East Aurora, the Hometown You Always Imagined®

Welcome to East Aurora—We’ve Been Expecting You We locals will tell you that the best way to get to know East Aurora is to park your car somewhere in the middle of town near Main Street and start walking. Either direction, it won’t matter. Walk, or cycle if you prefer, for a block or two, or three and see how it feels. You’ll first get a sense of history, of respect for architecture and the legacy entrusted to us by our ancestors.

You’ll sense the vitality of the business community in the way the small shops and their owners present themselves to the public. You’ll understand, without speaking to a soul, that here is an authentic village, committed to selfdetermination refusing to be tempted by the false promises of sprawl. You’ll also find out quickly that most people will be happy to speak to you—to give

directions or to simply say hello. But rest assured that no matter where you are in the village, you are never more than a couple of blocks from a great restaurant, so you won’t go hungry. And you’ll never be more than a few minutes from one of a dozen peaceful public parks. Our foodscape is bountiful, our green space is plentiful, our welcome is genuine.

Exploring East Aurora: Let’s Get Started History East Aurora loves its history and loves to show it off. Start at the Roycroft Campus Visitor Center in the middle of the village at 31 South Grove St. near Main St., where 120 years ago something magical happened when Elbert Hubbard arrived and founded the first Arts & Crafts community in the country. That magic continues today. Take one of the tours; it will fascinate you. Visit our museums: The Millard Fillmore House, where you learn about the 13th president’s early days here; The Elbert Hubbard Roycroft Museum on Oakwood Avenue; and the Aurora History Museum (presented in conjunction with the Aurora Historical Society) at our Town Hall on Gleed Avenue. The history is rich; the respect we have for it, well-deserved. And here’s an insider’s tip: visit the Facebook page “You know you’re from East Aurora, NY, if you remember…” More photos, information and conversation than you can imagine.

Dining It was originally a typo, Eats Aurora was, but it pretty much sums things up. From a ten-cent bag of popcorn at Vidler’s 5 & 10 to a steak just voted the best in Western New York, you’ll find whatever your palette and wallet desire at more than threedozen eateries. Old favorites, cutting edge nouveau cuisine, fast food, wood-fired pizza, and the best wings and beef on weck in the solar system await you.

Shopping Self-contained, but self-determined, we like to say. You can get most of what you want right in town, but there is so much more in a constantly growing Entertainment array of small specialty shops, We’ve got more entertainment per square inch than a couple of days’ worth, at least. any other community its size. Check out state-of-the-art The Great Outdoors music venues for kids and big people, open mic nights, art openings and exhibitions, authors’ book signings, a If you started very early in the chamber music festival, a town-wide Music Fest, trivia morning, let’s say with a sunrise contests, hockey games, a lively senior center, tailgating at Knox Farm State Park, and parties behind Main St., youth sports, bike and foot races, went at a steady pace all day, an intimate playhouse and the best movie theatre in the you’d be lucky to get to all 12 Western World.

East Aurora Music Fest is the brainchild of music aficionados John Venezia, Dina Calucci and Karsten Zeiger. After visiting music fests in other communities a few years ago, the three East Aurorans realized that our village was perfect with many music venues in the village center and in walking distance from one another. With a strong committee and scores of

dedicated volunteers on the scene and behind the scenes, the event took off and has gotten better each time. In the past three years, Music Fest has attracted more than 8,000 music lovers and raised $89,000 for local organizations. This year’s recipients are Aurora Adult Daycare Services, Aurora Ice Association, the Matthew Foster Foundation, and People & Places, Inc.

Loving the Nightlife & the Live Music Scene Blues, rock and roll, country, folk, rhythm and blues, classical, jazz, top 40 — no matter what type of music you enjoy, it’s all here and it’s all live. EA Vietnam Veterans Cruise Nights Run May-September The East Aurora Vietnam Veterans will host their popular Cruise Nights every third Monday of the month at 5 p.m. from May to September at the American Legion Post #362 on Center Street. The official address of the post is 1 Legion Drive, East Aurora, if you’re using Mapquest or GPS, but it’s easy to find—just follow all the cars to Legion Park on the banks of Cazenovia Creek’s East Branch. The Cruise Nights, now in their 11th year, regularly draw 180 cars, trucks, motorcycles, hot rods, antiques, classics, modifieds and unique or specialized contemporary models. It’s not unusual to have 500 car enthusiasts and casual onlookers in attendance. As Jim Suttell, organizer of the original Nam Vets Cruise Nights and himself a Mustang guy, said, “Anybody is welcome to our Cruise Nights. We don’t have judges checking to see

if all your restorations are authentic, we don’t have certain classes, we aren’t that fussy; we just want people with interesting vehicles to turn out, socialize and have a good time. It’s a greet way to meet other car people with similar interests.” Suttell says that often car clubs, like the Mustang club of which he’s a member will come as a group. “It’s pretty impressive when 25 or 30 Mustangs of all vintages show up together,” says Suttell. Admission is free and kids of all ages are welcome. At each of the five Cruise Nights, the Tripi Family Trophy is awarded for Best in Show, regardless of category. The Vets and Legion members will sell hot dogs and pop, and Navy vet Don Galloway serves as DJ, spinning discs from the 50s and 60s and offering up trivia questions. Sign up for door prizes from local merchants

like West-Herr, Tops, Cappellino Auto Dealers and Post Commander Tom Ricci, also a Vietnam veteran. All proceeds benefit the Legion’s scholarship fund. Suttell says that having the Nam Vets run the Cruise Nights is a logical expansion of the kinship still felt by the vets, 40 and 50 years after their service in Southeast Asia. That same feeling of ca-

maraderie still pervades the event. “The Cruise Nights are good way to get the public here to appreciate our military park and enjoy the scenery by the creek.” The park, open the public, is now home to a Korean War-era F-84, a Vietnam-era helicopter, an armored personnel carrier, a Cold War-vintage Nike missile, an M60 tank, and plaques and monuments.

East Aurora’s Horse Era East Aurora was known as the trotting capital of the world East Aurora’s third major farm was the Ideal Stock Farm, in the 1880s, a heritage which is still evident today in the founded by Seymour H. Knox. numbers of pleasure riders and stables in the community. That era is remembered each summer with “Heritage and Reunion Day,” a community event which features a competitive “carriage drive and marathon” sponsored by the East Aurora Driving Society. Additionally, Heritage and Reunion Day, held the last weekend in July, serves as the focal point for numerous East Aurora High School class reunions. Other special events include retail promotions. For a complete list of events see the East Aurora Advertiser. East Aurora was the home of the Hamlin Village Farm, which produced many championship trotters. The farm was founded in 1855, with its main barn located on what is now Hamlin Avenue. In 1882 the farm purchased Mambrino King for $17,000. In 1884 the farm superintendent said that not less than 16,000 people had called to see what had been judged "the most handsome horse in the world." The Jewett Farm was known more for its track than its Photo by Marty Wangelin horses. Said to be the world’s only one, the farm was known internationally for its one-mile covered race track. It was built in 1893 and dismantled in the early '20s. SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES There are 40,000 people throughout the Village of East Aurora and six local townships. People enjoy living here because of the opportunities that this unique community has to offer in an area small enough that everybody knows you, yet sophisticated enough to serve your every need. TOWN OF AURORA

TOWN OF COLDEN

www.townofaurora.com

www.townofcolden.com

The Town of Aurora was founded in 1818, fourteen years after the first settler Jabez Warren obtained a contract from the Holland Land Company for 1,443 acres and made it his family’s home in 1804. Previously Native Americans lived in the area. The town is 36 square miles with a current population of approximately 14,000, which includes the Village of East Aurora, the hamlets of Jewettville, Griffins Mills, West Falls and a portion of South Wales. One of the town’s earliest and most prominent settlers was a young Millard Fillmore, who came to Aurora in the early 1820’s to open the first law practice in town and build a home for his future wife Abigail. Twenty-seven years later, Millard Fillmore became President of the United States. The President’s home was moved twice: from its original location on Main Street to Millard Fillmore Place, and then in 1930 to its current location on Shearer Avenue. Today it is a National Historic Landmark and the only standing home built by a United States president. With the Hamlin and Jewett Farms, the latter of which included the world’s only mile-long indoor racetrack off Grover Road, Aurora became known as the horse-racing capital of the world in the late 1800’s.

Colden was founded by Richard Buffum. He left Rhode Island with his children and some others to move west in order to find a new home. They carried everything in an ox cart, and some of the possessions they took with them are still in existence today. They settled in what is present day Colden. Buffum purchased 2,000 acres of land from the Holland Purchase Company. On April 2, 1828, the town was organized. It contained 22,704 acres and Silas Lewis was the first supervisor. The first post office was established in 1830 in Leander J. Robert’s house and was called Colden after Cadwalder D. Colden, who was a State Senator. Three years later, it was moved to Buffum’s Mills, and Buffum became postmaster. The post office kept the name Colden, and gradually, the settlement accepted the name. Buffum and James Bloomfield, a hired hand, built a grist mill, and the settlement there was then known as Buffum’s Mills. The mill was rebuilt twice and moved once. The first school was taught by Mary Eddy. Buffum and others then built houses farther away and built a road leading to them.

VILLAGE OF EAST AURORA

www.east-aurora.ny.us The Village of East Aurora, founded 1804 and incorporated 1874, has a rich history that remains an integral part of its presentday character. Located just 25 miles from downtown Buffalo and 45 minutes from Niagara Falls, East Aurora has been home to interesting individuals, including U.S. President Millard Fillmore and Elbert Hubbard, the Roycroft Arts & Crafts movement and international companies, such as Fisher-Price Toys. A walk down East Aurora’s bustling Main Street is, in some ways, a step back in time with a variety of specialty shops, restaurants, churches, municipal buildings and carefully preserved homes. Local museums and national historic sites provide direct links to East Aurora’s dynamic past. Fillmore, the nation’s 13th president, built the Millard Fillmore House on Shearer Avenue when he was a country lawyer in East Aurora. The Elbert Hubbard Museum on Oakwood Avenue features an extensive collection of Roycroft books and Arts & Crafts pieces. The birthplace of Fisher-Price Toys, East Aurora is a community that is passionate about children. Fisher-Price’s international headquarters are located on Girard Avenue in the Village. A local non-profit organization operates Explore & More...a children’s museum.

TOWN OF ELMA www.elmanewyork.com

The Town of Elma, incorporated in April 1857, was split from the Towns of Aurora and Lancaster. Encompassing 36 square miles with two major waterways, the Buffalo Creek and Cazenovia Creek, Elma sits squarely in the center of Erie County and can safely call itself the Heart of Erie County. Over 11,317 residents call Elma home, as does Iroquois Central School, one of Western New York’s top rated school systems, and Elma Meadows Golf Course, one of Erie County’s top public courses. Residents enjoy spending time with their family and friends at two of Elma’s parks, the Elma Village Green and Creek Road Park. There are also athletic fields, a Senior Center, Town Museum, and Public Library. Elma has a vibrant business community anchored by large firms like Moog, Steuben Foods, and Servotronics. Its heart is a retail plaza in the center of Town, several restaurants scattered throughout the Town, and many small businesses that provide residents with a multitude of services. While farming has been the backbone of agriculture, horse farms are becoming more prevalent. Nurseries and greenhouse operations also provide great greenery and color, they also provide the stock for several larger nurseries in the area.

TOWN OF MARILLA

TOWN OF WALES

www.erie.gov/marilla

www.townofwales.com

The Town of Marilla is situated on the eastern edge of Erie County, New York, bordered by the Towns of Alden, Wales, Elma, Lancaster and Bennington (in Wyoming County). The town was named after Mrs. Marilla Rogers, an early resident who was a highlyregarded local schoolteacher. Prior to 1826, Marilla was part of the Buffalo Creek Indian Reservation. It became an official township in 1854. Its good soils, rolling terrain and open space make Marilla an ideal place to live and work. Although largely agricultural and rural in the past, Marilla has slowly become more urbanized as a result of shifting demographics. Agriculture and farming, however, are still very vibrant within the town. The population of Marilla is now about 5,700. Marilla boasts of four churches, one restaurant, two taverns, one country store, a town park, a primary school, a historical museum, a pavilion in the center of town and a library. During the summer, the town has a large Fireman’s Carnival, which is an important social and fund-raising event in Marilla. The carnival provides entertainment for young and old, especially those who come from the surrounding area to take part and enjoy the festivities. The renowned Fireman’s Parade is especially noteworthy. They also have Memorial Day and Veterans Day Parades that are well attended. Also, don’t miss the huge annual Marilla car show held the 4th weekend in July.

The first settlers to stay came into Wales in 1804. They were descendants of Ethan Allen, a Revolutionary War hero. The next year, Jacob Turner, from Sheldon, settled nearby. Each year after this, a few more pioneers braved the wilderness and made homes for their families in the town. Wales is one of the earliest of the towns of Erie County. It was formed from Willink by State Law on April 15, 1818, while Erie County was still a part of Niagara County. As time went on, this huge town was divided into several smaller townships until Willink was left with only approximately 100 square miles. This now comprises the towns of Wales, Aurora, and Holland. In 1818, one of the towns so separated was the Town of Wales. The area, so named because its hills and green fields seemed to resemble the Wales of Britain, was an agricultural and dairying area.

TOWN OF HOLLAND

www.erie.gov/holland Established in 1818, the Town of Holland (pop. 3,612) is a rural and residential community in the center of the eastern edge of Erie County, NY. Holland prides itself on its charming, small-town atmosphere, its fine school system, and its rural friendliness. The town also offers several shops, offices, eateries, and a NASCAR racetrack. It is also home to the annual “Tulip Festival” held each May since 1956.

See Some Country on these 6 and 7.5 Mile Bicycle Rides Here are two bicycle routes that will take you on a mostly-country ride. The first is six miles. The alternate is 7.5 and has steeper uphill portions. Begin in the public parking lot behind Vidler’s store (rear of Main St.), go east out of the lot and turn left onto Pine St. Bear right at sharp turn (.3 miles). Pine St. becomes Porterville Road. Continue generally east by following Porterville Road; you’ll cross above the Route 400 at the 1.3 mile mark. Continue to follow Porterville. You will pass Reiter Road at the 1.9 mile mark. This is where the alternate route begins. Unless taking the alternate, continue to follow Porterville Road. Eventually the road will curve to the left and begin a downhill grade. At the bottom of the hill at the 2.8 mile mark is a stop sign. (A few feet to the right is the bridge over Buffalo Creek.). Turn left at the stop sign (West Blood Road). Continue on West Blood until you reach Girdle Road at the 4.2 mile mark. Turn left onto Girdle and continue until you return to Porterville Road at the 5.3 mile mark. Turn right onto Porterville. At the 5.6 mile mark (where Porterville turns into Pine St.) is Pine St. Extension. If you take a brief “detour” you’ll head to the Sinking Ponds wildlife sanctuary. Otherwise, continue up Pine St. to the beginning point. Alternate: This route has some steep grades and the pavement in the right lane is bad in some spots near the shoulder. Follow the first route until Reiter Road at the 1.9 mile mark. Turn right onto Reiter. Continue on Reiter to

Route 20A at the 3.1 mile mark. Cross 20A carefully; this is a busy state highway. If you need to return to the village, you would turn right at the intersection. After crossing 20A, continue on Reiter to Lapham Road at the 4.3 mile mark. Turn right, up a steep hill. After you climb the hill, look for Buffalo’s skyline in the distance. Sometimes Lake Erie is visible as well. It’s downhill from there! Continue on Lapham to Olean Road (Rt. 16 - busy) at the 5.8 mile mark. Turn right. Make the first left (South St. at the 6.0 mark) Alternate: continue straight on Olean Road for a shortcut back, but it is a busy street with curbs and is narrow. Turn right off South St. at Sycamore (6.4) and continue north to Oakwood Ave. (7.0). Turn right onto Oakwood, then next left onto Elm St. Cross Main St. (7.3) at light to Riley, take first right at Fillmore, first right at Church, and parking lot entrance is on your left at 7.5 mile mark. An alternate to the alternate would be to reverse the course. There would be the steep approximate mile and a half ride up Lapham Road, but from there it would mainly be a downhill ride, and the shoulder on the east lane of Reiter after Route 20A is better. Those uncertain about their riding ability might want to consider taking the route by car before setting out by bicycle!

Architectural Interests... A Walking Tour Settlement of the area dates to 1804 and provides a continuous chronicle of changing style in architecture. It is also interesting to note “updates” which occurred over the years. Some of those styles are easily seen on a walk down Main Street (about two miles, round trip). The homes listed here are found in the Aurora’s Architectural Heritage book. There are many other interesting homes, as well. For the most part, they are private homes and the grounds are not intended for touring, so please “survey” from the public sidewalk. Starting on East Main Street (north side) and walking west, 892 - Queen Anne, 1892; 866 - High Victorian Brick, 1885; 824 - Early Clapboard, 1830 with c1860 veranda. Entering the “Historic Main Street” business area, the first block features a variety of buildings which date to the turn-of-the-century and earlier. As is typical of many small towns, fire took its toll in the business district so most of the earliest buildings were replaced. Crossing Riley Street, looking to the right, one sees the old Pennsylvania Railroad Depot. This depot replaced a typical smalltown wooden structure because of the well-known people and numbers of visitors who visited the Roycroft Shops after the turn-of-the-century. Continuing west within two blocks you will be in the mid-Main area. There are a number of interesting old frame buildings including some dating to the early 1830’s. After passing Grove Street you will be in front of the East Aurora Main Street School. The building dates to 1916, with additions through 1964, but the location has been the site of education in East Aurora for over 150 years. Note the historic marker explaining the statues on the school campus. Continuing, you will pass more of East Aurora’s many churches. St. Matthias Episcopal Church (1928) has stained glass windows designed by noted local artist Rixford Jennings. A classic New York State Colonial dating to 1828 can be seen at 340 Main Street. Turn right for a few steps at Shearer Avenue to see the National Landmark Millard Fillmore Home and Museum.

Continue west, note the historic marker and then take a brief walk through the Aurora Park Health Care Facility grounds that will lead you on a side trip to the judge’s stand from the Hamlin Farm (see separate information). We suggest you cross Main Street at Willow to begin your second half of the round trip. (There are several shops and restaurants from this point west if you are so inclined, however.) Walking east, 259 Main Street is an 1840 Greek Revival with later modifications. Passing the new townhouses, the next building is a typical “early cottage” at 285. 305 — Vertical Victorian, 1864; 319 - Basic Federal with modifications, 1826. Crossing Center Street, the Baker Memorial Church, 1928, features 17 opalescent glass windows created by the designers and artisans of the famed Tiffany Studios. Four have the signature of Louis Comfort Tiffany. 377 Main Street is an example of an early clapboard modified to Eastlake. 411 Main Street features interesting Italian bracket-work. You are now passing by the National Landmark Roycroft Campus (see separate information). The building on the corner with the tower was built by the Roycrofters in 1899. Continuing east, note the Federal, c1820 which was modified to Italianate (509). You’ll now be continuing through the business area, past the Presbyterian Church, on by our Village Hall and back to the uptown historic business district. One of the interesting structures here will be the Masonic Temple and Rick’s on Main, an 1840's home transformed into a restaurant. The Globe Hotel is one of the earliest surviving business structures, dating to 1824. Originally constructed as two stories, the third floor “dance hall” was added well over 100 years ago. Continuing into the residential area: 793 - Greek Revival with modification, c1855; 853 - Italianate, c1872, m 1925. You will pass a number of additional interesting homes typical of the community and be back at your starting place at 893 Main Street, a Second Georgian Revival.

Knox Farm State Park At village edge is the Knox Farm State Park, for generations the summer home of the Knox family. The 633 acre Ess Kay Farm was a later entry into East Aurora’s noted horse breeding era. Later polo was the equestrian focus, and the polo fields are in use today, along with the new Chur Equestrian Center. Throughout the farm there are trails shared by runners and bicyclists and separate trails shared by horseback riders and hikers. A variety of lands, from woodlands to meadows to grasslands along with wetlands and ponds make a walk through the rolling countryside a pleasant experience as well as supporting many plant and animal species. Knox Farm State Park is a low-impact park, meaning you won’t find swings, picnic shelters and fireplaces. In fact, fires are not permitted and the park is strictly a “carry in, carry out” facility when it comes to food service. There are some

picnic tables near the barns and farm buildings near the entrance. Restrooms are available there. Dogs are permitted if on a six-foot leash. There is a “pooper scooper” law in effect. Horseback riding is by permit only, which can be obtained by calling the park office at 655-7200. Horse owners are required to have a current Coggins certificate. The stable facility is not open to the general public at this time. For use of the stables and riding lessons, contact the stable manager. The Audubon Society has a presence in the park, and equestrian events and polo are held periodically in the summer. The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk. In the winter cross-country skiing is permitted. For information about a park support group go to www. friendsofknoxpark.org.

The National Landmark Roycroft Inn offers tours.

Historic East Aurora - It Really Is! Many places call themselves historic, but few the size of East Aurora offer as many historic attractions. East Aurora village, incorporated in 1874, boasts two National Landmarks: the Roycroft Campus and the President Millard Fillmore Home. There are locallyoperated museums associated with each. The Town of Aurora was settled in 1805, and was formed in 1818. The Roycroft Campus consists of 14 buildings located on South Grove and Main Streets. It is the location of the Roycroft Shops, an important center of the Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1890’s. Founded by writer-philosopher-businessman Elbert Hubbard in 1895, the Roycroft Campus gained National Landmark status in 1986. The Roycroft Inn, which includes the original Roycroft print shop, was completed in 1905. Some writers of the time noted that it was built to “accommodate Hubbard’s admirers.” The Inn is owned by a non-profit organization and underwent a multi-million dollar restoration in 1995. It is an operating Inn and restaurant. The print shop is now home of the Erie County Farm and Home Center. While now housing offices, some of the original Roycroft woodwork is still visible in the halls and stairways. Another original Roycroft building was once the blacksmith shop and later was expanded as the Copper Shop. Purchased by the nonprofit Roycroft Campus Corporation (RCC) and under continuing restoration, the Copper Shop now includes a gallery for contemporary craftsmen, and a gift shop. The re-constructed Roycroft Power House, another project of the RCC, pro-

vides space for educational programs and is available for rental for events. It now includes a Visitor’s Center. The Roycroft book bindery and furniture shop, a large frame structure, now houses a pottery studio, a series of antique shops, art gallery and frame shop. A few blocks from the Roycroft Campus on Oakwood Avenue is the Elbert Hubbard Museum, an extensive collection of Roycroft arts, crafts and books and many one-of-a-kind items from the Roycroft era. President Millard Fillmore’s home is another East Aurora National Landmark. It is one of the few surviving presidential homes actually constructed by the president. Built in 1825 by Fillmore, the “New York State Colonial” cottage has been restored and furnished as it might have appeared in that era. Some of Fillmore’s furnishings are included

in the collection. The Fillmore House is operated as a museum. Flower and herb gardens are featured at the home on Shearer Avenue. In the third quarter of the 19th century East Aurora was known as “the world’s trotting nursery.” Race horses were raised and trained here in large farms 36

operated by Cicero Hamlin, the Jewetts and the Knoxes. The “world’s only one-mile covered race track” was of national interest, and “Mambrino King,” judged the world’s most handsome horse, was shown to thousands of visitors.

Antiques

In a town so involved with history, it’s no surprise that there are many antique shops. Among them are Roycroft Antiques on the Roycroft Campus, Punkin’s Patch on Elm Street, Will Faller Fine Art & Antiques on Main St., and Williston Antiques in nearby Wales Center. These are just some of the local shops. Most antique dealers are happy to tell you where to find others.

Accommodations

East Aurora offers accommodations for overnight visitors in locally-operated hotels and bed and breakfast establishments. A number are advertised in this publication. The Roycroft Inn, a National Historic Landmark, has been renovated and restored to the Arts & Crafts Era and operates as an Inn and restaurant. The Hampton Inn and Suites on Olean Road and Green Glen on E. Main St. are convenient to the Historic Main St. shopping area.

Entertainment

East Aurora’s many summer activities provide a busy schedule of events for residents and visitors. In addition to events and concerts, other entertainment activities include movies and plays. The Aurora Theatre, located on Main Street, operates seven days a week and is one of the few traditional wide-screen movie houses still operating. The Aurora Theatre is an immaculatelymaintained theatre with comfortable seating and modern projection equipment. Consult the East Aurora Advertiser or the “landmark” marquee for the current film. The Aurora Players have provided community theatre here for over a half-century. The locally-produced plays include dramas, comedies and musicals. The Players’ productions are staged in the Roycroft Pavilion in Hamlin Park, a charming setting for community theatre.

Golf, Tennis, Swimming (continued)

Private country clubs here include the East Aurora Country Club and the Cragburn Country Club. Public courses include Elma Meadows (Girdle Road, Elma), Byrncliff (Route 20A, about 15 minutes east) and Holland Hills (Holland). Bob-O-Link on Transit Road in Aurora offers a Par 3 course which is lighted, and a driving range, also there is the Aurora Driving Range just south of the village on Olean Road. Summit Gymnastics on Maple Road in Elma offers a fitness program as well as gymnastic training. An outdoor community swimming pool is located on the corner of South Street and Olean Road and operates all summer, weather permitting. It includes changing rooms and has a kiddie pool. There are more than a dozen tennis courts in various parks in and around the village.

Religious Services

East Aurora was once described as a community of churches. Churches in the area represent most major faiths. Schedules of services vary from season to season, and most are listed weekly in the East Aurora Advertiser, the local newspaper. They are also listed on the eastaurorany.com website.

Farmers’ Market

The East Aurora Farmers’ Market features home-grown and home-produced products from area residents. The outdoor market is held at the Aurora Village Shopping Center on Saturdays and Wednesdays from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Seasonal fruits and vegetables, plants, honey, cider and baked goods are some of the items offered there. The market operates until fall harvest has ended.

Golf, Tennis, Swimming

Outdoor sports are popular around East Aurora, so there are plenty of opportunities for summer sports. Golf is played here at two country clubs, three public courses and a par three course, all within five to 20 minutes of the center of the village.

(or is it 13?) parks and nature sanctuaries by the time you settled in to watch the sunset at the Mill Road Scenic (there’s an understatement) Overlook. Shopping & Dining

Whether “recreational” or necessary, the East Aurora area provides a pleasant atmosphere for shopping. The village shopping areas can be divided into three areas which developed from the time when the community was actually two separate villages. On the east end is the “uptown” or historic Main Street area. One of the best-known shops here is Vidler’s. It’s an old-fashioned five and dime complete with a brass cash register and wooden floors. There are many other interesting shops, services and restaurants in this section. Just a block north of Main Street down Riley Street is the Fisher-Price Toystore at Fisher-Price Headquarters, Girard Avenue. Moving west, there is the mid-town, west end area including the Roycroft Campus shops and stretching to the traffic circle at the end of Main Street. There are gift shops, like The Cottage, restaurants, and services available. The Aurora Village Shopping Center is just moments from the Circle on Grey Street. For more than 50 years local residents have enjoyed the variety of goods and services available at the Center. A Farmers’ Market is located at the recently remodeled Shopping Center every Wednesday and Saturday morning through late fall. There are a number of day spas available in the village. Throughout East Aurora “you can’t pay to park." There are many public parking lots off Main Street, as well as two-hour free parking on Main Street.

Parks and More in Beautiful East Aurora and Beyond Throughout East Aurora and the surrounding towns, outdoor sports and activities rule. All four seasons present opportunities galore to explore, play and exercise. Hit the hills and slopes, cruise the waterways, hike the wooded trails, chase that little white ball around, or just relax in the green open spaces and parks located within town borders.

In winter months, the clubhouse becomes a “ski lodge” and families hit the slopes for sledding, snowboarding, tubing and tobogganing, and cross-country skiers love the groomed trails. (Phone 716-652-5475.) Holland Hills Country Club (10438 Holland Glenwood Road, Colden) is a par 72, regulation 18-hole golf course in the Holland Hills on the highest point in Erie County.
