READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of 2 Samuel Chapter 23 beginning at the 1st verse Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, son of Jesse, the oracle of the man whom God exalted, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the favorite of the Strong One of Israel: The spirit of the LORD speaks through me, his word is upon my tongue. The God of Israel has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: One who rules over people justly, ruling in the fear of God, is like the light of morning, like the sun rising on a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land. Is not my house like this with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. Will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire? But the godless are all like thorns that are thrown away; for they cannot be picked up with the hand; to touch them one uses an iron bar or the shaft of a spear. And they are entirely consumed in fire on the spot. Reader: ALL:

Psalm 93 Dominus regnavit 1 The Lord is King; he has put on splendid apparel; * the Lord has put on his apparel and girded himself with strength. 2 He has made the whole world so sure * that it cannot be moved; 3 Ever since the world began, your throne has been established; * you are from everlasting. 4 The waters have lifted up, O Lord, the waters have lifted up their voice; * the waters have lifted up their pounding waves. 5 Mightier than the sound of many waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea, * mightier is the Lord who dwells on high. 6 Your testimonies are very sure, * and holiness adorns your house, O Lord, for ever and for evermore Glory to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now * and shall be forever. Amen

witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen. "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, "Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate replied, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord !5
From the Rector's Notebook Greetings: T h e f i n a l S u n d a y o f t h e L i t u r g i c a l Ye a r commemorated as the Feast of Christ the King along with the following week’s observance of the First Sunday of Advent constitute an ending and a beginning. Today’s celebration of Christ as King mark’s him as the king and center of our hearts. The author of the Revelation to John tells us that Christ having crossed over from death to life eternal and having saved us from sin and death is indeed Alpha and Omega. The Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered Revelation 5:5 In that heavenly vision the author of the Book of the Apocalypse captures the vision of the Lamb that was slain standing in the midst of the throne and heard the song of the angelic host as they sang Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” Revelation 5:12. This is the Lord and Christ whom we along with angels and the elders worship in the Divine Liturgy. He is the Lord through whom we direct our prayers when we recite the offices of Morning and Evening Prayer Daily. As we observe the end of the liturgical year the theological message is clear that endings must never cause us to despair, whether it is the loss of a job, or a loved one whether by divorce or death. !6
With God Almighty an ending is always accompanied by a beginning. The Last Sunday of the Church year will make way for First Sunday of Advent. This truth is essential for our understanding of life for the agony of Good Friday gives way to the eternal glory of Resurrection, Ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Regardless of our state of mind today, perhaps because of the uncertainty of a job loss or death let us, place our trust in the Lord God who promises joy in the morning time even if sorrow endures the night. May God’s grace and mercy rest upon us on this Feast day. And May Christ be enthroned in our hearts, homes and all of the institutions of our land as we celebrate 52 years of Independence. Happy Independence and God’s blessing as we approach the new liturgical year. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev'd Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER By SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d Last week the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), advised U.S. consumers against eating any romaine lettuce, and retailers and restaurants from serving or selling any. This was due to an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) infections linked to romaine lettuce. Unfortunately, for the past few years, we have been faced with such outbreaks. You may remember that last year’s was linked to a SoyNut butter and leafy greens. E.coli is a bacteria which is normally found in the environment and the intestines of healthy people and animals. It is important to note, that most strains are harmless but some can cause severe abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. Here are some preventative measures you can take to safeguard yourself and your family. •
Wash raw produce thoroughly under running water – take time to gently rub your vegetables or fruits. A solution of vinegar and water at a 1 to 3 ratio can help kill bacteria on the surface. Use a spray bottle to apply the vinegar solution to the produce. Wash the produce thoroughly under running water after about 30 seconds.
•
Practice proper hygiene – wash your hands thoroughly before and during the preparation of meals; after using the bathroom or changing a diaper; after playing with your pets and teach your children to do the same. In the event that no water or soap is available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. However, as soon as you can, wash your hands under running water.
•
Drink pasteurized dairy products, juices and cider
•
Cook meats thoroughly –it is always best to use a thermometer to determine the internal temperature of the meat. Be sure, don’t guess.
•
Keep raw foods separate – use separate cutting boards for raw meat and foods, such as vegetables and fruits.
