Architectural Portfolio Neel Mewada
About Me I like exploring different materials. I have been working closely with materials like bamboo, timber and mud. For me sketching is a medium to resolve joineries and visualize the design. I believe the context is as important as the built form itself. Hence believe in integration of the landscape and the built form to enhance activities and create spaces in the design. I am interested to carry forward my learning in that direction. I am keen to learn about construction details, sequence of construction, and integration of surroundings to the building, forms and spaces.

The design problem was a build an exploration center for students to get their hands on with timber as a material. The site is located in Patan near AgaraDarwaja. The site on the longer edge has fort wall which I have tried to preserve.
Initially , I took Gandhi Ashram as my case study and then redesigned its elements using timber. Which created better understanding of timber as construction material I derived a system and resolved various joineries for constructing a structural system. it helped me resolving connections of steel and timber. I have used steel cable as tension member to resole my structure.I have created similar gutters for my drainage system.
Process From the derivation of my case study ,I derived a unit which resulted in hexagonal reciprocal system. A reciprocal system is a system where each member in the unit is supporting as well as supported.
Reapetation The roof was created by constructing another reciprocal system above the basic reciprocal system. The enclosure system is shown in the image on right.

As a part of my working drawing , This case study helped me to create better understanding of joineries of timber for my studio project. It helped me in deriving angular joineries and understanding the enclosure system. It helped me to resolve connections of two or more construction materials with different properties.
Photograph of the Building the images show how 6 wooden member are coming together with the help of customized joinery made of MDF and steel plates. it also shows the flow of space happening due to enclosure system.
The above images show the 3d model on Sketch helped me to gain better understanding of the space
Formation of Spaces Different forms were created individually and were further composed in such a way that it forms art gallery

Balsa was used to create interesting spaces with play in volume and light as a part of workshop.
Introduction to the discipline of Mud A seating was created as a collaborative work in Mud workshop. The workshop helped in understanding mud as a material and its sequence of construction.
Wattle and daub was practiced as a part of our mud workshop. Wattle and daub is a composite building material used for making walls, in which a woven lattice of wooden strips called wattle is daubed with a sticky material made of some combination of wet soil, clay, sand, animal dung and straw.
Various Joineries were explored and created to understand the mterial and develop the hand skills before the actual construction of the shed.

6 Realated Study Programme A walk through Himalayas
The settlements of Naddi and Bal near Mcloedganj in Himachal Pradesh were studied and documented during our winter school.
Naddi Various vernacular methods were studied and documented. The winter school helped in understanding the basics of vernacular architecture in hilly regions.

Exploring Elements out of Timber
8 Building Construction and Details Exploration elements out of timber
A space was created using different elements of timber. The elements such as door, flooring, truss, windows, supporting members were designed keeping the properties of timber in mind.A space was created with composition of various elements of timber. Timber Scissor Truss was designed that adds height to the room, as one of the elements of timber.

Basic Design Abstraction
The shoe abstractions were further divided into grids. The grids were further abstracted and presented using poshe as a technique.
Abstract Paintings abstract painting of the nautre
City Different elements of the City were considered and repeated in such a way that the abstract drawing of the city was created.

Form Making
10 Basic Design Form Making
This is the part of our basic design exercise were the idea was a create skeleton using repetitions and geometry and then creating enclosures to study the shadows of the same.
Step : 1
Step : 2
Step : 3
Repetitions This was part of my basic design. The exercise was to create a module and repeat it in such a ways that it opens up, with each opening module the form of the whole changes and different patterns are created.
