Targeted Emails
One of the best ways to promote your part-time, internship, placement and graduate vacancies to our students is through our free-to-use portal, Vacancies Online. You’re in control and can upload and edit your vacancies when it’s convenient for you.
Sending targeted emails is a cost effective way to get your message across to students from your chosen demographic, year group or course. This is effective in highlighting current vacancies as well as boosting attendance at employer presentations and recruitment events.
With over 23,000 highly qualified and talented students and graduates registered for the portal and over 6000 active users each month, advertising a position on Vacancies Online should be at the forefront of your recruitment strategy as it gives you maximum exposure to our students and graduates during their job search. Our dedicated team are happy to offer advice about how to target specific groups of students and generate additional applications. Please note that we do not advertise unpaid work, gap year and travel opportunities from unapproved providers or self-employed and freelance positions*. For further information, visit: www.ncl.ac.uk/employers/vacancies *with the exception of some voluntary opportunities with registered charities based in the UK.

Placements and Internship Programmes
Internships
Placements are a recognised part of a degree programme and take place during the penultimate year of study, usually for between 9 and 12 months.
Our internship programme allows North East businesses to utilise the skills of an undergraduate or postgraduate student in a project-based internship. We offer flexible term-time and vacation schemes and provide a comprehensive recruitment service to our clients. The programme provides businesses with a fantastic opportunity to benefit from the knowledge and skills of Newcastle students, which brings a fresh perspective to your organisation. Ask us about eligibility criteria for funding to support you in taking on a student intern.
Internships are usually for a much shorter period of time and can take place in term time or during University vacation periods. Placement students and interns bring enormous value to host organisations and can rapidly make a real impact. Newcastle University Careers Service supports hundreds of students to undertake paid placements and internships each year and we’re here to offer you support too. Not only do we ensure that your vacancies are widely promoted, we also work with you to target particular groups of students, and to design placement and internship programmes to support your business. We can also provide funding to support regional SMEs to recruit our students and graduates. * *subject to eligibility and availability

95%
In 2015 - 2016, 95% of students were offered permanent, graduate level employment following their Santander internship experience.
Santander Universities Programme Newcastle University is part of the Santander Universities programme, which allows small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the region to receive funding support. This funding offers Newcastle University students and recent graduates paid internship opportunities for up to 10 weeks, on either a part or full time basis.
Year-long placement scheme We now offer all* undergraduate students the opportunity to undertake an approved placement year. This gives students the opportunity to spend 9-12 months in paid employment before returning to university to complete their final year. During this time, the student and employer are supported by the university to get the most out of their employment. A placement student can be an affordable recruitment tool to add talent to your organisation. *excludes, Medicine, Dentistry, Speech & Language Science and Chinese/Japanese studies Please give us a call on 0191 208 2020 or email us at recruitmentandevents@ncl.ac.uk to find the right recruitment solution for you. ncl.ac.uk/employers recruitmentandevents@ncl.ac.uk 0191 208 2020

WORKING WITH BUSINESS CONNECT WITH OUR STUDENTS A key part of any effective recruitment strategy is generating increased applications or interest from talented students through profile raising activities on campus. Newcastle University Careers Service offers a number of wellestablished ways for you to do so, but we’re also always happy to explore any new ideas in partnership with you. Many organisations find that a combination of targeted recruitment presentations, drop-in sessions, mock interviews, skills sessions and a range of promotional and brand raising activities are most effective in generating interest in recruitment opportunities within their organisations.
Careers Fairs High-profile recruitment fairs provide you with the perfect opportunity to meet wellprepared and motivated students. We run a number of fairs each year, to coincide with key recruitment deadlines, but please book early as these are incredibly popular. For further information, visit: www.ncl.ac.uk/employers/events
Recruitment Presentations Recruitment presentations on campus enable you to showcase your company and employment opportunities to proactive students who are deciding which companies to apply to. Events can be booked throughout the year but attendance is usually higher in the first semester when more students engage with the Careers Service. Advertising during semester one offers the best chance to raise your profile with students who are making decisions about their careers. Our dedicated staff will help you to plan an effective marketing campaign for your activity and will update you with student numbers prior to your event. We will also guarantee exclusivity on the day of your event by ensuring that no other organisations from your sector will be presenting at the same time. WORKING WITH BUSINESS EMPLOYERS ON CAMPUS Drop-Ins Our busy Careers and Enterprise Centre is the perfect location to hold an informal drop-in session. Passing students will gain awareness of your organisation and will be able to connect with you in an informal setting. While holding your drop-in session, you could also take advantage of our Facebook Live* opportunity. Contact us to find out how you could get involved.
Skills sessions Skills sessions provide an opportunity for you to support your students in developing a variety of skills. Employer-led, but not recruitment focused, topics could include things like; how to succeed at assessment centres, developing leadership or communication skills, technical awareness, commerical acumen, team working etc. We’re happy to advise you of topics that would add most value and then make all necessary arrangements to ensure your skills session is valuable for you and the attendees. In addition to short and focused skills sessions, we also offer the opportunity for a small number of companies to work with us to develop Advanced Awards in a particular skill. These take place over a number of weeks and give our partners the chance to get to know a committed group of students in depth - an ideal precursor to a more formal recruitment process. *Please note: This is a paid for service

WORKING WITH BUSINESS RECRUITING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Each year Newcastle University recruits talented and knowledgeable students from across the globe, making up over a quarter of our total student population. International students can bring different perspectives, fresh outlooks and valuable international experiences to businesses, whether you are looking for someone to identify new market opportunities overseas, or to help with intercultural awareness, business etiquette and language skills. Despite all the benefits that come from recruiting international students, some employers are reluctant to do so because of the recent changes to the UK immigration system, which have left some employers with questions about recruiting anyone who requires a visa. This guide is a useful resource if you have any questions about recruiting international graduates and the Careers Service team are happy to help and advise by referring you to additional resources if you have any questions. www.ncl.ac.uk/careers/jobs/internationalstudents/#workingafterstudying
