EMW SPORTS AND CLUBS

Welcome to the World of 4-H! throughout the year to boys and girls who are ages 5-18 (age as of January 1 of the current year). 4-H is open to everyone regardless of gender, race, color, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or marital status. "4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills."

The 4-H Youth Development Program is a youth component of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County, whose offices are located at 21 South Grove Street, East Aurora. Though located in East Aurora, programming opportunities are extended to all the citizens of Erie County. The 4-H program provides research-based, informal educational opportunities

4-H members (whether part of a club or working on projects independently) can pursue their chosen interests in the following areas: Citizenship and Civic Education: 4-H members gain an understanding of democratic principles and explore the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of U. S. citizenship. Emphasis is placed on the relationship of citizens to one another through community service, service learning, cultural education, and intergenerational programs. Communications and Expressive Arts: Projects and activities in this area help 4-H members learn to express themselves clearly, confidently and creatively through public presentations, writing, photography, art, crafts, music, and drama. Consumer and Family Sciences: Home-centered projects and activities help 4-H members build the capacity to meet their changing needs as they grow individually and progress through the stages of family life. Youth learn about human development, interpersonal relations and the management of resources through projects in child care and babysitting, clothing and textiles, consumer education, home environment, parenting and family life. Environmental Education and Earth Sciences: Projects and activities are designed to create environmental awareness and build a commitment to environmental stewardship. 4-H members learn about nature and ecology, wildlife and geology, water, weather and soils, composting and recycling, energy production and the responsible use of natural resources for recreational and economic purposes. Many kinds of outdoor recreational activities are used as educational vehicles in this program area.

Healthy Lifestyles Education: Through this program area young people are enabled to accept responsibility for maintaining and improving their physical, intellectual, emotional and social health and to acquire patterns of living that foster concern for health, nutrition, fitness, safety and quality of life for themselves and others. Personal Development and Leadership: Youth explore and learn about themselves, set personal goals, develop life skills and competencies, interact with peers, develop personal values and ethical character traits. Development of these skills and characteristics is often the focus of special youth conferences, workshops, camping experiences and other group events and activities. Plants and Animals: Youth are introduced to biological principles, breeding, growth, processing, marketing and consumer utilization of food, fiber, and non-food products and services through projects and activities related to gardening, pets, livestock, horses, poultry, and aquaculture. Science and Technology: Through this program youth experience fundamental scientific processes, learn basic principles and develop skills needed to solve technical problems. Project areas include biological sciences, physical sciences, technology and engineering (aerospace, automotive, bicycle, computers, electricity and electronics, engine, wood science and industrial arts).

Elma, Marilla, Wales, and the surrounding areas have approximately 30 4-H clubs and after-school programs as well as many individual members who are “Learning by Doing. Most clubs accept new members at the beginning of the club year (October 1-September 30); but some clubs due to location, program interest, or ages of members are not able to accept new members. To enroll in a club or as an independent/individual member, or find out more including how to start your own club, call Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County at 652-5400 ext. 131 or 130. New members need to be enrolled by May 1 of the current club year and need to meet required program criteria in order to be eligible to participate in the Erie County Fair. Returning or continuing members need to be enrolled by December 1 and need to have met required program criteria in order to be elibilbe to participate in the Erie County Fair.

EMW SPORTS AND CLUBS

EMW Football & Cheerleading The story of EMW Football and Cheerleading began 50 years ago in the town of East Aurora. The year was 1966 and five men from the towns of Elma, Marilla, and Wales helped the new organization break away from the more established East Aurora Little Loop Football program. EMW Football and Cheerleading started with only two football teams and our organization now boasts four football and four cheerleading teams. EMW Football and Cheerleading has been a member of a few leagues, the old Southtown Football league, OATKA Football league, and now we have returned home to the Empire West Youth Football and Cheerleading league consisting of Lancaster, East Aurora, Orchard Park, Holland, Eden, Alden, Cheektowaga Airlanes, and Hamburg.

three cheerleading competitions, but what they are really doing is preparing themselves for life, making lifelong friendships, and creating memories that will treasure for the rest of their lives.

EMW Football and Cheerleading’s guiding principle is that every child deserves and has the absolute right to fulfill and live out their dreams on the football field and on the cheerleading mat. At EMW all of our board members, coaches, and volunteers go through extensive training and must pass a background check. While we sincerely want all our young athletes to find success in their sport, it is much more important to us that they find success in life and all of our coaches strive to teach our young athletes the life lessons of discipline, self- determination, and team work. Our football players play league games and take part in football tournaments. Our cheerleaders cheer the football teams on and compete in at least

At the end of the day, EMW Football and Cheerleading along with our great partners at the Iroquois Central School District, and the towns of Elma, Marilla, and Wales have the goal of creating a love of sport in all of our young athletes and preparing them for all the challenges that life will throw at them. We are extremely confident that we will be successful in our goal because of our amazing coaches/volunteers, excellent partners, but most of all because of the outstanding athletes.

Elma Historical Society

The Elma Historical Society’s mission is to preserve the past for the future. In this endeavor we have increased the Elma Town Museum from one building to three buildings featuring displays of artifacts that span almost two centuries of Elma’s history. The Town of Elma Museum Complex is made up of the recently renovated 1846 Hurd House showcasing a reference library and a “trip” back in time; a barn museum that volunteers built in 2005, housing Elma’s vintage dairy and farming equipment; and a recently reconstructed 1846 saw mill with a working waterwheel. The mill was built by local volunteers at no cost to Town residents. The Museum Complex is located at 3011 Bowen Rd. in Elma and is open most Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. and the first and third Sundays from May through September from 1-4 p.m. and the museum is also open when there are activities at the Village Green Park. Special tours can be arranged by calling either the Museum at 655-0046 or President Marlene Baumgartner at 652-9458. Visit our web-site at www.elmanyhistory.com for on going events. The Society is again offering a $500 scholarship to a winning Iroquois High School senior who presents an essay on local history. Visit the website for meetings of the Society and events.

In being responsive and fiscally responsible to the needs of the community, many of the programs will continue while others will need to be modified or possibly discontinued. The Boys & Girls Club of Elma, Marilla and Wales (EMW) will be assuming the responsibilities of the Day Camp activities while Community Education will take over the programs more instructional in nature, such as Learn-to-swim and tennis during the summer months and Ski Club during the winter months. Both Iroquois Community Education and the Boys & Girls Club of EMW are working together to continue to offer these programs as seamlessly as possible to our community. A list of these and all other Community Education programs can be found on the Iroquois Central School district website at www.iroquoiscsd.org under the “Community” link on the menu bar. Registration for summer Community Education programs will be conveniently available through a secure online registration process once the summer schedule has been finalized.
