!THE COLLECT
O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Saviour Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.
!THE FIRST READING: !READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the
Acts of the Apostles Chapter 1 beginning at the 8th verse You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Sama'ria and to the end of the earth." And when he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day's journey away; and when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

THE EPISTLE
!A Reading from the Word of God written in the First Letter of Peter Chapter 4 beginning at the 12th verse.
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal which comes upon you to prove you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice in so far as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are reproached for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or a wrongdoer, or a mischief-maker; yet if one suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but under that name let him glorify God. For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? And "If the righteous man is scarcely saved, where will the impious and sinner appear?" Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will do right and entrust their souls to a faithful Creator.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you.
!
A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time when Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify thy Son that the Son may glorify thee, since thou hast given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom thou hast given him. And this is eternal life, that they know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. I glorified thee on earth, having accomplished the work which thou gavest me to do; and now, Father, glorify thou me in thy own presence with the glory which I had with thee before the world was made. "I have manifested thy name to the men whom thou gavest me out of the world; thine they were, and thou gavest them to me, and they have kept thy word. Now they know that everything that thou hast given me is from thee; for I have given them the words which thou gavest me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from thee; and they have believed that thou didst send me. I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom thou hast given me, for they are thine;
all mine are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to thee. Holy Father, keep them in thy name, which thou hast given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

From the Rector’s Desk Greetings:
!
The time between Ascension and Pentecost is considered to be a period of waiting and watching
! !
And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city, until you are clothed with power from on high." Luke 24: 49
Ascension Day occurs within the fifty day Easter Season and is a vital part of the celebration of the Paschal Mystery. We can truly sing that the head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory now. CPWI Hymnal 196
!
We have to be very careful not to isolate the mystical events in the life of Christ; but rather must make the intricate connection that links these events together.
!
For example we tend to observe Easter Day and for the most part ignore the significance of the its theological connection to Ascension Day and even the Feast of Pentecost.
!
Professor Patrick Regan would have us see Easter Day as the first of fifty days of rejoicing in the resurrection, ascension, bestowal of the Spirit, and founding of the Church, understood not as separate episodes succeeding each other in time, but as different facets of one and the same mystery of Jesus' exaltation as Lord.
!
We must not then dissociate the imposition of ashes on Ash-Wednesday at the start of Lent when we begin our preparation for the renewal of baptism vows at Easter from the paschal events in
!7
which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
!
In our parish we deem it as important to make these links for the proper understanding of the faith. Indeed it is the duty of every Christian.
!
Having this understanding of the faith will greatly assist us in our daily lives as we interact with the world.
!
We may very well find that we hold in tension both the Good Friday event with is pain and suffering with that Easter event in which our Lord is exalted and reigns in us for ever and ever.
!
As Christians we embrace the notion that the liturgy with is grounding in scripture and prayer gives us the courage to face life with the conviction that God is always at hand.
!
Let us pray that this week we spend some time in prayerful watchfulness as we prepare to celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Church in our sacred liturgy next Sunday, God willing.
! Your friend and priest, ! !

HEALTH CORNER! CONTROLLING YOUR CHOLESTEROL Last week, we learnt that too much ‘bad’ cholesterol (LDL) can lead to cardiovascular disease. Fortunately, they are ways of lowering your cholesterol and your risk of heart disease and stroke. Your situation may be such that your doctor prescribes medication to help lower your cholesterol. Whether or not this is the case, lifestyle changes are vital to improving your cholesterol levels and overall health.
GET ACTIVE! Become physically active! You can lower your cholesterol by doing 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic exercise 3 to 4 times a week. Take a friend, spouse or even a work colleague and take a brisk walk on evenings or mornings. Go dancing or riding but find something that you enjoy!
EAT FOR A HEALTHY HEART! Start following a heart-healthy diet. Modify your meals to include more fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish and low-fat dairy products. Reduce your intake of red meat and high-sugar foods. QUIT SMOKING! Yes, quit smoking because it can lower ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL) and raise the level of triglycerides (type of fat) in your blood. Cigarettes contain acrolein, a chemical compound, which is believed to interfere with the function of HDL. This results in more accumulation
of fat in the bloodstream and throughout the body. EDUCATE YOURSELF! Learn about the fats that increase ‘bad’ cholesterol levels and this will assist you in making informed decisions when grocery shopping. Pay attention to the nutrition labels on the food items that you buy. Labels are supposed to be a source of vital information and are not just for decoration. Research any words that you don’t understand by using the internet or reading books. Let’s start today to make these lifestyle changes and aim for better health!
