THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Genesis Chapter 2 beginning at the 15th verse.
The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.” Now the serpent was more crafty than any other wild animal that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, 'You shall not eat from any tree in the garden’?" The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, nor shall you touch it, or you shall die.’" But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her !3
husband, who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves. Reader: ALL:

THE EPISTLE READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in Romans Chapter 5 beginning at the 12th verse.
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned- sin was indeed in the world before the law, but sin is not reckoned when there is no law. Yet death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died through the one man's trespass, much more surely have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, abounded for the many. And the free gift is not like the effect of the one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. If, because of the one man's trespass, death exercised dominion through that one, much more surely will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness exercise dominion in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. Therefore just as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man's act of righteousness !4
leads to justification and life for all. For just as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. Reader: ALL:
Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.
THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’" Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you,' and 'On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’" Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’" Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! for it is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only !5
him.’" Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.
FROM THE RECTOR’S NOTEBOOK
Greetings: Last Sunday I had to opportunity to visit the Diocese of Guyana to preach at the First Mass of a new priest Fr. John Rodrigues in St. Paul’s Church, Plaisance and to assist him at the Altar. In the afternoon I preached at the Ordination and Consecration of Fr. Bernard Amsterdam and at the invitation of the Bishop of that Diocese The Rt. Rev’d Charles Davidson concelebrated at the mass in the St Michael’s Church Berbice. !6
It was great to share in the ministry of the church in another part of the province and to experience the hospitality of the Guyanese people. I must express thanks to Bishop Davidson, the clergy who remembered fondly their time at Codrington College here in Barbados and the members of the Anglican Church who extended a warm welcome. We have moved liturgically from Epiphany to Lent having had an exciting Ash Wednesday with a myriad of services and opportunities in which persons were able to renter the Lenten season with eager faith. The Day in our parish began with Mass at 6:00am which was said by the Dean Emeritus, The Very Rev’d William Dixon. For me there was the chance to officiate at the Morning Assembly with the delightful children of the Thelma Berry Nursery School next door. The Service for children continued when the Principal, staff and students of the Blackman and Gollop Primary School who came to the church for the annual service. After the Midday Mass with Imposition of Ashes and light lunch, I then went to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in order that members of !7
staff and others who could not attend church could still receive ashes. Our Ash Wednesday services ended with the 6:00pm and 7:30pm in which a number of persons receive the ashes with the determination to keep Lent faithfully. The sign of ashes reminds us of our commitment to observe a good and holy Lent. May God almighty be with us in this journey as we prepare to renew our Baptismal vows at the Great Vigil of Easter. Your friend and Priest Noel A. Burke. M.A. (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER BY: SOPHIA MARSHALL, PH.D CHOLESTEROL The last time you visited the doctor, you were told that your cholesterol was high. Do you really understand what this means? What is cholesterol? Let’s take a look together. Cholesterol is a waxy material that is produced naturally by the liver. However, we also consume it through animal products such as meats, eggs and milk products. It protects the nerves, produces hormones and makes cell tissues. Your body makes what it needs; therefore there is no recommended intake for cholesterol. Types of Cholesterol There are two kinds of cholesterol –Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol and High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Cholesterol.
!
LDL Cholesterol is the ‘bad’ type because if too much circulates in the blood, thick deposits known as plaque can build up in the blood vessels. This leads to a narrowing of the arteries, and an eventual decrease in the amount of blood and oxygen going to the heart. This can result in heart disease and heart attacks.
Photo taken from http://elitemensguide.com HDL Cholesterol is the ‘good’ fellow because it assists in removing LDL from the arteries and to the liver where it is broken down and disposed from the body. Research has shown that there is a link between low levels of HDL and increased risk of heart disease. When you have a blood test done, the levels of HDL and LDL cholesterol are measured. According to the American Heart Association, you are at risk of high cholesterol if your levels of LDL are greater than 200mg/dL or HDL is less than 40 mg/dL. You are borderline risk of high cholesterol if your level of HDL falls in the range 200-239mg/dL. You have high cholesterol if your LDL level is greater than 240mg/dL. Next time you visit the doctor, make note of your levels. *mg/dL means milligrams in a deciliter of blood
