What does ‘Bringing Back the Pack’ mean to you? Sara Awad Assistant Features Editor

Contestants participating in this year’s Instagram video competition will have 15 seconds to show what “Bringing Back the Pack” means to them. As part of the Homecoming Week spirit competition, participating organizations will make Instagram videos that incorporate the Homecoming theme while tying it back to their respective organizations, according to Homecoming Spirit Chair and junior in accounting Tristan Gales. Last year’s entries included Harlem Shake parodies and a vis-

it to UNC-Chapel Hill, which featured a funny interaction with the Tar Heels’ mascot in honor of last year’s Homecoming game, according to codirector of Homecoming and junior in accounting Anna Sossaman. “They’re all really short, and they all do something different,” Sossaman said. The Alumni Association Student Ambassador Program will receive the video entries this Monday, post them to its Twitter account (@ncsuhomecoming) and tag their Twitter handles for students to view, Gales said. To win, the video must receive the most points

based on retweets and faculty judges’ scoring, according to Gales. Last year, Sossaman said A ASAP only based the winner off of the number of retweets,

“I really like the idea of Instagram and Twitter ... raising awareness about homecoming,” Gabby Rodriguez, junior in business administration

which AASAP felt failed to

pick the truly best video. “I think that will make it more fair to do it half of the judge’s panel and half of the retweets,” said Gabby Rodriguez, a participant in the competition and junior in business administration. Sossaman came up with the idea for the competition last year after seeing how much time students spend on social media. “My idea was to do this video because I think it’s cool to incorporate or to make the videos, and I think it’s really cool to see, and just with social media, so much more of that is becoming a part of our everyday life,” Sossaman

said. “Just using that the Instagram video last year actually really increased followers on our Twitter account and different accounts that we have, and it helped spread the word.” Because of the retweets from people such as Scotty McCreery, sororities and fraternities, the videos reached other schools around the area, according to Sossaman. “A lot of people were aware of it, and that was just the first year, so we’re really excited to see what’s going to happen this year and how far it will spread out,” Sossaman said. Rodriguez said her sorority, Kappa Delta, partnered

with Theta Pi last year to do a patriotic-themed video in which they raised the American flag over the back porch of their sorority house with a Tim McGraw song playing in the background. For this year’s video, Rodriguez said her and her sorority utilized more of campus and partnered with Phi Kappa Phi. “I think we worked really hard, and I think our video and our float will definitely show that we love Homecoming,” Rodriguez said. Part of that hard work involved filming earlier to avoid scheduling problems

they faced last year. Editing with iMovie also proved time-consuming, according to Rodriguez. However, Rodriguez said the effort put into the video was worth it. “I really like the idea of Instagram and Twitter informing more and raising awareness about homecoming to people who may not be participating,” Rodriguez said. A ASA P w i l l a nnounce the winner of the competition Nov. 7 during the music festival following the Homecoming Parade, according to Gales.

BRANDON 2014-2015 LEADER OF THE HONEYCUTT PACK FINALISTS Leader of the Pack finalists are selected based on grade-point average, a personal interview, extracurricular activities, essays about their leadership and service experiences and student-body vote. The Leader of the Pack winner is announced at the homecoming football game and awarded a $2,000 scholarship. Students are eligible to apply if they have completed two semesters at NC State at the time of application and have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater. Applicants must also have no academic integrity probation or disciplinary probation on their records. “They are looking for someone who can unite the campus,” said Austin Bath, current Leader of the Pack and senior in biological sciences. “Our university is diverse, and this person should represent a broad spectrum of people and interests.”

junior, agricultural business management 1) What extracurricular activities you are involved with? Park Scholar, committee member and now Executive Director of Krispy Kreme Challenge 2) How do you think you have made an impact at NC State? With the Krispy Kreme challenge, I’ve helped further NC State’s reputation as a service-oriented institution. We have continued to push to best serve the university, get people involved on campus and get the message out about the children’s hospital. Last year we raised $200,000. That’s my way to give back and also further this university’s reputation. 3) Why do you think you’re the best candidate for Leader of the Pack? I think I would make the most of my experiences to represent NC State. This past summer I traveled to [Washington] D.C. to work on Capitol Hill. I had the opportunity to learn how to represent the university on a national scale. Taking those experiences, the things I have done with the Park Scholarship class and

the Krispy Kreme challenge to represent this school, I think I could continue to do a good job with it. It would be an honor I would not take lightly. 4) What is your favorite tradition at NC State? Oh, it’s the Krispy Kreme Challenge! Where else would you have kids who would run 2.5 miles, eat a dozen donuts and run back all in the name of charity? 6) What is your favorite book? Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

outside the classroom. Whether through leadership roles or positions that give back to the university, I think I embody what it really means to be an active college student at NCSU. 4) What is your favorite tradition at NC State? Though it may seem simple, I love it when the Bell Tower glows red. There is not a more beautiful sight! 5) What is your favorite book? All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot. Fantastic read for animal lovers, especially aspiring veterinarians.

Many of my roles on campus, from hall council to being an RA and now IRC, have focused on creating high-quality programs. These programs let students learn, think, play and socialize. I have strived to make all programs have a deeper value; they’re not just free activities and food. State offers so many resources and ideas, and programming is a great way to showcase them and get students involved. 3) Why do you think you’re the best candidate for Leader of the Pack? I believe I balance scholarship, leadership and service very well. Yes, we are in college to get a degree, but I think it is just as important to really make the best of our four years here

Much of what I’ve done on campus hasn’t resulted in something tangible, per se. Instead, I’ve found that my greatest impact has been in the lives and projects of the individuals I’ve had the privilege of serving alongside. As a student leader, and especially as president of multiple organizations, my goal has always been to help those

around me discover their passions and join them with the needs of the greater community. Not like that’s at all easy, but, for me, it’s what really matters at the end of the day. 3) Why do you think you’re the best candidate for Leader of the Pack? I believe I’m the best candidate for Leader of the Pack because I’m interested in much more than tangible outcomes. I strive to make a profound impact on the culture here at State, promoting curiosity, creativity and empathetic dialogue as the core values of what it means to be part of the Wolfpack. 4) What is your favorite tradition at NC State? My favorite tradition at State is tied between two soon-to-be traditions: Packapalooza and Run. Dance. Glow. Both are great examples of what can happen when the university comes together to produce something greater than itself. 5) What is your favorite book? Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed

tion of companies and students to record highs through the biannual Engineering Career Fair. Additionally, I just love being a part of the Pack and genuinely feel I’ve made an impact cheering for NC State from the front rows of every sporting event I can attend. My academic work, through both internships and undergraduate research, has also helped to advance our university in the fields of alternative fuels and renewable energy. I am very fortunate to be at NC State and try to be a servant leader in as many ways as possible. 3) Why do you think you’re the best candidate for Leader of the Pack? Austin Bath, last year’s Leader of the Pack recently stated in the Nubian Message, “They (the Leader of the Pack) should represent the university as a whole since there are people from all different walks of life,” and I firmly believe that my diverse involvement in scholarship, leadership and service while on campus is indicative of this mission. I am very grateful to have lived in the Global and Eco-Villages in my first two years, be working to thwart food insecurity on campus with Feed the Pack Food Pantry and give back to the college which has done so much for me through coordinating the Engineering Career Fair. There are many leaders in this Pack, but I believe that a vote for me is one that represents the variety of passions in the entire NC State community.

I think there are many ways I have made an impact at NC State, both on and off campus. I participate in various community service events that include working with kids and serving others. Every day I just strive to impact my peers by being a good person and a good teammate hoping to make everything better. 3) Why do you think you’re the best candidate for Leader of the Pack? I think I’m the best candidate for Leader of the Pack because I try to give back to the community as much as possible. As a student-athlete I have been given many opportunities to be a leader and a role model and I always want to portray myself in a positive way. Win or lose, I know the players, band and fans have played, screamed and cheered their hearts out, and there’s no moment where I’m more proud to be a part of the Pack then when “...our hearts ever hold you, NC State, in the folds of our love and pride” echoes from the voices of 55,000 of my closest friends. 5) What is your favorite book?
