Your student leaders across the school have pulled together ideas for this new school magazine, which will be released every term. 11 We will aim to discuss, inform and support our school community with a range of content covering topics from mental health and sexual identity to new school information, such as after school clubs.
We welcome ideas for future articles – please speak to a student leader or contact Miss Gardner
MYHEROES
My heroes
My hero does not wear a cape but they do save peoples’ lives.
They may not want to work Christmas and other dates but they still are in working their shift
We clapped for them during hard times and they thanked us for our help.
But we are not the heroes
They are the real ones.
Working over time during hard times
Not wanting to do it but still doing it
To makes sure people stay well.
They wear a uniform that says NHS
They are my true heroes because they keep my future dream alive.
I will wear a green uniform that says ambulance
Going to give emergency treatment to help save a life
That is my dream
But a few inspire me to carry on to reach the dream
That’s why they are my heroes
Are they yours?

What’s your favourite thing to teach in photography?
AHE: digital
LTA: the dark room
ABE: I really enjoy working in the darkroom It gives the chance to take photography into a very create area of exploration and experimentation.
What do you do in photography?
AHE: merge images, change colours and much more
LTA: learn about how photographs impact our lives
ABE: We teach both digital and analogue techniques. Analogue work provides the fundamentals needed to understand photography, while digital work provides a grounding in the use of contemporary technology Underlying this is the fact that photography is an art form and a creative subject Ultimately, the creative process is the main focus. We just happen to use lens-based equipment instead of brushes and paints.
What’s your favourite artist to research?
AHE: artists not just photographers
LTA: Steve Mcurry
ABE: Far too many to mention, but I enjoy the work of the photographer Bill Brandt Our students research so many different artists during their photography course that I am learning all of the time
What’s your favourite technique to use?
AHE: double exposure
LTA: photograms
ABE: Experimental work in the darkroom is always exciting and throwing up new possibilities. Watching images appear in the developing tray is what all art is; Magic!
Is there something you would love to teach but haven’t yet?
AHE: more experimental techniques
LTA: photographic emulsion
ABE: I would like the opportunity to widen our ability to work with a greater variety of equipment Twin reflex cameras and photo-stencilling techniques would be a really exciting prospect
What cameras do you use? If you could use any camera, which one would it be?
AHE: At school Nikon D3300 Canon cameras are also good
LTA: a personal favourite is Olympus om10, analogue cameras, and pinhole cameras
ABE: We use Nikon digital cameras and a range of analogue SLR cameras such as Olympus, Pentax and Cannon, to name a few
Have you ever been to a photography show or art show and would you recommend it if yes?
AHE: I like local ones as you can see more underestimated people
LTA: Wakefield Art Gallery
ABE: Many times, to both, but most recently the Matthew Conduit show at the Graves Art Gallery is one I would recommend. A local Sheffield-based photographer who records ‘Texture and Colour’ through his images of the local area and the East coast near Whitby and Staithes
Where would you like to go and what would you like to take a picture of if you could?
AHE: Landscapes
LTA: ancient ruins and I’d love to go to India and South America
ABE: Japan has always struck me as such a ‘different’ landscape and different culture to our own I think I wouldn’t be able to put my camera down, so yes, Japan
Are there any trips if you choose photography as an option?
AHE: Moorgate Cemetery
LTA: it changes all the time, in the past we have been to Harry Potter Studios, and Sheffield city centre

ABE: Tokyo and other Japanese destinations would be interesting
Why should people pick photography?
AHE: it’s a different way of being creative
LTA: we live in a world of images, creativity is so important!
ABE: Photography is a branch of the Arts Choose it if you enjoy being creative and like the chance to do things that interest YOU. In photography, there is no right or wrong. You either do something well or not so well. We encourage you to be independent and to find your own way of expressing yourself. That is what art is; expressing yourself through your own ideas and thoughts
When I found out I was an Anne Frank ambassador, I was over the moon as I had wanted to do it for such a long time. I was just so happy that I was going to help educate people about her incredible story I am one of 130 people who are an Anne Frank ambassador and I feel so happy that I can call myself an Anne Frank ambassador and wear the badge.
Yours sincerely Charlie L 9A
“When I signed up to become an Anne Frank ambassador, I knew it was something that I wanted to do. To help change the world and make it into a better place where people deserve to know about the holocaust and what young children went through. I have enjoyed the activities that I have participated in the AFT (Anne Frank Trust) such as The Anne Frank meeting where we got to meet the other ambassadors and the Anne Frank exhibition. That was a blast. I cannot wait for more exciting opportunities to come as my time as an Anne Frank ambassador.”
Hello, my name is Chloe and I’m here to talk to you about dyslexia and how there needs to be more coverage of this important issue. Do you have dyslexia?
Do you have a hard time in your school life with people bullying you?
49% of people have dyslexia who do not know about it. It is very hard for some people to open up about what’s going on in their life. Let's talk! Let’s normalise dyslexia so we feel confident in speaking out.
A speech about toxic masculinity
I’m Chloe and I’m here to talk to you about toxic masculinity and how to overcome it.
Too many men these days suffer from depression. Put your hand up if you hide emotions and feel like you are not strong enough!
I believe that men should be more open about their emotions and that we should be more confident and supportive to help them feel brave enough to be themselves and have a similar confidence in their own body and mind.
I have been surrounded by the most amazing people, who I have had with me throughout my school life. This has made a huge difference to how comfortable I have felt and how I can ask for support I felt like moving to another centre would be overwhelming and effect my social interactions as well as my teacher relationships and learning. Staying at Brinsworth has been the best for me and I would recommend it to others
What has been your favourite part of year 12?
I am part of Brinsworth Academy’s Writing Club, which is full of laughter and lots of creativity. We share ideas and stories as well having out own little projects which we all work and develop both together and independently It brings lots of opportunities like trips and competitions. I have been published into three books so far and cannot wait to see what the future holds for my writing.
What is your favourite subject?
I do History, English Literature and Art, and I love them all! I cannot decide between History and English because they are both full of exciting opportunities and learning. My teachers also are amazing and they hold the same level of enthusiasm and interest as me in their subject, which is why my learning is so enjoyable.
What do you think the benefits of Sixth Form are?
I like the fact that we don’t do as many subjects so it’s easier to go into depth in those that you are interested in With directed study it also gives you free learning time, which trains you to organise your time effectively to complete coursework, homework or any other tasks related to you subjects. We also get free periods, where we can have a break from learning; this helps to feel less overwhelmed with A- levels
Do you want to go to university?
I haven’t thought about this much yet as I feel a little overwhelmed with all the different options.I know that there’s lots of support in school so I am going to speak to heads of year and my teachers to get a wider understanding of the requirements and different universities.
What do you want to do as a career?
I would love to go into something that involves writing as I love creating fictional stories, or something relating to History as I am a history nerd. I know I want to publish my writings as some point in my life, so I am looking forward to achieving this in the future.
THEESCAPISMHERO
You came to me in a dream,
How, I have no idea, I didn’t even know your name yet.
Throughout the years you’ve seen me change, evolve is what I’d like to say,
You stayed, visited me in the night, time and time again
Who are you? Did I create you?
You showed me your origins when we first met
That world beyond my own, one which confuses and fascinates.
At the same time I create and write about it.
Creating that Hero, a survivor past death
Does this manifest it to be true?
You’ve been my escape, you still continue to be
Causing the daydreams I accidentally stare off into.
After everything I’ve gone through,
It still has no comparison to the challenges you’ve faced
Will you distract me, while reality blasts in the background?
You watched time pass and the events come and go
Each time there’s something new, something changed but you stayed
Stayed as you became more and more,
Stayed to see me evolve, from the imaginative little girl to the creator.
Do you think I’m stuck in my head, like everyone else says?
You’ve been woven into all my stories
You’re my fake name yet as real as your world
At times you’re still a character written in pages, At other times a Guardian of your realm.
Who are you?
I came to you in a dream, not telling you my name so soon I told you my truth and my stories, my lifetimes. Write as if it’s the truth, and compile it into my being, I am Star Yatamori, Guardian of Tironyon I am not such a Hero of escapism.
- Star Yatamori (Isabella Garvey)
Rise Up
Cleo didn’t believe in Egyptian myths. She thought they were stupid stories people made because they didn’t have science or anything to prove against it. That was until she saw it The thing that changed her life for the worst
Last autumn, the nightmare began
It was October when Cleo first landed in Egypt. It was humid yet cold, the desert air surrounding her and making her sweat. She decided to go straight to her hotel to sleep before she went to see the main reason she went there: the tomb
It was morning time and she decided to finally go to the long awaited, cleopatra’s tomb. She was incredibly exited and she practically skipped to the site. At the site, Cleo stared at the sarcophagus in awe at how much detail the maker put into it. At dusk fall, she was now the only one there. This time she was not staring in awe, instead fear
The top of the sarcophagus was scraping against the bottom and out came a rotting, mummy wrapped hand. The room was filled with the smell of rotting flesh. All she could hear was the screeching of the sarcophagus and her own heavy breathing. Acting with her own fight or flight senses, she tried to climb out using the ladder but it had disappeared She turned around being faced with the horrifying face of the mummy The putrid stench from the mummy’s wrappings wafted in her face
The ancient hand reached to grab her.
Hi my name is Chloe. My best friend is Cara and we are both are in 7R. I have really enjoyed my drama lessons after school.
I think Brinsworth Academy is a good school I have really liked my first year at Brinsworth and can't wait for Brinsfest!
This year I have been/going to Belgium, Poland, France, Greece and Poland again I'm very excited to go to different countries and happy to.
My favourite places I've been to are Belgium and Malta. It's very nice in Malta; the sea is clear blue Belgium was very cold when I went but their history is amazing and the place is beautiful!
TECHNOLOGY
Technology has changed how I learn, making information easy to access and lessons more personalised With the internet, I can find extra resources beyond my lessons, helping me understand subjects better. Learning apps adjust to my pace, keeping me interested and improve my skills
However, not everyone has the same access to technology, which can be unfair. It’s also easy to get distracted by entertainment on devices In the future, advancements like AI could make learning even more personalized.
By fixing these issues, we can make education better and more inclusive for everyoneAdditionally, technology has stopped children from spending time playing outside, instead they are inside constantly in front of a screen.
This problem should be taken seriously and solved
Students have been really enjoying the newly created reading corner in the library at Brinsworth Academy As you can see, this space is themed, relaxing, and inviting for students to come and read in a cosy space with brand new books and comfy cushions.
STUDENT LEADER
The role of a student leader is to help and support and to contribute to the the school and community to make it a better environment for the people in it
Being a student has many benefits such as it makes you a better person and it looks great when signing up for stuff such as colleges and universities. However being a student leader isn't easy you have to be ready to commit and help the school when in need and you need to be resilient.
You need to show respect in all aspects of school and the community and you need to show responsibility in your actions as you are the role models However being a student leader is also about meeting new people and gaining new friends and is definitely worth being apart of and is a great environment to be in
