!THE COLLECT !Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of
darkness, and put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when He shall come again in His glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through Him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

!
READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the ! Book of Isaiah chapter 2 beginning at the 1st verse!
!
The word which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it, 3 and many peoples shall come, and say: "Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths." For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide for many

peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. 5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD.!

PSALM 122 Loetatus sum.
1. I was glad when they said to me, * "Let us go to the house of the Lord." 2. Now our feet are standing* within your gates, 0 Jerusalem. 3.
Jerusalem is built as a city* that is at unity with itself;
4. To which the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, * the
assembly of Israel, to praise the name of the Lord. 5. For there are the thrones of judgement, * the thrones of the
 house of David.
6.Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: * "May they prosper who love you.
!
7.Peace be within your walls" and quietness within your towers.
!4
! 8.For my brethren and companions' sake,* I pray for your
 prosperity.
!
9.Because of the house of the Lord our
!
God, * I will seek to do you good." Glory to the Father, and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now* and shall be forever. Amen.
!THE EPISTLE
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter of Paul to the Romans chapter 13 beginning at the 8th verse.!
!8 Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who
loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet," and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. 11 Besides this you know what hour it is, how it is full time now for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; 12 the night is far gone, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13 let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

THE HOLY GOSPEL
Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time on the Mount of Olives, Jesus said to his disciples privately, 37 As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they did not know until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one is taken and one is left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one is taken and one is left. 42 Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the householder had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:
Today is the first Sunday in Advent or as it is often called Advent Sunday. This day is tremendously significant because it marks the first Sunday of the Church's year.
!
It also sets us on a path of preparation or waiting. We are getting ready to celebrate the coming of Christ spiritually and theologically.
!
We think and pray of him coming to us to judge the world at the end of time in addition to anticipating with joy the celebration of the birth of the babe of the manger. These twin themes provide us with quite a lot on which to ponder in the short Advent season.
!
Kathleen Norris, an award-winning poet and author advises that as the season of Advent is about the second coming as well as his first, that we might ask ourselves what does it mean to pray to Emmanuel, "God with us" (Matthew 1:23).
!
It is vital that we consider this as we interact and interface with our friends, work mates, fellow students, neighbours and the human community in general.
!
Indeed within the incarnation, meaning the understanding that YAHWEH comes to us in the flesh, is the view that God seeks community with us and bids that the new community be established among us as human beings.
!
Jesus himself was born into an economically depressed world. Stories of violence and political oppression were part of the ordinary life of Joseph and Mary.
!
It was a bleak world in which large nations and institutions would have their way with those living in a small village in Galilee; yet the parents of Jesus were prepared to wait on God.
!
!7
At this Advent season again we are called upon to wait. This does not mean to sit still; but to be actively involved in community, working with hope that God will never abandon us.
!
We pray then at this time as Christmas approaches that in the midst of uncertainty, we may continually strive to be makers of peace, that we will listen to each other patiently, working for the good of our nation and for the good estate of Christ's holy Church.
