Anyone who hasn’t made a recent stop on Main Street in Mt. Morris, one of the gateways to Letchworth State Park, will have a surprise. Greg O’Connell Day, a 1964 SUNY Geneseo grad has purchased more than a dozen and a half Main St. buildings and is renovating them. O’Connell Day, who didn’t become a developer until after retiring from the New York City Police Dept., renovated old warehouses along the waterfront in Red Hook, N.J. He then turned his attention to Mt. Morris, N.Y.

Fuel for grill fires is not provided. Some picnic shelters are available for reservations. Remember: carry in - carry out. Winter Sports: Winter sports in Letchworth Park include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling in designated areas, and hiking. History: The William Pryor Letchworth Museum in the Middle Falls Area features displays about early regional settlement and Native American Artifacts. On a ridge behind the Glen Iris Inn is a restored Seneca Indian Council House, the grave of Mary Jemison, and the cabin of Nancy Jemison, all of which were preserved by Mr. Letchworth.

The Falls Within the park, the Genesee River cascades over three falls, including the 107-foot drop of the Middle Falls. Lights illuminate the Middle Falls after dark from May through October.

About Letchworth State Park
Letchworth State Park is a “Carry In - Carry Out” State Park. This means that everything daily visitors bring into the park (carry in) must be taken home (carry out). This includes picnicking trash and garbage. The park has no garbage receptacles in the picnic grounds and other day use areas.
Reservations Campsites & Cabins
Attractions
Reservations for cabins and campsites in State Parks, as well as campgrounds run by the Environmental Conservation Department, are available through the NYS Cabin/Camping Reservation System. Call 1-800-456-CAMP (1-800-456-2267).
Hiking: Hiking opportunities abound on trails ranging from one-half to twenty miles, with difficulty from easy to moderate. About half the trails are available for winter hiking or skiing. Swimming: Swimming is available at a pool which is located in the north end of the park in the Highbanks Recreation Area. The pool is open during the summer season when lifeguards are on duty, late June until Labor Day. (Fee) Whitewater: The Genesee River is a Class II-III whitewater river. Registration is available for canoeists and kayakers. Participants must be experienced whitewater paddlers and able swimmers. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Whitewater rafting and guided canoe trips are a concession activity that advertises in this guide. Trips originate from the Lee’s Landing area and travel about six miles over two hours. The Glen Iris Inn and Restaurant, located within the park near the Middle Falls, offers fine dining, country inn guest rooms and a gift shop. Open through Oct. 30th. Room reservations suggested. Park Regulations
For the enjoyment and safety of all visitors, a number of regulations apply. Park rules and regulations are posted at all comfort stations and are available at the Visitor Center. A few frequently-asked-about regulations are listed here. Pets: Household pets are permitted if confined on a leash not exceeding six feet in length. Proof of rabies inoculation is required. Pets are prohibited in all park buildings, cabins, cabin areas, and pool areas. Alcoholic Beverages: Permits are required for most groups bringing alcoholic beverages into the park. Permits and specific regulations are available from the Visitor Center. Fires: Fires are permitted only in fireplaces; visitors must bring their own fuel or purchase it at the concession stand. River/Gorge: Entry into the Genesee River within the park is prohibited, except by permit in a canoe group. Swimming is allowed only in the swimming pool. Climbing the river gorge is prohibited.

Letchworth Portageville Entrance Closed Until 2018 by Carly Vair With construction underway on the Norfolk Southern High Bridge, the Portageville entrance of Letchworth State Park is now closed, and it is expected to remain closed until September 2018. The park’s other entrances remain open, and the Glen Iris Inn, Upper and Middle Falls will all remain accessible during construction. Park Manager Roland Beck said he doesn’t anticipate any adverse effect on tourism. “The Portageville gate is one of our lesser-used gates to begin with,” Beck said. “To accommodate this, we redid our Castile gate so that’s bigger; it’s now two lanes … so that should accommodate any extra traffic we may get. “There are just some trails that they won’t be able to access. It’ll have minimal effect.” The current bridge was built in 1875 and, in 2011, was identified by the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council as one of its five-year projects to address barriers to economic growth. The new arch will cost $70 million to construct, and, given the frequency of trespassers on the old bridge, the railroad is taking precautions to prevent trespassers in the new designs. With that in mind, Beck stressed that visitors to the park need to follow detours and stay off trails that are closed. “I just want to remind everybody, for their own safety, if they come out to the park and they want to view any of this construction, please obey the closures,” Beck said. “They will still be able to view the Upper Falls and the bridge from the Upper Middle Falls area. We don’t want anybody getting hurt. It’s still going to be an active construction zone and it’s still an active railroad as well.”
GENESEE VALLEY HUNT RACES: Historic Event is Family Fun on October 10th The Genesee Valley Hunt Races is an historic event but the fun is 21st century! Just some of the adventures that await you: exciting horse racing over fences; dog activities of all sorts – sled dog demos, jumping contests, wiener dog races, and more; children’s fun at the petting pen, pony rides, and agricultural demo center; New York food and wine tent; and unusual shopping opportunities. Prancing and athletic Thoroughbred horses have been coming to the Genesee Valley since 1892 to thunder over 3 miles and 18 sturdy timber fences leading to head-to-head battles at the finish line. This year, they are vying for $50,000 in prize money. The grass racecourse, just 1 mile north of the Village of Geneseo on Rt. 39, is laid out so the action is easy to see. Kids create their own racing excitement in the popular and charming stick horse races, held on the racetrack, by age group. Every “jockey” gets a bit of exercise and a ribbon. Stick horses provided. The parade of Genesee Valley Hunt foxhounds features a group of 20 or more hounds trotting next to the mounted hunt master without benefit of leashes. A special stop allows children to pet the well-mannered hounds and the master’s horse. Visitors are welcome to bring their dogs on leashes for a day in the country, and to cheer on Jack Russell terriers zipping down a mini-racecourse to be first in the hole at the finish line. Or to root for wiener dogs whose racing style involves a lot of milling around and tail wagging! All kinds of dog sport demonstrations will keep you and your canine companion on your toes. Be sure to stroll through the elegant tailgate parties created by those who opt for special parking next to the racecourse. Tailgaters bring their best crystal and silver, fine wines, and gourmet dishes to impress the judges who award ribbons in theme categories. The 30th Annual AppleUmpkin Festival will be held on September 24th and 25th from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Since its humble beginnings in 1986, AppleUmpkin has grown from a small neighborhood gathering to one of the premier Arts & Crafts Festivals in Western New York. The William Pryor Letchworth Museum houses a collection relating to the Indian and pioneer history of the Genesee Valley as well as archeological and natural history displays. It is located in the Middle Falls Area of the park near the Glen Iris Inn. The museum itself was built in 1912 and was planned by William Pryor Letchworth to expand his original Genesee Valley Museum which was built in 1898. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, from May 1 through October. The suggested donation is $1.00/ adult and $.50/child, $3 per family. The museum phone is (585) 493-2760.
