THE COLLECT AND READINGS THE COLLECT Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LESSON A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Joshua Chapter 24 beginning at the 1st verse Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel," Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. And if you be unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." Then the people answered, "Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods; for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; and the LORD drove out

!3

before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land; therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God." But Joshua said to the people, "You cannot serve the LORD; for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume you, after having done you good." And the people said to Joshua, "Nay; but we will serve the LORD." Then Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD, to serve him." And they said, "We are witnesses." He said, "Then put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD, the God of Israel." And the people said to Joshua, "The LORD our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey." So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem. Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 16 Conserva me, Domine

1 Protect me, O God, for I take refuge in you; * I have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord, my good above all other. 2 All my delight is upon the godly that are in the land, * upon those who are noble among the people. 3 But those who run after other gods * shall have their troubles multiplied. 4 Their libations of blood I will not offer, * nor take the names of their gods upon my lips. 5 O Lord, you are my portion and my cup; * it is you who uphold my lot. 6 My boundaries enclose a pleasant land; * indeed, I have a goodly heritage. !4

7 I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; * my heart teaches me, night after night. 8 I have set the Lord always before me; * because he is at my right hand I shall not fall. 9 My heart, therefore, is glad, and my spirit rejoices; * my body also shall rest in hope. 10

For you will not abandon me to the grave, * nor let your holy one see the Pit.

11

You will show me the path of life; * in your presence there is fullness of joy, and in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen. THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Ephesians Chapter 5 beginning at the 21st verse Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. Even so husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no man ever hates his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall

!5

become one flesh." This mystery is a profound one, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church; however, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. Reader: All:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God. THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time, Jesus said “As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever." This he said in the synagogue, as he taught at Caper'naum. Many of his disciples, when they heard it, said, "This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?"But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at it, said to them, "Do you take offense at this? Then what if you were to see the Son of man ascending where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you that do not believe." For Jesus knew from the first who those were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray him. And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father." After this many of his disciples drew back and no longer went about with him. Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also wish to go away?" Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life; and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God." The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: Our Festival of Dedication begins today with the Rev’d Dr. Monrelle Williams being our preacher for the week. This gives our festival the feature of being a weeklong mission with a dedicated message. I am therefore asking all members of our parish to make the effort to attend the various services during the week. It is when we all attend the various services that we as a parish will experience maximum benefit and will be able to all move forward together. The local congregation must form the nucleus of participants even though we may be given support by kindred organisations from across the Diocese. Our preacher for the week the Rev’d Dr. Williams has been a priest for many years and has spent much of his time as a lecturer at Codrington College, right here in Barbados while never losing the touch of being a parish priest. His educational accomplishments include a Bachelor’s degree (with First Class Honors) in Theology from the University of the West Indies; a Master’s Degree in Philosophy (Ecumenism) from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland and a Doctorate degree from Durham University in England. The Rev. Dr. Williams has served on several commissions and committees in the Diocese and in the Province of the West Indies including membership of the Synod Council of the Diocese of Barbados, as well as the Finance Committee of the

Diocese, the Provincial Standing Committee, the Doctrinal Commission, the Commission on Ecumenism We look forward to hearing the message from our heavenly Father borne on the lips of Dr. Williams who now serves as Rector of the St. Cyprian’s Church, Roxbury Massachusetts in the United States. Our island Barbados needs the frequent worship and the prayers of the christian community. This week provides a wonderful opportunity. We worship often as separate congregations on a weekly basis, our Dedication Festival provides a chance for us to worship across our congregations. This gives us the opportunity to learn more about each other as we socialize, hopefully, after each service. Let us avail ourselves of the opportunity to praise our personal God and Lord together as we celebrate the dedication of the St. David’s Church. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector NEWS AND CURRENT EVENTS MEN’S FELLOWSHIP THE NEW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2015-2017 Installed last week: President: Brother Ronald Gilkes; 1st Vice-President: Brother Leroy Parris; Secretary: Brother Lysle Grant; Assistant Secretary: Brother Courtney Taylor; Treasurer: Brother Bradston Clarke.

HEALTH CORNER by Dr. Sophia Marshall The recently released results of the Health of the Nation Survey undertaken by the Chronic Disease Research Centre, indicated that one in every three Barbadians has hypertension. Are you hypertensive? If you are, how have you modified your lifestyle? Do you still stand patiently in line for barbecued pig tails? What is hypertension? Hypertension is defined as having a resting systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg and/ or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90mm Hg, taking antihypertensive medication, or being told by a physician or other health professional on at least two occasions that your blood pressure is high. It leads to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, heart failure, peripheral artery disease and chronic kidney disease. The risk of cardiovascular disease doubles with every increase in SDP of 20 mm Hg or DBP of 10 mm Hg. What can you do about it? Modify your lifestyle! Here’s how: ❖ Increase physical activity ❖ Lose weight (if needed) ❖ A DASH eating plan: ✓ diet rich in fruits and vegetables ✓ low-fat dairy products with a reduced content of saturated and total fat (DASH - Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) ❖ Salt reduction (no more than 2.4 g sodium per day) Read your food labels!

❖ Moderation of alcohol consumption (Source: ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, 8th Edition)
