MELFIELD GARDENS
New build intergenerational residential scheme
CLIENT: Phoenix Community Housing
DATE: Construction to start late 2020
LOCATION: Beckenham, London
DESCRIPTION: This project sets out design proposals for an intergenerational residential development to provide 30 independent living apartments for over 55’s and 2 postgraduate student apartments in two linear blocks, with communal green space between. The landscape strategy is to create a holistic public realm that promotes a sense of community and provides attractive private spaces that are catered towards the residents needs. This is delivered through a central public realm, community gardens, green roofs, private gardens and frontages and parking as well as improvements to the existing public realm.
ROLE: My role was lead landscape architect for RIBA stages 2, 3a and 3b collaborating with the architects to develop an overarching strategy. My responsibilities included developing a landscape design, liaising with the client and other consultants, briefing junior members of the team, coordinating public consultations, presenting at design review panels and preapplication meetings, ensuring the design is in line with planning and building legislation, coordinating the planning application Design and Access Statements and preparing the detailed drawings in Revit including the planting plan.
The open space strategy aims to make the environment a social space, reduce the dominance of vehicles and make the street a pedestrian friendly environment. This is delivered through a green belt that runs through the central public realm, strengthening the visual connection through the site

The parking surveys showed that 12 vehicles park on Melfield Gardens. There are 14 resident car parking permits which aligns with the collected parking survey data This suggests that there is parking demand spaces for Melfield ardens and Milcroft House. Proposal The parking proposals will cater for the existing residents of Melfield Gardens nd Milcroft House. bedsit flats are due to be removed from Site and replaced with 34 1-bed dwellings. Informed by the parking survey, the parking proposals will re-provide the existing demand (14 parking spaces) and provide additional spaces, accordance with the draft London Plan parking standards. Bicycle torage We providing 34 cycle spaces which equates bike space per dwelling. Stores will be designed offer greater flexibility in order to incorporate scooters for residents with limited mobility. Melfield Gardens Why are we here? For 30 years we have worked with many of the UK’s leading developers, housing providers and Local Authorities to create desirable new homes and places. We have considerable experience in LB Lewisham including estate regenerations acting for Lewisham Homes and securing Planning Permission for major redevelopments such as Convoys Wharf, Lewisham Gateway and Catford Greyhound Stadium. recent years, Phoenix have built their first new homes and plan to build more affordable homes which meet the needs of the local community. Their recently completed developments include the award winning Hazelhurst Court Extra Care scheme, Melfield Gardens. LB Lewisham agreed to ‘chain lettings’ approach at Hazelhurst Court where 21 of the new homes were let to existing Phoenix residents who were ‘under occupying’ family sized accommodation. This was achieved through dedicated officer at Phoenix working closely over two year period with eligible residents. The resulting lettings have meant that from new homes, more than 60 households have been able to move more appropriate homes and into Phoenix home from the Council waiting list. Phoenix would like to develop new homes on the site of the now vacant 1732 Melfield Gardens. proposed that the new homes would be allocated residents over 55 years old and be designed attract under occupiers from within the local community and generate further chain lettings. The development will also contain garden room for the residents meet and socialise. We plan design and deliver homes with reduced energy bills. We are also trying reduce the impact the development local air quality and climate change by reducing carbon emissions over its lifetime, whilst mitigating the risk overheating. DESCRIPTION: The vision of the regeneration of this 1970’s estate is to shape a contemporary neighbourhood that demonstrates innovative design and reimagines suburban development. 800 new homes will be provided with a high quality integrated network of new and upgraded green spaces with pedestrian orientated links. The proposals provide a strong landscape framework developed around community spaces, ecological enhancement and play.
ROLE: My role was lead landscape architect for the Reserve Matters Application for Phase 1 & 2 working with 3 architecture firms. My responsibilities included leading the landscape design through a series of design workshops with the client, coordinating consultation material, presenting at pre-application meetings, ensuring the design meets planning obligations and Section 106, coordinating the Design and Access Statement, briefing team members on tasks, coordinating consultants on the drainage, transport and refuse strategy and managing the design decision tracker.

DESCRIPTION: This redevelopment of Redbrick Estate provides 55 new housing units, new community facilities and public realm improvements to improve the environment for existing residents whilst offering new homes for local people. The public realm works include the provision of a new engaging amenity space and improvements to the existing communal outdoor spaces. Pedestrian routes through the estate will be improved, with new paving and planting used to define more private areas in front of ground floor homes.
ROLE: My role is lead landscape architect for Stage 5 of works for the design and build contract. The role has consisted of coordination of residents exhibition material, meeting with the residents steering group, producing setout drawings, reviewing the drawings to be Part M compliant, discharging planning conditions, resolving construction issues with the contractors and sub-consultants and producing construction drawing revisions.

Destination park with bespoke playground and basketball court

DESCRIPTION: The project brief was to upgrade the park to provide better amenities for local residents for relaxation, play and recreation. The masterplan developed a design for a destination playground, basketball half courts, a learn-to-ride track, picnic area, pathworks, planting and entrance works including a curved sculptural corten wall. The playground consists of a bespoke play tower, natural play, astroturf mound and colourful wetpour design as well as traditional play elements.
ROLE: I worked in a team of two to deliver the park overall masterplan and destination playground from concept through to handover. My role included collaborating on the concept document for Local Government adoption, co-ordinating the playground tender package (including demolition, drainage, earthworks, levels and planting plans), designing and detailing play elements, collaborating with playground specialists in the detailing of the bespoke tower and playground surfacing, detailing the demolition, assisting with the park upgrades tender and attending construction site meetings.

The playground theme was inspired by the childhood game ‘Pick Up Sticks.’ Forms and colours in the play space were inspired from this theme to create a fun vibrant character for the space. The stick form was woven through the fort structure and play elements as if thrown down by a giant hand.

Traditional Japanese garden to honour the sister-city partnership

DESCRIPTION: The theme of this authentic Japanese garden was a fusion between a traditional ‘stroll’ and ‘tea’ garden, which included a feature pond, tea pavilion, feature entrances and a mix of Japanese and New Zealand native planting. The original ‘Fukuoka Friendship Garden,’ gifted to Auckland City Council from Japan in 1990 was unfortunately demolished and Auckland Council was tasked with working with Fukuoka City to re-establish a new garden. The concept design was developed by a specialist Japanese consultant, which was then taken through to detailed design and construction by Auckland Council.
ROLE: My role was lead landscape architect on site and I worked in a team of two to deliver the resource consents, tender and construction packages. My role consisted of developing the detailed design following traditional Japanese construction methods, liaising with engineers and the Japanese consultants to sign-off construction drawings, supervising contractors and resolving construction issues.

DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this project was to develop the masterplan of Chamberlain Park with a plan for a new neighbourhood park, the naturalisation of Waititiko Creek and a character proposal for the reconfiguration of the public golf course. The key objectives were to provide recreational and community facilities as well as providing wider ecological enhancement. The park key features included an informal recreation area, events space, a playground, carpark and cycling paths.
ROLE: I was the lead landscape architect from concept through to detailed design, with the production of documents for a detailed park concept, golf course character plan, tree assessment, stream naturalisation plan and playground detailed design. Responsibilities included mentoring juniors, coordinating public consultation and workshops with Maori representatives, presenting to Local Government, preparing cost estimates, preparing resource consents for the playground and briefing juniors in the development of the park detailed design.

RIPARIAN PLANTING A riparian buffer will be created along each bank of the stream. This buffer will incorporate variety of native plants, including grasses and sedges in close proximity to the stream channel and larger tree specimens and flaxes set further back. These plants the stream, which will assist in lowering water temperatures. Planting will also providing source of organic matter and terrestrial insects to the in-stream envi invertebrates and fish respectively. A substantial riparian buffer will also improve bank stability and provide as habitat and food sources for terrestrial birds, lizards and insects. Careful sel will also improve the amenity values of the stream environment. PLANTING ZONES RIPARIAN (comprising of stream edge, floodplain and stream banks) • Stream edge species are to be planted within 3m of the stream edge at density of 4 plants/m². Stream edge species are tolerant of periodic immersion and during high rainfall events will ‘lie down’ allowing maximum conveyance to reduce th risk of flooding. • Floodplain species have been selected to withstand both periodic immersion as well as dry periods. These are to be planted adjacent to the stream edge zone at a density of plant/m². • Stream bank species are to be planted furthest from the stream edge at density of 1 plant/m² above the floodplain area. LOW GROWING Zones of low growing vegetation are to be planted along the true left bank to maintain sight lines to the creek from the local park and provide increased amenity values. Fast growing species have been selected quickly stabilise the banks and mini ENRICHMENT Areas of enrichment planting have been identified to increase fr pockets of riparian vegetation, and to increase the overall biodiversity of the site. It is recommended that mature pine trees are thinned or felled over time and replaced with native, canopy forming species. REGENERATED FOREST Restoration of the bush along southern Waititiko/Meola Creek to Develop succession plan to remove diseased trees, weeds, and selected exotics, replacing with eco-sourced native trees to restore the original ecotype. WETLAND Plant species within the wetland have been selected to include plants of varying composition and heights which are to be placed bands perpendicular to th wetland shape will maximise the flowpath within the wetland. DESCRIPTION: This development plan was created to guide the transformation of the former Green Mount landfill into a park. The site went through clean-fill operations and contouring to resemble its original form as a volcanic cone, prior to its quarrying and subsequent use as a landfill. The document investigates the constraints of developing on a former landfill and outlines proposals to complete the rehabilitation of the site and create a destination park and activity hub. The park proposals include a summit lookout, fitness trails, a BMX track, feature play areas, storm-water ponds and parking.
ROLE: I worked with the director of landscape to create a development plan for Greenmount Park through to the first phase of concept design and public consultation. My role included coordinating the report, site analysis and research, documenting the site constraints, attending design meetings, preparing public consultation boards, preparing the rough order of costs and attending workshops with local Māori iwi groups to instill cultural values and narratives into the masterplan through the Te Aranga Māori Design Principles.

The site currently undergoing final clean fill operations and removal surface and underground landfill assets. The landfill is encased with thick clay liner at th ase and sides, as well as an extensive cap and cover, creating an impervious barrier to safely isolate the surface use from the waste. On top of those layers, bulk fill was imported between 2008 and 2013, as well as additional managed fill from 2013. The final layers ncludes 1m of managed fill and layer of topsoil. Once the closure works are complete, he site will be handed over to council to rehabilitate the site into public park. Closure Process Secure the site as operations begin to cease. Remove unnecessary equipment and assets. Prepare for future management of risks and maintenance includin access, efficiency of operations, asset stocktakes and maintenance schedules. Deliver risk assessments to determine controls for maintenance activities, surface use and development. Produce site management plan for site care handover actions. Sediment treatment ponds which are no longer required for landfi purposes. Associated decontamination structures will be removed. These need to reshaped to grades which allow for safe public access as the sides are currently too steep. Potential opportunity to treat stormwater runoff from Harris and Smales Roads provided capacity is sufficient. Area to remain leased to ESL until late 2017. The light green hatch denotes the area outside of former quarry/landfill generally less encumbered by constraints. This can be considered ‘natural ground’ although does feature some buried gas lines and at grade monitoring points. Gas to energy plant. Required for the foreseeable future to ensure safe venting of gases off the landfill. Dark green hatch denotes landfill consideration, see general notes below. Steep grades, safety from falling protection required. Access required for vehicles to access critical gas monitoring points. Clusters of gas monitoring points. Existing drystone wall with amenity and possible heritage value, to be retained as far as possible. Private property, not held by council. Key Considerations for the Landfill Footprint (dark green hatch) Due to the organic nature of the landfill material, settlement cross the site occurring, and is expected to continue over the next decade. his could be up to 2m places, and means that any structures/buildings proposed here would become very expensive, due to the footings required. Also there would be significant gas risks to be managed through building and structure design, which would also greatly generate costs. Further to this, must be expected that other surface features such as paths may slump over the next decade and need repair. The entire site has depths of cleanfill up to 20m, with the to 1m being fill meeting the quality required for open space. Topsoil coverage however quite shallow (150200mm), which could restrict plant growth. Fire safety regulations issues around gas production on closed andfills and requirements to locate and access infrastructure preclude lon grass, and this site would be in the order of 40-60k per annum to mow. There very small (but not zero) likelihood of issues arising with gas leachate or stability that may require temporary restriction of public ccess. herefore maintaining some form of fence around the former landfill area the short to medium term requirement. 7 20 Using cleanfill, Green Mount is currently being re-contoured to resemble its original form as volcanic cone pre-quarrying, and becoming landmark sible from number of surrounding vantage points. Views across the city harbours, an to other manga can be seen from the top of the new landform. is expected that upo completion, the summit will become destination point for locals and tourists. The topography of the site allows for certain development opportunities and introduces some constraints. The sloping sides provide interesting terrai for range of walking trails and passive recreation opportunities, whilst the flat ar the western side and on the north east flank can provide opportunities for more ‘active’ recreation zones. The site designed to shed and direct rainfall off and away from landfill to reduce gas and leachate, therefore unsuited to be re-contoured into large flatter areas. DESCRIPTION: This phased strategic streetscape design consisting of multiple projects for new subdivision roads networks as well as upgrades to existing subdivisions in Doha South. The over-arching concept was to create a high quality road network that is designed around the experience of the user, improving the infrastructure for residents. Innovative design solutions were developed to respond to the various right of way cross sections; providing a landscaped public realm along the entire local roadway system inclusive of bicycle lanes, walkways, street furniture, wayfinding and lighting.
ROLE: I worked within a multi-disciplinary team supporting various subdivision projects in the design and tender preparation. My responsibilities included developing designs for pedestrian networks and streetscape features, developing concept designs for highway linear parks, preparing 3D Sketchup models and high quality presentation drawings, assisting with concept packages and briefing the CAD team in the preparation of technical packages.

DESCRIPTION: The objective of this thesis was to investigate how public spaces can strategise to be more inclusive of adolescents. It researches the effect the urban form has on social problems in youth and their sense of belonging to a community. These findings informed the development of a youthinclusive framework guiding the design of four key intervention zones. The proposed intergenerational community spaces and youth zones aim to work towards creating an inclusive public realm that reduces youth social issues and reconnects the community.
THESIS PROCESS: The proposal is supported by research on inclusive design, youth engagement and studies on the relationship between urban form and youth social behaviour. Analysis on the physical, social, spatial and planning context directly informed the research, with particular focus on the youth social context in the urban environment. The research hypothesis propositions that providing multi-use inclusive public spaces and safe youth retreats can create a positive community environment that can work towards combating social issues.

A social network and activity programme has been developed to reinforce the strategies in the masterplan to achieve the manifesto aims of providing a ‘youth platform,’ ‘youth inclusive public realm’ and ‘preventing social issues.’ The programme maps out daily, weekly and seasonal activities for different target groups including intergenerational, family orientated and youth focussed.
