THE FIRST READING:
READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of the Prophet Isaiah Chapter 5 beginning at the 1st verse.
Let me sing for my beloved my love-song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done in it? When I expected it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and it shall be overgrown with briers and thorns; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his pleasant planting; he expected justice, but saw bloodshed; righteousness, but heard a cry! !3

THE EPISTLE
READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the letter to the Hebrews Chapter 11 beginning at the 29th verse. By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as if it were dry land, but when the Egyptians attempted to do so they were drowned. By faith the walls of Jericho fell after they had been encircled for seven days. By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had received the spies in peace. And what more should I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets--who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured, refusing to accept release, in order to obtain a better resurrection. Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned to death, they were sawn in two, they were killed by the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, persecuted, tormented-of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. Yet all these, though they were commended for their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better so that they would not, apart from us, be made perfect. Therefore, since we are !4
surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Reader: ALL:
Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God. THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour.
And the Lord said "I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-inlaw. He also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, 'It is going to rain'; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be scorching heat'; and it !5
happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord. From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: The Catechism in the Book of Common Prayer (CPWI) states that the Church is the community of the New Covenant. Church according to the BCP (CPWI) is described as the Body of Christ of which all baptized persons are members. The word “church” comes from the Greek word ekklesia which is defined as “an assembly” or “called-out ones.” The root meaning of “church” is not that of a building, but of people - the people of God The church as mentioned is the Body of Christ, of which Christ himself is the head.(Ephesians 1:22-23) It has been constituted as a reality in the world from the day of Pentecost (Acts chapter 2) and remains until Christ’s return at the last day. One of the main functions of church is to glorify God. It does so primarily in two ways; to be an arena for sound teaching and to break the bread and bless the cup. And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Acts 2: 42

It is in the Holy Mass that we carry out our Lord’s command in the Gospel tradition to “do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19). In the Eucharist we demonstrate our unity, pray for the world as well as uphold and support each other in prayer. Needless to say after our ancient and modern prayers, hymns, symbols, gestures and ritual worship we go out to be God’s servants in the world to teach and to call the non-baptized to become initiated into the church by baptism, laying-on of hands and to share fully in the Holy Mass. Is membership of church important? Yes! Is attendance at mass every week vital for the Christian life? Yes! While we do not have to go to church to attain the gift of salvation freely given by Christ, these are both important since in them we show our obedience to our Lord and a willingness to share the faith together. Our Lord established the church for our benefit that we may assemble and meet together and support each other in love. The Christian spiritual life in the end is not so much about the individual; but rather about the community. May God almighty keep us faithful to our membership of the church and may we faithfully participate in the blessed sacraments. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER Seven tips to successfully manage your weight. 1. Cut down on portions Portion your meals in a calorie-conscious manner. One quarter of your plate should comprise a palm-size portion of lean protein, such as salmon or chicken breast; another quarter should comprise a fist-size portion of unrefined grain, such as brown rice; and one-half of your plate should be filled with a variety of colorful vegetables. If you are still hungry after eating your meal, try waiting about 20 minutes to allow your food to digest OR eat a tossed salad, extra vegetables, or a small piece of fruit. 2. Do not skip meals Eating three meals a day plus snacks is essential in weight management. Don’t forget breakfast! Eating breakfast in the morning jump-starts your metabolism. Remember that food is your body’s fuel: without it, your body cannot work as efficiently. 3. Front-load your calories Eat the majority of your calories in the first half of your day. Enjoy portion-controlled snacks during the day to keep hunger under control at night. Choose lighter dinners to coincide with evenings when you are less active. 4. Double up on fiber Most women do not receive the 25-30 grams of fiber recommended each day. To help you boost your fiber intake, choose whole-grain, high-fiber breads and cereals; choose whole-wheat pasta and rice instead of white; and include more dried beans in your meals. Fiber helps fill you up faster, which can cause you to eat less and curb hunger. Most importantly, soluble fiber can help lower your cholesterol. 5. Exercise daily Participate in physical activity daily as recommended by your physician or exercise physiologist.

6. Include 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day Fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They are naturally low in calories and fat. • Eat at least 2-3 servings of fruit daily • Avoid juice and canned fruit • Eat fruits with the skin for added fiber and nutrients • Have plenty of vegetables with lunch and dinner daily. They are also great as a snack. 7. Drink plenty of water Include 6 to 8 glasses of fluid each day. http:/my.clevelandclinic.org
