation in the infield for NCCU. Returning for the Eagles will be senior Ashanti Stroud, a pervious outfielder, junior Nadia Moreta, another previous outfielder, along with the return of senior Kristina Williams who last lettered during the 2008 season. Stroud has been a key component for the past three years as a Lady Eagle but has spent the past two seasons predominantly

hit .250 on the season as the Lady Eagles lead-off batter, while coming up successful in 10 out of her 11 stolen base attempts. On the defensive end Jefferies had 74 putouts has she shared time as an infielder and outfielder. This season Jefferies speed and experience will help guide this young group of outfielders.

Nadia Moreta Vance High School. She is another young player for the Lady Eagles that will have to set up in a leadership position right away as she will take over the duties at first base. “Regina and Amanda will be very big players for our team this season,” said Charlton. “They are both coming in with big shoes to fill and I believe they will be able to get the job done very well.” OUTFIELD The 2011 outfield will have some key similarities to last season, as two players from last years squad will remain as outfielders, including one of this year’s captains Mae’Risha Watts. Returning with Watts will be fellow sophomore Nadia Jefferies; they welcome red shirt freshmen Whitney Boykin and freshmen Cember Carmichael to the green.

Boykin who is will a new face to the playing field is not new to the Lady Eagles program. She came in last season as freshmen who struggled with injuries and was not able to see the playing field. Boykin has worked extremely hard in the off season to get back healthy and prepare for her first season on the field. Her excitement for the game and eagerness to play will help inspire some of the younger girls to perform to their fullest potential. Carmichael comes to NCCU from Conyers, Ga., where she attended Spaulding High School. She is expected to be a huge impact player for the Lady Eagles immediately on the defensive and offensive end. Carmichael has been compared to the likes of former NCCU standout Desanbra Franklin and is going to be a great addition to the Lady Eagles program. “We are very excited about the outfield this season,” Charlton continued. “We have a lot of speed and intelligence in returners, and we also a lot of other players who can hold it down in the outfield if need be.” SCHEDULE This year the Lady Eagles will remain close to home for majority of their season as they begin to witness some conference play.

Watts returns to the outfield this season as last year’s most improved player. She joined the 2010 Lady Eagles team as a walk-on before making her way onto the starting line up and now has found a spot as one of the teams captains as a sophomore. Last year she hit .245 with 4 doubles, one triple and one homerun. On the defensive end she had 11 putouts in her time in the outfield. Watts’s hard work and dedication to the Lady Eagles softball program will be essential for the growth of this team. Jeffries also returns to the Lady Eagles this season as a sophomore. After a very impressive freshmen campaign, she will be looked at this season to lead her teammates in the outfield. In 2010 Jeffries posted some huge numbers despite just being freshmen. She

NCCU will be hosting two early tournaments to kick off their 2011 campaign before they start to get a taste of some MEAC play. “This season is what will give us an opportunity to see where we measure,” added Charlton. “It will be a trial run for the kids to see where we stand in the conference. We will be playing more in our division this year and get a chance to see how we compare, and what we need to continue to work on.” NCCU will also take a trip back up to coach Charlton’s home town of Dover, Del., as they participate in the Delaware State tournament in March. Also on the Lady Eagles schedule for this season will be five other major division one universities, giving them the chance to play at the highest level of competition.

Over the past few years as NCCU has gone through the transition from division two, to division one there has been one player that has stuck by coach Charlton’s side through it all. Stroud will graduate this spring as Charlton’s first full term athlete. “Ashanti has been here since day one,” noted Charlton. “It has been tough for her because of all the struggles we have been presented with as a program. This year will be very special to me because I get to see one of my kids make it, and how many changes have happened since she has been here.” Charlton also commented on what it to be like for him Stroud’s senior day

is going this May.

NCCU will be competing in a schedule similar to one that they will see next season as they are entered into the running for a conference title. This will give the Lady Eagles one last chance to work out all the kinks before they hit the main stage in 2012.

“It’s going be a great day because you always want to see one of your kids graduate,” he continued. “But it will also be sad because she has been here since day one and has helped me build this program. She will always be a part of our history here at NCCU.”

CONCLUSION This 2011 season for the Lady Eagles will definitely be one to remember, as the team is given one last chance to make a name for themselves in the division one pool. With a team filled with underclassmen, this season will be one that goes down in the history books for coach Charlton and his lone three time letter winning senior Ashanti Stroud.

Under the guidance of Charlton and his lone true senior Stroud, the very young Lady Eagles look to make great things happen in 2011 as they continue to close the gaps and look to become a true division one softball program.

Mike Charlton enters his fourth season as head softball coach at North Carolina Central University. Charlton first came to NCCU as the softball team’s assistant coach in 2002, serving in that capacity for two seasons under head coach Larry Keen. When baseball was reinstituted at NCCU for the 2006-2007 campaign, Charlton joined the Eagles’ baseball staff as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for one season before taking over the Lady Eagle Softball program in 2008. Prior to coming to NCCU, Charlton’s coaching experience included being the head baseball coach for the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics between 1998 and 2002. He also was the head wrestling coach for the same school between 2000 and 2007. Charlton is a 1997 graduate of the North Carolina State University, where he was a member of the Wolfpack football team and earned a bachelor’s degree in history. He resides in Raleigh with his wife and three daughters.

Barry Marrow enters his third season as an assistant coach with the North Carolina Central University softball program, where he assists with all day-to-day activities. Marrow is also responsible for all campus athletic facilities, serving as the coordinator for facilities and turf management. A native of Raleigh, N.C., Marrow attended Cary High School, where he was a member of the Imp football team. Following graduation, he spent two years at Merced College in Merced, Calif., where he was a member of the Blue Devil football team. After two years at Merced, he returned home, transferring to St. Augustineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s College in Raleigh. He spent two years at St. Augustineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s before entering the workforce. He and his wife Anglea have three children: Cameron, Ollie and Barry, Jr. They reside in Durham.

Sean Thomas enters his fourth year as head athletic trainer at North Carolina Central University.

Sean is no stranger to the university. He earned a bachelor's degree (1995) in physical education and a master's degree (1998) in physical education with a specialty in adaptive physical education at North Carolina Central.

The winner of a Professional Football Athletic Trainers (PFAT) Scholarship, he worked for the Carolina Panthers during the 1996, 1999 and 2000 preseason camps.

Prior to coming to NCCU, he was employed as head athletic trainer at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte (2003-2006), where he also taught some classes in physical education. In 1999, he joined the athletic training staff at Columbia University in New York as an assistant athletic trainer in charge of men's basketball, cross country, and men's and women's outdoor track and as an associate professor in physical education.

In the summer of 1997, Thomas was the head athletic trainer for the Durham Braves of the Coastal Plain Baseball League. Thomas is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and licensed by the State of North Carolina. He resides in Durham.

Chancellor Charlie Nelms assumed his duties as chancellor of North Carolina Central University August 1, 2007. Prior to joining the NCCU family, Nelms served as vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs at Indiana University, which enrolls approximately 100,000 students on eight campuses. In his role as IU’s vice president for Institutional Development and Student Affairs, Nelms was responsible for a combination of duties on the Bloomington campus and systemwide that spanned university planning, institutional research and effectiveness, enrollment management, student affairs, academic support services, K-12 outreach initiatives, student retention, honors programs, and diversity and equity efforts. In September 2001, TIME magazine named IU’s Bloomington campus the number-one student-centered research university in the nation. Many of the programs cited by TIME were under Nelms’ oversight and direction.

and service to students, including the Benjamin Hooks Award for Meritorious Achievement from the Gary (IN) branch of the NAACP, the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from Indiana University, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the IU School of Education, the President’s Medal from the University of Michigan, and the State of Indiana’s Sagamore of the Wabash—the highest civilian award bestowed by the governor. Nelms is married to Jeanetta Sherrod Nelms. They have one son, Rashad, a graduate of the University of Michigan Law School who serves as a policy officer with the United Nations World Food Programme.

A native of Crawfordsville, Arkansas, Nelms majored in agronomy and chemistry at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, graduating in 1968. He later earned a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs (1971) and a doctoral degree in higher education administration (1977) from Indiana University. Early in his career, he rose through the faculty and administrative ranks as associate dean for Student Development at Earlham College in Indiana (19731977), associate director of the Center for Human Development and Education Services at the UAPB (1977-1978), associate dean for Academic Affairs at Indiana University Northwest (1978-1984) and vice president for Student Services at Sinclair Community College in Ohio (1984- 1987). In 1987, Nelms began a seven-year tenure as chancellor of Indiana University East, a commuter campus serving east-central Indiana. During his tenure there, the campus was the fastest-growing college in the State of Indiana. In 1994, Nelms was named chancellor of the University of Michigan at Flint (UMF), an urban campus that enrolls over 6,500 students and offers a full spectrum of undergraduate and master’s degree programs. Before being recruited to Indiana University in 1998, he resolved a significant campus budget deficit, reversed a four-year enrollment decline, and secured more than $75 million in private gifts to UMF. A former American Council on Education Fellow and Ford Fellow, Nelms holds honorary degrees from Earlham College and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Ingrid Wicker-McCree, Ed.D., was appointed as the Director of Athletics at North Carolina Central University on April 23, 2008 after holding the interim position for five months. She officially began her new leadership role on May 1, 2008. Wicker-McCree, who joined the rank of only a handful of women athletic directors in the UNC system, previously served as NCCU’s associate athletics director for internal affairs. She has served in a variety of leadership positions in both conference and national level organizations, most notably as president of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Executive Board from 2004-06, becoming only the second woman to ever hold that position in the league’s history. In addition, she served as a member of the NCAA’s Division II Legislation Committee from 2003-07. In recognition of her work, Wicker-McCree received the CIAA Leadership Award for Service as president of the Executive Board and was named the CIAA Senior Woman Administrator of the Year in the spring of 2006. Now entering her 16th year at NCCU, Wicker-McCree has been one of the driving forces behind NCCU’s reclassification to NCAA Division I. Since 1998, she has overseen the internal operations of the Athletics Department, including all compliance and eligibility programs.

Wicker-McCree earned her undergraduate degree in criminal justice from George Washington University in 1989, and a master’s degree in recreation resources administration from North Carolina State University in December 1991. She also completed doctoral studies in higher education administration at North Carolina State University in June 2008. She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant coach for the women’s volleyball program at N.C. State (1989-90). She then spent two seasons (1992-93) as head volleyball coach and student-athlete academic counselor at North Carolina A&T State University before returning to her hometown to begin her NCCU tenure in August 1994. Wicker-McCree has been involved as a player and coach in the USA Volleyball Carolina Region. She also served as director of three USAV Junior Olympic Teams (ages 18, 16, 14 and under) and director of the Y.M.C.A. Middle School Girls’ Volleyball Camp (ages 10-14). Wicker-McCree and her husband, Geno McCree, a three-sport collegiate student-athlete and 1991 graduate of Elon University, are the proud parents of Alexia (11), Quinton (8) and Sydney (5).

Wicker-McCree began her career at NCCU as the head coach for women’s volleyball and softball. She became the first coach in NCCU history to win conference championships in multiple sports, capturing the school’s first-ever CIAA titles in softball (1998) and volleyball (1999, 2004, 2005). A three-time CIAA Volleyball Coach of the Year (1999, 2002, 2005) and former member of the NCAA Division II National Volleyball Committee, Wicker-McCree earned 239 match victories in 12 seasons as head volleyball coach at NCCU. She was also inducted into the NCCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004 as head coach of the 1998 softball team. A native of Durham and a graduate of C.E. Jordan High School, Wicker-McCree played on two North Carolina high school state volleyball championship teams, while also lettering in basketball

North Carolina Central University’s athletics programs have enjoyed regional and national recognition for years. Fourteen men’s and women’s sports teams participate in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition at the Division I level (Football Championship Subdivision) as members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The 1989 men’s basketball team won the NCAA Division II Men’s National Championship. Other men’s intercollegiate teams include football, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, baseball, golf and cross country. Women’s intercollegiate teams include basketball, volleyball, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, softball, bowling and cross country. Several former student-athletes and coaches are nationally and internationally known. Heading the charge of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games was Dr. LeRoy T. McLendon, a member of the National Basketball Hall of Fame, established a remarkable record of 239-68 (.779) as an Eagle head coach from 1940 to 1952. A student of the late Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, McLendon is credited with the development of the zone press, fast break and four corners offense. the summer of 2007, when the University began year one of its reclassification to NCAA Division I (Football Championship Subdivision) membership. On July 1, 2010, NCCU rejoined the MEAC as a provisional member. Teams and individual student-athletes have competed in national tournaments in several sports, including football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, softball and men’s tennis, winning national championships in men’s basketball and track and field. During the university’s membership in the CIAA and MEAC, teams won 41 conference championships, made 21 NCAA regional appearances, won three NCAA regional titles, and earned two team national championships (1989 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball and 1972 NAIA Men’s Outdoor Track & Field). More than 55 student-athletes have captured individual NCAA and NAIA national championships. That level of success extended to the international stage. Student-athletes represented NCCU in six consecutive Olympic Games from 1956-76 in the sport of track & field. During that time, the individuals captured eight Olympic medals, including five gold medals.

North Carolina Central University boasts a rich tradition in athletic competition, dating back to the same academic year the University opened its doors for the first time. The first organized sports team at what was then the National Training School and Chautauqua was baseball, fielding a squad in the spring of 1911. Since that time, Eagle student-athletes have competed in sports such as boxing, wrestling and swimming, in addition to the sports currently offered by NCCU: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s bowling, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, and women’s volleyball. NCCU joined the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (then named the Colored Intercollegiate Athletic Association) in 1928. In 1971, NCCU was one of the founding members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, established as an NCAA Division II conference. In 1980, NCCU returned to the CIAA, an NCAA Division II conference, when the MEAC opted to make the move to the NCAA Division I level of competition. Larry Black holds his two Olympic medals.
