You’re Not From Around Here, Are You?

hat’s OK. Not all of us are. Sure, there are plenty of born-and-bred Humboldtians around, but this place has a way of luring in outsiders. When someone asks where you’re from, ask him or her the same. Some of us were drawn to the natural surroundings, the ancient forests and dramatic coasts. Others were called by outdoor sports — the fishing, kayaking and hiking they got tired of only doing on vacation. Plenty of us came for college and couldn’t quite say goodbye to the laid-back lifestyle. There are those who followed a beloved here and stayed up north long after the affair went south. And take heed — there are even a couple who visited for a long weekend and ended up buying a house. Really. We learn the ropes quickly enough, though. Some pointers: First, slow down. Time seems less pressing in a place with 2,000-year-old trees. Dress is casual. Outdoor wedding? Jeans. Clogs and sandals are always appropriate, and flannel is our black. Layer. Inland areas are hot and dry, the coast is cooler and everywhere can get chilly at night. Nobody carries an umbrella, even when it rains. Just put up your hood and run. Abandon your stereotypes. Our bikers eat panini, our professors hunt, our soccer moms are samba drummers and our entrepreneurs have dreadlocks.

There’s no smoking in downtown Arcata (regardless of what you might smell in the air). We love our pets, but keep your dog leashed on the beach because we love the seals and birds nestled in the dunes, too. Play it cool if you see a guy walking a turkey or a yak on the street. Now that you’re acclimated, let’s have some fun. In this summer issue of the Insider, you’ll find some places to cool off with a dip in a swimming hole, a fresh cocktail or a doublescoop of homemade gelato. We’ll help you plan your visit — and the next one — with custombuilt itineraries for adventurers, foodies, art lovers, sightseers and families with little ones. OUTSIDE MAN Don Banducci makes Humboldt his business

hese days Don Banducci describes himself as “primarily a hook and gun kinda guy.” Bluff and avuncular, with a penchant for offbeat jokes and a contagious, gravelly chuckle, it’s easy to imagine him By Linda Stansberry exchanging fish Photo by Chuck Johnson stories in front of a campfire or striding, rifle in hand, through a field accompanied by his pack of Springer spaniels. “I’m a hunter-gatherer-fisherman kind of guy,” he says. “I guess I kind of run counter to the general trend, which is non-consumptive. You know, taking pictures of birds rather than shooting them.” Running counter to the general trend describes the man well. But a life spent choosing the extraordinary over

the comfortable has been a successful one for Banducci, a Humboldt native who built a legacy around his love of this region’s wild places and natural beauty. Banducci’s roots in the area run deep. His paternal grandfather ran a store on the Arcata Plaza in the 1800s. His maternal grandfather owned a butcher shop in Eureka. His great aunt was a cook and a laundress in a lumber camp when construction was underway for what is now Highway 36. His parents, though both Humboldt natives, met in San Francisco, and the Banducci family spent summers in Redway, paddling rowboats and swimming in the Eel River. Banducci describes those summers as some of his most formative experiences. His love of the outdoors was instilled by the deep cool waters of the Eel, shaded

by stands of old growth redwood, where his uncle taught him to fly fish. Then one summer he returned to find the landscape changed dramatically. The woods had been logged. The redwoods were gone. “Seeing that, it had a profound effect on me.” Banducci was around 6 at the time. “I always remembered that.” In the fall of 1969, he started school at Humboldt State University, but found his attention drawn back again and again to the outdoors. He worked summers as a river raft and kayak guide in Idaho and Montana. He bounced from subject to subject at HSU — art history, English and forestry — but admits that he mostly stayed in school to avoid being drafted to go to Vietnam. If he’d had a choice, he says, he would have been outdoors Humboldt Insider

instead of in academia. Banducci and the woman who would become his first wife, Maggie Kerwin, spent several months travelling through South America after college, river running in Chile, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. In 1979 they acquired Yakima, an innovative roof-rack company that was born, Banducci says, “out of a love of kayaking.” At the time, he and his bride were living in a treehouse above the Rogue River, but they decided to move the company to Arcata. The manufacturing and small business sector in the region was limited at the time, with most of the local economy reliant on timber and fishing. “I wanted to show people you didn’t have to cut down trees or net vast amounts of fish to make a profit.” Other small, local businesses such as Holly Yashi jewelry and kayak equipment company Kokatat were also getting their start back then. Yakima and Banducci rose to success at the same time as the infamous Timber Wars, when the county was torn between environmental activists and logging traditionalists. Banducci, a prominent local businessman, found himself at the center of the controversy. He describes himself as “wanting to bridge the gap” between the two sides. That childhood experience of finding a place he loved degraded by clearcuts, swaths of forest where only stumps are left, informed his voice and passion as a spokesperson for both the forest and the rural lifestyle. Since selling Yakima and retiring in 1997, Banducci has devoted himself to side projects that put his multiple enthusiasms to good use. He brands himself to businesses as a “marketing insultant,” Summer 2014

and considers his brash manner a useful tool in a world he describes as increasingly oversensitive. He’s also working on a novel set in Southern Humboldt and he’s written scripts for several Humboldt tourism videos. “The off season here gets a short shrift,” he says, referring to the fall, winter and spring months known for torrential rains, “We have a lot of great attractions: fine dining, great festivals, art galleries, steelhead fishing season.” Banducci can be observed taking advantage of Humboldt County’s natural splendor in all seasons, usually accompanied by his pack of spaniels. The mention of the dogs brings a soft glint into his eye. He and Roxanne, his wife of seven years, are expecting a litter of puppies from one. “They’re so much work and so much fun,” he says, adding that Humboldt is a uniquely dogfriendly place. He and the pack often romp across the Samoa dunes and other open beaches. Other times of the year will find Banducci on the waters of the Eel, the Smith or Trinity River, enjoying his new drift boat. He especially loves the Klamath in the fall when the canyon is turning colors. One of his enthusiasms is exposing newcomers to the wild places he loves. There are a thousand small sandbars along the river to camp overnight, secret fishing spots and places to sit and watch the storm roll in. Don Banducci knows them all. It’s hard to talk to him and not feel inspired to throw your things in a backpack, grab a tent and head off to Stone Lagoon or Agate Beach. Don’t be surprised to see a familiar, slope shouldered figure already there, a pack of spaniels at his feet.

Backyard In Humboldt Bay, stories lurk within the rusting beaters and gleaming glories

ody Hills leans back in the stern of the small boat owned by Humboldt Baykeeper, which is zipping north through the Eureka channel of Humboldt Bay. He looks as relaxed as if he were reclining on his living-room couch. Around him the water crinkles and winks, like smoothed-out foil gift wrap. Two frothy white tracks stretch parallel behind the moving boat, creStory by Heidi Walters ating a broad path back in time. Beyond the wake sits the Schneider Photos by Drew Hyland Dock, which knew the bay when it was a working man’s paradise, full of mills and ships and fishing boats, even whalers, and ferries. The work has dwindled — there are mostly fishing boats now — but stories linger out here, sealed in the grain of old wooden boats, in the iron cells of former war ships like the World War II Navy landing craft Ten Ninety-One, now a civilian museum ship docked north of the Schneider dock at Waterfront Drive and Commercial Street, and even in some of the more modern boats. There are boats in this bay that look like old beaters, ready for retirement in some quiet, forgetting cove. And others, seemingly in good shape, that never leave port. There are nameless boats. There’s “Admiral” Jim Blum’s 1965, 49-foot, lovingly-oiled wooden crab and tuna boat, the Tempest. Rescue barges. Ordinary old fishing boats, and new ones made by Eureka boat builder Ken Bates. And more. Hills knows many if not most of them — he’s been living and working on the bay, drinking in the lore like an essential nutrient. Sure, he’s just 23. But he’s Leroy Zerlang’s kid: Zerlang, also reared on the bay, who owned the Crab Shack at the foot of C Street when Hills was young (he called Hills, to whom he’s been father since Hills was 1, the “Crab Kid”); Zerlang, captain of the Madaket, the oldest boat on the bay, which began as a ferry boat in 1910 and turned into a harbor cruise boat in 1972, after the Samoa Bridge was built rendering ferries useless. Hills learned how to walk on the Madaket and how to row in a little boat tethered to the dock at the foot of I Street, outside his childhood home. Four years ago, he became the youngest licensed merchant marine captain in California (just like his dad before him). Hills works for Brusco Tug & Barge and Knutson Towboat Co. and is one of just three remaining guys who operate tug boats. He also works for his dad at Zerlang and Zerlang Marine Services, the family’s boat-repair business on the Samoa Peninsula. The

The 58-foot High Sea, owned by Roger Carl, was built in 1971. It’s one of the boats built by Crescent City company Fashion Blacksmith to replace the fishing fleet savaged by the tsunami that struck Crescent City’s harbor in 1964.

Zerlang boat yard is where volunteers and local boatwright Dave Peterson are helping Veterans for Peace restore the Golden Rule, the little peace-protest ketch that in 1958 tried to storm the Marshall Islands atomic testing grounds. Veteran Chuck DeWitt, who coordinates that restoration, is piloting the Baykeeper boat that carries Hills, another Veterans for Peace volunteer named Skip Oliver, and a couple of Journal staffers on this late-November morning. Hills sits back in his bright orange jacket, his Giants cap shading blue eyes under dark bushy eyebrows, and a five o’clock shadow. Coffee cup in one hand, he couldn’t look more at home. His dad was the one who’d planned to conduct this history tour of the boats on Humboldt Bay. But e ngines blow, and duty calls. The son — minus, granted, the load of crusty old jokes his dad’s known for — can step right in, launching the tour from the foot of C Street in Eureka. At the marina, Hills points out the Christine, a 45-foot fir boat built in 1948 by the Makela Brothers, out of Fort Bragg. The Makelas’ fishing boats can be spotted by their pale tan, whitetipped masts, and they’re held together by nails instead of screws and epoxy. There used to be more Makelas here. continued from previous page four: The Sea Wolf, Pacific Seas and Katherine are across the bay in the Woodley Island Marina. But where is Hills’ dad? We zip down the channel toward the enormous, blue-and-red Fortune Amaryllis, out of Hong Kong. Zerlang is trying to assess its struck-dumb generators so it can load its cargo of logs and head to China. We regard the silent ship, then head back to the Eureka Marina, where we round the rusting hulk of the 1944-built Mary Ann Brusco, an old tugboat long docked, ever since the housing market went south in 2007 and log-shipping declined. Nearby, that bright blue barge with MSRC 136 on its hull, looking squat, flat and nonhistorical? That’s the Thrustmaster — if ever there’s a fuel spill on the bay, it and its partner, the Recon 1, will be the first responders, laying out a containment boom and skimming the surface until mop-

up crews arrive. Luckily, there hasn’t been a spill on the bay since the Kuray, banging too hard into some pilings, punctured a tank and dumped 4,500 gallons of fuel into the water back in 1997. The dark blue-and white High Sea, a 52-foot commercial fishing boat, rides ready nearby. After the 1964 tsunami that wiped out the Crescent City harbor and its fishing fleet, a Crescent City sheet metal workshop called Fashion Blacksmith started building boats to replenish the fleet; the High Sea, launched in 1971, was one of those. And now we come to Hills’ first true love, the Stephanie. The faded red “pair trawler,” built from fir, is the second-oldest (mostly) functional boat on Humboldt Bay. It was built in 1917 by Genoa Boat Works for San Francisco International Fish Co., where it was called “No. 3.” Its job was to work in tandem with another boat to drag a net for bottom fish. Tom Lazio — locally famous for Lazio’s, a beloved restaurant once at the foot of C

Street — got the boat in 1941 after the fish company, where he worked, went out of business. He named it after his daughter, Stephanie, brought it north and fished it until 1956 when it got stuck on a rock outside Crescent City. He sold it for a pittance, and 10 years later it was sold again, and the new owners brought it to Eureka. Hills remembers pestering the owner to let him wash the pretty workhorse when he was a little kid. He remembers hearing how, when the ocean got rough, the Stephanie’s crew steered it backwards out the mouth of the bay so the waves wouldn’t bust the pilot windows out. Its pilot house burned one day in 2003; they rebuilt it. Then the federal government started paying dragnet boat operators to give up their boats — their nets caught too many other creatures, including dolphins. The Stephanie was abandoned. But Hills has been looking after it. In 2012, after it had sprung serious leaks and he’d spent all night bailing it out, he, boatwright

The Stephanie, a former trawler built in 1917 in San Francisco by Genoa Boat Works, is the second oldest boat on the bay (the Madaket’s the oldest). Cody Hills is slowly restoring it.

Peterson and boatyard worker Dean Anderson hauled it ashore and gave it seven new planks and 2,000 new screws. Since then, the Stephanie has become part of the Maritime Museum and the Zerlangs, with help from fundraising events, have put some $15,000 into restoring her. We head farther south and cross the bay to the Woodley Island Marina. There’s the Nanbellis Jo, a 58-foot commercial fishing vessel that was the first boat in the bay to be widened in order to handle more gear, worse weather and more catch. On the other end of the scale there’s the 39-foot Terron — the sweetheart of the bay. The tidy, well-kept white boat with green stripes of trim around its hull was built in 1927, its boards fitted together so tight it didn’t need caulking. DeWitt idles the boat a bit longer so everyone’s eyes can linger on the pretty Terron. Nearby lies the white, 37-foot fisher the

Albatross, built in 1927 and one of the few double-enders in port — meaning it has a pointed stern and bow, which makes it more stable, especially in a following sea with swells crashing against the stern. And then there’s the Lohilani, a square-butted little cracker-box oblong built in 1943 that once was a Navy admiral’s barge in Hawaii. When Hill was little, his grandma lived aboard the Lohilani; he remembers being babysat aboard it. It’s owned by somebody else now. We motor around the Humboldt State University’s big, green research boat, the Coral Sea, DeWitt takes the boat back into the bay and points it north. Hills has one more thing — well, a couple — left to show us. As we near the marshy shore of Indian Island, he points at a tiny warped-wood building on stilts at water’s edge: The old Baptist church. Then, he says, see that copse of trees, where the egret rookery is? That’s where Mia,

the black lab and the Madaket’s old mascot, is buried. She lived a long life, charming tourists by swimming after the Madaket, until she died when Hills was 4. Then he lowers his hand, drawing our eyes to what looks like a corroded old wood wall sticking out of the shallows by the shore. That, he says, is writer Jack London’s old boat, the Christine. The nameboard, taken from her long ago, is now at the maritime museum. It’s hard to find evidence proving that this was indeed one of London’s old boats, although a 1966 story in the Eureka Humboldt Standard also says it’s so. London had several sailboats — famously, The Snark — and wrote in a memoir, Four Horses and a Sailor, about sailing in Humboldt Bay. Like the 1910 barfight between London and Stanwood Murphy in the Oberon Saloon in Eureka — recorded later by eyewitness W.J. “Hap” Waters — the story lives on.

The Outdoorsy Type Despite the unmarked turnout, the Johnson Prairie trailhead in Humboldt Redwoods State Park is easy to find — and once on the trail, beauty is to be had in every direction. Redwoods tower above ferns that arch over half-hidden mushrooms and briefly blooming wildflowers. From the Avenue of the Giants, head west on Mattole Road 4.2 miles. (The turnout is 0.1 mile beyond the Big Trees area.) Allow a couple hours round trip for this easyto-moderate hike. You’ll be tempted to stop along Ferndale’s Main Street, but just keep going until you reach Ocean, then hang a left. You’ll see a parking lot on your right. This is your gateway to Russ Park,

105 acres of Sitka spruce, Douglas firs and red alders — with the occasional redwood. The trail options include a fast, steep hike overlooking the Eel River Valley as well as more leisurely loops, including one around Zipporah Russ’ pond. Rent a kayak at HSU’s Aquatic Center (921 Waterfront Drive, Eureka) or HumBoats (601 Startare Drive, Eureka), and launch into Humboldt Bay, a jewel of a water body where you can see working fishing boats up close and catch glimpses of egrets, herons, osprey and other seabirds, plus harbor seals, bat rays and the occasional leopard shark. From a distance, the dunes defining the Samoa Peninsula might seem all of a kind. But park at the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center (220 Stamp Lane, Manila) — a building literally housed in the sand — for a quick self-guided tutorial on the area’s dynamic landscape of forests and salt marshes, sand dunes and beaches,

then traipse out to experience the wonder. If you were, for some unfathomable reason, to visit only one famed outdoor location in Humboldt County, that place would have to be Patrick’s Point State Park (4150 Patrick’s Point Drive, Trinidad). You’ll find sheer cliffs against which waves explode into postcard perfection and from which whales are often spotted, broad sandy beaches with agates and other treasures, miles of hiking trails, a recreated Yurok Village and more. The best day hikes celebrate Humboldt’s redwoods, cliffs, ferns and Pacific — while leaving time for a picnic. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park’s Ossagon Trail stretches a mere 1.8 miles each way, but with enough elevation change to make your thighs burn and enough beauty to cause your heart to sing. The XXX Adults Only Grilled Cheese is something you didn’t know was on your things-to-try-beforeI-die list, but once you have it, you’ll be grateful you didn’t go your whole life missing out. After a dozen or so restaurateurs tried the location (409 Opera Alley, Eureka), one stuck. Café Nooner’s been serving up po’ boys, flatbreads, kebobs and more since 2008, been featured on The Food Network and is one of the only places offering outdoor seating on a sunny day. Do not miss out on the Blue Noon burger, veg-style or otherwise. Drop by the Loleta Cheese Factory (252 Loleta Drive, Loleta) and taste all of its 34 varieties of natural cheese, from fresh curds to Cream Humboldt Insider

City cheddar to Real Humboldt Gold. Bring a cooler so you can stock up, or have a nibble in the garden. The factory is open daily so you can even peer through a window and see how it’s made. Don’t look for the Naan of the Above food truck, look for the peaked yellow canopy strung with lights that forms its ersatz patio (Seventh and I streets in Arcata, Wednesday through Saturday). Whatever you order (creamy chicken curry? saucy chick peas?), just get it with a side order of naan bread. You’ll have to wait 12 minutes (weirdly accurate), but you’ll get a crispedged, fluffy, pull-apart wonder that glistens with butter and sparkles with just the right amount of salt. Even those with an already sunny disposition leave Trinidad’s Beachcomber Café (363 Trinity St., Trinidad) happier people. The place combines feel-good sentiment with baked goods so delish the locals take up most of the seating, and a sense of humor — T-shirts boast, “I was greatly inconvenienced at the Beachcomber Café.” Leave your impatience at the door and don’t forget your own to-go cup — the café doesn’t do disposable. You can’t throw a rock in downtown Eureka without an artist hollering, “Ow!” (Please don’t!) Start with one of the city’s creative anchors, The Morris Graves Museum of Art (636 F St., Eureka). The sculpture garden and seven galleries filled with local heavy hitters and up-and-comers are a monument to just how much this coastal county values artistic achievement. Plus, the building is lovely. If you stumble upon the Romano Gabriel Sculpture Garden (315 Second St., Eureka), you might wonder if the exhibit was snatched up from an alternate version of Disney’s Small World ride. The actual backstory involves an Italian immigrant with strong ties to his homeland and three decades of creating whimsical wooden people and flowers. Eureka Studio Arts (526 Fifth St., Eureka) is run by two long-beloved local artists, Linda Mitchell and Micki DysonFlatmo. They offer classes, workshops and an ongoing display of both art-in-progress and finished pieces by many of Humboldt’s finest. No serious art lover should miss a chance to step inside and say hello. Woodworking in Humboldt is anything but a simple craft. It could be the proximity to old-growth forests or the area’s overall environmental ethos, but a number of artisans have turned to recycling reclaimed

wood pieces into useful and beautiful things. Marvel at them in Humboldt Hardware (531 Second St.). Humboldt State University’s First Street Gallery (422 First St., Eureka) focuses on both student and contemporary art. Exhibitions are designed to stimulate, which is to say, it’s quite cool. If you’ve had your fill of landscapes, pop in and see what the kids are up to these days. Brilliant metalworks, lively nudes and crafty woodwork both functional and fun greet you at Arcata Artisans (883 H St.). The gallery/shop/cooperative showcases the diversity of area artists and gives you a chance to take some home. Old Town Carriage Company starts by the Old Town Gazebo at Second and F streets in Eureka, and while the pace is slow, the romantic spark is quick. Owner and guide Brendan Fearon hails from Liverpool and got his start in the biz in Central Park, so you know this tour of historic Eureka is done with the utmost style. Charter boats from Eureka’s Woodley Island take experienced or novice fishermen out in search of salmon, halibut, tuna, rockcod, lingcod and even some species of shark, depending on the season. Along the way, the most beautiful coastline in California. Captain Tim Klassen’s Reel Steel has been running custom tours for more than 30 years. 707-499-4925. The Arcata Plaza centers around a historically controversial statue of President McKinley. In between vigils, protests, festivals and farmers markets, townspeople of all persuasions can be found hula hooping, hacky sacking or just stretching out in the occasional sun. Enough shops, bars and restaurants line the perimeter to make a day of it. Trinidad has been jokingly described as a “drinking town with a fishing problem.” Immerse yourself in the serious — and

beautiful — side of the tiny city’s maritime history by stopping at the Trinidad Lighthouse (Trinity Street), open for tours during the June 15 Fish Festival. Call 825-2300 for other tour times. A replica of the original on Trinidad Head stands as a memorial is to those lost and/or buried at sea. The view is exquisite. You’re not going to skip walking along Ferndale’s Main Street, are you? Put away your cell phone and be transported back in time by Victorian architecture. OK, you can take it out again for pictures. Park at one end and walk to the other, ending (or starting) with a drink at the Hotel Ivanhoe’s historic saloon, newly remodeled in the 1890s (315 Main St., closed Sundays). Best known as a filming location for Jurassic Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park’s Fern Canyon offers an easy 1.8-mile stroll through a mind-blowingly lush 50-foot-tall canyon. Wear shoes that can get wet and allow plenty of time to get there, as the road in and out is largely unpaved (and often lined with elk). With the Kids Need a place for the little ones to run amok? Sequoia Park (3414 W St., Eureka) has swings, picnic tables, things to climb and a short trail down to the duck pond. Yup, that’s a redwood treehouse with slides coming out of it. With wheelchairaccessible public restrooms and a zoo next door, the park is a perfect break after a long drive. The Sequoia Park Zoo (3414 W St., Eureka) has blossomed into a thoughtful place to share the wonders of the animal kingdom. Yes, the red pandas are insanely adorable and the petting mini-zoo is always a crowd-pleaser, but the real appeal lies in the conservation and education focus, made accessible by the bounty of hands-on exhibits. Stay tuned for the new Watershed Heroes exhibit and its frisky river otters. Humboldt Bay history runs the gamut from the ancestral times of the indigenous Wiyot Tribe to the more recent industrial legacy. Hear all about it from the deck of the Madaket (tickets and boarding at the foot of C Street in Eureka) during a 75-minute tour detailing the past, present and future of the bay. Don’t worry about the kids getting bored — the thrill of the boat and the preponderance of wildlife will keep them entertained.

The Humboldt Coastal Nature Center (220 Stamps Lane, Manila) is unlike any other building in Humboldt. Nestled into the dunes — literally — and a former residence, the center now stands as a gateway into miles of trails wrapping through various coastal ecosystems and ending at a wild and uncrowded stretch of beach. Interpretive exhibits are plentiful and geared for varying ages. Pop in for a preview before you hike and be sure to ask about Dune Bingo. Handmade organic ice cream with carousel seating — what more do you need? Cozy and sweet, Arcata Scoop (1068 I St.) is a place your children will remember. (Remind them that you took them there when they misbehave.) Like many places in Humboldt, the Scoop emphasizes local ingredients. The strawberry ice cream is particularly mouthwatering, although the honey-lavender is something you won’t likely find elsewhere. The only tough part is choosing. Humboldt State University’s Natural History Museum (1242 G St., Arcata) has been enchanting children with environmental exhibits for decades. Learn alongside your small one about birds of the redwood forest, plant evolution and the difference between a trilobite and an echinoderm. A great place to whet your appetite for ecosystem knowledge before exploring the outdoors. Humboldt Insider

grew up in the Midwest, where the preferred swimming holes were made of concrete and dotted with diving boards. So I had to adjust to swimming outside in Humboldt County. Sure, diving into North Coast rivers Story by Rees Hughes and ocean waters qualifies one for Photos by “Polar Bear Club” Christian Pennington membership, but even when the marine layer has made July feel like December along the coast, there are places warm enough to swim all over the county. Swimming where you may see a salmon or an osprey or an otter, where you can stretch out on warm boulders or sandy beaches, away from crowds … well, that was not a difficult adjustment. This list of local swimming holes is hardly complete, and some of the best spots are on private land. Fortunately, there are plenty of public options. Summer 2014

County Parks Beginning with the closest to Humboldt Bay, just 7 miles east of Eureka, is Freshwater County Park. Each summer from mid-June to shortly after Labor Day for generations now, Humboldt County Parks has dammed Freshwater Creek to create a pleasant swimming hole that complements the day-use picnic tables and fire rings. There is a $5 per car fee and no dogs permitted. Like all of the swimming holes described here, there is no lifeguard. Several other county parks feature great summer swimming and allow camping for a fun extended experience. Twelve miles east of Highway 101 on State Route 36, Swimmer’s Delight ($5 for day use) and nearby Pamplin Grove (free day use), are two of several locations on the Van Duzen River,

tend to escape the coastal chill and have swimming holes with minimal current. Similarly, A.W. Way County Park ($3 for day use), located about 6 miles east of Petrolia on a bend in the Mattole River, offers warm days and family-friendly wading and swimming. At the other end of the county, 7 miles north of Trinidad, is Big Lagoon County Park ($2 fee), which Mike Orr, County Parks Supervisor, says is overlooked. “People don’t realize how pleasant the water in the day use area at Big Lagoon can be,” he observes. The lagoon, that is — the nearby ocean is cold and rough with a forbiddingly steep beach. These parks all have restroom facilities and other amenities that can make things a little more convenient, especially for families. continued

State Parks Several of the state parks also offer swimming opportunities. Some 17 miles east of Highway 101 on State Route 36, Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park ($2 fee) remains open for swimming and camping. Richardson Grove State Park ($8 for day use), along the south fork of the Eel River 7 miles south of Garberville on Highway 101, has a wonderful, deep swimming hole. The once premier swimming hole on the South Fork of the Eel, at the Benbow Lake State Recreation Area, is no longer created each summer, but don’t despair — there are plenty of others. Try out the swimming spots near Leatherwood Bar (across from Founder’s Grove, take the Dyerville Exit from Highway 101, go over the bridge and take a right on the service road), Women’s Federation Grove, and the Garden Club Grove, all of which are accessible from the Avenue of the Giants. For even more hidden treasures, Elizabeth Whitley has authored the slim and comprehensive Guide to Natural Swimming Holes in the Eel River Valley and Mad River Wilderness, available at local bookstores. Richardson Grove and Benbow Lake State Recreation Area Ranger Bernadette Maloney adds a cautionary note about warm, low-flow Humboldt County rivers like the Eel, Mattole, Van Duzen and the Mad in the late summer. Blue-green algae thrives in those conditions and can be particularly dangerous to dogs (who don’t think twice about drinking the water). Swimmers are advised to rinse off (and think twice about drinking the water).

Other Dips For those who don’t have the time to venture east on Highway 299 all the way to the Trinity River, there is a popular swimming hole accessible from the south side of the Mad River Bridge in Blue Lake on Hatchery Road from the Mad River Hatchery parking lot. The Trinity River, including its more docile South Fork, offers many great swimming opportunities. It can get hot early in the day and windy later on, so hang on to those layers. And watch out for poison oak. The Willow Creek Community Services District operates Kimtu Beach, which has shallow water on the south side and deeper areas with jumping rocks on the north. Just north of Willow Creek is the popular Forest Service river access, Big Rock, with picnic tables and toilets. Tish Tang Campground ($6 for day use, 530-625-4284), just 2 miles south Summer 2014

of Hoopa, has a half-mile of riverfront and will open Memorial Day weekend. Bear in mind that the Trinity can be treacherous. Its uneven bed, steep drops, swift current and cold water — hypothermiacold at times — can quickly humble the strongest swimmers, a combination that all too often results in tragedy. Whitley prudently advises swimmers not to swim alone and not to dive or jump in “until you have personally gone down to determine the depth and underwater conditions” at any swimming hole. Keep your swimming gear — a suit, beach towel, folding chair, sunscreen, some river shoes and, for exploring, a snorkel and mask — right next to your sweater and jacket, because inland swimming is still an option when the July thermometer is struggling to hit 60 degrees along the foggy coastline. And don’t forget the cooler and picnic basket! Happy swimming.

I think bread and cheese is a couple you always want to bring along, and a little light dessert is required — after all, a picnic is a mini vacation and must end on a sweet note.

Try the Day Spa and the Cool Breeze ($9). Like their names suggest, the cocktails are a refreshing respite from the heat of the summer. (What? This is hot for us.) The Day Spa features Crop Organic cucumber-infused vodka, balanced with white grape juice and soda water. The cucumber and thyme garnish is an advertisement for the mellow deliciousness you’re about to imbibe. It’s a little on the sweet

side, but the evaporative quality of the cucumber offsets the immediate surge of sugar. The Cool Breeze is a stronger alternative. The concoction of citrus vodka, St. Germaine, muddled cucumber and lime juice is served up in a martini glass. It has a two-toned kick: The vodka hits you first but the floral notes of the St. Germaine are not far behind. Both cocktails are as full of sensation as they are flavor. You’re a hammock and a palm frond away from exactly where you need to be. Not drinking? Don’t miss out on the poolside vibe. Just north of Trinidad, Patrick’s Point State Park calls, with stunning vistas, traditional Yurok structures and the appropriately named Agate Beach. Farther up, Orick is is the hub for plenty of trails and camping possibilities. Trinidad’s iconic lighthouse is a symbol of the town where Humboldt County’s fishing past lives on. Every day, the boats that dot the small harbor’s moorings scour the sea among dramatic, rocky outcroppings. For a look back, tour the Trinidad Museum, then stop at the smaller Memorial Lighthouse and take in the view and the sea air. Trinidad Art Night fills the little town with music, food and local artwork every first Friday of the month, and the annual Fish Festival and Blackberry Festival bring in folks from all over. Take a brisk walk along Trinidad’s newly refurbished pier (or a chance at the nearby casino) or stretch your legs along Trinidad State Beach up to peaceful College Cove.

The sign says horses have the right of way, which should give you an idea of McKinleyville’s vibe. Some of its biggest attractions are outdoors. Play with the kids in Hiller Park and hike or bike the paved Hammond Trail. Ditch your shoes and spend the day at Clam Beach (yup, there are clams out there for the digging) kayaking, paddleboarding or just relaxing among the dunes. There’s a course if you’re itching for a round of golf, and there’s even a sweet, little waterfall tucked along the road into town. Already visited the world’s biggest ball of string? Swing by the world’s tallest totem pole. And on McKinleyville Arts Night, the third Friday of each month, you can tool around town and see what local artists, artisans and musicians young and old are up creating — maybe even take a piece home.

Humboldt residents socked in by summer fog know that they can generally find truth and relief in Blue Lake’s motto: sunshine and sea air. Where the Mad River takes its final stretch toward the Pacific, a small community of 1,200 displays an international reach. Once sawmills ruled, but now the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theater imports students from around the world to learn the craft of commedia dell’arte and perform dramas and old-school clowning year round. The schedule is packed during The Mad River Festival, a sprawling summer’s worth of theater and music events over six weeks. Depending on the season, those who are feeling lucky head for the casino or to fish for steelhead near the Mad River Fish Hatchery (also home to some popular swimming spots).

The town’s motto is “river fun in the mountain sun,” and it’s no joke. Willow Creek is hot enough for serious wine making or a cool dip in a Camp Kimtu swimming hole. The weather also means great produce at roadside stands. If you’re adventurous, you can throw on a vest and do some river rafting, and more leisurely types can fish or play a round of golf. Just keep your eyes peeled for a shadowy figure in the distance, because this is Bigfoot country. Skeptical? Swing into the China Flat Museum and explore the lore.

Even those of us who live among redwood giants look up now and then in amazement. Driving along the Avenue of the Giants shows you something new around every corner, something photos and video can’t quite do justice. We lean on words like “majesty” and “breathtaking,” but you kind of have to be there under the ancient, towering canopy to really get it. Take it slow and plan to make a few stops. (Are you not going to stop and see chainsaw sculptures? Please.) From kitsch to fine woodwork, the shops along the Avenue are their own local attraction.

There’s a reason Hollywood keeps coming to film in Ferndale. It’s an idyllic American small town that hasn’t lost its character. (You might recognize Main Street’s Victorian architecture from movies such as The Majestic and Outbreak.) Ferndale’s downtown offers plenty to explore, including artist galleries, old-fashioned shops, classic restaurants and the Ferndale Museum. Grab a coffee and window shop the vintage storefronts and take photos of the Gingerbread Mansion, or put on your hiking shoes and take in the view from the bluffs in Russ Park or Centerville Beach.
