NEXT STEPS FOR PARENTS AND FAMILIES

Welcome to the Wolfpack!

Our invitation to join the Pack is extended to your student and your entire family. We are here to support Pack parents and families as you support your student through their transition to NC State. The weeks and months ahead will be both busy and exciting!

We hope you find this resource helpful as you and your student navigate the journey from admission to attending NC State.

Before Your Student Confirms Their Enrollment, They Should:

Apply for Scholarships

Students can apply for scholarships through the Pack ASSIST portal. Priority consideration is given to students who apply for scholarships by our priority deadline of February 15. Visit go.ncsu.edu/ financialaid for more Information

Complete the University Housing Application (Required for First-Years)

Living on campus is an essential part of the Wolfpack experience: that’s why students are required to live in University Housing their first year. Students can explore the various community living options available to them and submit their housing application at go.ncsu.edu/apply-housing.

Attend an Admitted Student Event

Newly admitted students and their families are invited to experience what life as an NC State student will be like at several admitted student events, both in-person and virtually, hosted throughout the spring. For event registration information, visit go.ncsu.edu/admitted-event.

Confirm Enrollment by May 1

Encourage your student to join the Pack via wolfpaw.ncsu.edu by the enrollment confirmation deadline, May 1. Ensure all final materials are submitted to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Have your student regularly check their wolfPAW account for any missing items.

This is just the start of your admitted student’s next steps! Our full New Student Checklist is available at go.ncsu.edu/checklist.

Next Steps After Your Student Confirms Enrollment

Share Calendars and Communication

Set aside time during the summer, weekly or biweekly, to check in with your student about fall planning and connect regarding updates your student has received from the university. Having a shared calendar for essential dates helps you and your student stay on track. Remind your student to check their university email regularly throughout the summer and utilize this time to have key conversations about expectations, anxieties and preparations.

Network with other NC State Parents and Families

NC State’s Pack Family Regions program boasts an exciting networking opportunity for NC State parents and families to connect and build community with other families in their region. This program offers a variety of year-round events, from Summer Send-Off events to welcoming new students to tailgate events, watch parties and even a regional round-up newsletter. Go online to go.ncsu.edu/pfspackfamilyregions to learn more and sign up at go.ncsu.edu/regions today.

Make Plans to Attend New Student and Family Orientation

While your student attends their college orientation, we invite parents and families to attend a concurrent orientation to learn more about campus life at NC State. There is no additional cost to attend, and families can register when their student does. Visit go.ncsu.edu/ orientation to learn more.

Nurture the Adult in Your Student

Encourage students to practice adult responsibilities over the summer months. Review and remind them of the necessary life skills, such as laundry, cooking, cleaning, hygiene and budgeting.

Connect with Parents and Families Services

Pack parents and families are encouraged to connect with the Office of Parents and Families Services (PFS) at families.ncsu.edu for helpful resources, special events and communications.

Understand the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

FERPA limits NC State’s ability to share information from student records with anyone other than the student. In order for parents to have access, they must create a Brickyard account. To learn more visit go.ncsu.edu/ferpa-info.

Prioritize Health and Wellness

Make sure your student completes all immunizations and documentation for Campus Health. If needed, help them submit the required documentation accommodations with the Disability Resource Office. Help your student transfer their prescriptions to the on-campus pharmacy and acquire 1-3 months of maintenance medications. Lastly, prepare a small first aid kit with essential medicines and necessities to keep on hand for them. For more information on Campus Health, visit go.ncsu.edu/see-campushealth.

Become Move-In Ready

Moving your student into their residence hall is an exciting and emotional time. Encourage your student to connect with their roommate before moving in (to avoid duplicates of everything) and carefully review the checklist of items to bring and the instructions for move-in provided by University Housing. Lastly, discuss an exit strategy and plan for an early goodbye, but give yourself a buffer if your student wants a bit more time.

Attend Parents and Families Weekend

The Office of Parents and Families Services is proud to provide parents with special opportunities that invite families to campus to experience many of NC State’s time-honored traditions alongside their favorite Wolfpack student. Save the date and learn more at go.ncsu.edu/parents-and-families
