Sprucing Up Your Home - It’s A Journey, Not An Afternoon

Spring is upon us and for our local community that means that many will be searching for a new home or “sprucing up” your home.

Springtime brings so much from “spring cleaning” to getting back outside doing yard work and planting those lovely spring fowers and plants. Of course, being back outside enjoying family barbecues, watching March Madness on the patio (just exciting because our sweet university “may” just be in the lead) and of course watching our kids play all the sports outdoors! After being cooped up in our homes during the winter we start trepidatiously doing all those springtime chores and, for Alabama and our wacko weather, we wait for that last burst of winter or maybe even a little snow. For some reason many of us believe spring and summer time lead us to “get all things together and decorated” for our home. Beware: this age old myth is not true. I believe that decorating your home and keeping it organized is a journey - not an afternoon of running around placing pics on the walls and throwing new pillows on the couch. With that being said, if you are wanting to “spruce up your home”, where do you start? Here are 5 surefre ways to begin your home redo journey:

1) Prioritize, Evaluate & Organize - Nowadays decorating a home is about “less is more”. It is okay to throw away what you don’t need or no longer want. Prioritize a few treasures that you love and would be lost without them. Say goodbye to the unnecessary junk - even if it was your grandmother’s lamp that no longer works! Now is the time to evaluate everything and make sure the things you are keeping will have a purpose in your space and life - this will help you avoid a house full of clutter. My general rule of thumb - each item I have in my home has to have two purposes: 1) the item needs to be aesthetically pleasing to me or someone in my family 2) the item must hold a memory or have a function of some sort. Example: I have a tiered tray that is black and gold on my dining room table. I love the way it looks with elegance and class and it also brings together the chandelier right above it and the china cabinet behind that table.

Helpful Hint: if you can’t fnd a space for it, you probably don’t need the item.

2) Out with the Old, In with the New - As you grow with your home, your home decor should mature with you. This is an opportunity to discard mismatched kitchenware, plates and utensils. Also, take this time to get rid of items that have been with you since college. No more posters on the wall anymore! It is so easy these days to fnd fabulous artwork that coordinates your colors and brings maturity to your space. If you are unable to fnd that “perfect piece” for your space - check out The Crazy Craft Chick on Facebook and see all the options you have for DIY (doing it yourself). You choose the design, colors and surface to get that “perfect piece” for that part of your home.

3) Fight the Urge to Splurge - Many times as we redo our homes or move into a new space we want “all the things” that are in style at that moment - Stop, Breathe & Wait a Moment! You may feel confdent about purchasing a large piece of new furniture and the fact is that you may not love it in years to come. So take your time and fnd the big pieces that you absolutely love and cannot imagine life without. If you are unable to fnd exactly what you are looking for; use cheaper furniture with some Fusion or Blackberry Furniture Paint to get the color you want. Within time you will fnd that piece and will not have that awful gut feeling of “wish I waited”. If you are wanting to upgrade the color to some furniture - check out Angel’s Antiques and the brand names I mentioned above. I have loved working with both paints as they do not require sanding and prep work and can even be painted inside because there is no chemical smell.

4) DIY Upgrades - We have touched on this a bit. Decorating a home doesn’t require buying all new things. Rather than purchasing new furniture or decor pieces, upgrade the items you already own with stylish new hardware or new pops of paint. Drab kitchen cabinets can be transformed with decorative knobs, and grungy walls always love a new coat of paint. Even replacing simple pieces like outlet and light switch cover can make your home feel fresh and new. Helpful Tip: While you are changing out some of those light switch covers consider putting a dimmer in for that chandelier. Nothing says new like various light settings for a room, especially that dining room and family room! 5) Accents Make the Space - Small accent elements will go along way in personalizing your home’s decor. Throw pillows, foor pillows and blanket throws make for a true cozy space and can easily be switched out whenever you feel like it. Draw attention to your foors by vibrant rugs or a light rug if your space is dark. And, last but not least, and my personal favorite. Make your windows look less bare with a set of fowing, noise reduction and black out curtains. Need I say more about curtains and all they can do for you - keep your home cool and warm, less noise from the outside and fowy curtains bring a certain class and appeal to your home.

Helpful Tip: The majority of people put curtains right above the window. To draw attention to the height of your home, take the curtains to the top to the ceiling or if you have the 2 story open family room, hang the curtains about 2 feet above the top of the window. This brings eye appeal to the top of your room and also makes your room and home look larger.

Tip of the Month: Choosing paint for your halls and walls can be the easiest and cheapest way to give your home a fresh and new look. Choosing the wrong color for your home can be the greatest and most expensive mistake you can make. So take your time and choose wisely. I love Sherwin Williams - I pop by the various locations in town and love to look at the examples and color palettes that have been professionally put together by their team of experts. Even online you can choose a color and the Sherwin Williams website will pull other colors to coordinate with your main decor theme color. Here is the thing: choose your color palette frst! I tell my clients to look at their closet and bring out their favorite tops, bottoms and dresses. The clothes they feel fabulous wearing. Lay those clothes around the couch and just live and look at those colors for a few days.

If you are still stuck after this little trick - I am here to help. The Crazy Crafty Chick can help you choose your color palette, fooring and flling up your home with accent pieces that make you smile and bring out your personality.
