to the Global Career Services Summit
The inaugural Global Career Services Summit emerged from a conversation at the 2015 NACE conference when we were considering crafting a proposal featuring a global career services workshop at a future NACE conference. How we made the leap from a workshop to a major conference still remains a mystery to us. Although after a few months of planning the event, we wondered whether our concept was beyond our capabilities! Fortunately, the first Summit at the University of Leicester was extremely successful and as result of the encouragement of the participants, we planned for the second Summit at the University of Limerick, Ireland under the leadership of Tim Luzader, Purdue University and Gavin Connell, University of Limerick. The concept of bringing together career colleagues from all parts of the globe truly resonated with a broad range of career professionals and we have been extremely gratified with creating a venue to build a network of career services colleagues. Now we are entering the third year of this unique global event with plans already in motion for the fourth annual Global Career Services Summit. Tom Devlin and Bob Athwal

WElcome
from Newcastle University It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Newcastle University for this third Global Career Services Summit. The fact that nearly one hundred people have travelled to the North East of England from around the world, to share expertise and best practice, absolutely underlines for me the importance all universities now place on student employability. With successive governments focussing on the higher education sector, universities have undergone a seismic shift in terms of education provision, student experience and – critically – student outcomes. Fee paying students are now discerning customers who want assurance that their degree will give them a competitive advantage in the crowded graduate jobs market.
The environment in which we operate is changing at a rapid pace: politically with the advent of Office for Students, TEF and Brexit, but also economically, with globalisation, technological developments and the so-called ‘Gig Economy’. It is said that in the next 10 years there will be a new generation of jobs that don’t even exist today. This presents challenges for career experts working in universities to stay ahead of the curve in order to prepare our graduates to be global citizens. At Newcastle, employability and enterprise skills are embedded in our undergraduate programmes. Most of our programmes include opportunities for work-based placements and we have worked with employers to develop a Graduate Skills Framework that identifies the critical skills and attributes employers look for in graduates. This focus on student employability and entrepreneurship was a key factor in our being awarded the highest Gold rating in the national Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) which recognises excellence in teaching and learning in UK higher education. We are proud of this achievement, and also our Best University Employability Strategy award at the 2017 National Graduate Recruitment Awards. But we – and I’m sure all of you – are always striving to improve and learn from the experiences of others so that we can continue to meet our obligation to support our students in their ambitions, help them to fulfil their potential and equip them for a lifetime of career success. Over the next few days, you will have many opportunities for creative thinking, discussion and knowledge exchange, and I wish you all a very enjoyable and productive conference. Professor Chris Day Vice-Chancellor and President of Newcastle University

Employability has never been a bigger issue for universities in the UK. At Newcastle University, we strive to engage, challenge and support our students to discover and fulfil their potential, to be happy and successful, and to go on to shape the societies in which they live and continue to learn. Professor Richard Davies, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Engagement and Internationalisation
The University of California, Irvine Division of Career Pathways is honored to co-host this year’s Summit in partnership with our international colleagues. The Summit embodies the forward thinking needed to ensure meaningful work for all of our graduates as we face new opportunities and challenges in an increasingly global society.

from the planning team
We have had a great year planning this event, and hope that you like the changes we have made to the programme to add to your learning experience. A signature part of this event is that you have come to contribute and share your expertise. With this in mind and the review of feedback from last year, we retained the discussion groups which have been so popular, but also added a few new components. Those include our new poster competition, some problem based learning sets and a World Café. We also added a new insight survey to help us share our day to day experiences. We plan to expand this survey after the summit in order to draw on the wisdom of additional colleagues across our wider professional networks.
Gary Matkin, PhD, UC Irvine Vice Provost and Dean of Continuing Education
The other vital ingredient of the Global Career Services Summit is making new friends and forming new work relationships. So, we have put a great deal of thought into our social programme – and whether you’re new to Global Career Services Summit or you’ve been before, we hope you’ll have a canny time with us in Newcastle and that the conversations you have here will lead to interesting new ideas and collaborations for your work.
Binghamton University (State University of New York) is proud to co-host this year’s Global Career Services Summit and the sharing of ideas to advance student success and career readiness. We hope this international forum fosters rich discussion and delegates return to their campus inspired to innovate even more.
Of course, we also want to give huge thanks to our sponsors, without whom this event would not be possible. We are delighted that you have come to share your own knowledge and perspectives and to help us do our jobs as best we possibly can.
Brian Rose, JD, Vice President for Student Affairs
Having enjoyed the past two Summits in Leicester and Limerick, we were set a high bar for this event. We hope that by the time you are back in your office, you will feel we delivered. Thank you
The University of Cape Town is thrilled to be part of hosting this global gathering of careers service professionals. We welcome this platform for discussion, debate and creative problem-solving on some of the most pressing issues of our time as we collectively seek to prepare graduates to thrive in the uncertain landscape of the world of work. The commitments to action that emerge from this summit are particularly urgent from the point of view of the Global South.
