This booklet gives you an idea of some of the enrichments that we offer: clubs and societies, health and wellbeing activities, super-curricular activities to develop what you do in your timetabled lessons, and activities to support careers, life experiences and develop your leadership skills.

ENRICHMENT AT NEW COLLEGE
We have something for everyone and expect all our students to take part in some form of enrichment alongside their timetabled lessons. If there are any activities that you would like to take part in that isn’t listed, speak to a member of college staff or the Senior Leadership Team in September.
Enrichment activities are an important way of making new friends, trying new things and helping you get to where you want to go after sixth form college. It is the combination of your results and wider skills that will get you offers for degrees, apprenticeships and jobs. Universities and employers know that taking part in enrichment activities says a lot about the kind of person you are and the ways in which you have developed while at college.

Specific information about the start dates of enrichment activities, times and venues will be shared with all students in September during our Freshers Fair.

Karate Club A 5 week Martial Arts introduction (Karate, Kickboxing, Jiujitsu, Aikido & Kick-jutsu) a different focus each week. Each of the sessions will start and finish with mindfulness, this is a great tool for mental health and well being.
Do you struggle with stress, anxiety, low mood or lack of motivation?
These sessions will involve an introduction to journaling and mindfulness as a tool to manage your emotional wellbeing. These short sessions will equip you with the tools to be able to manage your emotions better and relieve stress and promote a sense of calm. Most sessions last around 30 minutes on Teams, and involve journaling and a mindfulness meditation which should help you to feel calm and relaxed.

GOLF Using the driving range bays at Pontefract Golf course for students to have tuition to learn how to play golf.

STRAVA RUNNING CLUB Regular exercise is fantastic for improving your physical and mental well-being; so why not join our Strava running club?! STRONG 30 STRONG is a total body workout which combines conditioning & cardio in a 30 minute HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) class for all abilities using original music to match every move.
Finance - what to do if you're struggling, understanding different types of finance. Well being - where to get help.

This will be a gradual introduction to running 5k in distance. We will be starting with short distances and building up to running a total distance of 5k. This is perfect for anybody who has never participated in much exercise and/or running before, and would like to improve their confidencefitness.and

DEBATING SOCIETY
This is an extracurricular science, technology, engineering and maths club open to ALL students during which science will be investigated in a wider context of A-level and BTEC courses. This will include the analysis of big data (from space telescopes) to learning how to take a cutting from a plant; investigating the properties of sound and how to visualise it; stimulating demonstrations; problem solving; student led discussions and chemical 'escape rooms'!
STEMCLUB
You’ll be given the opportunity to develop your own music skills and compete against other bands/acts within the region.
It will help boost mental well-being, and develop team and communication skills which are essential for any workplace.
A society dedicated to developing, expressing and exchanging different views and opinions on a range of Weeklytopics. meetings with a college debating competition and a trust-wide debating competition within the year.
History Book Club allows students, in a relaxed and friendly seminar style atmosphere, to engage into deeper research and discussion regarding key debates and themes contained within the A-Level History course. Students will be given the opportunity to read articles and book chapters from eminent historians and link these back to their own studies. Perfect for students with a passion for History and those pushing for the highest grades.
DARTS Playing darts helps you to develop your Maths and Interpersonal/Social Skills, as well as Problem Solving, Teamwork, Initiative, Communication and Confidence.
BOOKHISTORYCLUB
GRADE 5 MUSIC THEORY AND BEYOND
Aimed at students (whole college) who need to gain grade 5 theory to access higher practical grades on instruments or for university entrance or own pleasure. Open to all music students and other students who want to do this as an enrichment.
GROUPVOCAL Choir for pleasure and performances. This enrichment will build students confidence, enhance team working skills and communication and it's just a fun enrichment to be part of.
Pop/rock group with extended horn section, backing vocals etc. The overall aim for the club would be to develop students musical skills and capabilities but also allow students to meet and socialise with other like minded individuals that they may have not come across in the classroom - this will give all students opportunity for social and confidence development.
Be part of the College Production. This is a whole college enrichment with auditions for leading roles only. This enrichment will help students to develop team work, communication, mental well being etc. You will develop in all ways!

A club for students who enjoy reading and discussing texts (that aren't studied on a Literature course), students will play a big part in the books we choose to read and we'll hopefully cover a range of genres and text types throughout the year.

Exposing students to French culture and the French language, improves students listening skills and is something to highlight in Uni interviews or UCAS applications
BANDWIND/CONCERT
A chance for musicians of any standard to rehearse and perform with a Wind/Concert band. Open to any wind instrumentalist, percussionist, bass guitarist etc.

ART & CRAFT CLUB
An opportunity to explore a range of art and craft techniques in an informal and creative environment. Art teachers will guide you through a series of exciting workshops in drawing, painting and making. The sessions will fun and relaxing.
E-SPORTS
Competitive gaming using the NCP Media department's consoles and equipment. Supporting students' mental wellbeing and developing social interactions. It may also add to students' applications/CVs if competing nationally and/or applying for games design courses.
GUITARCLUB
An opportunity for guitar enthusiasts to get together & jamplaying songs linked to function band. Great for mental wellbeing, developing social interactions and University/Job applications.
COMMUNITYLGBTQ+
New College’s Student Led LGBTQ+ community is a lunchtime, informal get-together for anyone who is, or feels they might be, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and / or queer, and anything else in the community. This group is for you to raise issues, celebrate diversity and feel comfortable discussing LGBTQ+ issues with others. Fellow LGBTQ+ staff help facilitate this group.
LanguageUrdu Sessions will be teaching basics of the Urdu language and a chance for students to make friends with like-minded people.
Knitting/crochetclub A club for knitters and crocheters, or those who are wanting to learn.

Providing experience of unique interview styles students may face in an Oxbridge interview for a Biology related subject. Support students to practise answering open ended, challenging and often strange questions. Boosting students confidence at talking in front of others.
Chance of attending the Big Bang competition and entering the National Science and Engineering awards. Helps students to develop research skills, helps you to make links with potential employers/universities and have opportunities to visit/contact industrial/academic institutions.
STEM project that students carry out independently but with the help of mentors from industry or university. Similar to EPQ, but STEM-based. It can involve research in the lab, surveys, or purely theoretical projects.

Suitable for students who study psychology and students that have an interest in psychology, covering contemporary issues such as psychology and social media/wellbeing, positive psychology, the psychology of serial killers , how the brain works etc. This enrichment will extend the source specification for current psychology students and serve as a great introduction to those who do not study psychology.
PSYCHOLOGYFORENSIC Mini-lectures/workshops covering offender profiling and the criminal brain. This enrichment will support students considering studying Psychology (Psychology related courses) at University.
The Collaborative:MediaMag
Trust-wide college magazine. Students write, edit and design the magazine with a teacher from each college acting as the Editor. Students can write about anything within the Media or can just volunteer to design the magazines aesthetics.
Creative Discussion and Oracy Development An opportunity to discuss current events in the creative world and share your thoughts. We will work towards Oracy awards from Bronze to Gold throughout the year too. You do not need to be studying a creative subject, just an interest in a creative area would be great!
WEEKLY SPANISH FILM CLUB Weekly
Spanish film club - for all students (as films have English subtitles). Great for students interested in world Thiscinema.enrichment will help students gain an appreciation of other cultures and languages through film and will prove essential for any undergraduate degree course involving languages. It is of course, very valuable for students interested in film studies as well as many other arts disciplines to show a greater awareness of films other than the typical Hollywood production.
The long term aim would be to make students confident orators which will be useful for university seminars and is a key employability skill.
PHILOSOPHYCLUB
A student led discussion group based on the principle of P4C (Philosophy for Communities) that good thinking is learned from dialogue with others.
It will be open for students of Religion, Ethics and Philosophy as well as all other students with an interest in ethics, philosophy and/or discussion. It will have a positive impact on auracy and debating skills - it will give students confidence to express their ideas and questions in a more structured environment.
THERE'S NO PLANET B! Global, geographical issues discussion group. The aim of this group is to widen students' knowledge and awareness of geographical issues; promote discussions; help develop critical skills and decision making; develop a love of the subject.
Offered by the Royal Society of Chemsitry. Monthly online competition. Five 'Google-proof' questions issued on the first of each month from January - June were set by an experienced team of teachers and university chemists.

Offered by the Royal Society of Chemistry. Designed to challenge and inspire, the UK Chemistry Olympiad is the leading chemistry competition for students in secondary education across the British Isles. This enriching experience is a unique opportunity for students to push themselves further and excel in the chemistry field.
Budding chemists will develop critical problem-solving skills, learn to think more creatively and get a chance to test their knowledge in new, real-world situations. They could even find themselves flying off to represent the UK at the prestigious International Chemistry Olympiad.
They are designed to push boundaries, stretch students' knowledge and encourage them to think about science and use the internet to find scientific data.
Students can come and work on pieces of their own work, get advice from teachers, peers and take part in creative workshops to help with the creative process.
BEYONDBIOLOGYTHE SPEC Biology masterclasses providing degree level tasters on topics such as neuroscience, animal ethics and nutrition and some practicals such as advanced dissestion skills.

Will be suitable for students who aspire to be writers/ are already working on pieces, but open to all.
Providing students with an insight into life-science degrees
LIFE DRAWING FROM THE HUMAN FORM 5 sessions of life drawing in the Art Foundation studio, working with a life model. It will create an opportunity for Yr 13 Visual Arts students to gain work for their portfolios or for those interested to have a go at something different.

CREATIVE WRITING FOR BEGNINNERS
Students will be exposed to a range of texts not covered in the courses we offer, extending their understanding of literature, writer's craft and context. This will particularly strengthen applications to English and Arts-based courses.
Writing also develops creativity and boosts positive mental health.
MATHS AT UNI ADMISSION TESTING Support for those required to sit a Maths-linked admissions exam for their University course (e.g. Maths / Physics / Engineering / Computer Science) - most likely Oxbridge / Russell Group applications & followed up with mock interviews & practice tasks. UKMT SENIOR MATHS CHALLENGE Promoting a love of problem-solving! This will help you prepare for the competitions in November at either individual or team level.
LAW SOCIETY
Students will have the opportunity to take part in a simulated court experience. In small teams they will be presented with a case and a side to represent.
Students must take on the role of counsel (barristers and solicitors) and research the law to provide arguments for a client with the aim of winning the case!
True Crime For fans of true crime!
The Raising Aspirations Programme focuses on supporting students in successful applications to competitive courses and universities such as the Russell Group, including Oxford and Cambridge.

An economics competition for Y13 students across the Trust. Working in small groups, the challenge is to recommend to the Bank of England the right decisions about the future direction of monetary policy?

UAL Year 12 Play UAL Diploma in Performing Arts will be working with York St John to devise a play. All UAL Year 12 Diploma students in CH class need to attend this enrichment. Performance is in February 2023.
Veterinary and Animal Industries ProgrammeEnrichment(VAEP)
An engaging enrichment programme where will will explore the role of paraprofessionals covering subjects such as animal health, anatomy, handling, behaviour, training, husbandry, and much more! Delivery will be a mixture of lectures, workshops, seminars and practical's to prepare you for your next steps within the animal industry.*
*Potential for hands on work experience in a Small Animal Rehabilitation Centre and with a Veterinary Physiotherapist whilst actively engaged in the programme. Trips to events and external speakers will also be included.

Students will conduct their own mini experiment/investigation in psychology. This would include: researching a study/concept in psychology, replicating or developing a experiment to test this concept followed by students doing a write up in journal format once they have gathered their data/collected their results.

This enrichment aims to help you to develop vital research skills that will support your future studies both within College and at University. Whilst completing this enrichment is a requirement for enrolment onto the AQA Level 3 Extended Project Qualification you are not committed to doing this and the skills developed are of value to everyone. We will not use the external Young Enterprise, giving greater flexibility and reducing costs. We are hoping to work with a local charity and are in discussions with the Prince of Wales Hospice. ~The basis of the enrichment is the same in that students form a team and create a product/service to sell and raise money.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an amazing complement to academic life, helping our students stretch their comfort zones, build the confidence they need to get ahead and gain the skills that employers want in the workplace. It helps students develop great working relationships that benefit classroom dynamics leadership skills. Our students engage in active citizenship, giving back to our community, improve their fitness and learn a skill – all activities that need support. It provides students with a prestigious certificate recognising their achievement and an improved chance of getting into university, college or employment.
MARKETING To assist in marketing events at schools, to promote New College Pontefract, answer pupils questions and share experiences. Gain confidence, communication skills and improve your time management skills.

If you're applying for a job either directly in the NHS or in an organisation that provides NHS services, you'll be asked to demonstrate the values of the NHS Constitution and how they would apply in your everyday work. If you're applying for a university course such as nursing you'll be also be tested on your values. This is why is it so important for you to think about how you demonstrate the values in your applications and interviews. This enrichment will take place over 6 sessions and is aimed at students interested in NHS careers such as nursing, midwifery, paramedic science, physiotherapy.

Teaching Training - part of the Oracy and Reading Project Teaching Training enrichment will provide opportunities to work with Yr6 pupils in primary schools. The main part of this enrichment will be providing training and support for students involved in the Oracy and Reading Project, which offers students the chance to complete 5/6 week blocks of mentoring pupils on Wednesday afternoons in primary schools in Rotherham. YOU MUST BE FREE IN BLOCK E ON YOUR TIMETABLE TO DO THIS. There may be other opportunities to do mentoring work with primary pupils with subjects,othertoo.
Original Syn Games Company
The idea is the students will form a functioning games company, working on developing and building a game. Ideally, it's aimed more at students who don't do games design but they would still be welcome - it would just feel like duplication of their lessons a little. It would be like working in different roles for a games development team.

In a creative role you might help teaching staff produce resources to support and enrich the learning of your subject; from posters and worksheets to quizzes, videos and live events. As a subject or College ambassador you can choose your level of participation to suit your current skills and areas to develop: This will be a fantastic enrichment to help develop your confidence, team work, initiative and communication skills and it will also make an excellent contribution to any personal statement/CV/Job application.
To become a peer mentor, you will access training on topics such as understanding mental health, self-care, building resilience and tackling stigma. In groups, you will work with a local school to deliver training to younger students on such topics, helping to support them in developing their confidence and resilience.
