HELPING PEOPLE FIND & FOLLOW GOD ALONG THE GRACE PATHWAY God is doing amazing things at Neighborhood, and I pray you’ll find your home here. I’m so honored to serve as Senior Pastor to such a great group of people. As you look through the pages, remember that the church is people, not a building. We are imperfect people with a great God and a perfect Savior. I’d like to invite you to come alongside us – we’ll welcome you with open arms. Join this exciting adventure of helping people find and follow God.

In His Grace,

Bill Giovannetti Senior Pastor

OUR VALUES ––

PEOPLE

OUR MISSION ––

HELPING PEOPLE FIND AND FOLLOW GOD ALONG THE GRACE PATHWAY.

Because people matter to God, and everybody needs the gospel. Compassion for people compels us.

ETERNITY

Because people are created to live forever, and eternal destinies are at stake. Heaven and hell are real.

GRACE

Because legalism sucks the joy out of finding and following God.

––

FINDING GOD

happens when a person trusts Jesus as Savior.

TRUTH

Because we are ruined by the lies we believe and set free by the truths we receive.

FOLLOWING GOD

happens as a person increasingly responds to Jesus as Lord as they grow in grace.

CROSS

Because Christ’s sacrifice has blown us away with love and grace, and we want everybody to experience the treasure we found when we found Him.

PHILOSOPHY

Our whole philosophy is the GRACE PATHWAY. Everything we do is designed to move you through its four steps– God saves you, God blesses you, God grows you, God uses you.

The

GRACE PATHWAY GOD SAVES YOU Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12

GOD BLESSES YOU Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. Ephesians 1:3

GOD GROWS YOU So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. Acts 20:32

GOD USES YOU Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

eighborhood is a big church but we don’t want you to get lost in the crowd! If you want to meet people and grow in your relationship with God, being part of a Life Group is a great place for you. Each one is a ‘come as you are’ gathering, where people are far from perfect, there’s no need to dress up, and everyone is welcome (and you won’t be asked who you voted for in the last election!). Many groups meet off campus and in homes. Go to neighborhood.cc/findagroup to see our complete list of groups and classes, or contact groups@neighborhood.cc or 530-2215683 x1719 for more information. Questions? Contact us at groups@neighborhood.cc.

FIVE REASONS YOU NEED A LIFE GROUP Wonder what the big deal is about life groups? Here are five reasons you should consider joining one.

1

JESUS’ WAY OF LIFE CANNOT BE LEARNED ALONE Jesus’ teachings fall into two categories: how to develop yourself spiritually, and how to treat other people. Neither of these can be learned alone. They require practice partners who can provide insight, advice, and encouragement. Life groups are triedand-true places to find such support.

SUPPORT ENCOURAGES CHANGE We each have hurtful, immature, and even dangerous behaviors that we need to change. Change comes as we practice the teachings of Jesus. But it’s hard work, and it is nearly impossible if we’re trying to do it alone. James, one of the first church leaders, addressed this issue by encouraging those who were learning the way of Jesus to “confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” Confession is the act of articulating what is wrong. A life group is a safe place to confess and receive encouragement. We come to know the hopes and dreams and struggles of the other group members. With their support, we can grow into healthier behaviors that are more in line with the teachings of Jesus.

RELATIONSHIPS LEAD TO SHARING One of the biggest barriers to growth is “stuff.” Much of modern-day culture seems obsessed with accumulating new things. For many, there is no greater fear than losing all of their possessions. A tangible sign of growth is when a Jesusfollower learns to trust God more than they trust stuff. When we share, we are trusting that God will continue to provide for us. When we receive what others have shared with us, we recognize that we have been given an unearned gift from God. Slowly but surely, sharing helps us to move beyond our self-focused obsession with stuff. Life groups provide a place to make meaningful relationships where such sharing can take place.

MISSION HAPPENS IN LIFE GROUPS What if Frodo had gone to Mordor without the Fellowship? Or Luke had tried to rescue Leia without Obi-Wan, Han, and Chewbacca? Or Bill had attempted to go on an excellent adventure without Ted? These stories are great because they demonstrate the relationships that develop when groups go on mission together. One powerful way that Christians grow from life groups is by working toward shared goals and common causes. A group might work together to provide housing for a homeless person or meals for a new parent. They might band together to serve a fellow group member with a serious health issue. Or they may bond over pursuing similar goals, like developing a spiritual discipline. When life groups unite to accomplish a meaningful mission, growth is the unavoidable result.

5

4 LIFE GROUPS TAKE CHURCH BEYOND SUNDAY Imagine you went to the gym for one hour a week. While it’s better than nothing, you’d probably just end up sore, tired, and sweaty without enjoying many long-term effects. Losing weight and gaining muscle require a good diet and regular exercise. If a person’s spirituality is limited to one hour a week, it will be difficult for them to grow. A life group leads to growth by creating more opportunities to come to know God, to practice the teachings of Jesus, and to grow spiritually.

CARE MINISTRY PROVIDES

EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL SUPPORT If you asked people about the times they have experienced the most spiritual growth, what do you think they would say? Regardless of their specific situations and struggles, people regularly indicate that difficult life circumstances are what sparked and ignited their faith.

Emotional needs and spiritual needs are considered to be distinct and separate from one another, but research has shown that in many ways they are interrelated. While both encompass a search for meaning and hope, spirituality goes farther to include seeking the peace and presence of God. In fact, when people’s emotional and spiritual needs are not adequately addressed, anger, depression, feelings of hopelessness, negative emotions and stress amplify our feelings of separation from God and our brothers and sisters in Christ. The Word of God frequently takes root in people’s hearts and begins to grow when there is heightened awareness of our need for God. Even though difficult situations and struggles are seldom pleasant, they are often optimal times to disciple people and we see people experiencing spiritual growth. So what are some of the benefits of emotional and spiritual care? • • • •

Deeper relationships and spiritual growth A sense of connectedness Improved quality of life Enhanced emotional coping and psychosocial functioning • Improved emotional and functional adjustment • Decreased anxiety • And more

While the relationship that we have with the Lord is a personal responsibility, our circumstances and challenges are often more than we alone can handle. “Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear.” Philippians 2:12. Without spiritual encouragement and emotional support, many lack the response-ability to quiet their minds, pray earnestly, discern the voice of God, and experience the love and power of Jesus. When coming along side people who are encountering difficult life situations and struggles, people want to feel that there is an awareness of and appreciation for their feelings and circumstances. Additionally, people do not want to be criticized, fixed, or feel as though they are being judged. It is when there is a genuine sense of caring that people become increasingly willing to open up and discover their need for God. The Care Ministry teams advocate a biblicallybased model of care that is grounded in Scripture and advances core biblical principles.
