The soil and sunshine of Humboldt County
yield the most sought-after cannabis anywhere. But it’s also the product of the people who tend it and the land it grows on, generation after generation. It’s not something you can set up overnight. In this issue, along with sharing sources for that fine local product, we’ll introduce you to some of the folks who raise and refine it, and the bonds that connect them to this place and each other.
Recent years in California have been marred by devastating wildfires. And like so many farmers, cannabis cultivators on the North Coast have faced the twin disasters of seeing the landscape and their livelihoods imperiled, and in some cases destroyed. In our story on the impact of recent fires, you’ll hear the experiences of local farmers and how they’re pulling together and planning ahead.
That’s not the only way small cultivators are coming together, either. We’ve got a forwardlooking story on cannabis co-ops and the nonprofit workers helping small operations come up with business models to help them compete against the corporate giants already moving in on the industry, and hopefully preserve the character and quality of Humboldt cannabis.
Restoration is on our minds, too. Recent grants distributed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife are being put to good use in our county and elsewhere in the Emerald Triangle to repair the damage done by illegal grows on public land and elsewhere. We’ll break down how the funds from taxed sales of legal cannabis are going toward healing the rivers, plants and fish of our watersheds that have been harmed by black market cannabis.
We’re also talking to Jeremy Kurtz of Humboldt Known, whose hemp-derived CBD water, supplements and gummies are not only popular with customers, but the cancer patients who receive them free in care packages. As always, we’ve also got a sampling of our favorite Humboldt products, zeroing in on the region's amazing extracts. And, of course, a packed listing of local cannabis producers you can browse by company and farm or by product to get your hands on the best our county and its cannabis community has to offer. — Jennifer Fumiko Cahill
