THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Malachi Chapter 3 beginning at the 1st verse.

See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight--indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the LORD in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years. Reader: ALL:

Psalm 84

Here ends the Reading

Thanks be to God.

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Epistle to the Hebrews Chapter 2 beginning at the 14th verse.

Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God. THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour. When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord"), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is 4

stated in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” And the child's father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, "This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed--and a sword will pierce your own soul too.” There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ our Lord 5

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: Today is the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord in the Temple. We use this liturgical celebration to launch the 180th Anniversary of our Church. This event recorded in St. Luke’s Gospel Luke 2:22-40 is a reminder that one of the aspects of the Christian life required for today is constancy of commitment. The parents of Jesus took him to the Temple in Jerusalem to fulfill what was required by Law (Leviticus 12:2-3). It meant a life of total dedication to Almighty God as expressed in the life of the adult Jesus whom we meet in the Gospel. Sacred Scripture reports that Jesus’ religious habits and customs taught to him by his parents held him throughout his adult life. He kept to the custom of going to the Synagogue every Sabbath and observed all of the festivals of his religion. These practices are vital in our own religious expression if we are to be true to what was promised at our baptism when we present our children to God in this sacramental rite. As we launch the 180th Anniversary of the St. David’s Church we invite every member of the church to be implicated and involved in the observance. The emphasis will be on christian discipleship, mission and evangelism as we seek to call persons to our Lord, to worship and to the daily dedication to the tenets on Christian spirituality.

It will be important for all of us to understand the meaning of that call to “follow me and I will make you fish for people”. (Mark 1:16-20, Matthew 4:18-22, Luke 5:2-11, John 1:40-42) Professor Kevin Irwin stresses the point that sacred scripture symbolises the engagement of God to his people. The words “follow me” had meaning when they were uttered for the first time and they have meaning for our parish as we celebrate 180 years. For the 180th Anniversary it will be important to continue the program started last year in which we are seeking deeper engagement and relationship with each other. The “Meet and Greet Programme” by the grace of God will be strengthened as we get to know one another better during the coming year. Not only will we seek to be more outward looking as a parish; we will also make those vital connections between our spiritual faith and the health of body and mind, paying attention to the whole person. As we bring ourselves before Almighty God on this Feast of the Presentation, we ask for God’s guidance and blessing on the 180th Anniversary of the St. David’s Church. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA, (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER BY: SOPHIA MARSHALL, PH.D Betty: Girl, this coronavirus or whatever you call it, like it dread though! Stacy: Look, my friends just come back from China last month and them lucky yuh hear! Betty: But I’m confused, they say it’s a new virus but I’m sure I see coronavirus listed on a disinfectant spray that I use. Stacy: Coronavirus is a large family of viruses. So what we are seeing now is a new strain or like a new member of the family. Betty: Oh, I see. But wait the cold common is part of that family? And what about that one they called SARS? Stacy: Yes, you’re spot on. Most coronaviruses are not dangerous but others like this one, got the world on edge and rightfully so. Betty: The medical experts say symptoms can include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Stacy: Look girlfriend, our Ministry of Health is monitoring the situation and all we can do is practice proper hygiene and pray. Betty: Yuh right, I keep telling those dirty children of mine, to follow the guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I better share them with you too because you coughed on me earlier: •

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Stay home when you are sick.

Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
