FLYING ON A GOOD IDEA: NEEL KHOKHANI

They say all it takes is a good idea, and when Neel Khokhani had a brilliant one he assumed his boss would be delighted to hear it. Instead, the flight instructor got the boot. “Yeah, absolutely, I got sacked,” he says. “I was 22 and made a few suggestions on how to improve the business, only to be told that if I thought I could do better, I should go out and start my own company.”

Eight years on, Soar Aviation is now Australia’s biggest flying school with 67 aircraft, three airport campuses in Melbourne, Sydney and more than 500 students, including the great-great-nephew of aviation pioneer Charles Kingsford Smith. KhokhanI, now 30, has built a $66million fortune and is deservedly ranked 51st in his debut on Australia’s Young Rich List.

NEEL KHOKHANI : SELFMADE ENTREPRENEUR

Soar Aviation was founded in 2013 with the goal of addressing the global shortage of commercial pilots by offering training and accreditation through a Victorian-based flight school. Headed up by 28-year-old and sole founder Neel Khokhani, Soar has experienced astonishing growth of 586% over the past three years, posting a revenue of over $12 million in the last financial year. The founder believes the business’ success can be largely attributed to its more modern approach to flight training, eschewing the more “muscle car”-like planes such as Cesnas and Pipers for a fleet of 45 light sports aircrafts, which contribute to lower fuel costs and lower emissions.
