Message from the Headteacher

New Collaborative Learning Trust

We have finally come to the end of a long and arduous half term. Students and staff have managed to adapt very well to the new way of working and although these have been very testing times, our community has embraced it with positivity and resolve. I am deeply proud of every single individual within this organisation and feel privileged to have worked alongside them. This term has really cemented my belief that we have some of the hardest working children in Rotherham. I would like to personally thank all of you, our parents, for your patience and support through several bubble closures and the need for many of our children to self-isolate. We really do acknowledge and appreciate the undue stress it places upon you as parents to provide alternative childcare arrangements when provided with only a days’ notice. Let me reassure you that whilst your child’s learning is very important to us, so is the health and safety of our community and such decisions are only made having been directed by Public Health England.

As many of you will know, Wingfield Academy has this month joined the New Collaborative Learning Trust. Richard Fletcher; CEO asked that we publish the following on his behalf; we are delighted that Wingfield Academy is joining us, and we are really looking forward to working closely with Wingfield’s staff, students, parents and carers over the months ahead. Our Trust has three colleges in Bradford, Doncaster and Pontefract, with over 5,000 students studying with us, so although we are new to Rotherham, we know Yorkshire well. The process of bringing Wingfield Academy into the Trust started about 24 months ago, and in that two years I have had a lot of opportunity to get to know Phil Davis and the academy’s senior team well, too.

Finally, I would like to invite you all to read our Christmas newsletter and I look forward to seeing you all in the new year, children will return on Monday 4th January 2021.

Contribution Over Lockdown We can all relate to just how hard times have been this year, the following students however, embraced the challenge of working hard during the unprecedented time of being at home and made outstanding ‘contributions over lockdown’. Congratulations, well done and keep up the hard work to; Y8; Jake, Bea and Nikki. Y9; Louie, Millie, Olivia Jess, Evelyn, Abby, Lauren, Erin, Joseph, Ashton, Molly and Milly. Y10; Jasmine and McKenzie. Y11; Keira and Tegan.

It is important to understand that joining our Trust is not just a paper exercise, but one which will bring concrete benefits to the lives of Wingfield students. Wingfield Academy is no longer a stand-alone school. For the first time, it can access a wealth of support and experience from across the Trust. Our original institution, New College Pontefract, has recently won the TES Sixth Form College of the Year and TES Overall FE Provider of the Year awards. I also want to take a moment to explain the Trust’s core values. Our vision is that: Our colleges and schools will make a significant difference to the lives of young people. As a result, together we will make a positive contribution to social mobility. Having spent a lot of time with Wingfield governors and the senior leadership team already, I know that they share this vision. Being part of our Trust means we want to help make a significant difference to the life chances of Wingfield’s students, by supporting

them in raising achievement and broadening their progression opportunities, by helping more of them to progress to quality post-16 and higher education, and ultimately by helping them access better-quality employment. We are passionate about this, and across the Trust you will find all of our staff, wherever they are based, are united in this goal. It is because Phil Davis and the staff at Wingfield Academy share our commitment and passion that we are so confident about the future prospects of Wingfield’s young people. We know, too, that in order to achieve our vision, we need to collaborate closely with parents in nurturing that culture of high expectations and aspirations. This is why I am writing to you today and why I look forward to meeting many of you as soon as I can, once we have moved beyond the current Covid-19 restrictions. Until then, I hope you and your family stay safe and well. Best wishes

Learning Resource Centre Our brand new Learning Resource Centre (LRC) opened this half term and has become a warm and cosy home for both Year 7 Accelerated Reader and Year 11 Independent Study after school. As the space continues to grow throughout next term, it will develop into a hub of support and creative opportunities for students across all year groups.

Welcome to the Beehive We are proud to announce that this year we have developed our Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs provision and launched The Beehive, an extension of The Hive, a space designated to supporting students with their SEMH needs. The Beehive is a welcoming and warm environment in which students can work with their key workers through bespoke interventions, complete a respite programme or just attend drop in sessions before school, at break and at lunch. We envision that our SEMH curriculum will support students at Wingfield Academy, to develop their understanding of their own mental health, with the ability to recognise their emotions. Our vision is that through a therapeutic approach we will provide our students with opportunities to understand how their emotions affect them, and those around them. We use a range of strategies that enable students to respond to challenging situations and within a range of contexts, so that they can develop, grow and thrive, making a positive contribution to society. Below are some of the comments we have received from the students who access the Beehive. Y8 CE: Thank you for letting me come to the Beehive, I enjoy my craft sessions as they help to calm me down. I find them very relaxing. Y8 JB: Fun in general, you get to make things and most importantly they have fish! Y8 DB: You can tell someone how you feel, we do things that help to cheer me up, you feel comfortable and safe in the environment and people listen to your problems. Y8 CS: When you are down it can bring you happiness and joy, someone to talk to, do fun things, safe place to go to, helpful, very kind and listens to your problems. Year 7 News Settling In What a fantastic start our beautiful Year 7s have made. They've looked immaculate in their uniforms, they've quickly learned how to make their way around the building, they've been eager to learn in lessons and even got their heads around Google Classroom and the introduction of ILT (homework). We've continued to celebrate success and have high expectations because we do believe that every single new member to the Wingfield team can achieve their potential!

The winner of the best question from Wingfield was: Connie Well done to both students! Here are some comments from the students who took part…

The Year 7 team wish you a restful Christmas and thank you for all your support this term during what I'm sure you can agree has thrown us all some challenges. Year 9 News Despite Year 9 starting the year with great uncertainty, they have demonstrated an abundance of enthusiasm, perseverance and resilience in their approach to learning. We have celebrated their success and triumphs through weekly ‘appreciations’ shared during form time on Fridays, thus providing our Year 9s with the recognition they deserve when following our values. The following students have received more than five appreciations over the term: Faith, Louie, Olivia, Bailey, Millie, Abby, Juanita, Sydney, Yosi, Joseph, Danielle, Ruby and Callum. Well done all! We’ve also celebrated success through ‘The Pumpkin Awards’ prior to the half-term break,

where those who excelled in subjects received an autumnal pumpkin and certificate: Madi – English, Ashton – Spanish, Emily – Art Olivia – Performing Arts, Aland – Computer Science, George - Design Technology, Yasmin – History, Dylan – Music, Josh – Science, Josh – Geography, Millie – Maths Melissa – PSHEE and RE.

We now encourage them to take the time to rest and recuperate (with just a little revision) so that they come back refreshed and ready for their PPEs. Well done, Year 11!

Further to this, the following students have secured a score of 1 and/or 2 in all of their subjects this term: Connor, Aimee, Melissa, Lacey, Mason, Jacob, Carey-Leigh, Fin, Igor, Evie, Isabelle, Lewis, Oliver, Harry, Joshua, Daniel, Camron, Leon, Jaiden, Oliver, Cameron, Poppy, Ashton and Connor. Lastly, a huge thank you to Alena and Olivia for their contribution in decorating the LRC with their immense talent in art. The LRC is a more colourful and vibrant atmosphere because of their voluntary efforts, and is much-loved by staff and students alike. Miss Barker and I are so proud of Year 9 – and we hope they continue to show resilience, respect and responsibility towards their learning, and around school, in the New Year. Keep up the great work, Miss Stein.

Year 11 News We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Year 11 students who have made an excellent effort this term. They have approached their GCSE year with maturity and determination, attending Period 6s and Saturday sessions in order to prepare themselves for success in the Summer. We are incredibly proud of some of the exceptional revision, classwork and controlled assessment pieces that have been produced; from musical performances to hand crafted tables our students have not failed to impress! Included is a sample of the artwork from our artist of the term, Finlay. In particular, we would like to congratulate our highest ranking students for their Attitude to Learning in both the classroom and towards their revision:

Maths News The Maths Department would like to say a massive WELL DONE to the following students who have completed the largest amount of independent learning on Hegarty Maths this term. They have shown a great work ethic and fantastic determination. Year 7; Isabella, Jack, Josie, Lewis and Mia Year 8; Freddie, Kobe, Max, Sam and Summer Year 9; Alex, Bailey, Edmund, Hannah and Jasmine Year 10; Amelia, Ellisha, Maisie, Rae and Tegan Year 11; Alex, Kristian, Josh, Ruby and Ryan

Featured Subject; Art Our Y8 Artists have been experimenting with surrealist ideas, delving into their subconscious mind to create intriguing and thought-provoking art. Y7s are continuing to experiment with the formal elements of art: tattooing bananas to explore line, investigating form through their different senses: taste, touch and sight to create a realistic biscuit outcome. Y9's are continuing to explore identity through portraiture, looking at the work of Anna Strumpf and Hattie Stewart. GCSE artists are continuing with personalised portfolios, developing skills in fine art, product design, photography, textiles, glass and ceramics.

Christmas at Wingfield This year we sent out a message to look for a sponsor to help us ‘deck the halls’ and purchase the academy’s Christmas tree. We were absolutely delighted with the response! As a result, we can reveal this year’s fabulous Christmas tree was sponsored by; Phoenix Book Keeping and Accountancy Ltd and Julian Chambers of Christmas Trees Yorkshire. Thank you to each and every one of you who contacted us to offer your support.
