DESIGN FOR A FAMILY OF THREE

UNDERSTANDING RESIDENCE DESIGN STNDARDS AND INTERIOR DESIGNING

THIRD SEMESTER (SECOND YEAR) PROJECT

SITE: CHEMPAZHANTHY, TVM

LOCATION: KERALA

SITE AREA: 600 SQ.M.

YEAR: 2019-2020

PROJECT DURATION: 6 MONTHS

PROJECT TYPE: RESIDENTIAL PROJECT

FAR AND COVERAGE: 1.2 AND 60%

The intention of the project was to design a residence for a family of 3 and a nanny. The client is a business consultant, whose wife is a music teacher who takes classes on weekends. The child is been taken care by a nanny who lives with them. The music room and formal living are provided within the design to satisfy the occupational requirements of the clients.

The formal living area can be extended the nearest music room and seperated by sliding doors thus acting as a multipurpose living area. The project has formal living, informal living area, music room, guest bed room, activity room, dining and a kitchen area on the ground level. The next level at +4.80 lvl is planned with the master bed room, kids bedroom, nanny’s bedroom, a reading area and home theatre.

VERTICAL ZONING DIAGRAM

Design respects the context and contours of the site. The residence has a formal and an informal entry due to the fact that both husband and wife are working and they encounter with a lot of guests frequently.

Public and semi private spaces are zoned on ground floor. Private spaces are zoned on first level. Every space of the design is overflooded with natural light and ventilation; an approach to a sustainable design.

The ground floor consists of a formal living area, Music room, Guest bed room, Gym and entertainment room, Informal Living area, Kitchen, Dining and a Work Area.

The open kitchen plan provides a sense of openness accused through a dining area of 6 seaters which opens up to an outdoor seating area.

The entertainment and gym room is provided on ground floor for its frequent use and entertainment purpose.

Alappuzha known as ‘The Venice of the East’ has lost its significance over time as Ernakulam developed as the port town. The developments and livelihood of locals are affected since then leading to lack of awareness of the cultural and heritage past of Alappuzha. The architecture thesis brings a solution to this problem that Alappuzha now face and hence the project brings benefits of tourism to the communities that live around the assets by a platform that promotes local enterprises that improves the social and economic conditions of artisans, while protecting the state’s unique heritage.

A cultural centre where artists and artisans from various backgrounds can come together to form a community of their own for promoting, celebrating and sharing their art forms and presenting them to the larger community as well. This urban oasis would attract local residents and tourists and give them an unwinding experience from the city. The Cultural Centre presents Alappuzha’s architecture and its scenic beauty to tourists, locals, artists and artisans across the World.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Flourished in the field of relegion, culture under 2nd Chera Empire

Principalities like Kayamkulam, Purakkad and Karappuaram came into power.

Portugese came prominent in politics and mad Christianity popular

Portugese power declined and Dutch power became prominent.

Marthandavarma gave special attention to development of district as adminstrative and commercial centre, Krishnapuram Palace constructed.

ALAPPUZHA LOCATION STUDY

Unique architecture along Canal: Alappuzha is rich with the beauty of artificial canals constructed in 18th century where buildings are lined along the canal which is a Dutch Town Planning technique.

Light House: Alappuzha has a unique feature which was developed as it was part of a port town. It was once an important feature of the port town but over time lost its significance.

Pathways and sidewalks along the waterbodies with steps which bring people closer to nature, sidewalks are sometimes landscaped with local trees.

Waterbody inspired from Artificial lakes and other water bodys such as kulams and ponds. Alappuzha is famous for its manmade lakes and Snake boat race.

First Post Office in Kerala constructed in 1857.

Town Development Commettee set up in 1894.

Daras Mail, First coir factory in Kerala owned by James Daras started in 1859

Development of Cochin as natural harbour diminished the importance of Aleppey town as a business hub during 1928 and present Alappuzha district comprising of six taluks formed in 1982.

Alappuzha known for its scenic beauty of lands later witnessed the bloom of tourism industry. Then tourism has become the major economy of the district.

Vernacular Architecture

Boat Jetty: These are places where people and goods get loaded and unloaded which are mostly single storeyed double heighted waiting sheds.

Craft Shops: Craft shops inspired from Angadis(Market Street). Angadis are single or double storeyed buildings arranged on either sides of a roadway.

Aryal Thara(Public Plaza): The Banyan trees are an important feature among the relegious beleifs of certain religions which is a common setting in the past where people used to spend their time socializing.

Architecture freatures of Alappuzha which shown as in the sketch with arched doors and windows and grilled lower storey, sloping roof etc are followed throughout the design.

DESIGN UNDERSTANDING

The design intends to create moments and experiences within the cultural centre, that reminds the users of Alappuzha’s culture, a place that recalls the collective memories of Alappuzha’s culture, a place that recalls the collective memories of Alapuzha’s lifestyle.

Replanting any trees to maintain site culture. Minimixed vehicular circulation.

DESIGN STRATEGIES:

Building form sits on site without blocking the views of neighbouring buildings towards the lake by maintaing low height buildings.

Interconnecting all three zones: Literature, Art and Lifestyle; R- Literature blocks; Y: Lifestyle; B: Arts

Building orientation to maximize building views to lake and site activities.

Water Body: Alappuzha’s unique feature of building along the canals is reflected through the design. Each space has a view towards waterbody. It connects the 2 zones.

The multipurpose hall which have flexible exhibition spaces where it can further be used for other purposes like meetings.

The Multipurpose hall leads to a library, a book store with a lounge space further leading to a courtyard with staircase leading to a lager library hall with games area on first floor

Craft Shops: Craft shops displaying the works of craftsmen located along the waterbody in between the literature zone and art zone. Designed with multiple entries to crate a welcoming feel to buyers and visitors.

The library on ground floor further leads to a seminar hall and toilets facing courtyard. The training area is designed according to traditional art training of Kerala called Koothamabalm.

Craft workshops designed for 24 crafts designed within 10 blocks of vairous spaces acoording to the crafts with an activity courtyard in the centre, house boat making and display area, coir workshop and toilet block

Auditorium with 250 seats has a seperate VIP Entrace and parking space and is easily accessed through the second entry. Designed with entries on both sides and one side facing the crafts area. Further it is connected to the cafes near the training area.

CRAFT WORKSHOPS

SECTION DRAWINGS

Craft workshops are designed mimicing the streets of Alappuzha( Mullackal ) where each craft block represents building blocks. Each crafts workshop have a display area in center with transparent wall where the visitors can see the artists working.

Craft area is designed as an informal learning space where facade is welcoming with traditional sloping roofs. Half walls for craft workshops which brings natural ventillation and light.

FACULTY APARTMENT

UNDERSTANDING RESIDENCE DESIGN STNDARDS AND INTERIOR DESIGNING

SIXTH SEMESTER (THIRD YEAR) PROJECT

SITE: MARIAN COLLEGE CAMPUS, TVM

LOCATION: KERALA

SITE AREA: 1.5 ACRES

YEAR: 2020-2021

PROJECT DURATION: 6 MONTHS

PROJECT TYPE: RESIDENTIAL PROJECT

FAR AND COVERAGE: 1.4 AND 40%

The site is located within Marian College Campus and the project focuses on providing staff housing for the staffs of Marian College. The site area is about 1.5 acres and has St. Joseph’s B. Ed college towards east and the Marian Art’s college towards south. There is a canal, Parvathy Puthanaar flowing near to the plot which is on South of it providing beautiful views.

This design respects the needs of its occupants and focuses for a better learning with living environment. The design is purely derived according to the interests of the usergroup, i.e., faculties. Teachers are the ones who enjoy learning from personal experiences and networking with others. The design works on the idea of creating this living with a better learning environment.

Enhancing a sense of community since the building stands within a college campus, and undisturbed and active community is tried to achieve through this design

Blocks subtracted to ensure proper ventilation and maximize view

Square divided into 2 for wind flow and to create a channel for circulation

Entrance marked by a double height lobby to seperate public and private. Minimized walls on SW to reduce heat gain

Design respects the context and contours of the site. The residence has a formal and an informal entry due to the fact that both husband and wife are working and they encounter with a lot of guests frequently.

Public and semi private spaces are zoned on ground floor. Private spaces are zoned on first level. Every space of the design is overflooded with natural light and ventilation; an approach to a sustainable design.

Enhancing a sense of community since the building stands within a college campus, and undisturbed and active community is tried to achieve through this design by:

An open courtyard with continuous activity spaces like badminton court, Children play area, Restaurant outdoor seating.

Amenities zoned to first floor level for easy access and encourage a healthy life. Bridge is used to connect amenities.

The badminton court, children play area, gym, courtyard are connected which makes each space more accessible

Learning occurs through experience and reading. The library is zoned near to entrance with different types of work spaces.

THIRD SEMESTER (SECOND YEAR) PROJECT

LOCATION: HYPOTHETICAL

AREA: 15 SQ.M. (BUILT)

YEAR: 2019-2020

PROJECT DURATION: 6 MONTHS

PROJECT TYPE: RESIDENTIAL

This design was intended to create an architectural studio for 2 practicing architects in a constraint of 15 sq.m. plot area. The studio contains discussion space, wall attached foldable drawing table, a bed space and kitchenette..

As per the design , the floor area is limited to 15 sq.m. Space is utilized to the maximum by construction of a mezzanine floor where the private spaces such as bed space, learning, reading area and toilets are provided. Ground floor is designed with an area for discussion of 3, a kitchenette, cupboards and drawing space.
