THE COLLECT Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion, ,nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Ecclesiasticus Chapter 10 beginning at the 12th verse
The beginning of man's pride is to depart from the Lord; his heart has forsaken his Maker. For the beginning of pride is sin, and the man who clings to it pours out abominations. Therefore the Lord brought upon them extraordinary afflictions, and destroyed them utterly. The Lord has cast down the thrones of rulers, and has seated the lowly in their place. The Lord has plucked up the roots of the nations, and has planted the humble in their place. The Lord has overthrown the lands of the nations, and has destroyed them to the foundations of the earth. He has removed some of them and destroyed them, and has extinguished the memory of them from the earth. Pride was not created for men, nor fierce anger for those born of women. Reader:

ALL:
Thanks be to God.
PSALM 112 1.
Hallelujah! Happy are they who fear the Lord* and have great delight in his commandments
2.
Their descendants will be mighty in the land; * the generation of the upright will be blessed.
3.
Wealth and riches will be in their house, * and their righteousness will last for ever.
4.
Light shines in the darkness for the upright;* the righteous are merciful and full of compassion.
5.
It is good for them to be generous in lending * and to manage their affairs with justice.
6.
For they will never be shaken; * the righteous will be kept in everlasting remembrance.
7.
They will not be afraid of any evil rumours;* their heart is right; they put their trust in the Lord.
8.
Their heart is established and will not shrink, * until they see their desire upon their enemies. They have given freely to the poor, * and their righteousness stands fast for ever; they will hold up their head with honour.
9.
10. The wicked will see it and be angry; they will gnash their teeth and pine away;* the desires of the wicked will perish. Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Hebrews Chapter 13 beginning at the 1st verse Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them; and those who are ill-treated, since you also are in the body. Let marriage be held in honour among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled; for God will judge the immoral and adulterous. Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, "I will never fail you nor forsake you." Hence we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid; what can man do to me?" Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 14: 1, 7-14 Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time one sabbath when Jesus went to dine at the house of a ruler who belonged to the Pharisees, they were watching him. Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he marked how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, "When you are invited by any one to a marriage feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest a more eminent man than you be invited by him; and he who invited you both will come and say to you, `Give place to this man,' and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, `Friend, go up higher'; then you will be honored in the
5
presence of all who sit at table with you. For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." He said also to the man who had invited him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your kinsmen or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just." Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ.
ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord. From the Rector’s Notebook: Greetings: The Dedication Festival Week has gone by so quickly. Thanks to my colleagues who have come to us during the week and who have brought tremendous messages. We look forward to today’s services as the festival comes to a close with Solemn Evensong, Sermon & Procession at 6:00pm. We extend warm greetings to the Venerable Eric E. Lynch who will be with us in the 7:45am mass and to Father Ryan Boyce who will be our preacher this evening and who graciously accepted the invitation at short notice after Father Cortez Nurse could no longer attend. A tip of the biretta to the Organist and Choir, the Servers, Chalice Assistants and Ushers who had the sacred duty of being present for the various services.

Our Festival of Dedication or re-Dedication of the current church building after major restoration was done, forms part of a ancient tradition of rededication or reconsecration of places to the glory of God. Dr. Robert Crouse of King's College Chapel, Halifax reminds us that the ancient Jewish Feast of Dedication was observed each year to mark the anniversary of the cleansing and re-consecration of the Temple in Jerusalem, after Judas Maccabaeus had recaptured the city from the Greek occupying forces, in the second century before Christ. We can read about the dramatic historical event in the First Book of the Maccabees, or listen to a musical celebration of it in Handel's Oratorio about Judas Maccabaeus. Our church building stands as a reminder as to what God almighty can do. It is a sign and symbol of the presence of God. In our sacramental teaching the church building will be for us the outward and visible sign of God’s spiritual and invisible grace and presence. We believe that God is Emmanuel mentioned in the sacred text - God with us. We also believe that God cannot be contained in a temple made with hands; in the midst of that however we hold that God allows his presence to be celebrated here in a real way. Everything we do here the singing of hymns and psalms, the solemn processions and the observance of certain rites and the various liturgies, the perpetual light burning unceasingly before the
7
sacred altar all say something that is deeply spiritual and theological. Their symbolic nature evoke from us a response, which logically leads to worship, without any excuse whatsoever. As we give thanks for those who have worshipped in this place, so as the collect for the dedication of a church says, we pray that all who seek God here may find Him and be filled with Hs joy and peace . The Martyrs of New Guinea 2nd September, 1942 New Guinea (also called Irian), one of the world's largest islands, has a difficult terrain that discourages travel between districts, Consequently, it is home to many isolated tribes, with many different cultures and at least 500 languages. Christian missionaries began work there in the 1860's, but proceeded slowly. When World War II threatened Papua and New Guinea, it was obvious that missionaries of European origin were in danger. There was talk of leaving. Bishop Philip Strong wrote to his clergy: "We must endeavour to carry on our work. God expects this of us. The church at home, which sent us out, will surely expect it of us. The universal church expects it of us. The people whom we serve expect it of us. We could never hold up our faces again if, for our own safety, we all forsook Him and fled, when the shadows of the Passion began to gather around Him in His spiritual and mystical body, the Church in Papua." They stayed. Almost immediately there were arrests. Eight clergymen and two laymen were executed "as an example" on September 2, 1942. In the next few years, many Papuan Christians of all Churches risked their own lives to care for the wounded. PRAYER Almighty God, we remember before you this day the blessed Martyrs of New Guinea, who, following the example of their Savior, laid down their lives for their friends; and we pray that we, who honor their memory, may imitate their loyalty and faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. http://justus.anglican.org/resources/bio/235.html
