Heritage Days & Reunion Weekend

East Aurora, New York

July 28-31

East Aurora's Horse Era is Remembered This Weekend The Village of East Aurora is over 140 years old, yet one doesn’t have to look too far to see reminders of how the community has evolved. It’s safe to say that nobody here today recalls the village of 1874, the date of its official incorporation, but there are still residents whose families go back generations and have recollections of conversations about earlier times here. The point in time that one arrives in the community becomes their “historic” reference of the way things were. For some it might be a memory of going to the “Greeks” for a treat. Or perhaps it was the year that the railroad tracks were raised over Main Street. Or the big fire at the Circle Inn. Maybe it was a year that the EAHS football team was champion. Or that time when classmates went off to war and did not return. A community’s history is as personal as it is municipal. It’s just that recorded history tends to look at a bigger picture. Recorded history for the Village of East Aurora really begins 70 years before its incorporation, when the “Middle Road” was cut through the old growth forest. The Holland Land Company’s development of the region brought the first settlers to what is now the village in 1804. Many New England families were among those who arrived here first, and there are those who feel that the practical, independent thinking they brought has remained part of village life ever since. Originally two villages developed. The “east village” in the Town of Willink (now Aurora) and the Village of Willink, which is still known as the “West End” of East Aurora by many. It was in early 1874 that Willink was extended over the east end, and later that year residents, voted by a slim margin to rename the village East Aurora.

After the initial development period, East Aurora had a number of major influences in its history. The first was the horse era, when the village became known as the “trotting capital of the world.” It began in 1855 and lasted past the turn of the century. Hamlin’s Village Farm, with hundreds of horses, and Jewett’s Farm, with the world’s only one-mile covered race track, brought visitors to the village from far and wide. It is that time in history that is remembered this weekend.

Judged the “most handsome horse in the world,” Mambrino King was the pride of the Hamlin Farm.

The mile-long covered race track was a major attraction back then. 9

Heritage Days & Reunion Weekend

East Aurora, New York

July 28-31

Of Course You Can Go Home Again; We’ve Been Expecting You by Rick Ohler We’ve come to call it Reunion Weekend over the last 35 years. But that’s not an adequate description of it. Oh, the word “reunion” certainly fits; ever since Ed Vidler and his Class of 1946 invited all EAHS alumni and faculty for a “touch of class” party at Firemen’s Field in 1981 to kick off the Racing Days activities, former East Aurorans have flocked to town from the four corners of the world. No, the word we quarrel with is “weekend.” Because Reunion Weekend really starts on that Wednesday before the Friday night party that the Rotary hosts year for a thousand or more, and goes at least until Monday morning when out-of-towners get that last cup of coffee on their way to the airport or to the Thruway to head back to their adopted homes. Reunion Weekend is more like Reunion Five-day Wraparound Weekend. Oh, what the heck; let’s just admit that it’s Reunion Week. Those of us who live here can usually tell when reunion time is upon us without looking at a calendar. It will be a mid-weekday in July and suddenly cars with license plates from Pennsylvania or Ohio or even farther afield will appear in town. Parents, or perhaps grandparents, will pull over to a curb on Sycamore or Oakwood or Girard and point to a house. “Here’s where I grew up,” you can imagine them saying as they gesticulate enthusiastically to kids in the back seat. Up on Main Street, we’ll see visitors doing that 360-degree lookaround, marveling at how much things have changed since they were kids, and, yet, how the feel of the village has remained remarkably the same: intimate, welcoming, walkable. Even Sandy, the Vidler’s mechanical horse, now sixty-some years old, is still available for a ten-cent ride. “I used to ride Sandy when I was your age,” we hear you saying to your kids or grandkids. The patios of every restaurant, diner and coffee shop on Main from the Globe westward to the Bar Bill, as well as those on the side streets, will be full and if you walk by, you will probably be hailed by an old friend back in town for the festivities. We townies rediscover every Reunion Week that getting any real work done from Wednesday to Monday is nearly impossible. We might as well tell the boss we’ll need a couple of “personal” days and give in to the fun.

For returning ex-patriates, Reunion Week is about reminiscing, reconnecting, and looking back. For us who have stayed all along, Reunion Week is about seeing how the town looks to others and, without making too much of a fuss about, patting ourselves on the back for keeping it as the kind of place folks will always come back to, and call home for years to come.

Heritage Days & Reunion Weekend

East Aurora, New York

July 28-31

Heritage & Reunion Weekend Began as Village Racing Days It all began during the Gilded Age of 1870-1900, when horsedrawn carriages transitioned from transportation to an elegant sport, and East Aurora became known as the world’s trotting nursery, for the large Standardbred breeding and training farms of three local businessmen: Cicero Hamlin was considered one of the most influential Standardbred breeders of the 19th century. His 400 acre Village Farm produced “Mambrino King”. Judged to be the “The Handsomest Horse in the World”, this horse is credited with attracting over 30,000 visitors to East Aurora in his lifetime. Fellow breeder, Seymour H. Knox established his Ideal Stock Farm and filled it with high-end trotters for breeding purposes. The Knox family sold their 633 acre farm to the State of New York in 2000, who renamed it Knox Farm State Park. Henry Jewett is legendary for his construction of a one mile, completely enclosed track at Jewett Stock farm. It was the only one of its kind in the world, and was engineered and built to provide a place for horsemen in the north to train year-round. In those early days, it was not uncommon for local sulky drivers to challenge each other to a spirited run up East Aurora’s Main Street. While village officials did not always look kindly at these impromptu races, the street was often lined with cheering spectators, many of whom waged bets on the action. The death of Cicero

13

Hamlin in 1905, coincided with the end of the Gilded Age, and the decline of the world famous horse farms in East Aurora. Decades later, when the Village of East Aurora celebrated its centennial of incorporation, the organizing committee thought it would be appropriate to re-enact sulky races on Main Street. Those initial races in 1974 were so popular that an annual community celebration was built around the trotting history of East Aurora and its other horse-related activities like the East Aurora Hunt and the Aurora Polo Club. Led by Preston Smith, Sr. and a handful of local carriage driving enthusiasts, the annual celebration called “Village Racing Days” was born. Preston Smith’s small band of local carriage drivers became the founding members of the East Aurora Driving Society, which quickly grew from those 4 local families to 150 regional members by the mid-1980s. For over 40 years, driving society volunteers have welcomed competitors from New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Canada to compete in pleasure driving competition that tests the skill of the driver and the athleticism of the horse or pony. Today, Western New York is home to nearly 40,000 equines, and represents the largest concentration of pleasure driving enthusiasts in the US. At the East Aurora Carriage Drive & Competition spectators and their families can experience the art and sport of carriage driving as it might have been seen in the late 19th Century.

Heritage Days & Reunion Weekend

East Aurora, New York

July 28-31

We'll Ne'er Forget Our High School Days... Heritage and Reunion Weekend brings hundreds of East Aurora High School graduates back to the community for the now-legendary Rotary Reunion Attitude Adjustment Party on Friday evening, where EAHS grads from all classes gather. Individual class reunions are scheduled this weekend as well.

High School Classes to Return for Reunions The last full weekend in July has become the unofficial East Aurora High School class reunion weekend for many classes. With the Rotary Reunion Party on Friday night alumni from all classes gather to find friends from their high school days. The “all classes (and friends)” reunion at Firemen’s Field offers the opportunity to get together with high school friends who may have graduated a few years earlier or later. And, it’s a chance to meet other than at “official” reunions that are typically held only periodically.

Class of 1953 & 1954

The classes of 1953 and 1954 will have a reunion picnic gathering at 1 p.m. on July 29 at the East Aurora American Legion picnic shelter on Center Street. Hot dogs will be supplied, but people are asked to bring a dish to pass and and their own beverages. For questions, contact Jack or Linda Foster at 652-5001 for more information.

Class of 1966

The class of 1966 with hold its 50th Reunion on July 30 at the Old Orchard Inn, 2095 Blakeley Corners Rd. from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $66 per person. People can register with the class and purchase tickets at: www.66EAHS50.reunionmanager.com.
