ear CRPD Patrons, It is my pleasure to introduce the new Cordova Recreation and Park District Recreation Guide for Fall/Winter 2012-13. You will notice many changes in this season’s guide; primarily more pictures, more color, and less writing. If you would like more detailed information regarding classes or facilities, we would like to direct you to our new website at www.crpd. com. Here you will find expanded class descriptions and additional information. In addition to our new website, you will also find our new registration system. ReCPro will expedite customer access to programs and classes as well as allow us to communicate with our users in a proactive fashion. This will allow greater convenience for on-site and web-based payment, reducing your travel time. In addition to the Recreation Guide and ReCPro, the district continues to go through many changes as we strive to better serve the CRPD community. If you see something in the Guide that you like, we hope that you would take advantage of the offering. If nothing catches your eye, but you have an idea for a class or program, we would love to hear from you. It is our hope that you take time to Enjoy Life’s Simple Pleasures with the Cordova Recreation and Park District. Sincerely, James M. Rodems District Administrator

home in the trees A Reason to recreate by Doug critchfield
S
teve Ebert (former Park Superintendent) was tragically taken from us in January of this year. His passing has made me reflect on how delicate life is and how much I need to cherish each day. I feel a greater desire to enrich the relationships that I have with my loved ones. I want to be kinder and more patient with them. Time has a way of healing the sense of loss, but as with so many who knew and loved him, Steve’s legacy will forever remain etched in my mind and heart. Steve loved nature. He and I discussed many times how we felt that experiences in nature help balance the inner soul. They provide a deflation of stress, connection to our maker, and a slowing of time to a manageable pace. He worked very hard to provide and care for the numerous trees and natural elements in our park system. His love of trees was evidenced in his personal and professional life. He was referred to by his nephew as a “Giant Amongst the Sequoias”. I echo that sentiment. As a father of young children, I have observed that outside exploration is one of the most valuable and anticipated experiences. When in nature, simple things like a stick or shiny rock fosters a sense of wonder and imagination. Cares of the world dissipate in the midst of the rocks, grasses and trees. So much of what we need in our busy lives and families is within a short walking distance from home. The Cordova Recreation and Park District is blessed with some of the most wonderful parks in the country. The American River Parkway is only a few short blocks from many of our neighborhoods. Each park has something different to offer. If it is a walk in the trees, running with your dog at the Hagan Dog Park, or participation in an organized sports activity, parks are a place to renew and refresh your inner soul. I admonish you to live the legacy that Steve left behind. Get out and find yourself in nature. If you have children, give them the opportunity to experience the wonders of the outdoors. Take a few minutes each day to find something new and uplifting in our parks. Give yourself a chance to recreate your inner soul. Take time to look at the trees. I still hear Steve’s kind voice whispering in my mind “I feel like I have come home in the trees” when I am amongst them. I’ll see you in our parks!
