FINAL PROJECT: TRAVELLER’S HOSTEL
HERITAGE RETROFIT CONCEPT:
The Baoli was a water reservoir and by default a place for social interac.on ,a stopover for the travellers. Our basic concept was revival of the Baoli for the purpose for which it was built, however in contemporary terms. Also to use water as a means of aRrac.ng people back to the Baoli like it did years ago. Hence we decided to play upon this idea and which led us to a traveller’s café. A place for travellers to meet in the real world not on social media. , exchange travel stories, make friends, even connect with future travel partners and make travel plans. ARend interac.ve talks and workshops by travellers, photographers and writers. Have a library that can be referred to for travel books including guides, coffee table books and travelogues enabling travellers to make well informed choices. The spaces have been associated with the same elements with as before but with a contemporary spin .

INTERVENTIONS: The water storage area has been converted into a 3 level water feature system having different water features at the t h r e e l e v e l s . W a t e r installa.ons have been added as a means to aRract visitors in the similar manner in which the water stored in the Baoli did years ago .
The steps can be used as a sea.ng system with a stream of water running down leading to the lowest arch. having one of the water installa.ons.
While some of the deeper niches have been used for d i s p l a y i n g b o o k s t h e shallow niches have been e x t e n d e d u s i n g a temporary structure and are used for photography exhibi.on purposes.

The covered well is being used as a light and show fountain feature as well as a vantage point from where the view of the city can be enjoyed. Also since this space has a clear visibility the water fountain would also act as a means to aRract visitors
The last arch has been l e v e l l e d t o c r e a t e a p l a \ o r m w h e r e b o o k r e a d i n g s , s i g n i n g s , jamming sessions and other events can be held.
The side pathways have been extended so as to allow visitors to walk comfortably around the Baoli. Allowing them to visit the niches.
A café has been introduced with and open and cohesive sea.ng allowing people to interact and share their t r a v e l s t o r i e s a n d experiences.

WASHROOM REDESIGN
PROJECT BRIEF:
The ďŹ rst step of this exercise was to chose an exis.ng wet area i.e.. Either a kitchen or a washroom. I chose my hostel washroom. The washroom is used by me and my room mate. We have been using this washroom for 2 years now and have been facing a lot of problems. Thus, I thought of redesigning it.

FINAL PROJECT: Traveller’s hostel AIM OF THE PROJECT •
•
To provide a place for travellers, which will cater to all their travel needs under one roof. Thereby developing a mul. func.onal programme, a traveller’s hub. This would include a hostel, service apartments, medita.on centre and traveller’s cafe. This traveller’s hub will aim at providing facili.es for traveller’s of all ages and different budget slabs.
WHY THIS PROJECT • • •
Exis.ng hostels in Delhi are at a very small scale and do not cater to all traveller’s needs. No traveller’s hostel , service apartments and travel cafe co-exist. More over none of the hostels provide for a cafe that is open to all. The hostels are very restric.ve in terms of providing mul. func.onal facili.es.

A landscaped courtyard is a research based design element, that promotes social interac.on, encourages increased outdoor usage and provides a sense of connec.on with the world beyond the brick walls. All spaces on the ground floor respond to the courtyard , with glass facades and openings looking into the courtyard. The recep.on is placed at one end, where the visitor crosses the en.re courtyard, giving him an experience of the en.re hostel. The glass facades visually connect the visitor with all the ac.vi.es happening in the space. The privacy level increase with each floor. Restric.ng all public spaces on ground and first floor.
