THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Jeremiah Chapter 31 beginning at the 31st verse.
The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt--a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Paul’s first letter to the Hebrews Chapter 5 beginning at the 5th verse
So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. "Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say--' Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.
The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord !6
From the Rector’s Notebook: Greetings: We have completed our w e e k ’s b r e a k f r o m o u r Lenten fast and are now heading into that section of this part of the season often referred to as Greater Lent. Today is the Fifth Sunday in Lent which tells us that we are approaching Palm Sunday and Holy Week. This is a period of the liturgical and spiritual year that is precious or ought to be so for all Christians. We can hear Jesus in the Gospel narrative saying to us “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. (John 10:11) This carries the understanding that Jesus did not simply die as the helpless victim of the corrupt judicial system; but rather that he offered himself willingly for the sake of all humanity. (John 17:19) During Holy Week and Easter we are required to move beyond our usual habit of Sunday worship. As we enter the Paschal Triduum from the evening of Maundy Thursday, to the end of the Great Vigil of Easter, we will be pressed by the Holy Church to participate in the sacred liturgy by our active presence. It was on the first Maundy Thursday that our Lord gave us the Sacrament of Holy Communion and shared his Priesthood with humanity. !7
Our faith is vital for the extension of the Kingdom of God. It is the belief and practice of the faith that brings greater understanding. In other words it is by delving into the mystery of the Institution of the Lord’s Supper on Maundy Thursday, the contemplation of the crucifixion and the easter longing for the resurrected one in the Paschal Vigil that leads to a better understanding of the faith. (Luke 22- 24) There are those in the early church who risked life and limb to participate in these sacred rites and we can do so freely. Let us therefore ensure that we are all here Thursday March 29 - Saturday March 31 for the Triduum. What is being said here is fairly simple, just come out to church during Holy Week, come to the services, leave the chores for a few hours, they are not going to go away. This is a time we celebrate once a year. While is true that Jesus’ death and resurrection are recalled whenever we come to Mass; however we do not get this drama in our worship every week. May God almighty be with us as we begin our reflection on the meaning of his sacrifice for us. Your friend and priest,
Noel A. Burke, (The Rev’d Canon) Rector !8
