“Foundation.” “Thankful.” “Values.” “Academic.” “Tradition.” “Faith.” These are words we hear often when we ask parents and alumni what they think of when they think of Notre Dame. It probably shouldn’t be surprising that we hear pretty much the same thing when we ask donors, “Why Notre Dame. . .why do you give to this institution?”

It’s really a no-brainer, they say. The school has made such a profound difference in their children’s lives or in their own lives, it just makes perfect sense to help ensure that “difference” will be available to others well into the future. Many of those donors also say that after making their first gift, supporting Notre Dame feels like a natural thing for them to do. It just feels good. So it is with that shared feel-good spirit that we present the Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy 2013-14 Annual Report. Dear friends of Notre Dame,

The 2014-2015 school year is almost six months in the books, and life at 1300, 1389 and 1425 Giddings Road seems to be moving along nicely, sporting its new governance structure and property acquisitions. We began the 2014-2015 school year with an enrollment of 1,153 students, topping our expectations by about 35 students. Then, just in time for the lower division “trunk and treat,” we completed a new “64-car” parking lot and entrance roadway near Walton Boulevard on three newly-acquired acres of property just west of the lower division school building. This year we will turn our sights to improvements at the 1300 Giddings campus; stay tuned.

Now, I turn to school year 2013-2014 for which this annual report is written. We completed the fiscal year with a clean “opinion audit” and healthy surplus for the third year in a row. The school’s enrollment, building projects and programs mirror our ongoing success. Of paramount importance, of course, was the process we began to change our school governance model as well as purchasing the 1300 Giddings Road property from the Archdiocese of Detroit. The final transaction, which included the donation of Marist Fathers property on the west side of Giddings Road, took place just three days into the 2014-2015 fiscal year. But, in truth, the entire 2013-2014 was dedicated to making the change-over happen. Our Board of Trustees, the Archdiocese of Detroit, and the Marist Fathers of the United States Province worked nearly 18 months to secure a bright future for Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy.

Our 166 seniors were accepted to 140+ colleges and universities; and, again, set a record, garnering more than $14.7 million in grants and scholarships—an average of more than $88,000 per student. We all understand that it costs a fair amount of money to send students to a fine school like NDPMA, but the parents of our graduates can attest to the fact that it is well worth the money—particularly, when a substantial number of college dollars are awarded to their children. Without a doubt, NDPMA offers quite a payback on tuition dollars spent at this campus. Increasingly, we are seen as the “king” of the price/value proposition as more and more of our families see the long-range dollar value of a Notre Dame education. Our school continues to “achieve great things for God!” as the Marist Fathers founder, the Venerable Jean-Claude Colin, s.m., would say. We have a great Board of Trustees, senior administration, faculty, staff, and student body. However, much of our success is the direct result of you, our loyal donors,

Dear members of the Notre Dame family: Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan recently wrote in an article in America magazine, that “Catholic schools are, indeed, a pearl of great price.” He goes on to explain his rationale that “Catholic schools are singularly effective in educating our children and passing on our cherished values, and are worth all the trouble, sacrifice and energy they require.” Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy is one of the finest examples in our country of exactly why we as parents send the ones we love—our children—to Catholic school. The graduates of Notre Dame have gone on to become social workers, nurses, actors, executives, politicians, religious, doctors and lawyers, etc. And it began with their Notre Dame education. Our children have been given the great gift of a Notre Dame education through: • Academic discipline to learn in a structured classroom environment from junior kindergarten through 12th grade. Our children have access to teachers, courses, learning materials and technology that have prepared them to be ahead of many of their peers upon entering their college programs, as well as providing significant scholarship opportunities. While Notre Dame has established an outstanding reputation for education, there is still so much more that we, as parents, grandparents, alumni, and especially as believers in Catholic education, can do! The Notre Dame education will need your support for its continued growth now, and in the generations to come. On July 3, 2014, Notre Dame established itself as an independent Catholic organization with the Marist Fathers oversight—putting in place a non-profit structure that will serve as a model for Catholic education in future years. Over the next several years, we will be implementing our long-term Master Plan to build upon the current successes of the school. In the coming years, we plan to add much-needed classroom and lab capacity, a new locker room, additional athletic facilities, a performing arts center, a new chapel and more. With the support of the Marist Fathers, we will continue to emphasize the Catholic Christian values that are so fundamentally needed in the world. Thank you for your commitment to Catholic education, and to the investment needed for Notre Dame to lead the way in giving this education to the next generation: our children. Dear friends, Fiscal year 2014 was a banner year for the school in many respects. The year began with a Grand Anniversary Celebration in October to commemorate a number of anniversaries, including the 10-year anniversary of the lower division, the 20-year anniversary of the upper division, the 45-year anniversary of Pontiac/Oakland Catholic, the 60-year anniversary of Notre Dame High School and the 150-year anniversary of the Marist apostolate in the United States. As the year progressed, we won a state championship in competitive cheer, robotics and volleyball. Combined with what we now refer to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;snowmageddon,â&#x20AC;? these events caused a stir in our tradition to award a day off of school for state championships, forcing us to reevaluate our policies. The athletic championships were the fourth and fifth state championships in school history. Previous championships include girls ski, volleyball and boys golf. (Note: The school has also earned runner-up championships in boys soccer, boys lacrosse and competitive cheer.) In the spring, we graduated 166 seniors who were accepted to more than 140 different colleges and universities across the nation, including nine

to the University of Notre Dame and 50 to the University of Michigan. They earned a whopping $14.7 million in college scholarships and grants, scored an average ACT of 27 (more than six points above the state average) and volunteered more than 10,000 hours of community service during their high school career. Once again, 100% of the graduating class moved on to pursue a college degree. From a financial standpoint, the school has benefited from both an upward trend in enrollment and record-level support in annual giving. We are grateful to you, our shareholders, for investing in this Catholic, Marist institution. We cannot continue to grow without the support of each and every parent, alumni and friend who has been touched in some way by our school. Finally, on June 22, we completed the multi-year process of establishing the school as its own Michigan-based, independent, nonprofit, educational corporation. The incorporation laid the foundation for an aggressive move to purchase the school properties and buildings from the Archdiocese of Detroit on July 3, which we now fondly refer to as Independence Day for Notre Dame. The incorporation and purchase, combined with the previous move of the lower division, a consolidation of our properties, a restructuring of our debt and an agreement with the Marist Fathers to oversee the Catholicity of the school for the archbishop, were all designed to secure a long and bright future for Notre Dame and its students.
