Virginia Beach: A C O A S TA L C I T Y

THIS IS THE LIFE.

Where you wake up early because you want to, just to be the first in line at the edge of the Earth, putting everything behind you. The roar of the surf echoes in applause, welcoming you as the sun kisses your forehead. You’ve arrived. Where time seems to stop so you can finally catch up – not because you’re moving too slow but because this moment is worth the wait. The world floats by with the clouds and the gulls on the ocean breeze. Freedom spirals and dances in the salty air, calling you to remember all the things that truly matter: the simple things, beautiful things and spontaneous things. Nothing to stop you from immersing yourself in every experience you set out to capture. Here, the days pass like waves; no two are the same – but each one celebrated like the greatest that has ever lived. Tales of amazing adventures, of love lost and found, of victory and defeat. A collection of moments, like grains of sand stirring around your feet – an age-old magical kind of pixie dust. And, just like that – you are transformed. No longer an anonymous visitor. From now on, you live the life.

BEACH VARIETY

The Variety

O F C O A S TA L E X P E R I E N C E S

Shoreline may be the defining element of any beach destination, but it’s our uniquely varied coastal culture that truly sets Virginia Beach apart. You’re in for a multi-dimensional vacation experience here, with an abundance of things to do, places to explore and flavors to sample. Everything that gives locals such an intense love for the beach life is yours to experience – all you have to do is immerse yourself. An excellent starting place: the vibrant Resort Beach. Famous for its iconic three-mile boardwalk, this is where you’ll find restaurants, bustling nightlife, live entertainment, year-round events, shops and the throwback beach nostalgia for which we’ve long been known. Ride a surrey down the boardwalk to snap a selfie with King Neptune; take a surfing lesson or skim-board along the shore; build a sandcastle at Grommet Island; ride a beach cruiser to your ice cream shop of choice; or explore the art galleries and shops in the emerging ViBe Creative District. To the south, not far from the Resort Beach, Sandbridge Beach exudes i sland-like charm, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The sand dunes house stunning beachfront rental homes, ideal for a large family vacation spent beach-combing, paddle boarding and feasting on freshly caught blue crabs. Kayak through the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, take in a sunset at Little Island Park, or head down to neighboring Pungo to pick fresh produce at one of 16 You-Pick Farms. Head north of the Resort Beach to find the laid-back Chesapeake Bay Beach, known as a waterman’s paradise with the off-the-radar, dockside restaurants and bars locals prefer. Watch the sun set over the water while savoring fresh seafood, visit a local brewery, take in a sunrise or a sunset, embark on an oyster-farm boat tour on the Lynnhaven River, hike the winding trails of historic First Landing State Park or climb to the top of the Cape Henry Lighthouse. West of the Resort Beach, Town Center rises as an inland cosmopolitan oasis. State-of-the-art venues and a central park host cultural events, while uptown shopping and dining options are scattered amid glittering high-rise architecture. The feeling is definitely uptown, but it’s a comfortable, you’restill-on-vacation feeling that’s a special treat for your sophisticated side.

LOCAL FAVORITES

DON’T MISS THESE

Local Favorites SUNNY LITTLE SECRETS

Out in the distance, where the glimmering water meets the restless sky, the day comes and goes like the undulating tide. To see the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean and set over the Chesapeake Bay in the same day is an experience that is distinctly Virginia Beach, and we have some of the best hush-hush spots for catching them both. Watch through the dancing sea oats on the dunes of Sandbridge, as the waking sun glistens on the morning surf. If you’re at the Resort Beach, beat the rush of the day’s first beachgoers and take in the colors of the dawn behind King Neptune or on the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier. For a hidden-jewel-of-a-view impeded by nothing but the horizon, head to Rudee Inlet, drop a paddleboard or kayak into the water and experience the daybreak by floating right up to it. As dusk approaches and the lazy sun slinks lower in the sky, pack appetizers with friends and make your way out to Chesapeake Bay Beach to relax as the last beams of sunlight disappear from view over the water. Whether you’re just waking up or your night is about to begin, slow down and take it all in. You’ll be glad you did.

BEACH TOWN WITH A DOWNTOWN

Living the life is more than just enjoying our beaches. It also means heading downtown to our thriving metropolitan district, located just a short drive from the Resort Beach. With 19 restaurants, six options for sweet treats and approximately 17 shops, the Virginia Beach Town Center is ideal for spending a leisurely afternoon away from the sand. Shop-hop through Anthropologie, Paper Source, lululemon and Free People, among many others.

8 Local Favorites

After finding your summer dress, cosmetics or winter coat, it’s time for a delicious pick-me-up from The Royal Chocolate and a gourmet coffee or cold-pressed juice from The Daily Grind. After an afternoon spent strolling, cap off the day with an alfresco experience, noshing on Southern comfort food at the newly opened Tupelo Honey Café or sipping on an evening glass of wine at Sonoma Wine Bar and Bistro, where you can choose from more than 400 bottles of wines. We recommend wrapping up the night with belly laughs from a comedy show at The Funny Bone or heading over to the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts for a night of live entertainment. How’s that for the best of both worlds?

EAT LIKE A LOCAVORE

Virginia Beach is unique in that it is surrounded not only by the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay but also by more than 8,000 acres of farmland, providing access to the freshest catch and the freshest just-picked produced. Given our bounty of great food, we take our eating seriously. We also grow oysters once desired by royals and invite visitors to explore the farms in which they’re being harvested, right in the Lynnhaven River, and our blue crab season is one not to be missed. In addition to seafood (did we mention the ahi tuna is caught directly off shore?), our Pungo farming community has 16 You-Pick Farms located right off the coast. Going from the docks to the farms is not only feasible, it’s our way of life, and it shows in the menus we serve up – and enjoy – year-round. B eing a VB locavore means decadent feasting, straight from the hands of the people who grow, catch and cultivate the best of what this coastal city has to offer. So, be sure to pack your appetite and chow down on local flavor! View these illustrated maps online at thedailylifevb.visitvirginiabeach.com

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

OUTDOOR

Fresh

Adventures

For those who long to lace up their running shoes, paddle through the ocean’s waves or sleep under the stars, nature’s gifts await you here. Although our beaches have long beckoned sunbathers and sandcastle-builders, our coastal city is also a wonderland for sports enthusiasts and those desiring more physical adventures, too – something that has consistently made us one of America’s fittest cities. From watersports and hiking to zip-lining and skydiving, Virginia Beach provides that heart-thumping rush sports enthusiasts crave. For more about the active life in Virginia Beach, see Outdoor listings on page 54, or go to VisitVirginiaBeach.com.

WATERLUST

Bottlenose dolphins feast year-round in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and, from May through October, you can get up close and personal with the playful marine mammals during guided kayaking excursions. Guides will lead you to where bay waters meet the Atlantic Ocean, dolphins’ favorite spot for a frolic between feeding grounds, for an incredible photo opportunity and unforgettable – and physically exhilarating – experience. Swimming, surfing, windsurfing, paddle-boarding, jet- skiing, parasailing, kayaking, sailing and boating are all available in the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay, just to name a few ways in which the water might as well be our fitness field. Recreational equipment can be rented from companies near the beaches, while several outfitters also offer surfing camps for those

wanting to learn to “hang 10” in a safe environment. For a different view of the water, try your skills at stand-up paddle-boarding or SUP Barre, and be sure to keep an eye out for special dog-friendly lessons on the water for your fit furry friends, too.

PARK IT RIGHT HERE

Whether you’re into invigorating hikes, adventurous trails or breathtakingly scenic routes, our state parks, wildlife refuges and miles of beaches are sure to have you craving the great outdoors. At First Landing State Park, you can hike through seven distinct ecosystems like a seasoned explorer! In fact, this registered Natural Landmark was the site of the settlers’ first landing in 1607 and has since become Virginia’s most visited state park. Walk along 1.25 miles of beachfront and stop to take in the beauty of dunes, tidal marsh and the maritime forest, or follow 19 miles of interpretive hiking, running and biking trails through protected habitats, including one of the most endangered habitat types in the world, the maritime forest community. Along each trail within the 2,888-acre park, you’ll encounter a different scene, from freshwater ponds and Spanish moss to stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay. Farther south in Sandbridge Beach, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge provides incredible scenic hikes along several trails through dunes, woodland, marshes and ocean beaches. Given its remote location, the park has become a haven for loggerhead sea turtles, peregrine falcons and bald eagles, all of which you’ll have the opportunity to encounter as you explore the 9,108-acre refuge – a local favorite! Feeling extra adventurous? Hike through the refuge to reach False Cape State Park, accessible only by foot or by boat. Featuring six miles of pristine beaches, False Cape is a wildlife watcher’s delight and a destination for more than 300 species of birds, including a snow geese population of 10,000.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

true vb OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES

TREETOP FUN

Thrill-seekers can take their adventuring high up to the trees at the Adventure Park at Virginia Aquarium. The largest of its kind in Virginia, the park features multiple zip lines and aerial ropes challenge courses of varying levels of difficulty. Zip through the air, up to 150 ft., and climb from bridge to bridge for a different view on outdoor fun and self-discovery.

TAKE THE REINS FOR A MAGICAL RIDE

During the fall and winter months, equine enthusiasts can take to the sand and ride down the scenic shorelines through the Resort Beach and beyond during a Virginia Beach Horseback excursion. Beyond the beach, experienced equestrians and first-time riders can explore nature throughout the city during guided trail rides all year long!

ALWAYS A NICE CATCH

With the food-rich Chesapeake Bay adjoining the Atlantic Ocean, fish here are abundant year-round. Tow your boat and choose from several different ramp locations; opt for a full or half-day private charter; or cast a line from one of the four fishing piers. In December, Virginia Beach holds the annual Waterman’s Mid-Atlantic Rockfish Shoot-out, the largest rockfish tournament in the country. That’s not surprising, given that 70 to 90 percent of the world’s rockfish come from the Chesapeake Bay! With so many ways to get a bite, fishing in our waterways offers a year-round challenge for anglers of all skill levels. Just bait your hook and pick your platform.

12 Outdoor Adventures

BEACH PLAY WITHOUT BARRIERS

In Virginia Beach, we believe outdoor adventures are for every body. Designed specifically for children and adults of all physical abilities, JT’s Grommet Island Beach Park & Playground offers soft play sculptures, accessible play equipment and cushioned play surfaces on the sand to ensure everyone can enjoy our beach-centric lifestyle. Beach wheelchairs and scooters are also available for those needing some assistance getting down to the shore.

THIS WAVE IS YOUR WAVE

Surf vibes really are for everyone in Virginia Beach. From the abundance of local surf shops and board shapers to the annual East Coast Surfing Championships at the Resort Beach, the surfing culture is deeply engrained into the fabric of how we live the life year-round. In fact, we were the birthplace of East Coast surfing! As many of our resident wave-riders will tell you, riding the perfect wave here comes at the cost of patience, tenacity and a little bit of luck – and that’s just how we like it. For those hopping on a board for the first time, Virginia Beach often offers the right conditions to safely ease into the action. If you are serious about honing your craft, many lessons and camps are offered at the Resort Beach and Sandbridge Beach, with seasoned pros helping you ride your first East Coast wave. Local surf shops like Pungo Board House, Surf & Adventure Co., Wave Riding Vehicles and VB Surf Sessions offer everything you need, from equipment rentals to surfing lessons and camps. When the surf’s up, so are the good times – you can even soar above the water with personalized lessons at Xtreme U Flyboarding.

Salt Air

Here in Virginia Beach, our culinary scene has been seasoned by salt air. Our location on the southern tip of the Chesapeake Bay gives our coastal community a seafood-centric culinary culture, which boasts a wide array of unique and delectable fare. With the famously rich waters of the Bay, hundreds of inlets snaking through the city and miles of farmland, Virginia Beach is the place for seafood and locally harvested ingredients. We absolutely love our seafood! Can you tell? For more about the Virginia Beach food experience, see Culinary listings on page 58, or go to VisitVirginiaBeach.com/dining.

SEAFOOD DELIGHTS

It’s during the fall and winter months that our seafood craze gets even fresher, with December and January being the peak seasons for rockfish (striped bass), striper, black sea bass, flounder, speckled trout and blueline tilefish – all available within 50 miles. Our bounty has even earned us the title of “Rockfish Capital of the World” (we celebrate with an annual rockfish shootout every winter!). That’s not surprising though, since the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay is considered to be the largest and most biologically diverse estuary in the U.S., yielding more seafood than any of the country’s 840 estuaries, making seafood-lovers like us incredibly lucky. As if those underwater creatures weren’t enough, there are also oysters – beautifully harvested Lynnhaven oysters. Once coveted around the world and served to presidents and royalty for their size, saltiness and gentle zing, these delicious little bivalves are being harvested right in the Lynnhaven River, where visitors have the chance to take a boat tour of an oyster farm and enjoy a unique Chef’s Table experience right on the water – waders included! But don’t let us do all the talking. Captain John Smith himself described the bounty of the area when he spent three days in Virginia Beach shortly before establishing Jamestown in 1607, surviving primarily off fish, oysters and turtles, an experience he described in his logs: “Oysters lay as thick as stones,” with the Bay and rivers containing more sturgeon “than could be devoured by dog or man.” Cheers to that, Capt. Smith!

FOOD FINDS

Bay Local Eatery serves up one-of-a-kind breakfast and lunch dishes in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay Beach. With a menu inspired by family recipes and our local watermen’s culture, visitors and locals alike can savor a distinct taste of the bay life, as well as cold-pressed cocktails and an unlike-any-other, soft-shell crab-topped “Bloody Blue Mary.”

Head south to the Sandbridge Beach area for a Sunset Kayak Dinner with Surf & Adventure Co. You’ll take an unforgettable paddle through Pungo to one of our favorite local spots, Blue Pete’s, for an evening of yummy coastal fare on the Back Bay. And don’t worry about overeating; your return trip is by car, so dig in!

Doc Taylor’s, once a doctor’s home office circa 1939, is such a local favorite, that the menu features several items named after regular customers. Today, the historic building in the heart of the Resort Beach area provides comfort breakfast and lunch food, Bloody Marys and mimosas. Insider’s tip: Arrive early because there’s usually a line out the door! It’s that good.

COASTAL COUNTRYSIDE CUISINE

When you think of Virginia Beach, you probably think of sand, sun and surf, but we’re actually also home to a vast amount of farmland and fresh local produce, all available for visitors to explore – and pick – year-round. Yes, you can easily go from beachside to countryside within 15 minutes! The Pungo farming community, adjacent to Sandbridge Beach, is home to 8,000 acres of farmland, including 16 You-Pick Farms. Depending on the season, you can pick your own bushel of strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, kale, cabbage or even your own bouquet of wildflowers! Stopping by Pungo’s roadside stands or exploring one of the area’s working farms makes for an adventurous outing and is a great alternative for getting away from the beach – all while loading up on some local treats.

VISIT A FOOD LAB DOWN ON THE FARM

Within the farming community of Pungo lies New Earth Farm, an organic and educational working farm that allows you to get your hands dirty while learning about local produce, sustainable farming and cooking. Learn to make cheese, kombucha, shear sheep and more during their regularly scheduled classes, or sign up for cooking classes led by some of the area’s top chefs at the farm’s Food Lab to learn how local ingredients come together to influence our culinary scene. Even kids can join in on the fun during regularly led kid classes and within the farm’s learning garden.

THE LOCAL HARVEST EXPERIENCE

Virginia Beach’s first farmer-owned restaurant, Commune, provides a locally harvested menu and coffee bar that has already become a favorite local communal spot (pun intended). This rustic-chic café is all about bringing people together with beautiful and delicious recipes, offering warm hospitality and thoughtfully executed, creative justpicked cuisine. And it really doesn’t get much fresher; all of their ingredients come from farms within 100 miles and the garden out back, which it shares with its neighbor, Esoteric, another local favorite. In fact, owner Kevin Jamison dreamt up his vision for Commune while working at New Earth Farm.

SAMPLE WHAT’S IN SEASON

On Saturday mornings, you’ll find locals and visitors alike meandering through the ViBe Creative District at the Old Beach Farmers Market, just blocks away from the Resort Beach. This warm-weather favorite hosts vendors serving an array of produce and delicious bites and cocktails, as well as offering the opportunity to mingle with chefs and purveyors. The vendors rotate every weekend, so there is always something new to discover, inspiring people to meet and offering delicious ingredients to sample. Load up the car because kids, dogs and goats are all welcomed!

BUT FIRST, COFFEE!

We are incredibly lucky to have some of the most passionate and dedicated coffee houses in the area, all with the same shared passion for producing a delicious cup of artisanal joe. Three Ships Coffee Bar & Roastery, fittingly located in the ViBe Creative District, does everything with an artistic hand in-house. Their name pays homage to local history and the mighty, adventurous spirit of the first settlers in our area. Roast Rider Coffee + Tea has quickly become a destination hangout spot for locals, where their chic causal interior entices you to cozy up with a sweet treat and stay a while. Another local favorite, The Daily Grind, located within Town Center, is known for its delicious coffee and unique events, from salsa-dancing classes to painting and drawing sessions and open mic nights.

ARTS & CULTURE

ARTS &

Culture Here, the art of the beach life isn’t only found on the sand. From the visual arts to handcrafted creations and comedy shows to musical concerts, our arts and culture have claimed their spot in the sun. We encourage you to sit back, relax and enjoy the show. See Arts & Culture listings on page 59 and online at VisitVirginiaBeach.com

THE ART OF VB

The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), located within the ViBe Creative District offers regularly changing exhibits, ensuring you’ll see something different every time. Exhibits feature painting, sculpture, photography, glass, video and other visual media from internationally acclaimed, as well as renowned local and regional, artists. The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, located in Town Center, hosts nationally renowned entertainers and provides a home for the area’s finest performing arts organizations. With fewer than 100 ft. separating the front of the stage and the farthest seat in the house, flawless acoustics and comfortable interior, the Sandler Center creates an intimate atmosphere that allows the audience to actually experience performances, not just attend them.

VB BY HAND

Beyond the boardwalk and tucked within the eclectic neighborhoods of the Resort Beach, Virginia Beach’s culture shines through in the emerging ViBe Creative District, an enclave of art galleries, museums, shops and restaurants that showcase some of our most talented artisans, who not only live the life year-round but also bring it to life in the form of canvases, jewelry, custom surfboards, locally crafted coffee and more. Within the ViBe, you’ll find an array of hometown favorites, including a local roaster and coffee shop, a farmers market, restaurants, a leather bag shop, boutiques and galleries, as well as special events throughout the year.

YEAR-ROUND CELEBRATIONS

In May, we celebrate all things strawberry, and at the 34th Annual Strawberry Festival, you can eat the fruit of honor in more than 50 different ways, while also indulging in a pie-eating contest, strawberry bake-off, continuous entertainment on three stages, a parade and one of the largest carnivals on the East Coast. Following the festival, be sure to browse Pungo’s 16 You-Pick farms for sustainable, local produce and farm-crafted treats to take home as a sweet souvenir. During Memorial Day weekend, the beach transforms into a beachfront bash of red, white and blue. Being home to some of the largest military bases in the country calls for a huge weekend-long salute and celebration of our Armed Forces. Hosted by the USO, the Patriotic Festival, a three-day event in June, presents live performances from national touring artists and has become one of the most popular summer festivals on the East Coast. King Neptune is known as the keeper of our Resort Beach – and if you’ve seen him, you know he’s hard to miss! Standing tall at 34 ft., the majestic bronze statue welcomes locals and visitors alike at the gateway of Neptune Park, located on the boardwalk at 31st Street. The king’s reign over our city gives us reason to celebrate the beach life annually during the Neptune Festival, a commemoration made up of more than 40 events across all three of our beaches during September and October. Enjoy art from around the nation at the Neptune Art & Craft Show, sip local Virginia wines during tasting events, catch a wave, run an 8K or see how sculptures come to life in the sand during the 10-day International Sand Sculpting Championships.

IGOR’S CUSTOM

You’ll see the work of this local favorite for crafted-toorder hand-painted signs and pin-striping all around town. It’s all done the old-fashioned way, so you won’t find any computers in Igor’s studio. To have something personalized, just stop in and tell him what you want.

NORTH END BAG CO.

These coveted handmade leather bags are crafted from scratch using a variety of multi-era vintage sewing machines. From first sketch until the sewing machine whirs to a stop, no detail is overlooked in building these timeless and sturdy bags, which make the perfect companions for your next VB adventure.

FIRST LANDING WOODWORKS

These fine wood heirloom quality products and furniture are hand made by surfing champion Philip Goold and photographer/graphic designer/school teacher Adam Roth. Most items, including bottle openers, oyster-shucking knives and furniture, are crafted from their signature black walnut which is distinguished by the preservation of the tree’s natural color and living edge.

THREE BEACHES

THREE

Beaches It’s true. Virginia Beach is more than just a beach. In fact, we have three – each with its own distinct personality, kind of like you! Each offers unique ways for experiencing the beach, whether on the ocean or on the bay. Which will you choose? Here, the beach life is exactly what you need it to be. Sometimes we come to be right in the heart of the action. Other times, we need to get far away from it all. And then there are moments we just want to dip our toes into the experience at our own pace. Virginia Beach knows what really makes vacation dreams come true: options. Each is blessed with beautiful, sandy shores, yet our three unique beach experiences are distinctly different thanks to the lifestyle of each area’s authentic local culture. Boardwalk treks, surf shops and fun-filled days at the Resort Beach. Water sports, local hideaways and nature walks down in Sandbridge. Long lazy days, dockside dining and sunset views along the Chesapeake Bay. With unique experiences just a few miles in each direction, you’re free to choose the beach vibe that works for you every day.

22 Three Beaches

Resort BEACH

To ride the wave of energy Virginia Beach is famous for, head to the oceanfront Resort Beach, where the three-mile boardwalk has given rise to a bustling vacation scene. Born of a surf culture that values access for all, the boardwalk is home to every kind of classic beach vibe. From waterfront dining to seashell shopping, frosty treats to surry bikes, amusements to street performers, it’s a family-friendly atmosphere. Where luxury hotels share the stage with local businesses that have endured for generations, the welcome is warm and real. With fresh coastal dining in abundance, and local trolley service making it easy to reach nearby attractions like the Virginia Aquarium, the Resort Beach keeps everyone entertained and happy.

Sandbridge

Chesapeake Bay

For outdoor adventure lovers and solitude seekers alike, Sandbridge Beach feels just right. This favorite day trip destination for locals is just 15 miles south of the Resort Beach. Thanks to the buffer provided by Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, the short drive to Sandbridge is a journey to another world. Here, you’ll find an isolated barrier island feeling, with wide beaches dotted by cottages and vacation getaways that you know are full of love and laughter. Surrounded by nature and easy access to trails and waterways to explore, outdoor outfitters are part of the local scene, along with some great restaurants. You can even combine the two with a kayak dinner at Blue Pete’s. A little ways inland, there’s more local food culture and rural heritage to discover at working farms like New Earth Farm and events like the annual Pungo Strawberry Festival.

If chilling out is your goal, there’s a getaway waiting just for you at Chesapeake Bay Beach. On the north end of Virginia Beach’s Atlantic shore, the calming transition is evident right there in the waves. Bay waves don’t crash; they lap, creating a quiet your soul can feel. Combine that relaxed vibe with the laid-back ease of dockside crab houses, friendly watering holes and the area’s favorite dog-friendly hiking destination, First Landing State Park, and you’ve got the best kind of chill. Just when you think the day is over, the sun sets over the water, and your beached-out bliss is complete.

ENTERTAINMENT

BEACH

Entertainment The perfect vacation is a balancing act, with equal parts familiar relaxation and new experiences. While the coastal setting does its part to deliver the relaxation, Virginia Beach really excels at bringing the excitement of experiencing something new. Hosting festivals year-round, attracting major talent and cultivating an upbeat atmosphere where smile-inducing moments just happen naturally, we inspire good times in a variety of ways. See Entertainment listings on page 61 of this guide and online at VisitVirginiaBeach.com.

FREE (OR NEARLY FREE) FUN

The beach life is all-inclusive, so watching your budget is no reason to be left out of the fun. Of course, there’s never a charge to access the beaches here, so our most spectacular attraction provides hours of free fun. Add oceanfront parks, a visit to King Neptune and a splash under a boardwalk shower, and you’ll imagine the seagulls are saying “cha-ching” on your behalf. But there’s so much more – throughout the summer, oceanfront evenings come alive with all kinds of free performances thanks to Beach Street U.S.A. pup peteers, musicians, magicians, jugglers and more who entertain crowds on the sidewalks of Atlantic Avenue from 17th to 25th Streets seven nights a week. All year long, the boardwalk is home to free festivals and cultural events, celebrating everything from seafood to Caribbean music. And no beach vacation is complete without a visit to the Virginia Beach Amusement Park, where admission is free and ride tickets are piggy-bank friendly.

Beach Music & More

JAMS BY THE OCEAN

Without waves, we wouldn’t get to experience music at all. Here, sound waves and ocean waves are totally in sync, and you can be part of it at oceanfront music festivals, concerts and performances throughout the year. From weekend-long events featuring multiple national acts on giant stages set up on the sand, to the happy surprise of hearing a choral group, symphony or small combo do their thing at one of the park stages along Atlantic Avenue, the variety is impressive. HISTORY

BEACH

Historic Sites When John Smith and the Virginia Company of London set sail for the New World in December of 1606, the future Jamestown settlers didn’t know they’d be blazing a trail for explorers like you. But when they finally arrived in April of 1607 at what is now Cape Henry in Virginia Beach, nothing could stop them from coming ashore, stretching their legs and enjoying the feeling of solid ground. That sense of a rock-solid foundation is one we don’t take for granted, thanks to reminders at historic sites throughout our city. See History listings on page 62 and online at VisitVirginiaBeach.com.

BEACH HISTORY

When you visit the site of the earliest settlers’ landing, where the First Landing Cross stands to mark the spot, you’ll be in viewing distance of the Cape Henry Lighthouses. One was the first federally funded lighthouse commissioned by the United States in 1792; its “newer” black and white cast iron neighbor was built in 1881 and has been doing its lifesaving duty ever since. Further south, right on the boardwalk, you can learn more about lifesaving at the Old Coast Guard Station, where galleries tell tales of shipwrecks and heroic acts. Also on the boardwalk, the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum preserves both the last remaining boardwalk cottage and a collection of wildfowl art and artifacts, revealing much about early Virginia Beach and our present culture.

HISTORIC HOMES

It goes without saying that the years since the first landing have seen major changes in lifestyle, but they’re yours to experience on a tour of historic homes. Near the banks of the Lynnhaven River, the Thoroughgood House (circa 1719) is one of the oldest brick homes in America and reveals how a wealthy Virginia colonist would have lived. The Lynnhaven House (circa 1725) is somewhat more modest but a reveals the care and quality the owner put into its construction. At the Georgian/ Federal style Francis Land House (circa 1805), you’ll get a sense of plantation life in the early 19th Century, including period gardens. At Ferry Plantation (circa 1830) you can tour the restored home and learn colorful stories of the city’s past – ask about Grace Sherwood, the witch of Pungo.

Stories MILITARY HISTORY

From the earliest ships to arrive in 1607 and defend themselves against native attacks near Cape Henry, to the 1781 Battle off the Capes marking a turning point of the American Revolution, to the 1807 U.S. vs. England skirmish off Lynnhaven Inlet that preceded the War of 1812, our waters have not always been calm. But you may be surprised to learn just how close to our shores the U.S. tanker Tiger was when it was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in 1942. Or the inland location of a prisoner of war camp that held 6,000 prisoners over two years during World War II. In fact, military history is kind of a specialty here, where NAS Oceana hosts the East Coast’s only Master Jet Base,

and flyovers are a regular (and thrilling) occurrence. For in-depth history, the Military Aviation Museum rivals any of its kind with a large collection of WWI and WWII era aircraft. Near the oceanfront at 25th Street, The Naval Aviation Monument pays tribute to three historic aviation eras.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN HISTORY

For insight into the fight for Civil Rights in education, pay a visit to the Princess Anne County Training School/Union Kempsville High School Museum. Exhibits here tell the story of the founding of the area’s first high school for African Americans, created by community fund raising in the 1930s, and its continuation until the 1969 integration of Virginia Beach public schools. For a journey of faith, visit Ebenezer Baptist Church, established in 1860 by slaves, and Morning Star Baptist Church, founded in 1892 – both are in the process of collecting memorabilia and artifacts to share their history. The experience of enslaved people is also part of the story you’ll find at the Francis Land House and the Thoroughgood House.

WELLNESS

BEACH

Wellness All is well at the beach. One of the major benefits of being surrounded by water is being able to take advantage of its restorative healing qualities. We value our natural surroundings and pay tribute to them in our pursuit of a healthy and relaxed lifestyle – and you can, too! See Wellness listings on page 63 and online at VisitVirginiaBeach.com.

NO ORDINARY WORKOUT

Getting in the water on the Atlantic or on the Chesapeake Bay is an obvious way to experience wellness by the water, and there are plenty of unique and serene spots across our 35 miles of coastline for basking in tranquility to the soundtrack of the ocean waves. Workout by the ocean at Hillier Ignite Fitness Park or greet the day with a sunrise yoga session. Step it up a notch with yoga on a SUP (standup paddleboard) or embark on a meditative sunset kayaking excursion. You may even get the chance to ride alongside our dolphin friends while taking in an incredible view and getting a full-body workout.

MAKE THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION

It’s rumored that Virginia Beach’s pristine surroundings and serene spot at the meeting point of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean were the reason legendary mystic Edgar Cayce chose us as the home to his wellness center, which he built here in 1931. Today, Cayce’s Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) is the hub for all things holistic living. Located just across the street from the beach, the A.R.E. boasts a newly renovated spa and restaurant and hosts year-round retreats, speakers and classes tailored to inspire and enlighten the mind, body and soul, many of which are derived from the beach’s natural properties.

YOU DESERVE THIS

Spa treatments offer a great opportunity to take time away from it all – even while on vacation! Relax and refresh your senses with a range of treatments at various local spas. You can even enjoy a view of the Atlantic Ocean at the private spa tower at Beach Spa. A quick trip inland from the Resort area or Sandbridge Beach, the Founders Inn & Spa provides an array of facials, massages and full-body treatments, while also providing award-winning meals and overnight accommodations. Some local bed-and-breakfasts, like the Barclay Cottage, will also happily accommodate a spa treatment for you during your stay. So sit back, relax and let the beach do the rest.

Gliding on top of the water while listening to upbeat music and awakening our senses surrounded by nature, all while enjoying the company of fellow wellness enthusiasts? Sign us up! Whitney Lee, a Virginia Beach native and certified yoga and barre instructor, blended her love for the ocean with her love for fitness, and voila, SUP Barre was born – yup, right here in Virginia Beach! Today, she’s taking full-body and core-strengthening exercises out of the studio and onto a paddleboard on the water at First Landing State Park. Classes run Monday through Saturday, vary by season and are ideal for all ages and skill levels. Even your four-legged fur-baby can join in on the water fun, thanks to SUP with Your Pup classes.

AMAZING RACES

It’s no surprise that we’ve been consistently ranked among America’s Fittest Cities. With countless races – from 5Ks and 10Ks to halfand full marathons – Virginia Beach makes for one amazing track. Early in the year, Shamrock Marathon Weekend offers plenty of running action for beginners and marathon trainees alike, with six running events and three special challenges, all culminating with the Shamrock Marathon and Half-Marathon, which provide a scenic course set alongside the Atlantic Ocean. Later in the year, just in time for Labor Day festivities, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series arrives at the beach. The weekend hosts a Health & Fitness Expo and three running events (“Mile on the Sand,” 5K and Half-Marathon), all culminating with live performances on the sand during the Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series, during the American Music Festival, the largest outdoor music event on the East Coast. In the fall, the Anthem Wicked 10K boasts a challenging and scenic course and fittingly includes a costume contest and post-race party on the beach. Cap off your running schedule for the year with another festive feat. The Surf-n-Santa Five Miler provides a magical trot unlike any other, as runners dash through the oceanfront under the Holiday Lights at the Beach.

When you stay in Virginia Beach, all of Coastal Virginia is your oyster. That means you’re just a short drive away from amazing family attractions and historic destinations that make your beach vacation one for the ages. See Coastal Virginia listings on page 64-65 and online at VisitVirginiaBeach.com.

NEARBY NORFOLK

Virginia Beach shares more than a border with the neighboring harbor town of Norfolk; we share a love of the water and how it connects us to great adventures. As home to Naval Station Norfolk, the world’s largest naval installation, Norfolk has a storied past and a vibrant local arts scene. Whether you’re exploring walk-able downtown Norfolk’s eclectic food scene and high-end shopping or taking advantage of cultural events and destinations like the Chrysler Museum of Art and Norfolk Botanical Gardens, you get the sense of a city that’s constantly evolving. Ever-present is its nautical heritage, which you can explore on a visit to Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin or onboard a variety of river cruises. Sports lovers can root for the home team throughout the year as the Norfolk Tides take the diamond and Norfolk Admirals take the ice to enthusiastic crowds each season.

TIME TRAVEL & OTHER THRILLS

From Virginia Beach, you can travel over 400 years in just about an hour. No, not by supersonic light-speed highway, but on a day trip to experience another time in some of the nation’s most historic settings. The settlers who first landed in Virginia Beach in 1607 traveled up the James River to create America’s first permanent English colony in Jamestown. Today, you can walk through the reconstructed settlement to get an idea of what it took to survive during Pocahontas’ time. In nearby Colonial Williamsburg, you’ll experience the pre-Revolution America through a living history area that’s world-renowned for authentic detail. Shopping and dining are just as charming, thanks to cobblestone streets, gracious hospitality and stylish goods inspired by colonial life. Though there is a certain refinement to the colonial style, it’s not all elegance and candlelight around here. Williamsburg is also known for delivering high adrenaline, fun-loving excitement, thanks to Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Water Country USA. Splashy rides, world-class roller coasters and entertaining shows bring the thrills all summer, while Busch Gardens’ popular Howl-O-Scream and Christmas Town events offer familyfriendly reasons to visit after summer ends.

Beach VIRGINIA’S EASTERN SHORE

How many times in your life will you experience one of the Wonders of the World? On a day trip to the Eastern Shore, you’ll do it twice in one day when you cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, designated one of the Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World in 1965. You’ll realize that the honor still holds up when you travel more than 17 miles of bridges and tunnels, descending below the waves and rising again to feel that you’re driving in the middle of the ocean. Once you reach the other side, you’ll be treated to the rarified quiet of the Eastern Shore communities, where farm life and coastal life have conspired to keep tradition strong. Whether you only go as far as Cape Charles for small town charm, play a round of golf or travel north to where the wild ponies roam on Chincoteague Island, you’ll discover how diverse Coastal Virginia can be.

CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA

Take a side trip for interactive play with the littlest ones on a visit to the Children’s Museum of Virginia in nearby Portsmouth. Giant bubbles and being in charge of the wheels on the bus are favorite exhibits for the toddlers. The extensive antique toy and train collection is a major draw for kids of all ages.

WALLOPS ISLAND

You’re fascinated by suborbital research programs, whether you know it or not. What you do know is that rockets are cool. Wallops Island on Virginia’s Eastern Shore is where NASA regularly launches rockets that play a critical role in gathering data and testing technology for the scientific community. In addition to launch viewing opportunities, the NASA Wallops Island Visitor Center offers public programs to inspire and inform your inner space enthusiast.

MARINERS MUSEUM

Artifacts and vessels will have you dreaming of the high seas at the Mariners Museum & Park in Newport News. From a Titanic life vest to rare ship’s figurehead carvings, the romantic lore of the sea is well represented here. Handcrafted ship models and full size small crafts keep it real with beautiful details and precision. Make it an authentic history trip by viewing the USS Monitor exhibition and traveling back to Virginia Beach by way of the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel, crossing through the waters where the Civil War ironclad battle took place more than 150 years ago.

ACCOMMODATIONS AND CAMPGROUNDS The City of Virginia Beach and the Virginia Beach Hotel Association want your stay to be happy and carefree. Some properties may not be open year round, so it is best to make a reservation prior to arriving. When you make a reservation at one of our hotels or motels, a deposit s ecured by check, credit card or money order may be required. Reservations are confirmed upon receipt of your deposit by the hotel. F amiliarize yourself with and inquire about cancellation policies, early checkouts, refunds, number of people in the room and any fees a ssociated with lodging stay, as policies vary from one hotel to another.

EARLY CHECKOUTS AND REFUNDS Accommodations may require up to, but no more than, 72 hours notice when a guest requests a change in a previously set departure date. Weekly, monthly and group rates are subject to the confirmation or contract.

CHANGES IN RESERVATIONS Accommodations may require up to seven (7) days written notice of cancellation prior to arrival date.

CHANGES IN RATES This publication was assembled in the fall of 2016. Due to a number of factors, it is impossible to ensure that the published rates for a hotel will not change. The publisher has no control over this situation. Holiday and weekend rates may be slightly higher. Please inquire about rates when making reservations.

PLEASE BE AWARE that some lodging establishments do charge an administrative fee for cancellation of accommodations.

MINIMUM STAYS Some hotels require two-, three- or four-day minimum stays for confirmed reservations, i ncluding weekends and holidays. When a refund is due, standard bookkeeping practices are observed. Refund checks are usually mailed from the hotel’s business o ffice. Refunds are not usually made from the registration desk.

For further information and assistance with accommodations, contact the Virginia Beach Visitor Information Center at 1-800-VA BEACH (1-800-822-3224) or (757) 385-SURF(7873). The City of Virginia Beach has relied on information supplied by our tourist-related b usinesses and cannot guarantee accuracy. in
