THE FIRST READING: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Deuteronomy Chapter 4 beginning at the 1st verse. So now, Israel, give heed to the statutes and ordinances that I am teaching you to observe, so that you may live to enter and occupy the land that the LORD, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. You must neither add anything to what I command you nor take away anything from it, but keep the commandments of the LORD your God with which I am charging you. You must observe them diligently, for this will show your wisdom and discernment to the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and discerning people!" For what other great nation has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is whenever we call to him? And what other great nation has statutes and ordinances as just as this entire law that I am setting before you today? But take care and watch yourselves closely, so as neither to forget the things that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all the days of your !3

life; make them known to your children and your children's children—. Reader: ALL:

Psalm 15 1. LORD, who may dwell in your tabernacle? *who may abide upon your holy hill? 2. Whoever leads a blameless life, and does what is right,* who speaks the truth from his heart; 3. There is no slander upon his tongue: he does no evil to their friend,* he does not heap contempt upon his neighbour. 4. In his sight the wicked is rejected,* but he honours those who fear the LORD . 5. He has sworn to do no wrong* and does not take back his word. 6. He does not give his money in hope of gain, * nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. 7. Whoever does these things * shall never be overthrown.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now * and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in James Chapter 1 beginning at the 17th verse

Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures. You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God's righteousness. Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act--they will be blessed in their doing. If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time, when the Phar'isees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him, they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. (For the Phar'isees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders; and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles. So the Phar'isees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?" He said to them, "Isai'ah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written, "This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.' You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition." Then he called the crowd again and said to them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile." And he said, "It is what comes out of a person that defiles. For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person."

From the Rector's Notebook Greetings:

There is an inquisitive curiosity built within us as human beings. This is seen in the quest for knowledge as children reach out to touch, taste or ask questions. Our children and young people all have their various gifts and skills. They are wonderfully unique and express their views without fear or favour. I mentioned at Mass a few weeks ago a conversation that I had with one of the children at the Daily Vacation Bible Camp about the Old Testament story of Noah and the Ark. His query was why did Noah not build the ark out of metal since it would have lasted longer than one made of wood. We also had a discussion on the being of God and God’s existence. This eight years old lad could argue his point very well. My other experience was with another eight year old. This was on Monday evening just after the choir rehearsal. I was at the church reading an article on Alexander Schmemann who was an Orthodox Christian priest, teacher, and writer. !7

This chap came by after the rehearsal to say hello and was drawn to what I was reading. He got the name of the theologian correct, and I thought, as a matter of interest, that I would tell him what the article was about: linking theology, liturgy and spirituality. We chatted about this and about the things that we liked to read and what fascinated us about reading. It was to my amazement and that of one of my colleagues the following night after Evensong that this eight year old could recall the major words we had discussed and the name Alexander Schmemann. The point about all of this is that we do good when we orient the natural curiosity, talent and ability of our young people towards God. If we want our young people to be good and productive citizens we must realise that there is a method and that it involves exposing our children to God and the practice of attending Holy Mass. Our recently concluded Vacation Bible Camp has been great at giving our children opportunities to think about the personalities and significant events in scripture. Parents and guardians are further invited to ensure that their children participate in the !8

ongoing Christian Education programs of the parish. This will be a wise investment in ensuring christian thinking scholars and leaders in all of the enterprises of human life. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev'd Canon) Rector NOTICES AND ANNOUNCEMENT BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK

HEALTH CORNER By SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d Kyle: Hi Grand-dad! What are you doing? Grand-dad: Hi Son, I’m just throwing some Jeyes Fluid around the yard. Kyle: What is that? And why are you doing it? And it’s all on your hands! Grand-dad: Relax child! It’s only a disinfectant. I cleaned some fish earlier and I’m trying to prevent the flies from coming around. Kyle: A disinfectant. Hmmm, so you are really using a pesticide then. So Grand-dad, you should be more careful and at least use gloves. My mummy always says that you should handle any pesticide, in fact any chemical with caution! Grand-dad: No Kyle, pesticides are what I use to spray in the garden to destroy the pests like white-flies and aphids. Kyle: Grand-dad, you know you are usually right but not this time. While you were talking I was checking Google on my tablet! According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, a pesticide is any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, repelling or mitigating any pest. It also states that well-known pesticides include insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides and fungicides. The website says that less well-known pesticides include disinfectants, attractants and so on. You see Grand-dad, it is a pesticide. Grand-dad: You too smart for your own good! That’s why I love yuh though. So wait, now to think of it, even the dog’s shampoo for tick treatment is a pesticide? Kyle: Yup! You know Grand-dad, pesticides can enter your body by mouth, by contact with the skin or eyes or by inhalation. Grand-dad: That is true and you should always wear the proper personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to these chemicals. You know I have to go to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security for some advice about my cassava sticks. But while there I will visit the Ministry’s Pesticide Control Division for further information on pesticide use. Kyle: Sounds good but Grand-dad, what happened to the fish you cleaned? I’m hungry. Grand-dad with a chuckle and smile replied: That’s Granny’s Division.
