THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Joshua Chapter 24 beginning at the 1st verse.

Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Long ago your ancestors--Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor--lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods. Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan and made his offspring many. "Now therefore revere the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. Now if you are unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. Then the people answered, "Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods; for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; and the LORD drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God. But Joshua said to the people, "You cannot serve the LORD, for !3

he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume you, after having done you good.” And the people said to Joshua, "No, we will serve the LORD!” Then Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD, to serve him." And they said, "We are witnesses.” He said, "Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.” The people said to Joshua, "The LORD our God we will serve, and him we will obey.” So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem.

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the 1st Thessalonians Chapter 4 beginning at the 13th

verse

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel's call and with the sound of God's trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour. Jesus answered them "Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their !5

lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, 'Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise replied, 'No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, 'Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he replied, 'Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord HYMN 376 A&M - O God of love, O King of peace, O God of love, O King of peace, Make wars throughout the world to cease; The wrath of sinful man restrain; Give peace, O God, give peace again! Remember, Lord, Thy works of old, The wonders that our fathers told; Remember not our sin’s dark stain; Give peace, O God, give peace again! Whom shall we trust but Thee, O Lord? Where rest but on Thy faithful word? None ever called on Thee in vain: Give peace, O God, give peace again! Where saints and angels dwell above, All hearts are knit in holy love; O bind us in that heav'nly chain: Give peace, O God, give peace again! !6

From The Rector’s Notebook Greetings: As we commemorate Remembrance Day today, we bring to mind all of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in giving their lives for the sake of freedom. Today at cenotaphs across the commonwealth national parades with short devotional services are being held as we pray for the war dead. Local and international dignitaries will lay wreaths and armed and unarmed units will March pass these war memorials containing the names of those who died. We bring before God those who fought in the First World War (1914-1918), the Second World War (1939-1945) and the many battles that have been wrought since then. The red poppy is the sign that we have made a contribution to ensure that veteran executives are able to enjoy some level of comfort which they deserve. We must credit the Barbados Legion and the Barbados Poppy League for their untiring work in ensuring the welfare of these former soldiers. Mr. Vere Springer of the Barbados Legion in a recent newspaper article is quoted to have said that even though the number of elderly legionnaires linked to the global wars was continuing to drop because of deaths, financial support was still required.

On this Remembrance Sunday we must pray for an end to conflicts. After a long history of war human beings have not yet learnt how to live in peace. Some seven hundred years before the birth of Jesus the young prophet Isaiah anticipated a time when: they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. Isaiah 2:4 We continue to pray for those who take counsel for the nations of the world that the dignity of persons will always be upheld and we can see the fulfillment of that ancient prophecy. May God almighty pour his blessing upon all veterans and grant the guidance of his Holy Spirit on those who care for them. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

For the Fallen

Poem by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943)

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.

HEALTH CORNER BY SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d DID YOU KNOW? ➢ Celery is the best vegetable source of naturally occurring sodium. ➢ Fresh beans contain vitamin A, B-complex vitamins, calcium and potassium. ➢ Onions are an excellent antioxidant, and they contain anti-allergy, antiviral and antihistamine properties. ➢ Parsley contains three times as much vitamin C as oranges, and twice as much iron as spinach. ➢ Pumpkin seeds are high in zinc. ➢ Tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C (the vitamin C is mostly concentrated in the jellylike substance that surrounds the seeds). They also contain vitamin A and B-complex vitamins, potassium and phosphorus. ➢ Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fat, which is easily burned for energy. They have more than twice as much potassium as a banana. ➢ Grapefruits are among the most nutritious fruits but the chemicals in grapefruit can interfere with the action of certain medications. If you are taking medication, be sure to check with a medical professional before drinking or consuming any grapefruit.
