GOOD SCHOOLS REPORT
W
ith a Grade 9 school exit plan on the cards to help address unemployment, and talk of history becoming a compulsory matric subject to counter xenophobia and other events considered problematic by the government (like the defacing of statues), there’s much change afoot in our education sector. Macro-trends like these aside, innovations in the sector include the increasing use of technology in classrooms, as our opening feature
shows. In Gauteng, ebooks are being touted as a panacea for the notorious logistical problems in SA regarding textbook delivery to public schools. Prof Jonathan Jansen tells us that as methods of teaching and learning continually evolve, the risk facing SA is the potential for under-resourced schools to fall behind, especially given our already widely divergent system of education. But as a parent, no doubt with a cap on household spending, you’ll be happy to know that many options exist for you – across both the public and private spheres. We’ve tried to distill these choices an accessible way into our annual Good Schools Report, honing in on issues like curricula, diversity and extramural options, in addition to core considerations regarding academic excellence. Here’s hoping you find an ideal fit for your child. SHEENA ADAMS Deputy Editor
Employment is arguably the greatest challenge facing SA. If more citizens find jobs, there’ll be less poverty and crime, as well as more taxpayers and a growth in spending power. To prosper, SA urgently needs to upgrade the quality of its education. Old Mutual has always taken its social responsibility seriously by supporting the communities in which we operate. One of our most exciting and innovative interventions is the R1,2 billion Schools Fund, which finances the expansion and infrastructure of independent, low-fee-paying schools to achieve quality education. We’ve partnered with E-classroom to deliver free resource support workbooks for teachers and pupils in Grades 3-7 with the newly implemented Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements. These workbooks are available free of charge online at: www.e-classroom.co.za As pressing as the need for collective action is, individuals must also be proactive by starting to save for their children’s education from the day they’re born. In the famous words of our revered late President Nelson Mandela: “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” Old Mutual believes good-quality education lays the foundation for our children to do great things and enables parents to create positive futures for them. We’re therefore proud to bring you this issue’s annual Good Schools Report – in association with DESTINY. NTOMBEKHAYA TISANI Head of Marketing, Retail Affluent: Old Mutual

DON’T WAIT:
INNOVATE We look at what’s happening in South African schools, which are fast becoming wifi hotspots where smartphones, whiteboards, tablets and other digital tools are changing the face of modern learning Written by Gillian Klawansky

n compiling this year’s Good Schools Report, many of the schools we spoke to, both private and public, mentioned digital innovations such as iPad learning, wireless connectivity and technological upgrades to media centres and classrooms. Taking their cue from international education trends, top SA schools are implementing new technologies. “Methods of teaching and learning are changing at a fast pace and any nation that doesn’t optimally use the new technologies will fall behind quickly,” says Prof Jonathan Jansen, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Free State. Yet he argues that such innovation isn’t happening quickly enough in SA, only reaching the privileged few. “We have two systems: one that works and evolves for 20% of our children in which qualified teachers,
computer-based technologies and innovation marks daily learning and teaching, and another one for 80% of our children, in which the most basic material conditions aren’t met, such as decent classroom infrastructure and textbooks for every subject,” he says. “What’s needed to change this is effective leadership at all levels of the school system.” Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi sees government-aided innovation as the key to overcoming such hurdles. Through building paperless schools, he argues, ebooks will replace textbooks, alleviating omnipresent logistical challenges. The Gauteng Department of Education is leading the way through a pilot elearning project. “The way 21st-century teaching and learning are delivered is evolving,” says Lesufi. “ICTs have proven to be the sustainable ways of
transforming future education. The elearning strategy involves five critical pillars: connectivity, econtent, infrastructure, capacity-building, and maintenance and support. Continuous training is being provided to educators to support and enhance their utilisation of ICTs.” Should the model be successful in Gauteng, it will be rolled out across the country.
SCHOOLS SPEAK
Despite the challenges facing them, South African schools are adapting to implementing educational innovations, especially through blended learning. “Leading schools enable formal instruction to take place after hours on accessible platforms so that in-class time is used for discussions of complex problems, rather than simple didactic teaching time – a flipped classroom,” says Jansen.
According to Jonathan Manley, Principal of private school St Mary’s DSG Kloof, technological innovations are changing the face of education. “Teachers can harness tremendous energy when incorporating the collective input of groups through technology. Peer review, support and moderation have enormous value in the modern classroom. The incorporation of technology in modern learning programmes can be as significant as the printing press was to education generations ago,” he says. Blended learning is a priority. “Flipped lessons using both videos and conventional ‘chalk and talk’ lessons take place. Group work is done face-to-face in the classroom, as well as virtually, with pupils collaborating in a shared digital space in a Google document or on a Wiki-space. Feedback after events is given in groups, but also anonymously on a Google Form or on a site like Padlet [a free online bulletin board where teachers and pupils can brainstorm ideas]. WhatsApp groups also allow classes to work together,” says Manley. “New computer programs are linked to the shift to the collection of Google apps that are available to us as a Google school,” says Manley. “We use the Google portal as a central point in our strategy. Our pupils move from tablets to desktops to phones throughout the day, without losing access to their documents.” Traditional learning methods are still widely used. “Teachers must know that they can trust their own judgement and structure their programmes as they fine-tune their plans,” he adds. “They now have more opportunities to engage with their pupils. It’s been daunting as well, though, as teachers have to be clearer regarding boundaries, appropriate usage of technology and their focus. Technology’s not a gimmick – while it can be a distraction, it can also be a gamechanger for pupils who are disciplined and prepared to explore possibilities.” Johannesburg-based St John’s College is part of the International Boys’ School Coalition, a USA-founded NGO dedicated to the tuition of boys worldwide, enabling direct exposure to international schools and access to some of the best minds in education. “Many staff members have
done training, support and collaborative projects with teachers across the globe,” says the school’s Deputy Headmaster, Robert Long. New teaching methods using visual literacy and visual learning, as well as technology, have resulted from these international influences. “South African schools aren’t quite as well resourced as their counterparts in the USA, so we have to work a lot smarter with what we have. Not all innovations are a result of international trends,” adds Long. Instead of implementing an iPad policy, St John’s encourages pupils to use their smartphones to access the information they need, which is where the school anticipates things are headed. Pupils scan barcodes in textbooks to open video discussions and the school web noodle allows them to access the information they miss if they’re absent. For project-based work, kids can email work to teachers and get ongoing feedback. For teachers, adapting to technological innovations has required a mindset shift, “There are numerous workshops and ongoing support for those who are familiar with these technologies,” says Long. “The response has been positive, especially when teachers see the impact of new methods.” According to Long, one of the primary values of using technology in classrooms is that it allows schools to “teach pupils in a language they understand”. Yet he emphasises the enduring relevance of teacher-pupil relationships. “Technology isn’t the only teaching tool – it’s just a new one. One of the drawbacks among pupils is the temptation to find quick-fix solutions, so this needs to be addressed. Research tells us that relationships are still the most important ingredient in good teaching.” Innovation also lends itself to educational outreach projects. “Our science department runs a technologybased programme where lessons are streamed into rural schools, allowing one well-trained teacher to reach multiple pupils,” says Long. Low-cost private institution Lenasia Muslim School (LMS) offers a mixture of innovative and traditional learning methods. “Pupils are no longer passive recipients of information, but active, curious onlookers who need a greater page 130 | JULY 2015
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SCHOOL Finding the right fit is essential in choosing a school for your child. Keep the following expert advice in mind:
EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST CLAIRE O’MAHONY • Know what type of curriculum you’d like your child to follow (GDE, IEB, etc). • Find out if the school’s inclusive and whether it caters for all learning needs, as well as social and emotional well-being. If your child struggles with a specific learning difficulty, are there resources such as a remedial therapist or educational psychologist within the school? • Establish whether your child’s best suited to a single-sex or co-educational school. • Decide whether the subjects offered support your child’s career or academic aspirations.
ROBERT LONG • Parents need to be realistic about their own children: there’s a school for every child. • Visit the school and soak up the atmosphere – different schools have different feels. • The ethos and values of the school must be aligned with your family’s. • Listen to your child. He or she needs to be happy in order to learn properly.
JONATHAN MANLEY • The emotional fit is crucial. Unless a child feels emotionally secure, he or she can’t learn optimally. • The school must offer programmes that appeal to the child’s strengths. Too often the focus is on addressing the child’s weaknesses, but their strengths will determine their career path and success. • Peer groups influence children more than their teachers do in the teen years, so judge a school by its student population’s behaviour and achievements. Gossip can skew perceptions, though, so find the “good news” stories out too.

stimulus which can be fostered by encouraging critical thinking,” says its Principal, Rashid Mohamed. Teaching tools at LMS include the Mimio, which maths teachers use to facilitate the drawing of diagrams, and digital projectors that can be used as interactive teaching devices. “The use of blended learning methods has changed the way pupils
learn, allowing them to do a lot more in less time and keeping them motivated and excited,” says Mohamed. “They can develop problem-solving skills and look for new tools to do things differently – that’s really transformational.” While teachers, especially those who are newly qualified, are excited about such innovations, proper training is essential, he adds, “otherwise we run the risk of educators becoming mediators who simply point to an app and tell pupils to complete a task. Despite technology in education, nothing can replace the warmth and passion of a committed teacher.” While public schools may lack the resources of private ones, there’s an emphasis on technology in line with government initiatives. For Gautengbased school Randfontein High, mainly serving children in surrounding townships, its consistent 100% pass rate is largely due to its emphasis on innovation. This year, it’s become 100% digital: all the pupils have iPads and the entire school is wifi-enabled, the realisation of a vision formulated last year after extensive research of ICT at independent and public schools. “While every child received textbooks this year, most parents purchased iPads and we have 40 tablets from the Gauteng Education Department as a back-up,” says Jason Fisher, an English teacher and Senior Digital Manager at the school. Children download work from the school’s intranet. Aside from the benefits of reduced paper usage,
the new teaching and learning methods have seen improved marks, in line with the school’s goal of attaining an 80% university entrance pass rate. Equally innovative in its staff structure, Randfontein makes teachers managers of particular subject portfolios, thereby limiting micro-management.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS
With innovation come increased costs. “Yet the best technologies – such as cellphones – aren’t expensive and the mix of government support and privatesector investment should limit the impact on tuition fees, since the exploitation of these technologies in the early grades has social and economic benefits beyond the individual pupil,” says Jansen. Most schools emphasise long-term savings that come from the initial technological outlay. “We monitor the budget very page 132 | JULY 2015
carefully and don’t rush into acquiring new technology,” says Chris Thomas, Headmaster of public school St Andrew’s in Bloemfontein. “It’s hoped that after the initial outlay on wifi and tablets, the school will actually save money, with tablets being more cost-effective than textbooks.” “Reliable, high-speed bandwidth is crucial – schools need to budget accordingly and transform their campuses to wifi zones,” says Manley. “The resulting maintenance of this infrastructure is also a cost factor. Ongoing training for teachers is essential – a cost that’s often left out of planning and is probably the single biggest cause of new learning programmes failing.” “Parents are under strain at the moment, so one has to be really careful in upping fees,” adds Long. “These increases are inevitable, but parents are amenable if they know the money’s going to the right areas.”

START SAVING FOR YOUR CHILD’S FUTURE
Parents are under increasing financial pressure, as education inflation rose to 9% this year, compared with 9% in previous years. The central bank forecast inflation for the year at an average of 4,8%. The case for forward planning and saving for education is strong. With education inflation outstripping most salary increases for the foreseeable future, school fees will be taking an increasingly huge chunk out of your monthly salary. “We all want the best for our children – and that means giving them a good education. Speak to your financial advisor and start saving from today,” says Jean Minnaar, Investment Manager at Old Mutual.

OLD MUTUAL TIP
INVESTMENT VEHICLES TO SAVE FOR EDUCATION UNIT TRUSTS Many people choose unit trusts for long-term investments with more choice and a specific focus on beating the rate of education inflation, which is higher than normal inflation. “Unit trust investments offer flexibility and access to your funds. However, you need to be disciplined and avoid the temptation of dipping into them,” advises Jean Minnaar, Investment Manager at Old Mutual.
SAVINGS POLICIES These are fixed for certain periods – say, five to 15 years, depending on when your child will start school or university. You can either pay fixed monthly premiums or make a lump sum payment into the policy. You have limited access to the savings, which are generally invested in a wider range of the leading unit trust funds of your choice. You can also invest in certain life funds (available only from life insurance companies) that offer minimum guarantees.
TAX-FREE SAVINGS To encourage savings in SA, the government’s introduced a new savings vehicle in terms of which any interest, dividends or capital gains are taxfree. South Africans can save up to R30 000 a year or R500 000 over their lifetime into these taxfree savings accounts. They can withdraw these savings at any time without disinvestment charges, other than a transaction fee.
