Message from the Head of School

Dear Notre Dame Friends,

Welcome to the Fall Issue of Visions where you will see the many ways that the ND community is thriving, serving, and excelling. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you for your generous support. Your gifts provide our students, faculty, and staff with the resources needed for excellent academics, diverse extracurriculars including service trips, competitive athletics, individualized research, field trips, and outstanding arts opportunities in dance, choral and instrumental, and visual. Our students find a purpose and their voice to confidently make a difference both inside and outside the gates.

Guided by Hallmarks of a Notre Dame de Namur learning community, inspired by our foundress, St. Julie, and her charge to see the goodness in each person, we focus this year on Hallmark 7: “We develop holistic learning communities that educate for life.” Our girls learn, pray, engage, and explore growing intellectually, spiritually, and personally. As you flip through the pages of Visions, you will witness our students embodying this Hallmark.

Notre Dame invites you to engage with us whether you are a parent, alumnae, friend, or student. Come visit our campus, see us in action, and celebrate our amazing community. In this issue, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of our dance program. This milestone highlights how a small group of dedicated students and faculty can create a nationally recognized program, providing girls with opportunities to pursue their passions, challenge themselves, and find joy with their dance sisters.

Congratulations to all of our ND dancers, past and present! Pursuing a passion with people who care deeply is the gift of an excellent school and compassionate educators.

Thank you once again for your support. Enjoy this look into our vibrant ND community.

In peace,

HALLMARK SEVEN

WE DEVELOP HOLISTIC LEARNING COMMUNITIES THAT EDUCATE FOR LIFE.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school, commits itself to the education of young women in grades 6 through 12 for responsible living in a global society. The Academy, rooted in the faith tradition of the Catholic Church and the charism of Saint Julie Billiart, provides its students with a challenging academic curriculum within a rich spiritual community in order to:

• inspire them to live the prophetic nature of the gospel, with a passion for justice and love for the poor

• enable them to develop the skills and desire necessary for lifelong learning

• empower them to be honorable, compassionate leaders

Dr. Laura M. Hotchkiss

20 Years of Dance

WHAT STARTED AS A CLUB THAT WOULD MEET DURING COMMUNITY TIME WHERE STUDENTS WOULD MAKE UP THEIR OWN DANCES, HAS TRANSFORMED INTO AN AWARD-WINNING DANCE PROGRAM THAT HAS CHANGED THE LIVES OF STUDENTS FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS.

Pam Devenney P’16 began her tenure at the Academy of Notre Dame in 2004 as a health and physical education teacher.

Having already done it twice at her previous school district in Maryland, Devenney was brought on by Notre Dame to build dance as a curriculum into the health and physical education department.

Meanwhile, math teacher Dolores Sajeski had been moderating the dance club looking for someone to take it and turn it into the program she knew it could be.

“Pam was literally the answer to a prayer. I was praying a miracle would occur - Pam was that miracle!” Sajeski said.

Up until that point, students were meeting during Community Time in Cuvilly Gymnasium making up their own routines.

at Notre Dame

Sajeski approached Devenney who did not think twice about taking leadership of the club.

“She [Devenney] had a dance background, tons of energy, and unbelievable creativity. Everything I could have hoped for and more,” Sajeski said.

Sajeski stayed on and helped Devenney in her early years, recalling memories of when it was just her and Devenny in a “big Suburban” driving students to and from competitions up and down the East Coast.

In 2004, Devenney officially established the Notre Dame Dance Company. With less than ten dancers, the Company would meet when students were free and only performed at a handful of school events.

For years, the Company moved around campus with no dedicated place to call their own.

From Fitzgerald Fieldhouse at Launfal to Bascome-Trexler, the Company was moving from building to building performing on carpet and cement floors without any air conditioning.

20 Years of Dance at Notre Dame

“Each move was a step in the right direction. The school supported the dance program and their efforts to find us a dedicated space proved it,” Devenney said.

In the fall of 2016, then Head of School Dr. Judith Dwyer revitalized the recital hall in the Connelly Arts building with a collegiate-level dedicated space for the Company.

With Middle School and Upper School Dance Companies as well as other courses offered to students, Devenney was off to the races. The Academy would be forever changed.

In the fall of 2022, Alexa Chambers ’09 came back to the Academy to direct alongside her former teacher in what she calls a fullcircle moment.

“It is really cool to go from student to now teacher and give back to Notre Dame what they gave to me,” Chambers said.

Devenney sees the long-term benefits to the well-being of students who take her classes.

“We have to create a safe space so students can be brave and take chances. You have to feel safe to be able to be brave in dance,” Devenny said.

For Devenney, it is important that her students understand that they will make mistakes, that there is no perfection in dance, and that the same is true in life.

Devenney and Chambers pride themselves in leading a program that welcomes dancers no matter their skill level or years of experience.

Chambers said there is joy in the everyday teaching, but there is an indescribable feeling when you see the spark in a student’s eye when they nail choreography for the first timeit is a happiness unlike any other.

“I wake up every morning and think - I get paid to be part of these students’ lives in a way nobody else does,” Devenney said.

20 Years of Dance at Notre Dame

The studio is a place where Devenney encourages her students to put aside their stress and problem-solve in a different way than they might in a traditional classroom.

When working with her students, Devenney pushes them to not give her the problem but to give her the solution.

Devenney said that she teaches her students to be creative problem solvers.

In a competitive industry and just twenty years of the Dance Company, thirty percent of Devenney’s students have continued their careers in the arts.

Being able to give students the space to build their confidence at such an important age is a privilege for Devenney and Chambers.

Chambers said that she and Devenney channel Hallmark Seven in their classes which then allows students to discover who they are in a safe space and carry that confidence beyond the Gates.

SEVEN

WE DEVELOP HOLISTIC LEARNING COMMUNITIES THAT EDUCATE FOR LIFE.

As for her hopes for the future, Devenney wants the program to continue to be a place where all students are welcome - no matter their experience level.

“If I make an incredible dancer, I am happy. If I make an incredible person who can handle what life throws at them and be empathetic, then I have done my true job as an educator.”

A Timeless Connection: Two

Women Celebrate 80 Years of Friendship and Shared Memories at the Academy

The sisterhood at Notre Dame is what makes the Academy a special and unique place. Students support one another through life together within the gates and those bonds made last a lifetime.

While McGann started her time at Notre Dame in Philadelphia at The Square, it did not take long for the pair to find each other when the Academy moved to Villanova.

“It was exciting meeting people from different areas who were all coming together when the school moved to Villanova,” Flatley said.

When asked about what life was like at Notre Dame all those years ago, both Flatley and McGann chuckled recalling the amount of homework.

“We had a lot of homework that the Sisters would assign –but we needed it!” McGann said.

The class sizes were small at that time which allowed the students to become a tight-knit group. While they had high expectations, Flatley said that push from the Sisters is what opened a lot of avenues for students when they graduated.

All-girls schools are known for their strong traditions and Notre Dame is no exception.

Still to this day, Upper School students are connected with incoming freshman or Middle School students to be a guide in their first year at Notre Dame.

Something that has stuck with both ladies all these years is how unique the uniforms were.

“We had a funny little uniform with a cape - I don’t know who designed that.” Flatley chuckled.

Both McGann and Flatley have had family members follow in their footsteps and attend Notre Dame. Flatley’s granddaughter Kristen Bandos ’12 sat in on the interview and shared how special it was when they got to attend a reunion together.

As for words of advice for current students, Flatley said, “Get involved as much as you can – it enriches your whole experience.”

With a sisterhood spanning eighty years, Flatley said that support gets you through the happy times and difficult times.

“You travel that road together and get energy and strength from one another,” Flatley said adding that, “Notre Dame was and still is a special place.”

Faculty Spotlights

Math and science are made up of objective facts: two plus two will always equal four. Water molecules are always made of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. It’s easy to see why STEM might have a reputation for being somewhat rigid, but that’s not the case at Notre Dame. STEM department chairs Michele Forsyth (math) and Kate McTiernan (science) are as warm and devoted as they come. During their joint interview, both stated multiple times, “I am happiest when I’m with the students.”

“ ”
When teaching your subject is your passion, and you love the students, and you love your colleagues, and you love the community…it all comes together as one. I don’t look at it as coming to teach math. I look at it as coming to be a part of the Notre Dame community, and I’m grateful that I am part of that community because it has made me a better person.
- MICHELE

Michele Forsyth

Forsyth began teaching at Notre Dame in 2005, but her journey with the school started much earlier. Her father, a college professor, recognized her love of math at a young age and enrolled her at the Academy for Middle School.

“He put me in a single-sex environment from 6th through 12th grade because he didn’t want me to feel that the boys were better than I was,” Forsyth said. “He wanted me to be confident in what I was doing.”

Forsyth began her teaching career at the university level. When Sister Anne McDonald retired, Forsyth took over for her teaching 6th grade math. It wasn’t a planned switch, but it felt like the perfect move.

Now it has been 19 years of teaching Middle School, reaching those students at the perfect age and subject, and she loves it.

“I like the other maths, but I love teaching algebra. I love being part of laying the foundation for everything they’re going to learn in math, and I want it to be a very strong foundation so they’ll be successful when they move forward.”

Like McTiernan, she had a teacher who influenced her. Forsyth remembers her freshman year of high school when a teacher recognized her abilities and encouraged her to tutor her fellow students. She immediately fell in love with the process of teaching.

“I think that tutoring just made me see that I love showing people how to do something. It started when I was just helping classmates and schoolmates, and I realized I really like doing this.”

For her, the most important thing is making sure the girls come into the classroom and love what they’re doing. She wants them to enjoy the subject and explore their curiosity, and that’s what makes her happy.

“I don’t get tired from question after question. It’s all a big learning experience for both of us. There has never been a time when I regretted what I was doing, and I’ve been a teacher all my life. I have never regretted that.”

Forsyth went on to share, “I want to instill the love of math in them all - just as much as I love math. Even my own kids say, ’Mom, you’re so weird,’ but I do love it! And that’s why we’re teachers in our fields. We have a passion for it.”

Kate McTiernan

McTiernan first started at Notre Dame in the late 1990s under Sister Regina. She was newly married and had just changed careers from cancer research to education.

“I loved the research, I loved the science, but I didn’t like being isolated in a lab.”

She was soon pregnant and left after her first year to stay at home with her children. After five years, McTiernan started working in an Archdiocesan school teaching Middle School science, but she always kept an eye open for opportunities at Notre Dame. Ten years ago, a position opened up.

“When the opportunity arose, I jumped at it. I love the campus. I love the people. I love an all-girls school.”

Her passion for science started when she was little, and it only grew over time.

“My high school biology teacher was a Sister of Saint Joseph who made me realize everything that was out there with science and research. It just put a spark in me.”

McTiernan absolutely loves teaching Middle School. Each year, she starts with a simple question to her class - how many of you do not like science? When she receives the girls’ answers, McTiernan assures those students who do not have a positive response that they will grow to enjoy the lab and find that part of science that excites them.

“I want students to be comfortable instead of scared, to know that they can do science and that STEM is for girls.”

Middle School is a time when students are growing academically and emotionally. “Seeing that maturity and grace and intelligence as they go through high school - it’s like bookends,” she says. “It’s wonderful to see where they start and where they end. I love it.”

McTiernan concludes, “I think back to the teachers that influenced me whether they knew it or not and that’s why I love to be here, why we’re all here: to prepare these girls for everything that’s out there and to know that you can be that voice.”

The Notre Dame family, the community, the connection – the Sisters of Notre Dame really laid that foundation. I think back to when I started, and had totally changed careers. And Sister Regina, with that quiet presence about her, wouldn’t have hired me if she didn’t think I could do it. All those years ago, I just remembered that was a big turning point, and it was the Sisters of Notre Dame and this community who welcomed me. Here I was, this new teacher, and I knew it was where I was supposed to be.

“ ”

Reflecting on their collegial partnership in STEM, McTiernan notes that “Here at Notre Dame, we support each other. We laugh together. We cry together. Most of all, it’s about the students. ”

Forsyth continues, “You go into the classroom, you close your door, and life is fine. Life is good.” McTiernan nods. “And that’s it. That’s what makes it all worthwhile.”

SISTERS OF NOTRE DAME LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE: BOSTON

Five of our Red ’25 Class Leaders, Ellie Archer, Gianna Caccuitti, Temperance England, Leah Mejzak, and Mary Kate Zaffarese, spent a week at Emmanuel College in Boston attending the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Leadership Conference. This conference is an annual gathering of SND schools from across the nation. Each school spent the morning serving a different organization within the community; for ND students, this meant volunteering at Cradles to Crayons. The conference was filled with lively discussion as students reflected on their role as leaders in their school communities. Students and trip leaders also learned how to navigate the T, took in a game at Fenway, and Mrs. Fox led a historical trip through the Boston Harbor, including Old North Church and Paul Revere’s statue. Finally, no trip to Boston would be complete without a stop through Quincy Market and a cannoli from Mike’s Pastry.

EASTER BREAK TRIP TO FRANCE

Students spent their Easter Break exploring France! It was a week filled with sightseeing and delicious food. Some of the trip highlights include the catacombs, Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, the Mediterranean coast in Nice, and Monaco!

NORA MOFFAT NAMED 2024 GLOBAL EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR

ND is proud to announce that Mrs. Moffat was named 2024 Global Educator of the Year by the Global Education Benchmark Group! The award was presented at this year’s Conference in Montréal. “The ND Center for Global Leadership is more than student travel. Over the past eight years, the CGL has gone from a concept to a multi-pronged department that impacts various aspects of the student experience at Notre Dame. Through thoughtful programming and global collaborations, our students and teachers are offered myriad opportunities to develop leadership skills, global competencies, and an informed and empathetic worldview.“

ACADEMIC EXCHANGE TRIP: PERU

Seven Upper School students and two faculty members traveled to Peru after the school year ended for 13 days on our first Academic Exchange Program since the pandemic. About three months prior to departure, each student chose a topic to become the focal point of their research on the trip. Leading up to the program, they studied this topic from afar and once in-country they began researching the topic through first-hand observations, conducting interviews, and note-taking. The students each stayed with a host family from our sister school in Lima, the San Silvestre School. On other travel days the group visited historic, cultural, and artistic landmarks around the city. After Lima, the group took off to the Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest. There they took nature hikes, boat rides, and climbed a tower for a view above all of the trees. Many of the unique animal species of the rainforest were spotted as the group experienced a deeper connection with “the lungs of the planet.”

COSTA RICA

Twelve students and two trip leaders visited Costa Rica for five days in June where they had the opportunity to take part in both wellness and environment-related activities! During their trip, they visited an indigenous village on the Nicoya Peninsula, a designated “Blue Zone” and home to the Chorotega people. There they hiked to a waterfall on their property, learned of the history of the Chorotega, ate a traditional corn rice meal, and played traditional games and instruments. The group also visited an eco-park where they learned about the local production of coffee and chocolate and tried samples from the various stages of the process. Students also enjoyed some time on the beach, a day snorkeling and paddling boarding off a catamaran, and a visit to natural hot springs!

SMOKY MOUNTAINS

A group of students led by Mrs. McNulty and Ms. Smith explored the Smoky Mountains in June. Their trip included rafting, ziplining, venturing into the Tuckaleechee Caverns, stopping by the aquarium, leadership activities, and community service where they picked up 26 pounds of micro trash in the national park!

ITALY & GREECE

For over a week, 24 students and 4 chaperones traveled to Florence, Rome, Nafplio, and Athens to explore Italian and Greek art, culture, and history. Trip highlights included an Italian cooking class of pasta and tiramisu, a Greek ceramics workshop, and a zine workshop to commemorate the trip. Students (and teachers!) loved experiencing the places they’ve talked about in class, interacting with locals, forming new friendships, and making lifelong memories. A great kickoff to summer break!

Around Middle School

For their end-of-year class trip, the 6th grade visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art taking in the vibrant paintings, and sculptures, and even channeled their inner Rocky!

That’s what it means to carry the strength and spirit of Notre Dame with you. It’s impossible to be a woman of Notre Dame and not fight for equality. It’s impossible to be a woman of Notre Dame and not make a difference. Just by being you.

We are now leaving behind the place where we all experienced special moments and memories. Moving on from this place of comfort can make the future seem daunting and intimidating. But though our lives will now be different and our futures unknown, our experiences here at ND will give us strength for the future.

– Saylor Milone ’24, Valedictorian

Notre Dame is a place where we were all able to romanticize life and appreciate the little things. Being inside the gates has essentially provided all of us with a bubble. Not the kind of bubble that separates us from the real world, but one that has prepared us for it. A place that has allowed us to find comfort in discomfort. A place where we can make mistakes and not be ashamed. A place where failure isn’t a bad thing.

Academic and Distinguished Awards

At the Baccalaureate and Commencement ceremonies, Notre Dame honored students for their academic excellence and for exemplifying the Hallmarks of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. They are a living testament to the work we do each day at the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur.

Message from our Chair, Board of Trustees

I am proud to reflect on an incredible year of accomplishments, from our student athletes securing 3 InterAc championships to our Global Scholars launching a new composting initiative. These achievements, alongside service projects and sold-out theater performances, reflect the spirit and dedication of the young women of Notre Dame.

The generosity of our Notre Dame community makes this all possible. Thanks to your loyalty, the Academy is able to provide essential scholarships, develop innovative programs, enhance our campus facilities, and continue the tradition of sisterhood. The inaugural Sunflower Soiree was a resounding success and raised the necessary funds for the construction of our new outdoor classroom and Sunflower Courtyard.

Thank you, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, for being an integral and valued member of the Notre Dame community.

Sincerely,

David

We are grateful for your contributions and look forward to another inspiring year together.

The Saint Julie Society was established in 2015 to honor all who name the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur as a beneficiary of a will, trust, retirement plan, life insurance policy, life income gift, or other type of planned giving arrangement. All are welcome to join The Saint Julie Society regardless of the size of their bequest or planned gift. By becoming a member of this society, one joins the company of others in perpetuating the educational legacy of Saint Julie at Notre Dame. Please email advancement@ndapa.org for more information.

We are pleased to recognize the following individuals who have informed the Academy that they have established a planned gift arrangement to benefit Notre Dame or intend to do so, in addition to those whose request has already been gratefully received.
