THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Exodus Chapter 24 beginning at the 12th verse.

The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction. So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, "Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them. Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. Reader: ALL: Psalm 2

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God. Page 471 !3

THE EPISTLE READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in 2nd Peter Chapter 1 beginning at the 16th verse.

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour. Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good !4

for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

FROM THE RECTOR’S NOTEBOOK Greetings:

The liturgical year is now taking us into the Easter Cycle with Wednesday of this week being Ash Wednesday. We leave our contemplation of how the presence of God was manifested in Christ by recalling today Jesus' majesty and supremacy which was revealed on the Mount of Transfiguration. The inner circle from among the Twelve, Peter, James and John are able to capture an image of Jesus that was new to them. His appearance altered as the author of the Gospel according to St. Matthew describes his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Matthew 17:2 Matthew goes on to say that on that occasion, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. These two are the great symbols representing respectively the law and the prophets. The disciples see Jesus in his heavenly glory. So awesome was this scene that the disciples, especially Peter would like to remain there forever, he says "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”. Matthew 17:4 One of the hymn of our tradition Hymn 461 Hymn A&M says But no! Not yet to man ’tis given !6

To rest upon that height; ’Tis but a passing glimpse of Heav’n We must descend and fight. We take the glorious vision of our transfigured and exalted Lord with us into the Lenten season. It is that sacred image of Jesus on the mountain with the salvation of humanity in his hands that gives strength and hope. We must compare and contrast theologically today's Gospel Reading with that for Sunday coming, in which we see Jesus in confrontation with Satan as our Lord is tempted in the wilderness. Such is life: a combination of mountain and wilderness, heavenly peace and earthly struggle. We leave the peace of quiet, prayer and worship to deal with sickness and disease, poverty, economic turmoil, political disagreement and the various barriers that we build against each other even along religious lines. As we go into the solemn season of Lent and as we contend with the reality of the world we do so with the presence of the Transfigured Christ in our hearts and minds. Our faith informs us that the exalted Christ in glory abides forever and that we shall see him as he is. Your friend and Priest Noel A. Burke. M.A. (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER BY: SOPHIA MARSHALL, PH.D Last week we used specific herbs to ‘spice’ up our meal. This week, here are more creative cooking tips to help reduce the use of fat as the only source of flavor in our food. ➢ Start with ¼ tsp (1ml) dry herbs or ¾ tsp (3ml) fresh herbs for a dish that serves 4 people. Fresh herbs contain more moisture with milder flavor. 3 to 4 times more fresh herbs than dried herbs will be needed. Example: 1 Tbsp (15ml) fresh herbs = 1 tsp (5ml) dried herbs. ➢ Crumble herbs between fingers to release flavor prior to adding to dish. ➢ Heat herbs in bit of oil to heighten & extend flavor. ➢ With soups, stews, & large quantity dishes, add herbs during last hour of cooking so flavor doesn’t evaporate. ➢ Store herbs in cool place in opaque container to retain flavor. Do not store near stove. ➢ Routinely replace supply of herbs. Generally ground spices retain flavor for about 6 months; herbs dry out after 4 months. ➢ Rub herb mixtures onto meats prior to cooking. ➢ Use herbs individually first and advance to blending herbs together. In this way, you can pinpoint which particular herbs enhance the flavor to your fancy. ➢ When using seasoning packages, try using only ½ package as flavors are usually too concentrated, especially in salt. Remaining amount can be used for seasonings for home-made barbecue sauces or added to meats, etc.
