These were solved by carrying out structural investigations, flat jack tests, nondestructive testing and proposals were made locating
walls were demolished and reconstructed. The internal cracks for the remaining walls were fixed using helical stitching and plastering. The timber staircase at the end of the passage was dismantled in parts. The parts were numbered and tested for any defects. These parts were relaid in their original positions with over 70% replaced timber of the same size and type.

Meanwhile, the masonry for the superstructure was carried out. Rafters were fixed using notches near their ends. Purlins were fixed on top using lap joints and dovetail joints. A waterproofing sheet was stretched over the purlins, on top of which battens were nailed and country tiles laid in series with a constant overlap in the direction of flow of rainwater.

The major materials used are stone in the substructure, bricks in the superstructure and timber in all structural systems - columns, beams, rafters, purlins, trusses and false ceiling. The joinery types used are: tenon and mortise, lap joint, dovetail joint and nailing for smaller bands of wood. Since, original construction was done in Sagwan i.e. teakwood, the replacement wood chosen was also Sagwan. As per the evidences found, the construction of the bungalow from the colonial era took place in the following manner: Foundation was prepared. Timber posts were erected, half of the substructure was laid in bricks and lime mortar and left with toothing. Timber framework was carried out for door-window openings and wall plates. Trusses were thereafter, erected on wallplates and left to settle into the wood members.

Coordinates : 32.72° N, 74.84° E Address : Cannal Head Rd, Bhagwati Nagar, Canal Road, Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir 180002 Stakeholders : Jammu Municipal Corporation and Irrigation Department Project Role : Documentation, Analysis and Proposal Project Team : Individual (Covid times) Session : Spring Semester 2021 (Jan - April) Organisation : CEPT University
The historic urban tissue of the Jammu City hills is representative of its irrigation channels and water systems of the settlements spanning
Similarly, outside the once fortified city, the Ranbir Canal was build by the Dogra ruler Maharaja Ranbir Singh for the City of Jammu and Ranbir Singh
Dev Dynasty (800-1500) up to Dogra Dynasty (1841-1947). The channels within the city were converted into roads leaving today the Nallahs that were once located on the periphery of the fort wall. These remaining nallahs and detention tanks stand today as an example of water conservation, irrigation as well as drainage construction typology of this big range of settlements.
Pura. The canal stands today as an exemplary construction typology for irrigation of the late 19th century. Water is our common heritage and the waterscape adds environmental value to the City. The areas around the waterscape matrix of Jammu represents its historic urban environment and need to be sensitively planned.

4. Canal Gate & wall in poor condition
Problem
The historic remain of the heritage in technology in the form of Canal Gate is lying unused and forgotten in a state of disrepair. Looking at the potential of increasing tourists footfall from the upcoming projects of Riverfront and Artificial Lake on the otherside of the Gate which would further increase the pressure on the site, it is necessary to bring strategies to not only protect the gate but also create awareness.
Proposal : Conservation and re-use of the gate for creating awareness during the low levels of the canal water discharge and throughout the dry phase between Diwali and Baisakhi of the Rabi Period. Existing Condition

Dhajji-Dewari Construction
Timber-log Construction
The Kashmir region of Jammu and Kashmir falls under seismic zone 5. During the previous earthquakes, millions of houses were severely damaged resulting in great loss of life. As per the ground reports, the concrete houses were observed damaged and only the traditional architecture of Kashmir Valley withstood the seismic forces. Not only are these traditional buildings earthquake responsive but they also contribute to the image and identity of the cultural landscape of Kashmir. However, this landscape is being marred by concrete buildings. And in the run for modernization, the embedded knowledge of the traditional architecture is being forgotten. This research is an attempt to find out the embedded knowledge of the various types of traditional buildings that proved to be earthquake resistant – Taq, Dhajji-Dewari and Timber Log – by carrying out parallel case
studies on common parameters of seismic design followed by an overview on existing guidelines and suggestions on adding considerations for these traditional buildings in the codes. The analysis of the case studies with respect to seismic design parameters resulted in finding their interdependencies during the event of an earthquake. The analysis of regional and national building codes resulted in finding a very few traditional building timber elements being in use in codes leading to suggestions for their consideration. The research concludes with a message to make people-friendly earthquake building codes as many home-owners carry out repair tasks on their own which instead of entangling seismic design into non-decipherable codes, ensures that the embedded knowledge of this local seismic culture always stays in circulation across the generations to come.

General Post Office (GPO) at Relief Road is the main postal service provider for all sub-divisional postal branches in the city of Ahmedabad, and a source of revenue for the nation. It has been a witness to the transition phase between the colonial rule and the independent India. Built in 1928, the post office is a twentieth century heritage and has been listed in ASI monuments as grade II-A. In today’s times, the GPO symbolises exchange of ideas across the world and continues its contribution to nation building and historic fabric of the City. The design was carried out by George Wittet, a consulting architect to John Begg in PWD Bombay, having well known structures amongst his works like Gateway of India. Wittet along with the contractor J.A. Ellingworth designed a cross shaped plan having 3 X 3 square grid layout with 2 X 2 additional squares on east and west.
The building is representative of experiments with composite buildings inheriting the style and language predominant in the old city of Ahmedabad. Through this blend of experimental and functional value, it has imposing stone columns carrying the load of an RCC two-way slab. The composite structure is reinforced at slab, beams and chajja level helping in uniform distribution of load through the load bearing brick masonry and stone columns. The elements of the structure narrate the past. The thin chajja bands over windows tell us that the City was much cooler in those times. The stone columns design is descriptive of its setting in the old city of Ahmedabad where similar designs are found. The Grid Layout has been used during Colonial period to express colonial conquest, military organization, political and economic domination. A grid plan provides a scope of expansion and better lifestyle.
Thus, it is a memory of Colonial Architecture - amalgamating elements of design found in England and India. The kind of challenges faced in the process provides potential for new knowledge. The building is an example of early use of concrete as slabs and beams over heavy stone columns isn’t the general practice in present times. The structure is also a good case of why new construction shouldn’t be built into the historic fabric. Major defects in the passage wall were inevitable as the new rcc construction passage beams rests on its stone bands. Other than this, majority of the structure is in good condition and can be cleaned and repointed with minimal investment. Modifications to the new extension and constant monitoring of the passage wall would help the historic structure find it’s original state of equilibrium and should be carried out only with the approval of a structural engineer.

experience despite being situated in a densely populated and noisy market area. The quality of the space is glorified by the rays of light that move from flights, landing, kund and into the well shaft showing Dhrangadra stone in different shades. This subterranean structure is made stable by the use of retaining walls and the two storeyed arches acting as a tangible portal amidst the intangible elements of nature - earth, water, wind and sky. The upper and lower arches being
The evidence of its ageing can be found in weathered brackets, niches and ornamental string courses. Despite its ability to withstand the forces of nature over centuries, one can’t ignore the arch facing Kuta that has voussoirs slipping down and crushing the keystone which needs immediate attention.

Amritvarshini Vav A Poem by Neha Chandel
Moving further down the turn A barely lit tower All straight lines Levels of three Emerging out at the end The Well The rings of masonry Defying gravity
Two diagonal stones behind Meeting the kuta Up on the second level Miniature niches on both sides A flat slab sheltering above Before varsharitu comes next year again;
Walking underneath the scorching sun; Slowing fumigating travel machines; the noise of the blaring horns! The third transition happens Yet another resting place Repetition of niches in threes
Units in harmony A welcoming village What a site it’d be ! And Vav! The first impression! A line of arches And so the descent begins Eyes rushing to meet A kund and a niche Inviting you to its depth Perhaps to sit and chant To take sanctum In the sacred entity, Water.
Entering a portal to the other side; the scale of the darwaja overwhelms And yet, like two great hands curved in unison The city invites Easterners
Perhaps to highlight Two arches, one on top Each an identity of its own The descent continues
Brackets in radial trance Carrying the burden Bands sending metaphysical messages In Sun and in strings of flower Beauty magnified Shringar Rasa!
Alas, all that there is Vehicles shrouding Ward office entrance Once proud of its truth Now soaked in interventions A neem tree consoling Uninviting dark spaces Series of arches and yet, Prison bars!
To the emptiness, adding its own amrita Quiet and calm sounds 11 squirrels rushing up and down Birds chirping and hooting The rustling of the Pipal leaves After this tiresome journey, Perhaps, it’s time to lie down And listen with awe and wonder The sounds of nature In AmritVarshini Vav!
The height enclosing The tremendous depth Two storeyed arches in twos Merging in the corner
Through this entered Great elephants trumpeting Announcing the return
In stark contrast, Out in the open Standing tall Bright blue & yellow Spotting the shopfronts Tarpaulin Rolls
The first transition happens A Persian and Sanskrit script May the glory of the past Live as long as the Sun and the Moon

Ahh, the well! No Water.
A king on a horseback Battalion of soldiers behind And now, enter, I.
A curvy trail, a gap spotted Squeezing oneself through A collapsible gate Like a window of opportunity
The second transition happens A well lit landing A pause to catch breath Niches in threes on both sides The wind guiding the descent
Inside an empty vessel But immensely heavy The noise of the outer world Slowly gone Eyes finally one with the kund The place of equilibrium Here everything settles Peace.
