Honoring A Gift Charles H. Stoll (18871988), a trustee and benefactor of the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, was a noted explorer, naturalist and big-game hunter who created and financed the museum's strikingly detailed Stoll Wing animal-habitat dioramas featuring wild game he had brought back from around the world - which the museum opened to the public in 1970. In Stoll’s memory, his granddaughter, Lynnda Speer, and her husband, Roy, through the Roy M. Speer Foundation, have

given a gift of $100,000 to the Vanderbilt to endow the restoration and modernization of the Stoll Wing dioramas. The wing was built to complement the naturalhistory galleries and the Habitat Room built by William K. Vanderbilt II. Stephanie Gress, the museum’s director of curatorial services, said “It’s wonderful that Mrs. Speer and her family have reconnected with the Vanderbilt Museum and their grandfather’s legacy. The Stoll Wing and the Vanderbilt Planetarium opened within months of

each other. The renovated Planetarium will reopen this fall. So it seems like fate that their generous gift, geared toward the future of Mr. Stoll’s animal dioramas, would arrive now.” Lance Reinheimer, interim executive director, said, “The Speer family's spectacular gift will enable us to restore the Stoll Wing and its amazing specimens, key elements of our education programs. Although it is unclear whether Stoll and Vanderbilt ever met, their interests and expeditions had remarkable parallels.

They also shared a love of the natural world and a deep commitment to public education.” The eight Stoll Wing dioramas display 15 animals - brought home by Stoll and his wife, Merle, between 1922 and 1969 - plus 30 mounted heads. The animals are from Africa, Alaska, the American West, the Arctic, British Honduras (now Belize), Canada, India and Nova Scotia. Specimens range from a blue wildebeeste, polar bear, walrus and Cape buffalo, to a kudu, ostrich, jaguar, Bengal

tiger and leopard. Stoll hired Dr. James L. Clark, a renowned taxidermist for the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), to supervise the creation of the Stoll Wing dioramas. Clark chose taxidermists and background artists from among the finest of his colleagues at AMNH. Stoll was also a lawyer and Nassau County judge whose boyhood dream, his granddaughter said, was to become an explorer. He realized that dream when he financed and led the famous 1928

Stoll-McCracken Siberian Arctic Expedition, undertaken under the auspices of the American Museum of Natural History. Interestingly, in 1928, when Stoll and McCracken went northward, Vanderbilt, aboard his yacht Ara, headed southward to explore South America and the Galapagos Islands. Stoll joined the Vanderbilt Museum Board of Trustees in 1967, was elected chairman in 1971, and served until 1975.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I don’t get it. Why is it that, more and more, parents insist on taking their young children to movies that they have no business seeing at hours of the night when they would be better served settling in for a bedtime story? Nearly every movie that I’ve seen in the last few months has featured the background noise of a screaming, crying young child, pretty much from the opening credits onward. Seriously folks? My last movie outing had to be the best (or worst, if we’re being literal) by far. No sooner had we settled in to watch the previews when a little girl – who couldn’t have been more than three or four years old mind you – began rocking back and forth in her chair, kicking the seat in front of her (you guessed it… mine) and whining about how she wanted to get ice cream, RIGHT NOW. This little performance continued for the next three hours. Seriously. At one point, I was startled by what I thought was something crawling on me. But no, it was the tiny hand of the child, attempting

jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie

to catapult herself over the seat next to me into my row. This was shortly followed by the pitter-patter of little feet running back and forth down the aisles, all the while singing at the top of her lungs. Now, don’t get me wrong. Children are adorable and cute and all that – just not at a 10:30 movie screening of a film that clearly only the parental units were interested in seeing. And the “adults” who I assume were with her for supervision seemed unfazed by it all, simply staring straight ahead at the screen, paying no mind to the dozens of dirty looks from those in the surrounding seats. The only admonishment was the occasional, “Now if you want ice cream, you better be good honey!” Good? Honey?! It was at this point that I looked around for a hidden camera, convinced I must have been a part of the latest episode of “What Would You Do?” or some other prank show. Because, truly, there was no way that two people could be that inconsiderate of an entire movie theater full of people, right? Apparently wrong. At a certain point, my exasper-

ation turned to anger, enough so that I turned around and snapped, “Are you kidding me right now? Ever heard of a babysitter?” That seemed to quiet things down momentarily, as the two women just stared blankly back and halfheartedly told the child to sit down and behave. That lasted for all of about 10 minutes. By the end of the three hours, in between straining to hear the dialogue and being jostled in my seat by the incessant kicking, the whole situation was so absurd that it had somehow become hysterically funny. After all, this had to be a joke. On the way to our cars, we had the good fortune to run into this same trio, this time with the child galloping through the parking lot whining about – you guessed it, ice cream. As I walked by them, I just couldn’t resist. “Wow, if this is her being good, I wouldn’t want to see it when she doesn’t behave! Glad she’s getting that ice cream – sugar should make the situation much better!” Once again, I was met with a pair of blank stares. Next time, get a babysitter. Seriously.

Setting The Stage (NAPSI)—With a flood of real estate listings on the market, sellers continuously search for ways to stand out. The process is called staging. Done correctly, it can make a house look bigger, brighter, cleaner, SENIOR CITIZEN INSTALLATION - Pictured: Joan La Rocco, standing in for Rita warmer and make Franzese, 1st Vice President; Josephine DiLauro, 2nd Vice President; Mary Magnani, homebuyers want to buy Recording Secretary; Betty Cardo, President; and Fran Zambrotta, Treasurer. it. To help, here are some tips: • Curb Appeal: The exterior of the house is the first thing potential buyers see; make sure it’s bright, clean and inviting.

Honored For Service

• Clean: Clean from top to bottom, getting rid of clutter and organizing the space. Don’t forget the ceilings and fans. • Brighten Up: Do what you can to help buyers envision living in the space. Make sure windows are streak free. Hide personal pictures. Instead, decorate with fresh flowers. • Living Space: Choose neutral tones for the walls and furniture. Slipcovers are an inexpensive way to spruce up old furniture. Add pillows for pops of

color. • Dining Area: Set your dining room or kitchen table. Use brightly colored plates and napkins. • Master Bedroom: You can make the space appear larger by limiting furniture to essentials; a bed and dresser will do. Working closely with a licensed real estate agent can often help sellers achieve the best results. For more staging and DIY tips, visit www.Homes.com's Idea Gallery.

The Huntington Historical Society is pleased to offer tours of the Van Wyck-Lefferts Tide Mill. The mill, which was built in 1795, is owned by the Nature Conservancy and is the only surviving mill in Huntington. This historic site provided a way for farmers to transform their oats, wheat and corn into flour, which made the mill an extremely important part of the local agricultural past. In addition, it is one of the best preserved 18th century tide mills in the country. This is an unusual and terrific way to enjoy Huntington’s rich heritage. These private tours are accessible by a short boat ride only. Please not that

neither the boat nor the mill is handicapped accessible. This trip is not available to children under age twelve. Advanced registration is required. Contact 631.427.7045, extension 403 in order to register, and for further information. The dates and times are as follows: August 15th, at 9:30 a.m. September 14th, at 9:30 a.m. September 28th, at 9:30 a.m. October 5th, at 2:15 p.m. October 19th, at 1:45 p.m. October 30th, at 10:30 a.m. November 5th, at 2:15 p.m.

Astoria Federal Savings’ 13th Annual Kids Tools for School collection drive will take place throughout August to help prepare children for the start of the new school year. The program provides local students whose families struggle to afford school supplies with the muchneeded educational tools to excel and perform well in the classroom. Starting August 1st, the community is invited to participate by bringing their donations of new school supplies or cash to purchase supplies to any one of Astoria Federal Savings’ 85 branches in Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens and Westchester. Astoria Federal is committed to its philosophy of “Putting people first” in the neighborhoods it serves, and will match up to $10,000 in cash donations to purchase additional supplies to be distributed to local children without school supplies for this upcoming school year. Astoria Federal Savings You Asked We Listened We’re Extending This Program Thru 8/31/12

will once again team up with local schools, shelters and human service organizations to distribute supplies to children in need. More families than ever are likely to find themselves in difficult financial situations this year — many for the first time — and may be unable to provide their children with school supplies, which typically cost as much as $100 per child. As a result, some children may arrive atschool this September without supplies or are forced to recycle last year’s. “Each year we are impressed by the overwhelming community support for our annual Tools for School program,” said Astoria Federal Savings Executive Vice President Brian Edwards. “Children who go to school without school supplies are at a tremendous social and academic disadvantage, and it is important to make sure some of the less fortunate students in our

communities are able to start the year off on the right foot. We at Astoria Federal Savings are extremely proud to be a part of this community effort to level the playing field and help kids have a better experience in school this year.” The Kids Tools for School collection drive is part of Astoria Federal’s Education First initiative, which includes special savings accounts for students, an annual Teach Children to Save Essay Contest and school outreach programs to promote financial literacy, as well as The First Home ClubTM to promote homeownership. These programs and others were all designed to encourage lifelong learning in the communities Astoria Federal serves. More than 160 middle school students (grades 612) from 24 school districts across Nassau and Suffolk counties enjoyed an exceptional experience in the arts this July. The annual Summer Arts Academy at Nassau BOCES’ Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) pairs aspiring artists with distinguished professionals for a rare educational opportunity. LIHSA’s accomplished faculty is home to Emmywinners, film and televisions actors, published poets and playwrights, Broadway performers, master musicians and dozens of other successful artists. Choosing from coursework in the visual arts, dance, drama, musical theater, creative writing, instrumental music, vocals and digital media, students work with these professionals in their chosen interests for

the entire four-week program. “The program opens up all sorts of educational opportunities that many of these students may not have experienced,” says Andrea Schubach, principal of the Summer Arts Academy. “It helps young artists to gain confidence in what they are doing and to try things they never have before, all while immersed in an environment that is supportive of their talents.” The one thing summer academy students do not experience is ennui. The burgeoning artists work collaboratively, crossing over from program to program and applying their interests in new and innovative ways. Creative writing students, for example, work with musical theater students to develop original productions, giving writers time in the spotlight and performers a

stint in the director’s chair. Musicians create original compositions for dance productions, to which dancers eventually perform. Young artists also have the opportunity to hone their craft on state-of-theart equipment, such as the audio lab where musicians can arrange their own cinematic scores to actual movie scenes, or the digital lab that allows young composers to create using leading-edge software. Students also get a taste of what professionals are currently doing, with trips to shows, museums and the like. The final week of the academy is a showcase of what the students have learned. The big finale includes a major art exhibit, the publication of a journal and an extravaganza of performances, from plays to cabarets.

of Long Island’s premier courses, but it has also become so much more. Event Co-Chair, Jeffery Capazzi explained the appeal of R. Brinkley Smithers, “It is wonderful to be involved in organizing this event, especially when the need for proven drug and alcohol support is so evident and continues to escalate each year.” Prizes will be awarded in team and individual categories, and participants will have their chance to “Beat the Pro.” With a silent auction, live auction, and dozens of raffle prizes, everyone will feel like a winner, even if their scores are well over par. The live auction boasts playing opportunities at some of the country’s top courses, while the raffle features golf and vacation packages to the far-away destinations of Scotland and Southern California. “Rest assured this is not your run-of-the-mill golf tournament,” explained Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds. “It is an opportunity to provide hope and healing to atrisk individuals and the families who support them.” The annual fundraiser offers several participation

and sponsorship opportunities. Tournament Sponsors will be featured in multimedia presentations at the tournament, receive sponsor level signage on the course, a pin flag/tee sign package and great exposure on our high traffic website. Each sponsorship package comes with playing opportunities at one of Long Island’s most popular charity golf tournaments. Not a golfer? Not to worry, tickets are available for the Diamonds in the Rough Dinner, to be held at 5:30 p.m. at The Creek. “R. Brinkley Smithers has earned a reputation as one of Long Island’s most popular charity golf tournaments- how fitting that it is dedicated to raising critical funds to address the area’s most prevalent problems,” remarked Event Co-Chair Michael Brennan. Foursomes and individual tickets are already on sale and expected to sell out before the event. For more information, or to reserve your spot today, please contact Mary Alice O’Connor at 516.747.2606 extension 105, or visit LICADD.ORG.

The Lupus Alliance of America, Inc. Long Island/Queens Affiliate is selling Section 113 tickets to the Long Island Ducks vs. Lancaster baseball game to be held on Saturday, August 18th, at 7 p.m. Tickets for this game are $15 each plus a 50¢ service charge per order for tickets mailed to you. Limited number of tickets available. First come, first served. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to continue to help fund the Let Kids Be Kids Program, as well as the Quality of

Life Program, both of which give financial assistance to those who have lupus and are unable to cope with day-to-day problems that having a chronic illness can inflict. Our goals are to bring awareness and educate the community. Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that affects 2.0 million Americans, mostly women. Lupus is a disease in which the body’s immune system forms antibodies that attack healthy tissues and organs. For more information

July 27th. “If we can ease the pain and worry in some small way, we are honored to do so - it is our privilege to help in any way we can,” stated Healthy Sundays Volunteer and St. Catherine’s Nurse Recruiter Sharon Cash. Healthy Sundays exemplifies the mission of Catholic Health Services (CHS) to care for those in need and is one of the system’s most prolific outreach efforts. Started in 2005, the Healthy Sundays program provides preventive health screenings and education to members of underserved communities

on Long Island. The Healthy Sundays program is designed to identify, control, treat and prevent medical conditions that are most prevalent in these communities, such as tuberculosis, obesity, diabetes, cholesterol and hypertension. The program aims to improve the underserved population’s quality of life, by decreasing morbidity and mortality. Ducks Game To Fundraise

Two weeks ago, the volunteers of St. Catherine’s Healthy Sundays Program were contacted to help a local family in need. After reading through a letter about a young man in his last days, suffering with ALS and unable to provide for his family, including four children, the volunteers initiated their mission to help in anyway they could. They started by running a week-long clothing and food drive throughout the medical center. The staff was eager to answer the call to help and a car full of donations were delivered to the family’s home on Friday,

Golf Classic The Suffolk Community College Foundation will hold its 29th Annual Charles F. Kelly, Jr. Memorial Golf Classic on Monday, August 13th, at St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Stony Brook. The proceeds from the outing will support student scholarships, emergency student loans and other programs for the students of Suffolk

Skies were threatening early on, but the weather cooperated and the spirit of generosity of sponsors and players enabled The Friends of Mercy Medical Center to raise some $30,000 at their 31st Annual Golf Classic. A field of nearly 90 golfers enjoyed play on July 23rd at the Hempstead Golf & Country Club, followed by a post-outing dinner honoring Dr. Michael H. Brisman of Neurological Surgery, P.C., the largest private neurosurgery practice on Long Island and in the New York Tristate area, which has been a sustaining sponsor of the Golf Classic, and has provided generous ongoing support for all of The Friends major fund-

raising events for many years. The Golf Classic was cochaired for a third consecutive year by Joseph and Thomas Graham of Rockville Centre, co-founders of JJT Energy, a firm supplying natural gas to the commercial and residential market. Proceeds from this event will support Mercy's Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the only such facility on the south shore of Nassau County. Mother/Baby services are at the core of Mercy’s mission and the funds raised at the Golf Classic help to make it possible for the hospital to assist mothers and babies throughout the

community, including the less fortunate and the uninsured. Over the past five years, the Friends have raised some $1.5 million to support hospital facilities.

Sparkles was all awiggle with anticipation. Her toys were packed and she was freshly groomed, her little heart pounded with love and joy...she was going home. The wonderful people at Massapequa Pet’s Vet who saved her life when her owner decided he’d rather go on vacation than pay for Sparkle’s surgery had told her about the wonderful loving couple who would come for her. The pain from her injuries and the heartbreak of being abandoned by the person 2. she loved was behind her now. Sparkles was more than willing to devote her whole being to her new owners and to allow her broken heart to heal. Little Shelter: As the hours went by, Sparkles would 631.368.8770 blink and snuff the air every time she heard DEMI footsteps. “Was it them? Would she be going young female Calico, home now?” Sparkles found it hard to wait. Domestic Short Hair At the end of the day, Sparkles finally heard FLO the footsteps coming to her cage - this was female Maltese it, her new people had arrived to take her home. But instead it was her old Massapequa Pet’s Vet friends. “We’re sorry, Sparkles girl, they’re not coming... They changed their minds.” They carefully unpacked her toys and gave her a hug; then they shut the lights and Sparkles was alone in the dark. She sighed as she circled her cage, and then she lay down on her bed with her head on her paws...waiting. Readers, I was told that the reason the wonderful couple did not come for Sparkles was because they were heartbroken. Their beloved Rottweiller had died, and the gentleman could not bring himself to open his heart to another dog. Everyone deals with loss differently. My poor heart has been broken so many times with the loss of a beloved pet. I understand the pain. For me, the only way I can cope is to open my heart and welcome another pet to help me heal. Without that special healing love, I would find the pain of loss very difficult to deal with. I would like to ask that couple to reconsider, to honor the memory of their dearly loved dog by allowing Sparkles to love them and help them heal. But meanwhile, Sparkles is still waiting. Please consider calling Massapequa Pet’s Vet at 516.797.8387 so you can meet Sparkles. Perhaps you’re the special loving person she’s been waiting for. I’m aching to write a happy ending to this story. Every living creature deserves to give love and be loved in return, don’t you agree?
