Design Programs Programs Programs Programs Programs Programs Programs
I’ll start by saying that I think Gerstner’s Programmes are really fascinating. I went online and found some really cool examples of programs like his used in practice. For example the MIT Media Lab logos over the years. They developed a grid from which they can create countless new logos for every department, paper and new initiative the lab creates. When the logos are created on this pixel-like grid, they all fit into the established look and feel of the main logo. This reminded me of Denise’s 5 Pixel Glyphs.
Looking at some blogs online I found more excerpts and concepts from Gerstner’s book. One of my favorites was a 3x3 table of phrases that could be combined in any order to create a nice poem. Tools like this are not only useful for design but can be applied to a myriad of other disciplines like poetry, music, joke-writing, and painting. Sometimes being creative is a frustrating and fruitless endeavor, if you can fall back on a programme like one of these you can relieve some of that frustration.

I don’t know how well this actually works. But when you consider that there aren’t any rules to poetry then any collection of phrases would work here.

So I titled this essay: “Design Programs and their limitations” to be sort of conspicuous. There aren’t really limitations to these programs but rather I don’t think every situation calls for the use of a program. In my opinion designing with the eye and randomness rather than a pixel perfect grid system or program can be equally as effective for a totally different reason. Having both of these options in your toolbox is incredibly useful.
