Creative writing students, for example, work with musical theater students to develop original productions, giving writers time in the spotlight and performers a

Education Partner Honored
For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com
John Theissen, founder and executive director of the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, was honored as one of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 11 honorees to receive the Nassau BOCES Education Partner award. The distinction is bestowed annually on those whose impact on public education in Nassau County can be measured in tangible ways. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to honor those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. Theissen couldn’t make it to the awards gala held by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation, an independent non-profit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget, so he received his award from the Nassau BOCES Board President Stephen Witt prior to a recent board meeting. “At age 17, John Theissen was a high school senior and
promising athlete when he received devastating news — he was diagnosed with a brain tumor,” Stephen Witt, president of the Nassau BOCES Board. “During his hospital stay, one little girl made such an impact on John that it shaped his lifelong goals.” “I met a seven-year-old girl named Tasha,” Theissen recalled. “When none of her family showed up for the hospital’s holiday party, my mother accompanied her. Tasha told Santa she didn’t want anything for herself, just a teddy bear for her friend upstairs who was too sick to attend. I felt fortunate to be that friend.” In 1992, inspired in part by Tasha’s kindness, Theissen created the John Theissen Children’s Foundation (JTCF). His first toy drive that year netted more than 800 new toys for children in hospitals. To date, more than 750,000 toys have been donated to hospitals, child-care facilities, shelters, rehabilitation centers, individual families and anywhere there are sick children. Beyond its toy drive, JTCF has helped to equip a number of hospitals with video game systems, playrooms, fun furnishings and other supplies. The foundation has expanded to grant wishes to sick children, provide underprivileged children with gifts during the holidays, and to donate clothing and school supplies each September. In 2008, JTCF opened
its Fun Center for children who, due to illness, cannot be in the general public. The center provides a no-cost option to celebrate birthdays and other special events, allowing these children a place where they can feel like regular kids. Although managing his medical condition is frequently challenging, Thiessen says, “I feel that if given the opportunity, and considering all of my blessings, I wouldn’t change a thing.” He lives in Wantagh with his wife and two children. “We are honoring 11 people who have proven that they are innovators,” said Dr. Robert Hanna, deputy superintendent for Nassau BOCES at the gala. “Individually and collectively, they have had a powerful impact on public education in this county, and we have all benefited from their efforts.”

Officer In Charge
Nassau Community College announced that Dr. Kenneth K. Saunders has been named Officer in Charge effective July 31st. Dr. Saunders stated, “I am honored by the confidence that the NCC Board of Trustees has placed in me, and I look forward to working with all segments of the campus and the Long Island community in advancing the mission of Nassau Community College of providing an
affordable and accessible higher education to our students and serving the region’s needs in a multiplicity of ways.” Geoffrey Prime, Chair of the NCC Board of Trustees, is enthusiastic about Dr. Saunders’ appointment. Said Chairman Prime, “The Board of Trustees looks forward to working with Dr. Saunders and all members of the College community in meeting our mutual goals on behalf of our students. Dr. Saunders’ background at NCC well positions him to take a leadership role in this extraordinarily important effort.” Dr. Saunders earned a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Management and Leadership from the
University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling from Howard University. In addition, he attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University. Dr. Saunders brings over 28 years of experience as a senior higher education administrator (fifteen in the SUNY system) at several highly regarded educational institutions, including the State University of New York at Old Westbury, the University of MichiganFlint, Howard University and Illinois State University. Most recently, he served as Executive Vice President of Nassau. Prior to that, he was for twelve years the College’s Vice President for Academic Student Services.
Successful Outing
Skies were threatening early on, but the weather cooperated and the spirit of generosity of sponsors and players enabled The Friends of Mercy Medical Center to raise some $30,000 at their 31st Annual Golf Classic. A field of nearly 90 golfers enjoyed play on July 23rd at the Hempstead Golf & Country Club, followed by a post-outing dinner honoring Dr. Michael H. Brisman of Neurological Surgery, P.C., the largest private neurosurgery practice on Long Island and in the New York
Tristate area, which has been a sustaining sponsor of the Golf Classic, and has provided generous ongoing support for all of The Friends major fundraising events for many years. The Golf Classic was cochaired for a third consecutive year by Joseph and Thomas Graham of Rockville Centre, co-founders of JJT Energy, a firm supplying natural gas to the commercial and residential market. Proceeds from this event will support Mercy's Level III Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the only such facility on the south shore of Nassau County. Mother/Baby services are at the core of Mercy’s mission and the funds raised at the Golf Classic help to make it possible for the hospital to assist mothers and babies throughout the community, including the less fortunate and the uninsured. Over the past five years, the Friends have raised some $1.5 million to support hospital facilities.
School of Cooking and the School of Baking and Pastry Arts — each offering professional-level job-readiness courses. A student completing either program will be fully prepared to work in a commercial kitchen as an entry-level chef. “This is the perfect opportunity talk with our experienced instructional staff, all of whom are professionals in their given fields,” says Rick Polansky, Adult Evening Program supervisor. “Instructors will tell you about what you can expect to learn and what career opportunities are available. You can get the inside point of view.” Visitors can also speak to career counselors in the Barry Tech Career Assessment and Coaching Center, and make an appointment to determine the best possible career path, based on individual strengths and skill sets. Courses are available in
more than 40 fields, including those showing marked industry growth, such as health professions and the trades. The AEP’s Health Occupations program features training for in-demand careers, from medical and dental assisting, to medical billing an coding. Highgrowth trade courses include: heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air conditioning (HVRAC); welding; plumbing; electrical; and automotive. Many other popular career courses are available including cosmetology, veterinary sciences and personal training. Upon successful completion of required program sequences, participants receive certificates for their achievements. For more information and a complete list of courses, visit the AEP website at www.adultednassau.org, or call 516.622.6950.
Night At The Movies By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I don’t get it. Why is it that, more and more, parents insist on taking their young children to movies that they have no business seeing at hours of the night when they would be better served settling in for a bedtime story? Nearly every movie that I’ve seen in the last few months has featured the background noise of a screaming, crying young child, pretty much from the opening credits onward. Seriously folks? My last movie outing had to be the best (or worst, if we’re being literal) by far. No sooner had we settled in to watch the previews when a little girl – who couldn’t have been more than three or four years old mind you – began rocking back and forth in her chair, kicking the seat in front of her (you guessed it… mine) and whining about how she wanted to get ice cream, RIGHT NOW. This little performance continued for the next three hours. Seriously. At one point, I was startled by what I thought was something crawling on me. But no, it was the tiny hand of the child, attempting

to catapult herself over the seat next to me into my row. This was shortly followed by the pitter-patter of little feet running back and forth down the aisles, all the while singing at the top of her lungs. Now, don’t get me wrong. Children are adorable and cute and all that – just not at a 10:30 movie screening of a film that clearly only the parental units were interested in seeing. And the “adults” who I assume were with her for supervision seemed unfazed by it all, simply staring straight ahead at the screen, paying no mind to the dozens of dirty looks from those in the surrounding seats. The only admonishment was the occasional, “Now if you want ice cream, you better be good honey!” Good? Honey?! It was at this point that I looked around for a hidden camera, convinced I must have been a part of the latest episode of “What Would You Do?” or some other prank show. Because, truly, there was no way that two people could be that inconsiderate of an entire movie theater full of people, right? Apparently wrong. At a certain point, my exasper-

ation turned to anger, enough so that I turned around and snapped, “Are you kidding me right now? Ever heard of a babysitter?” That seemed to quiet things down momentarily, as the two women just stared blankly back and halfheartedly told the child to sit down and behave. That lasted for all of about 10 minutes. By the end of the three hours, in between straining to hear the dialogue and being jostled in my seat by the incessant kicking, the whole situation was so absurd that it had somehow become hysterically funny. After all, this had to be a joke. On the way to our cars, we had the good fortune to run into this same trio, this time with the child galloping through the parking lot whining about – you guessed it, ice cream. As I walked by them, I just couldn’t resist. “Wow, if this is her being good, I wouldn’t want to see it when she doesn’t behave! Glad she’s getting that ice cream – sugar should make the situation much better!” Once again, I was met with a pair of blank stares. Next time, get a babysitter. Seriously.

Sparkles was all awiggle with anticipation. Her toys were packed and she was freshly groomed, her little heart pounded with love and joy...she was going home. The wonderful people at Massapequa Pet’s Vet who saved her life when her owner decided he’d rather go on vacation than pay for Sparkle’s surgery had told her about the wonderful loving couple who would come for her. The pain from her injuries and the heartbreak of being abandoned by the person 2. she loved was behind her now. Sparkles was more than willing to devote her whole being to her new owners and to allow her broken heart to heal. Little Shelter: As the hours went by, Sparkles would 631.368.8770 blink and snuff the air every time she heard DEMI footsteps. “Was it them? Would she be going young female Calico, home now?” Sparkles found it hard to wait. Domestic Short Hair At the end of the day, Sparkles finally heard FLO the footsteps coming to her cage - this was female Maltese it, her new people had arrived to take her home. But instead it was her old Massapequa Pet’s Vet friends. “We’re sorry, Sparkles girl, they’re not coming... They changed their minds.” They carefully unpacked her toys and gave her a hug; then they shut the lights and Sparkles was alone in the dark. She sighed as she circled her cage, and then she lay down on her bed with her head on her paws...waiting. Readers, I was told that the reason the wonderful couple did not come for Sparkles was because they were heartbroken. Their beloved Rottweiller had died, and the gentleman could not bring himself to open his heart to another dog. Everyone deals with loss differently. My poor heart has been broken so many times with the loss of a beloved pet. I understand the pain. For me, the only way I can cope is to open my heart and welcome another pet to help me heal. Without that special healing love, I would find the pain of loss very difficult to deal with. I would like to ask that couple to reconsider, to honor the memory of their dearly loved dog by allowing Sparkles to love them and help them heal. But meanwhile, Sparkles is still waiting. Please consider calling Massapequa Pet’s Vet at 516.797.8387 so you can meet Sparkles. Perhaps you’re the special loving person she’s been waiting for. I’m aching to write a happy ending to this story. Every living creature deserves to give love and be loved in return, don’t you agree?
