Our winter issue of New England Finery is a visual feast of welcoming images that speak to the art of entertaining, opening up our homes, and inviting others in. And if gift giving is a part of your gratitude, there are ideas on where to shop and what to consider when expressing that you care. By decorating our home’s interiors, offering a place for guests to rest, and incorporating an element of surprise into our everyday lives, we are somehow able to forget that just outside our windows there is a winter chill in the air. I invite you to look to these pages for inspiration that speaks to slowing down and enjoying the presence of others in the comfort of home. Wishing you a season of peace and joy.

DESIGNER ... Rachel Reider For my clients that are afraid of using color and pattern but would like to incorporate some into their home, I suggest starting small with accents – a few pillows, a piece of artwork or a small upholstered piece. It feels like less of a risk to them and they can easily be swapped out. In general I tend to upholster larger pieces in more neutral fabrics and save the strong pops of color and pattern for accent pieces. This also allows you the flexibility to easily change up your color scheme without starting from scratch! www.rachelreider.com

DESIGNER ... Darlene A. Gentle of Turtle Bay Interiors Using multiple patterns provides a complex and often rich tapestry-like aesthetic effect. It can solve design dilemmas, too, as in the case of this room. This dining room serves as the central axis point for all other rooms, therefore it was a deliberate choice to have a darker pattern on the floor that is more forgiving to this refined, yet heavily trafficked area. www.turtlebayinteriors.com HOMEOWNER ... graphic designer Brenda Adams As a graphic designer the play of patterns and textures against each other has always held a special fascination for me. I especially love the wallpapers that were designed in the early 18th and 19th centuries. The animal print rug against the Scalamandre wallpaper was an exceptionally brilliant choice. The two fabric chairs accent and ground the whole look. My dining room is a joy to come home to every day! www.adamsdesignboston.com

Company’ s Coming ... When decorating for the holidays I think there should be a celebratory mood – elegant, joyful and sparkly with lots and lots of natural greenery. I feel you should follow the palette of the home. In the case of this beautiful Beacon Hill home, we were all about sea foam, beige and azure. So of course, we ran with orchids, paper whites, white amaryllis, cream tea roses and lots of magnolia coupled with cream ware and mercury glass. Very festive and elegant and perfect to take you through the holiday season. – Gerald Pomeroy Interior design: Gerald Pomeroy Design Group Flower arrangements: New Leaf Flores of Jamaica Plain Photography: Eric Roth Photography

Brilliant designer-bling from SHARYN & CO ... After retiring to Miami Beach in 2001, Sharyn Fireman and her “beau,” Murton Sudalter, both well known to the fashion industry in Boston, took up beading as a hobby. It wasn’t long before these two celebrated creative minds moved their skills to the world of gemstones. Working diligently with geologists in New York and Miami, custom stones like barrel-cut topaz, reticulated quartz, chunks of citrine, and amethyst roundels, were coaxed into unique neck pieces. Discovered by a representative from LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Henessey), a private Sharyn & Co Boutique was created for luxury cruise ships with world wide exposure. Sharyn and Murton sail the seas three to four times a year throughout the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. The jewelry is ever changing for each adventure. Sharyn & Co has been presented at NYC Fashion Week for the fall and spring collections and at a Boston Fashion Week trunk show held recently at Hotel Chocolat. The company is now creating fabulous gemstone charms for fun: sapphire skulls, diamond fish, and ruby turtles in bead form now hang from sterling silver chains as monikers to modern art.
