THE COLLECT ! Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Saviour Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of His salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of His marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. .Amen.!

READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the ! Book of Amos chapter 3 beginning at the 1st verse!

!

Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, O people of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up out of the land of Egypt: "You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities. "Do two walk together, unless they have made an appointment? Does a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Does a young lion cry out from his den, if he has taken nothing? Does a bird fall in a snare on the earth, when there is no trap for it? Does a snare spring up from the ground, when it has taken nothing? Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does evil befall a city, unless the LORD has done it? Surely the Lord

GOD does nothing, without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared; who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken; who can but prophesy?" !

! Psalm 139: 1-11 Domine, probasti. ! 1.Lord you have searched me out and known me;* you know my sitting down and my rising up; you discern my thoughts from afar. 2.You trace my journeys and my resting-places* and are acquainted with all my ways. 3.Indeed, there is not a word on my lips,* but you, O Lord, know it altogether. 4.You press upon me behind and before* and lay your hand upon me. 5.Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;* it is so high that I cannot attain to it. 6.Where can I go then from your Spirit?* where can I flee from your presence? 7.If I climb up to heaven, you are there;* if I make the grave my bed, you are there also. 8.If I take the wings of the morning* and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, 9.Even there your hand will lead me* and your right hand hold me fast. 10.If I say, “Surely the darkness will cover me,* and the light around me turn to night,” 11.Darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day;* darkness and light to you are both alike.

THE EPISTLE! A Reading from the Word of God written in the First Letter to the Corinthians chapter1 beginning at the 10th verse.!

!

I appeal to you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chlo'e's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apol'los," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I am thankful that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Ga'ius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Steph'anas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. !

THE HOLY GOSPEL!

!

The Lord be with you! And also with you.!

!

A Reading from the Holy Gospel ! according to Matthew! Glory to Christ our Saviour.!

!

At that time when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Caper'na-um by the sea, in the territory of Zeb'ulun and Naph'tali, that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "The land of Zeb'ulun and the land of Naph'tali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles-- the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, " F o l l o w m e , a n d I w i l l m a k e y o u fi s h e r s o f men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zeb'edee and John his brother, in the boat with Zeb'edee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. And he went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.! The Gospel of Christ.! Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

!

The Anglican Church in the outline of the faith or the Catechism as we often call it says this:-

!

Q. What is the Church? A. The Church is the community of the New Covenant.

!

Q. How is the Church described in the Bible? A. The Church is described as the Body of which Jesus Christ is the Head and of which all baptized persons are members. It is called the People of God, the New Israel, a holy nation, a royal priesthood, and the pillar and ground of truth.

! Under Ministry the Cathechism states:!

Q. Who are the ministers of the Church? A. The ministers of the Church are lay persons, bishops, priests, and deacons.

!

One christian therefore with our understanding of the faith cannot ask what is the church doing since we all comprise the Body of Christ.

!

Churches and their ministers have played and must continue to play a vital role in the society helping us have that understanding that God is always with us.

!

It must be the role of the faith community to help persons to face the reality of life in a reasonable, calm and logical way with the assurance that the God of all consolation is Emmanuel.

!

!7

Every experience is an opportunity to proclaim the word of God either in word or deed.

!

When we examine the life of the people of God in biblical, times we realized that they faced very trying circumstances.

!

There were times when it was uncertain whether the faith they they held would continue or be crushed in the challenging circumstances of human life.

!

In Barbados the number of those persons who claim to have no religion seems to be rising. There is another however that is also problematic.

!

It is the notion which says that if I a persons is blessed by God then only good fortune must befall that individual.

!

We would note that Jesus destroys that outlook when he says to us that in this world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.

!

Let us press on in these trying times with eager faith and hope that God almighty will bring our nation to a level of prosperity that will make us all comfortable.

! Your friend and priest, ! ! Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector !! !!
